Let’s talk Trikonasana - triangle pose. A common instruction heard in yoga class is, “fit yourself between two panes of glass” Would you agree? 👎🏽👍🏽 To be blunt, were not fans. Performing trikonasana between the glass can be damaging to the hip joint. In fact we know of far too many yoga practitioners in their 40s and 50s whove had hip replacement surgeries. Although genetics have a part too, these yogis all blame repeated trikonasanas (with both thighs externally rotated and pushed forward) for their hip damage. Here’s why: 🦵The hips are a ball and socket joint which means that in order for the head of the femur to rotate in the socket the femur heads need to be integrated. Tucking the tailbone way under, externally rotating both thigns, and pushing the femurs forward does the opposite of integrate. How can you create integration? Give these quick alignment tips a try and tell us how it feels: 1️⃣ From Downdog - step your right foot between your hands, spin your left heel down parallel to the back of your mat, and align your feet heel to arch. Settle all four corners evenly. 2️⃣ Tone your legs by energetically drawing your feet towards each other 3️⃣ Place both hands to the inside of your right foot and walk them off the front left corner of your mat 6-8 inches resisting in the opposite direction with your pelvis 4️⃣ Keep your pelvis back and your left thigh rotated in, place your left hand on your left hip as you draw your right sitting bone under to externally rotate your front right leg 5️⃣ Without losing that, slowly begin to straighten your right leg and move your right fingertips to the outside of your right shin 6️⃣ Stretch you left finger tips towards the sky and from your pelvis into your feet, press down into the earth and extend from your belly through your spine, arms, and head *️⃣ The most common misalignment is not taking your feet far enough apart! Pregnancy Update! Finally actually FEELING pregnant! . (This is not me but @carolineinkc is rocking this pose) . . This pregnancy has been interesting in that I had not actually fully accepted its reality until recently. I would not say I was in denial, but it just did not feel real. Especially the part about there being 2! Yes I was super tired in the beginning (to the point of actually being slightly depressed) and yes I have been growing in the belly region for a while now. That said, it was not until maybe a week or so ago that I really FELT it. . Mentally and physically. Maybe the physical elements made it click in my mind. The weekend before last was when I really felt the weight of my belly become noticeably heavier. Enough to need to break out the body pillow at night. I am experiencing lots of Braxton Hicks, which I never felt with little man. I am finally starting to feel some movement (though my anterior placentas make that more difficult), and my lower back has as of a few days ago decided to notice the pregnancy as well🙄 . . I have had to pay more attention to my posture while sitting or walking, and may even have to break out the belly support band here soon. OH and Im hungry ALL the time! So much of the first 12-15 weeks was spent with a weird appetite and not being hungry as often as I should be. Welp, that problem is gone, and now I want to eat everything. . . As of the last couple weeks, working out has come in the form of packing, moving, cleaning and re-cleaning my house, as well as chasing my fire ball son. I do plan on jumping back into my 20 minutes a morning here soon, as well as adding in more yoga. . . As for the differences with a twin pregnancy, I dont have much to offer. Welcome Day6 :) The pose is cobra pose or locust. Here I’m sharing 2 videos. The first one is how I training my back strength with wide arm variation and full pose. Ending is tradition to dhanurasana. I’m sharing short backbend strenth practice but this kind of practice important in every backbend pose. It’s not only flexibility, we also need strong back muscles. Second is fun variation of movement using yoga wheel. I think this is quietly fun 😅but you also need strength to grounding well. Without it the wheel maybe going somewhere 😶 And when you using it find right place the right place you feel no pain. As you see in bhujangasana I really want to asking you try to using upper body and make your leg super super strong. Swipe and see the last photo of cobrapose. ( I shared it before so you can also find it in on my post too) This is what I think important thing in cobrapose. About pulcivbone: it really takes time to grounding. If this is tough, using blanket or slightly lift up is also fine. I discovered Yin Yoga about 6 years ago. The approach to practicing Asana was so radically different compared to the traditional Hatha Yoga I’ve been used to. When you practice hip openers you notice an improvement in your range of motion, reduction in tightness and that wonderful emotional release.  Join us 10 days with hip opening practice. This challenge is for all levels and all kind of modifications and props are welcome! 🧘🏼‍♀️ Day 1️⃣ with happy baby or malasana - I chose happy baby. Seeing my little one last year giggling while lying flat on his back, swinging his feet up in the air and grabbing the outside edges of his feet as his knees bent in toward the shoulders. I finally understood why Happy Baby was so aptly named.  I love this pose. It is a major hip opener. It stretches the inner thighs and groin as well as the back of the legs, or the hamstrings. It releases the spine and sacrum. Scoliosis is a condition that can affect us in a lot more ways than we think. Welcome day 3 #aloboutrangeofmotion :) the pose is #wideleggedforwardfold ( #uphavisthakpmasana) Here I’m sharing 2 videos and 1 photo.( video is speed up xxxxx) The first one is few poses of how I stretch my hip area and how I doing middle split using wall. In here I looks like a just stretching but actually my legs are working a lot. Specially while on middle split practice I engage my leg muscles. How I engaged muscles? Make a yogi toe.