We’re making all the right pandemic purchases chez Holmes/Wise. No good excuse for not having acquired this on vinyl way sooner, though I’ve been reading the incredible memoir of @kathy.valentine which coincided with my finally finding the right original pressing. Also, hearing only the title track on vinyl on a K-Tel compilation (2nd pic) I’ve owned since ‘83 simply wasn’t cutting it anymore. ‘Vacation’ was the first pop song I truly fell in love with, couldn’t possibly get sick of (still) and is largely the reason that even during my punkest years, I have only really ever been able to write pop songs. Heres a low-res copy of a photo of Mike Bloomfield with a Les Paul Sunburst, a picture taken in 1978 by guitarist and engineer Robb Lawrence. At the time, MB was being interviewed by Lawrence for the The Wizard of Waukesha, a documentary film about the legendary Les Paul (the man, not the guitar). The guitar was not Michaels 59 Standard – that storied instrument was lost in Vancouver in 1974 – but one that belonged to guitarist Robbie Dunbar of the band Earth Quake. Filming took place and MBs friend Norman Dayrons apartment, but this photo was probably taken at Michaels Reed St. home. On the wall are pictures of Dottie, Bloomfields mother, Nick Gravenites and Barry Goldberg, as well as a poster for a WNAP-sponsored gig with Mark Naftalin at the Rivoli in Indianapolis on June 2, 1973. MBs enthusiasm for the guitar is clearly evident from his wide-eyed expression, but he never again played one in performance. Any idea what chord hes playing? With good old Chief Woodenhead from CREEPSHOW 2. The head was sculpted by Ed French @ed.emerson.french and the body, base, hatchet and headdress by Mike Trcic. Alongside the Salty Dog and Ngozi Family, their music, which is one of the hardest elements in the Zamrock scene, has a consistent style from the beginning. When I picked up this record, I was surprised to find out that the font of the letters on the back of the jacket was handwritten font. Somewhere In Time passou a ser o favorito de muitos fãs e é considerado um dos melhores trabalhos da Donzela. . A capa, desenhada por Derek Riggs, traz inúmeros detalhes que remetem à história da banda, como o Pub Ruskin Arms onde eles tocavam no início da carreira, o letreiro luminoso com a hora 23:58 (Two Minutes To Midnight), as pirâmides (tema da capa de Powerslave), o Ícaro em queda (Flight Of Icarus), a morte com o cutelo presente em várias capas, um gato preto, um placar com o West Ham (time preferido de Steve Harris) ganhando do Arsenal, um Eddie a la Blade Runner, o bar Aces High, o restaurante Ancient Mariner, e até o Batman, que nada tem a ver com a banda, mas que está lá entre outros tantos detalhes. . Certamente Giant Steps, lançado em 1960, foi a bofetada despertadora no mundo do jazz e da música em geral. Mas me encanta sempre reouvir esse Blue Train, de 1957, tido por muitos como o primeiro álbum solo de John Coltrane. Gravado com um timaço que tem Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew e a “cozinha” monumental de Paul Chambers e Philly Joe Jones, o disco fluí deliciosamente. O solo de trompete de Lee Morgan em Moment’s Notice mostra que ele poderia ter sido tão grande e influente quanto Miles. Mas Morgan, que tinha apenas 20 anos quando gravou com Trane, tretou demais em várias ocasiões da sua curta vida e acabou morto aos 33 anos pela própria mulher com um tiro no coração numa discussão entre eles no intervalo de uma gig em um clube de Nova York.
