Mike and I participated in a huge, COMPLETELY PEACEFUL PROTEST in Philadelphia this afternoon. Still, the police unleashed tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowd (we thankfully left before the tear gassing started). There was no vandalism, no spray painting, no looting, and no provocative confrontation with the police. And still, The People were denied their fundamental constitutional rights and had military-grade weapons used on them by the very force tasked with ensuring their safety. We were denied our constitutional rights today; black men and woman, indigenous people, and all people of color are denied their constitutional rights every day in this country. I acknowledge that we are all digesting this moment differently based on our social location + history of trauma. This morning I spoke with a gf and listened as she described the trauma she experienced as a POC, her panic and sleeplessness. I’m here to share my view as a parent. My heart felt like it was breaking into a million pieces as my daughter watched her first Presidential debate (she’s in 6th grade now ~ was in 2nd grade in 2016), understanding that these are her first impressions of what civil discourse looks like between the leaders of a democracy, what it feels like - not interactions of human decency, listening and respect, but instead outright lies, megalomania and childlike interruptions. Feeling my deep disappointment and sadness that this is what is being hardwired into their brains as a model of leadership, that we have come to a point in history when this sort of traumatizing, belligerent behavior is acceptable for any adult, any human, let alone the President. When I woke her up for school this morning, she was relieved to wake up from a distressing dream that her class was fighting with one another. Thank Goddess for neuroplasticity and all the other positive role models and different examples of relating she is exposed to. You can judge me for letting her watch it, and yes, I would be foolish to expect anything more from 45. But in this house when you’re of the age to give a damn, we have these conversations. We do our part. We care. When she asked to march in the streets for Standing Rock, climate change, BLM - hand in hand, that’s what we did. I believe the sentiment in this first picture and for a long time, my interpretation of this meant I didn’t feel a necessity to share that I was/am bi-sexual to the broader public. Why did I need to label myself in order to ‘be’? I knew who I was - wasn’t that enough? I grew up in a family that went to the Unitarian Universalist church, spoke openly about gay rights, and with two gay aunts that we were close to (even lived with them at one point as my parents looked for a house when we moved to Tennessee). So there was never a question about whether or not my family would be accepting. I surrounded myself with friends who, minus the rare exception, were either loud allies or LGBTQ themselves. And I worked in environments (ie Viacom and Spotify) that were openly and encouraging of their employees to speak proudly about being a part of the LGBTQ community. By all accounts, I had no barriers that often times stop people from announcing their Pride with well, pride. And yet it wasn’t until I was 34 that I made a choice to publicly attach myself to the label of Bi-sexual. So what changed? A big part of it was my partner @burkieycp and the world, vocabulary, and perspectives that he introduced me to, both in his approach as an ally and his work through @youcanplayteam. But the other part was a realization that as idealistic as I would like things to be, as much as I would like to just ‘be’ without having to make a statement, many many many others do not have that choice, freedom, or privilege. And for those who are like me, many struggle with being met with phrases like “ok so you’re experimenting” or “oh so you’re actually just gay” or maybe worst, that they’re “just being selfish.” Being bisexual is not a phase or, especially in the case of women, something to super-serve your fantasies. It is not a greedy mentality or a “fallback” when dating the opposite gender gets tough. For me, it is a knowledge of myself that I am attracted to both men and women, to a human being and everything that makes them special. Promise I’m nearly done with the marathon content now. But just wanted to say how incredible these 2 people have been over the last 20 weeks while I’ve been training. I had forgotten how much time it takes to get ready for a marathon. Early mornings, long weekend runs, and plenty of boring running chat. I’ve run over 1,200km in training. That’s a lot of time where I’ve not been around. @msaimeephillips and Sunday are the best and I couldn’t ask for a more supportive duo. Luckily I now have 2 months off work to spend more time with them, and to reset and recharge before going back to work in Jan. Also wanted to say THANK YOU to anyone who reached out to me yesterday. Last night was jimmys 6th birthday party🎂🎁🥳 and I could not have gotten through it without #medicalmarijuana My body is still a bit off from symptoms of #fibromyalgia Totally sucks, especially when you need to be “on”. Over the last few days, I have struggled with words to address the tragedies, inequality and violence that have affected our community in New York City. The senseless murder of George Floyd have left us all with anger, confusion, resentment, sadness and loss. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to march with peaceful demonstrators in New York, a city that I love so much. There were people from all walks of life, young, old, black and white standing together in solidarity against black racial injustices. I could feel the hurt and anger in the masses because America has fallen short on its promise to insure freedom and equality for all since its Declaration of Independence. As a father, I was touched by the young people who felt that their future is compromised. We have fallen short as a mindful nation and the well being of future generations have been impacted. This is heartbreaking. Our leadership is at its best mediocre. There is clearly a pattern of cruelty suffered by black Americans and denied by others for generations and we cannot continue as a conscious nation without addressing the underlying issues that have destroyed our sense of unity, love, peace and kindness. The double standards in this country need to be acknowledged. As a Father foremost and Founder of Rawspace, a company solely based on bringing community experiences into our spaces, we will adhere to the highest standards of ethics related to equality, diversity and inclusion. You have our commitment on this. In Pakistan gender norms are very tightly defined, those ideals are further reinforced and propagated to the point of being blatant propaganda by the media through film and drama. Women are portrayed as being shy, demure and helpless. Whenever something goes wrong in their lives they just breakdown into prayer and things magically seem to work out for them, they never fight for themselves that’s a no no. Strong independent women are always portrayed as evil, something that corrupts the household and society as a whole. This perverse ideology is widespread in Pakistan, even amongst the educated class. “Ziada independent maat ho” (don’t get too independent) is something all girls in this country have heard at least once in their lives. In many instances if the woman gets too independent she must be punished. God forbid a woman from the latter segment decides to take on a man publicly for which all the evidence suggests he’s complicit, she will instead be brought to the guillotine and be at the behest of a vicious trial by media where her entire character will be assassinated. The man will always conveniently twist religion and gaslight his way out. The aforementioned narrative never really changed. With each passing year it’s just gotten more and more twisted where the pretense of religion and culture are incessantly used to justify the behavior of all the badly behaved men in this country. The sad thing about all this is that people fall for it each time. Look he’s a family man, he’s a haafiz also he’d never do that, his wife wears a hijab; umm is you stupid? This time around after the motorway incident, Marwah and the journalist in Turbat I hope people don’t fall prey to the above mentioned tactics again. The outdated narrative about moral policing women in this country needs to be burnt to the ground and Pakistan immediately needs to self reflect and have a serious conversation with itself, is there really a place for women in this country or are we going to continue to occasionally import a bunch of intrepid white women to push the fake narrative that Pakistan really is a great country for women after all.