😅 It May be sounds funny, but yogi toe is helpful to engage leg muscles. I think it is also possible when you pointing your toe but in my case this is working well. The second video is more about working on active way for leg strength and step of our today’s pose. For more modification, you can bent your knee or using blanket under the hips and making height. Why we asking using props in here is to avoid rounding spine. Do forwardbend with kind nice spine. Use many props if you need and find a good place you feel your entire body is open. Also for modification, do pose using wall like me( first video): recline pose is always keep our spine nice. This wasn’t an easy challenge (none of mine really are ), but this one asked for a deeper tuning in, further awareness and intelligence, that made it extra ‘interesting’, I hope! As we talked in yesterday’s #backbend, this one locks the shoulders first, but leaves the legs free to fly and dangle, which means that, they need extra engagement to remain straight. Yesterday we anchored through the legs and started to arch from there. Today, we rest top of the shoulders & chest on the ground, then build the rest of the asana. Though the shape is similar if you flip them, gravity, the floor/wall make a big difference in how we FEEL it, what areas can surrender and which ones need to actively participate. For this one, use a wall in front if you have fear of going over (unlikely, but do it if it gives you peace of mind, just make sure you’re not too close and legs can fully extend). A folded mat/blanket under the shoulder line, or 2 blocks under each shoulder, will give you enough space to breathe and sink chest if you’re having trouble with that. For most of us, it’s harder to arch with hands under shoulders, like in the pic (easier to pop into Chin stand but, once up, if you can extend arms behind, you’ll be more comfortable). When you project legs, they’ll take the hips with them and the pressure in the backbend will go into throat & neck. Stay BACK, still on the shoulder line and upper ribs, sternum pushing down as well as arms. This is an amazing asana to keep exploring so, adjust it to your needs and thank you for the love, support and commitment put!!! Comment below if you finished and how it went!! Much love... Calf Capobianco, named after our friend @dr.robyncapo 🦵👩‍⚕️, is as fun to do as it is to say. • Dr. Capobianco performed a study in 2019 that observed the differences between just stretching the calf muscles vs. adding self-massage with therapy balls to that stretching. 🔵 Her and her team then measured flexibility and strength of the target muscles with and without rolling. 📚 YOGA SCHOOL: Yin & Yang practices. . SAME BUT DIFFERENT! Yin yoga rename some of the Asana postures with the sole intention to prevent the student to go with the same mentally and intensity as if they were practicing yang. . ☯️ For instance, here we have Dragon pose for yin yoga, which requires long holds so it can access the deep hip flexor, groin and quadriceps. We dont have to pay attention to alignment (knee pass the ankle) in Yin yoga, because the ultimate goal is to play with different patterns of movement to find a subtle sensation, rather than deep intensity. That way we can learn to find the proper depth and remain still as we hold the pose to affect the tissues and the fascia. This pose primarily targets the liver, gall bladder, spleen, stomach, kidney and urinary bladder meridians. Yin practices focus primarily in introspection. . 🤸On the other hand we have Anjaneyasana pose for yang yoga, which requires the engagement and activation of our pelvic floor muscles, abdominals and legs. Physically strengthens the quadriceps and gluteus muscles, stretches the psoas and hips, and expands your chest, and lungs. Internally, it stimulates the internal organs at the abdomen. My persistence and positivity has given me the strength to help my body heal. I’ve been experimenting with a vegan diet over the last month. You may know I’ve had lots of my large bowel and small bowel removed through stage 4 cancer. (The part of the large bowel removed meant that I have had to retrain my body to stop myself rushing off to the loo every 5 minutes, so a high fibre high diet would have prevented me from leaving the toilet door let alone my house). I had to have 70% of my liver resected and gall bladder removed. I suffered immensely for years not being able to eat one thing and another. I discovered I had bile salts malabsorption which means I must stick to a strict low fat diet and a vegan diet contains lots of high fat! Good fats or bad fats, there’s no exceptions when it comes to bile salts malabsorption. . I am quietly excited to say my body has been finely tuned to manage a vegan diet that is currently suiting me and I’m loving it. (It’s been a rollercoaster I won’t lie!) I’ve had to deny my body of most fruits and vegetables for years, simply because my body couldn’t take it. When it comes to following diets, I strongly believe you have to do what’s right for you at the present time in your life. The more I think about the words we use, the more it becomes apparent that the way we use them ends up rewiring our thought process in an imperceptible and yet insidious manner — to the point that we don’t identify the issue until it’s too late, once it’s been internalized. And it’s up to us to uproot it, then. . I’ve been thinking about the concept of “acceptance” — so ubiquitous in a yoga practice. “Santosha”, the true epitome of equanimity — or is it? . When do you use the word “acceptance”? . Acceptance and resignation are very different things. The former is positive, embracing, taking what comes our way as it is and rejoicing in the process, without asking for more or a feeling of lacking. Resignation, however, has a bitter connotation. It’s negative, as it expresses an act of giving up, of settling — taking what comes and yet resenting it at the same time. . But how do we use “acceptance” in mainstream modern yoga, these days? . I find that we use it with the same duality as resignation, directed towards that which we do not like only: accept that situation that you can’t change, accept this sensation that you don’t like, that person that annoys you, the boss that keeps making demands, the fact that life doesn’t go as you wanted it to go. It’s always juxtaposed to the (perceived) “bad” side of duality. . “Accept” the beautiful sunshine raining on you this morning, the smiles of your kids, the exhilarating feeling of this pose... — said nobody ever. . We only “have to” (duty) “accept” (resign ourselves to) the ugliness. . What have we done to this word? To this beautiful concept of acceptance? Is it truly “equanimity” if it doesn’t apply equally to the good and the bad? If our language doesn’t connect it to both, are we truly there?
