Season highlight # 2: MU TRAINING INSTITUTE! Last fall @eswombat lead an Asian American scene study class with a group of 11 individuals from various acting backgrounds. Some had been in a Mu show. Some were still in school. Some just thought “what the heck... I’m gonna do that fun acting thing!” Over 9 sessions the class looked at works by Leah Nanako Winkler, Lauren Yee, Lloyd Suh, etc. All culminating in a showcase of scenes performed in front of friends and family. If it matters to anyone @kevinqduong thought it was one of the best nights of semi-theater. Words, have you ever considered how powerful they are? About a little over four years ago, we saw a lot of family for my husbands paternal grandma’s funeral. A random auntie (in Asian families, everybody is an auntie or uncle lol) came up to me and told me that I’m too fat and do not match my husband. I was left speechless and kind of in shock. I stumbled out that I just had a baby 2 months ago, but she didn’t think that was a good reason lol. Then I just finally told her my husband loves me and didn’t mind and moved on with my life. It has always stuck to the back on my mind though because it was hurtful. Someone has also once told me that in a relationship one person will always be more beautiful than the other...then said my husband was handsome. Okayyy, they were probably trying to tell me I’m the ugly one 😂 of course I think my husband is handsome 😍 There needs to be that attraction there in the first place! Anyway, last weekend we took that picture on the right at our grandpa’s funeral and it reminded me of that conversation from grandma’s funeral (on the left). With so many medical professionals lacking essential protective clothing whilst fighting Covid-19, @rrayro, @amytiefermann and I along with an army of volunteer sewers have been able to self fund and produce over 300 protective gowns to donate to our doctors and nurses to wear. An 18-year-old who was grocery shopping was called chink and told to go back where they came from. These are some of the stories revealed in a new youth-led study showing that one-quarter of Asian American young adults have been the targets of racism over the past year. The discrimination they detail primarily takes the form of verbal harassment, shunning and cyberbullying. The report was released Thursday by the Stop AAPI Hate Youth Campaign, a high school internship program at Stop AAPI Hate, a national center that collects reports of coronavirus discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The study details the emotional toll of growing anti-Asian sentiment around the country. Nearly 8 of 10 respondents expressed anger over the epidemic of hate against Asians. The findings come from nearly 1,000 interviews of Asian American young adults conducted by a team of 87 Asian American high school students this summer. 4 years ago, I remember interning at @kohls as one of my first internships. I remember my first two weeks there, my manager asked me why my clothing I wore was baggy and didn’t fit me; truth was, I couldn’t afford professional clothing, so I borrowed my dad’s because that’s all I had. When he heard this, he offered to discount my clothing, and it was the first time I’d actually purchased professional clothing during that time, and this changed my perspective on how first impressions make a huge difference. Every year, I would send him a Christmas card and visit him to bring goodies. However, I stopped for a year because I moved to the Bay Area. A few months ago, I heard from my sister that she was interviewing for Kohl’s and said she was interviewing for the same location; I asked her if my manager was still there, and it was him. He gave an offer to her on the spot. Fast forward to now, I paid him a visit again; he was so happy to see me; he said he never forgot about me and was proud of me. He even had my Christmas cards on his board in his office! Why I share this: Never forget those who first believed in you. People sometimes don’t remember what you say, but people remember how you made them feel. A simple thank you is sometimes all you need. Yesterday I had the moving experience of meeting Marie, who was one of the Queensland Ambulance Paramedic’s who treated me on the day of my injury. Marie was one of four Paramedics who stabilized me at Ballymore before transferring me to hospital, she recalled the moment in great detail much of which I’ve never heard. To say I’m thankful and grateful seems insignificant because no words can explain the feelings you have towards someone who has saved your life. Thank god we went for coffee in public because I would’ve been a blubbering mess otherwise! Thanks to Marie and all the other incredible Paramedics out there doing amazing work. With most of us living through these tiny little squares it’s sometimes easy to forget that behind the scenes is a real human, just like ourselves, who has struggles just like we do. It’s so easy to get into a routine of scrolling and comparing, scrolling and comparing, scrolling and comparing. I’m incredibly guilty of this... I see photos of beautiful, shiny, smiley humans and instantly wish I was them, but just like me, they may be having their own issues and worries. What we see in these photos is a moment in time, a snap second of their day, the one they are comfortable showing. We can never know what is going on behind closed doors and in the minds and hearts of the people we compare our own lives to. So I guess what I just want to remind you all on this Sunday eve is to never compare yourself to others, we all have our own paths, and to be kind. Life is challenging as hell and times are hard right now so remember to check