Many have asked how Bridger is doing with his healing. We are so grateful for the concerns, thoughts, and prayers. We have, in a very real and tangible way, been blessed by your positivity. The bottom right was the night of his injury. The bottom middle was after half the stitches came out the following week. The bottom left was after all the stitches were removed. The top two photos are before (right) and after (left) his first laser treatment. The laser treatment was amazing at resurfacing the raised areas and helping with the general coloring. However, it does take some time for all the redness caused by the laser to dissipate. I had a brush with potential serious injury yesterday and fortunately came out with minimal damage. A fairly routine slide out on my bike turned bad when I slammed into a dirt bank, hitting my head, right side and winding myself. After regaining my breath and quickly determining no bones were broken, the pain in my shoulder and lower back became unbearable to the point that I passed out. Propped up, mostly unconscious, by my friends on the side of the trail, we waited for bike patrol. Once they arrived I became lucid fairly quickly and managed to recall and answer questions without issue. Tentatively we walked to the nearest intersection with the access road and I was driven to hospital. I was concvinced I must be concussed, considering I’d hit my head and also lost consciousness, but thankfully the doctor assured me the two were not related, it was the pain that made me faint and my presentation indicated that I hadn’t sustained a head injury. I’m left with some solid road rash and a swollen bruised elbow, my back right shoulder is in spasm and mobility is limited, my right lower back is also in spasm but improving fast and I can walk around pretty happily. All in all I’m mighty grateful to have come off so lightly. I was intentionally riding conservatively and still manged to take a serious hit. - Patient fell off metal bleachers with no end cap. Took 6 internal running stitches and 72 staples to close.
Compartment syndrome is a medical emergency and it needs to be recognized early. A similar situation may occur when an IO cannula is deployed in the wrong position or dislodged during the treatment. That is why you would want to make sure your IO device is in place. There are several ways to verify IO placement: 1. Check for aspiration of bone marrow 2. Flush and watch for swelling 3. Are the medications injected via the IO taking effect on the patient? 4. If available, bedside doppler may be effective in correct position confirmation. Early signs of compartment syndrome - Severe pain, swelling and redness of the affected limb Compartment syndrome is a rare complication associated with IO access. It may occur when the cannula is dislodged from the bone or over penetrated it. Therefore, correct location must be verified by aspiration of bone marrow, saline flush and observation of extravasation signs. I felt present, light yet intense, and connected to everything. Menstruation is such an interesting experience, I often felt connected to a deep part of myself when I am bleeding. During this time I often go more inward, connect to Gaia wisdom, literally and metaphorically shed something, and remember that I am an untamed feline, fierce and powerful, carrying creative life force and connected to death.
