Weve created musical care packages to send to them where they live, with music-making activities that you can do without much space, an instrument or even an internet connection. There are also journalling exercises, colouring-in, recipes, craft activities and a stamped-addressed envelope and postcards so that they can stay in touch with us and their friends. We are also putting together digital resources to share weekly over the seven weeks of the summer holidays, to help young people to express themselves through music, and connect with us and each other. With these resources, we hope to spark joy 🌟, and support positive mental health and creativity in a time of real hardship for many. The Pocket // November 2014 When I was a kid, my greatest annoyance in life was that my Papa (Nana), seemed to love all other kids just as much as me. He had a sort of magic way with kids, and even babies. Come to think of it, that magic might have had something to do with the lifesavers he always kept in his left shirt pocket. We called it his candy vali pocket. It was a well known fact that if you needed a sweet treat, Papa and his pocket always had you covered. As I got older, the candy pocket, turned into the petty cash pocket. Sometimes it would be $10 for gas, other times $5 for McDonalds. No amount of explaining that I had a job and didnt need money would make it stop. Finally I accepted that he would never actually say I love you, but he was showing it in this way. One of the last times I had a proper conversation with my Papa he was in the nursing home. I hated visiting him there. He would always ask me to bring his favourite foods (which he was no longer allowed to have), and he would say doctor nu puch, doctor nu puch - which meant, ask the doctor when I can go home? That last conversation though, he was actually present. He asked me about the kids, and Charn, and why I wouldnt get a normal job 🤦🏽♀️. Then, just before I got up to go, the look on his face changed. I understood this to be his memory loss and Alzheimers, suddenly I was his little Rajo. The present moment was gone, and his precious little granddaughter was standing in front of him. He put his hand in his pocket, but it was empty. There was no candy, and there was no petty cash. . My Papa passed away three weeks after that last visit with him. In an article posted on July 31, 2020, titled: “This is what Black on Asian crime looks like” from online publishing platform Medium, Ken Dow wrote a heart-breaking story of what it was like growing up in a poor inner-city neighborhood in the 90s. “There was enough poverty and hardship to go around for all races living there. Poor Asians, Latinos, Whites—you name it, we had it,” Dow writes . Dow made very clear at the beginning of his article “Yes, we can still talk about this while supporting BLM.” . “As is the case for many poor Chinese, my family worked in one of those Chinese takeout restaurants—the cones that you see on every city block where the mend and food is fairly identical to the one just down the street. It’s a competitive market where prices are low and doing just above breaking even for the business is considered doing quite well.” . Dow’s family restaurant served the black community. The prices were kept low and the savings were passed onto the neighborhood. In the twenty-five years of operating in the neighborhood, they only raised prices once—a marginal amount compared to inflation. . Regardless of the family’s efforts to help the African-American community by keeping prices low and buying fake jewelry from locals who had no other sources of income to help them out; they were still targeted. The average employment time for their delivery drivers was three months. Meaning, on average, about the three-month mark, a delivery driver would be mugged, robbed, and/or beaten at least once during a delivery—some drivers were so severely beaten and robbed, they were sent to the hospital. . Community interaction didn’t matter. In the end, the African-American community is no “less racist” than the white community they always try to blame for their troubles. . Dow was regularly insulted and harassed on good days. On bad days, he was beaten, knifed and robbed while walking home to school, from school, to work, from work, from the park after playing basketball. . A common stereotype of sexuality professionals is that they are “hypersexual and that their “obsession” with sex is what motivates them to enter the field. However, research tells us that this view is inaccurate. In a study published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, hundreds of sex educators, researchers, and therapists were surveyed about their sex lives and their reasons for entering the field. The three most commonly cited reasons for becoming a sexuality professional were “the field is interesting” (94%), there is still “a lot left to learn about sexuality” (84%), and the desire to “improve sexual health” (79%). Overwhelmingly, people’s motivations for entering the field didnt have anything to do with their own sex lives. In terms of sexual behavior, while sexuality professionals reported more acceptance of sexual diversity, they were actually less likely to report having had casual sex in the past year compared to the national average; however, they did report much higher rates of condom usage. Certainly, there is individual variability—some folks have much higher levels of sexual behavior than others. However, the overall trend tells us that the stereotypes about sexuality professionals aren’t grounded in reality. When they need us, when they are the most vulnerable we are not there for them.. We should remember that a time will come when we will also be in this stage, and if at that time our grandchildren or the young generation doesnt even care about us, how would we feel? It would be horrible! The thought of not having anyone to look after me when I grow old gives me shivers! We all compare ourselves all the time.⠀ ⠀ I believe a better advice is When you compare yourself with others, try to see the bigger picture.⠀ ⠀ What I mean by this is that we usually just compare one thing about us with one thing about someone else. ⠀ ⠀ We see how big someone elses muscles are and we feel bad about our own bodies for example. What we miss in comparisons like this it that the guy with the big muscles might have them because he feels so much anger in his life that he has to take it out in the gym. Or maybe he feels so insecure about his personality that he needs to work out really hard to feel that he is worth something.⠀ ⠀ We dont know. We just see the muscles.⠀ ⠀ So next time you compare yourself with someone else, ask yourself, what do I have that this person dont have? Happy Monday Mamas. Danielle ordered our very first batch of suits in 2019 and has now used the suit for two summers! Were so honored she shared her story with us: I felt (and still do feel) amazing in this suit. The coverage is perfect for me, and I actually feel way more confident wearing this than I do in any other suits I currently own. Nursing in public isnt even something I worry about anymore. I feel confident in my choice to breastfeed (even into toddlerhood now that my son is two), and I love that I have a swimsuit that makes that simple and no-nonsense. I dont have to worry about having to keep the boob hes not nursing on covered, and there is nothing fussy to deal with or worry about. The summer after my son was born, I didnt wear a swimsuit or go anywhere that one was necessary. I avoided situations and fun activities because I couldnt bring myself to try on or buy a suit that I didnt think I would feel okay in. Fast forward to the next summer once I had found my Orolait suit, and it is a completely different story. Going swimming or being outside is no longer something I dread or worry about. I can enjoy swimming like I did as a kid (because I really love swimming!) and know that I have this suit that helps me feel amazing. Im not saying that this is a magic swimsuit that makes your body image issues go away. But I will say that having a suit that is designed for womens bodies (that are not all the same) by someone who 100% understands the fears and feelings around wearing one makes all the difference. You still have to do the work, but dont let not having a swimsuit that you feel amazing in be the reason you dont go to the beach with your kids. Often times new parents are surprised at how little it takes to feed their newborn. When they see the small amount of colostrum their body is producing in the first days after birth they will sometimes worry if that is in fact enough. Most of the time, it is! Your newborn only needs about 1-1.5tsp (5-7ml) of your colostrum in the first two days of life. By day 3 they are eating more, about 3/4oz-1oz (22ml-30ml) per feeding. More times than not your body is making enough for your newborn in those first few days. If you’re pregnant and planning to breastfeed, get informed about how your body works, what helps this process, what can hinder the process and how much your baby needs.
