We return this Saturday to Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master from 2012, with cinematography by Mihai Mălaimare Jr. and, in particular, the use of 65mm film. Today we’re looking at the lighting in the jail scene. Dodd and Freddy have just been arrested and brought to the jail cells to await arraignment, and Freddy is having a difficult time coping with unfolding events. From being arrested, to his anger at the police for arresting Dodd, and his anger at Dodd for being arrested, the scene centers around anger and the absence of control. The cells were in the San Pedro courthouse. The space was small – a hallway, some cells, and all lighting needed to be installed. In the hallway were Par 64 Parcans, fitted with 1000W bulbs. Check out the hallway scene above for how this light translated to 65mm film vs the raw images closer to what the eye might see when looking at the lighting set up. Anderson chose to shoot The Master on 65mm film, with lenses needing T-stops of 4 and 5.6, so huge amounts of light were needed for every shot. The averaged footcandles as a base for this lighting set up is about 100fc. Inside the cells, Chimera Pancakes were used overhead, also with 1000W bulbs, while some Arri 750 open faces with chimeras were used as backlights. The Chimera Pancake is generally a great light, but in tight spaces with close-up faces it works particularly well because of the billowing diffusion, and the resulting even spread of light over the faces of the actors. In the above scenes, the Chimera diffuses the light evenly onto both Freddy and Lancaster, re-creating the illusion of poor ambient lighting, but still allowing the audience to see the faces in a softer, more pleasing light. On film, the light is clean and soft, leaving room for the full expression of both Freddy’s and Dodd’s rage. I would credit the work of Latifa for creating a crossroad between the Bauhaus in dismantling the divisions between craftsperson and artist, the influence on the textile legacy of Eastern Europe and Switzerland before the New Bauhaus set up shop in Chicago in 1937 and the greatest textile and image making traditions of North Africa. Maxillofavial Trauma Management - Airway ———————————————————————— After we handle the immediate life threats (massive hemorrhage), we have to consider the airway. Look, listen, and feel: take a look at the injuries and look inside the mouth for blood, vomit, broken teeth, dentures, chewing tobacco, etc. If any of these are present, grab your suction and clear it out. If dismounted or without mechanical suction, grab a 60cc syringe with a cathedral tip and a put an NPA on it to create a field expedient manual suction device. Give the lungs a listen and see if you’re getting adequate air movement. If the environment is keeping you from listening, place you’re hands on the chest and feel for bilaterally equal rise and fall of the chest. ———————————————————————— I would personally prefer to skip the intubation attempt and go for a surgical cricothyroidotomy. Orotracheal and nasotracheal intubation may be attempted but be aware that musculoskeletal tissue disruption will likely increase the difficulty of intubation. LMAs and I-Gels can be used to buy you some time to prep for a cric, but they don’t prevent regurgitation and aspiration of vomitus and may increase vomiting unless a paralytic has been administered (which is unlikely due to the fact that we likely haven’t gained vascular access at this point in our assessment).
