I’ve been a big fan of Run the Jewels since I first heard RTJ2 back in 2014. Since then we’ve had RTJ3, which I really liked, but didn’t think was necessarily on the same level as RTJ2. The record wasn’t as in your face and aggressive. They took what seemed as a more laid back approach. With this new record, it seems to be a decent blend of RTJ2 and 3. Which sounds perfect, right? Well, for some reason this record isn’t hitting as hard for me as I would have hoped. Don’t get me wrong, Mike and Jamie are two of the best in the hip hop game currently. There are some really great topical songs on here, with killer fucking production and some great features, but as a whole, it just didn’t hit me as hard as I was hoping it would. Maybe I’m just more hyped about other hip hop at the moment? I still think RTJ2 is my favorite of theirs, but I’ll still continue to support and listen to everything these guys put out. Additional mixing by Ali Jaffar. The music is performed on a setup I call The Lionsnake: no-input feedback and mouthpiece-less trumpet. The ego becomes part lion-tamer, part snake charmer. The Lionsnake is unpredictable and uncontrollable - you can only ride it like a wave. A giant tidal wave of noise that would’ve have left Noah and his Ark at the bottom of the barrel of tales. And the trumpet - this is about war. Not angels. The endless trumpet call to troops, carrying them into conflicts across our histories. Noise is bred in the bowels of capitalism. The factories of England that revealed to Marx the savage exploitation of The Have-Nots by The Haves. The noise of airports, trains and ships that pollute our shared acoustic space and hurt the most vulnerable in society: children. The racket of construction that gentrifies neighborhoods once held dear by communities who cannot afford higher rents. Cities that commodify noise by installing bandaid barriers to keep out the belch of automobiles. If you think noise is just annoyance, think again: it is the ultimate disruptor. It is both an object (measured by an equation of decibels that allows authorities to wield disciplinary power over us) and a medium (for thinking, for conceiving, for disturbing). This historical moment is anything but a time for convention. Clearly we need an entire restructuring of the things we agree upon because our lives depend on it. RYAN MCGINLEY - Ryan made this beautiful little book with images stuck into it from the series we had just completed as a book - MOONMILK. I remember him giving it to me on a freezing night in NYC. I had just walked to his house from Patti Smiths - so was already euphoric - and this just happens made that cold December day even sweeter. As his note mentions the book was an early inspiration to Ryan - I can imagine the amount of research that goes into such a project as MOONMILK. One of the things I remember about working with ryan (besides him being incredibly kind) was that he asked to keep the book small and simple - he pulled out a little book out of his backpack and said something along the lines of - like this something that someone can just pull out of their bag. A lot of artists think making a bigger book gives their work more ‘wow’ when it’s also all about ergonomics and intimacy. I also remember stacks - towers of little 6x4 prints on his table - literally what looked like thousands of images. I’ve always been amazed by an artists ability to ‘cull’ and reduce to a fine consistency a full body of work... I call it ‘culling’ as editing is a brutal and difficult process. As I always say - you got to kill some of your little babies to make the other stronger... I recall ryan being a master of that. Deftones - Ohms Indie Store Exclusive Gold Variant The wait is over! Its been four years since the last Deftones album, Gore was released in 2016, and it was well worth the wait. Ohms does not disappoint! It is a good blend of their continued elemental experiments while still delivering their heavier aggressive sounds as well. @deftones @repriserecs . . . Ohms is the ninth studio album by American alternative metal band Deftones, released on September 25, 2020, through Reprise Records. It is their first album on which Stephen Carpenter utilizes a nine-string guitar. The cover art was designed by Frank Maddocks, who had worked with Deftones on each of their albums since White Pony. There are total of 12,995 dots on the cover art. Many fans believed that the design paid tribute to the bands original bassist Chi Cheng, who died in 2013, as the eyes that appear on the cover art lined up closely with a photo of him. Band drummer Abe Cunningham stated in an interview that this was merely a coincidence, however. He added that the cover art idea reminded him of the 1980s, specifically the music video for Princes 1984 song When Doves Cry. Shortly before the albums release, Deftones launched the Adopt a Dot campaign, allowing for people to purchase one of the dots on the artwork as their own. A photo of the purchaser would then appear as the dot they purchased and be a part of the Ohms Adopt a Dot digital experience viewable online. All of the proceeds from the campaign were given to both the UC Davis Childrens Hospital and Crew Nation relief fund. The band began teasing the albums release with a week-long digital campaign in August 2020. A sonoridade depressiva e o clima meio sombrio tomam conta do disco, e acabou firmando-se como característica da banda. Várias canções falam dos vícios e foram compostas ainda na turnê de Facelift. O som pesado e o vocal único de Layne Staley, com o apoio de Jerry Cantrell, tornam o som do AIC perfeito. . Certa vez Layne Staley falou sobre as letras depressivas e o mofo como as pessoas encaravam. Now, working with real bones is something extraordinarily special for me. The albums that shaped Mizmor - pt. III Hell - I (2009) Where do I even start with this one? As many of you know, I am the live drummer and a recurring session vocalist for Hell, the one-man project of my good friend MSW. Being involved in the project has never curbed the impact and influence of its sonic qualities on me though. My first exposure to the music of Hell was going over to MSW’s house to record the vocals to “Brutus,” the first track on this album. Although we were both headed down a similar path of heaviness through Sorceress and mutual personal exploration, the places he took the sound were breathtaking. The elegantly restrained drumming, the warmth of the extremely low guitars, the clanging of the bass as if the strings were about to fall off, all worked together so effectively to create this sonic hellscape. Powerful. This album became an instant favorite and was on repeat for my friends and I in Salem for quite some time. It’s the album where my shrieking vocals ripened, cementing a truly evil sound for the album. That’s what I love most about “I” - it gives you that feeling in your stomach that something is wrong/evil. As a kid raised Christian, whenever I got this feeling from music, it both scared and attracted me. It made me feel like I was sinning just by listening. MSW is one of the most talented individuals I know and I’m so grateful for my time in this life making music with him and being his friend. We’ve played in bands together since we were 14/15 and there’s no question that I am a different musician because of him. Mizmor’s doom sound would be a whole heck of a lot less sludgy and mean if it weren’t for Hell. Who knows if the shriek would have evolved to occupy such an important space in my vocal approach if not for this album/sound. MSW is such a brutally talented artist and the heavy begins here. As a physical media collector, these are the types of things that get me excited. I’ve been waiting for a release of Ari Aster’s Midsommar Director’s Cut since seeing it in theaters a year ago. I love the fact that A24 keeps collectors in mind by releasing high quality products like this.
