Wrote a little bit for [@recess.net.au / @ace_open] on the current state of black representation in American media & really hurting for escapism via Martine Syms superlative semiotic video essay {A Pilot For A Show About Nowhere}. It features Dave Chappelles 8:46 as well as The Weeknds (@theweeknd) After Hours, which is probably my album of the year no matter what. Though Chappelle is on record on some shit regarding trans people, 8:46 is still one of the most lucid assessments of right now full stop. The catalogue essay is called Supercut from Escape From LA. Its a supercut of an uncut essay I wrote, which is like 17 pages and it gets into a lot of other stuff Syms video covers (the late 60s TV program Julia, Oprah, Mary Tyler Moore, & more) and a lot it doesnt (the J. Cole x Noname beef as well as a round up of a lot of black music being made in a reactionary way to this moment, as well as the import of dark fantasy, black fame (especially for Chappelle), & neo-noir). Maybe if anyone wants to publish that in full, hit me up, & maybe it will come out in whole or bitby bit if I still feel good about it. Be well, everyone. Because I spent so much of my life expecting to be married and to have a family by now, among other things. I have literally been told by multiple strangers “Oh no! Your time is running out!” thus, the rambles you are about to read, if you stay with me ☺️ ✨ I spent 18 years within a bubble and then 4 more years at an institution where “ring by spring” was the norm and almost pressured, and having babies is a woman’s job once married. The majority, if not all, of my friends from CU are engaged or married, pregnant or parents, homeowners, etc. Meanwhile I’m trying to kill it as a barista/art instructor/small business-owning painter, who will probably be renting where she lives for quite a few more years. And there’s no shame in that! But more often than not, I feel like I’m failing at doing what’s in front of me because of old habits and things I’ve been taught throughout my childhood and young adult life. ✨ I promise this is not a plea for pity, nor am I asking for praise. I’ve especially learned in the last year, as a single woman, that all of those things I listed above don’t equal success. They may be some of my deepest and strongest desires, but they aren’t my sole purpose. That’s pretty liberating and empowering honestly! ✨ I’m so thankful I didn’t get married at 22. I’m so thankful I didn’t marry my first love. I’m thankful to have just celebrated 5 years outside of abuse. I’m thankful for the last year of singleness. Even though there were so many dark moments within all of it. ✨ I’ve deconstructed my life, moved, and rebuilt myself and my surroundings quite a few times since graduation. Multiple identity crises 😅 For a long while I have minimized my pain and the trauma. I’m sure I’ll continue to struggle with it. But I’m riding on todays sporadic confidence boost and hoping to encourage someone. ✨ It may suck sometimes. But it’s OK where I’m at right now. At 27. And it’s okay where you’re at too. When people say types of nail polish, all they refer to are the glam colors, cremes, holos, glitters. And they are all great! But what makes them even more beautiful are the base coat and the top coat. Most of us skip these two as we dont have that much time or just excuse for being lazy. So lets revise, base coat is the first thing you should apply before jumping to any nail paint. Is it important? Yes! They often contain ingredients like vitamin e, calcium, all of which help out nails and also help our nails from staining(to a little extent). Then goes the polish, everyones fav part! And what about the top coat? Cause the step that you miss here is the reason your nails go from looking wow to average! Firstly, top coat hardens quickly and enhances the life of our mani or the polish, gives a gloss like shine, and prevents any scratches or peeling and even chipping off of the polish. Also they do come in matte finish as well. And if you do nail art then thats a must to just save up and dry all your work underneath. In this picture I have used the same polish. Pic 1 is just the polish, so its more prone to scratches thats seen all over where as in Pic 2 I have added a top coat to it and you can see the difference, right?