in on your loved ones team. Sadly, a few days ago he had a horrible motorcycle accident and is now in critical condition with spinal damage. His recovery will be long, hard and of course, not cheap. The final #SurvivorSaturday of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth is very special because its one of our own! Lauren Peyton was treated at #MSKKids, our pediatric program, when she was fourteen and is now a Clinical Nurse IV at #MSKMonmouth. She was first diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and later had myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Lauren needed a stem cell transplant and was matched with a donor from Germany. They were able to meet in person and are now close friends who text every day and even have matching tattoos to symbolize their connection! Lauren was inspired by her own nurses to become a nurse. She said, Every day I’m really grateful for everything MSK has done for me. Having that support behind you as a patient inspired me to provide that to people.” Lauren also added, What COVID has taught us, and what being a survivor has taught me, is that you can plan as much as you want but you cannot control what happens. Heres a little feel good story! A few days earlier, a local resident called to report that her daughter, Victoria and Victorias friends bicycle, were taken from the area of the sidewalk of Lincoln Ave at Baker Street. The information that was given was a blue pickup truck was seen in the area and the operator of the truck put the bicycles in the cab of the truck which was filled with other various metals. The children and parents began to lose hope that they would never see their bicycles again until earlier this morning, SPPOU members, Officers Khun and Johnston noticed a blue pickup truck in the same area with a bicycle (matching the description of the bicycle reported) and stopped the vehicle. Officers spoke with the operator who was determined to be a local scrap metal collector. After speaking with the operator it was determined that it was a simple misunderstanding as the bicycles were left on the sidewalk and the bicycles were returned! Choosing costumes, decorating pumpkins, and getting special treats brings joy to many children at Halloween. Some Halloween traditions may look different this year to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still plenty of ways families can have fun while avoiding the scare of being exposed to or spreading the virus. Most importantly, keep doing what you have been doing: avoiding large gatherings, keeping a distance of six feet from others, wearing cloth face coverings (think superhero!), and washing hands often. Some ideas for ways to keep safety steps in place while celebrating: Virtual costume parties & parades Use video chats for an online party with friends and family and show off costumes and play games. Have fun with it! In cold climates, this may be the first time your child can wear a costume that isnt buried under a parka! Outdoor costume parades are another option, if it is possible for everyone to stay at least 6 feet apart and wear cloth face coverings. Remember: a costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth face covering unless it has multiple layers of breathable fabric and covers the mouth and nose snugly. If children plan to use their cloth face coverings as part of their costumes, they should not paint them since some paints contain toxins. Outdoor community events Look for community events focused on safe ways to have fun. These may include programs offered by a park district, arboretum, zoo or other outdoor venues in your area. Stay away from crowds and clustering, and follow safe distance rules even when outdoors. Avoid indoor events such as haunted houses. A local haunted forest or corn maze may be a better option, as long as cloth face covering use, physical distancing and one-way walk through is enforced. If you think there may be screaming, leave extra distance to lower the risk of spreading respiratory virus. Every single time Ps @jeffreyrachmat texted me and said, ‘Sid, you’re preaching yah for Sunday on.. (any given date)’, I would reply with a casual, ‘Sure thing! Okay!’... but then my stomach would start making strange noises and I have these cold sweats 😅 Of all the things that I currently do (writing songs, producing, leading worship, leading and caring for our team, etc), I know that preaching for our Sunday service is the hardest one for me to do. Not just because we have so many amazing preachers and teachers in our church, but because the responsibility to speak into the lives of many who are looking for answers (especially in our difficult season) is not a light one to carry. But I know that no matter how nervous I am as a messenger, I am always confident about the focus of the message: JESUS. I knew that as long as the message is about Jesus, everything is gonna be okay. D.L. Moody once said: “The preaching that this world needs most is the sermons in shoes that are walking with Jesus Christ.” I know I am a flawed and imperfect messenger, but as long as I am walking with Jesus, the message will always point to Him. I ran at least 5k every day in June and only have been able to appreciate what a great month it was in retrospect. The most special part was running at least once with every member of my family - something I’ve never done before and it means a lot to me. Overall I ran over 220km, achieved some virtual run goals, ran with new people, enjoyed the nature around us, got back on the trails and, to cap it all, on the last day of June, was able to do a socially distanced run with the @nbr_rungroup - the first in over 3 months.
