There’s a quote that reads ‘sometimes it takes more courage to ask for help than to stand alone.’ But what if someone has been asking for help for years but is continuously shut down. This was my story and why I passionately campaign for change, through educating my teachers, my friends and family, so that we begin to understand the importance of not only what people are saying, but what they’re not. We must talk about suicide and mental illnesses, educate ourselves and those around us. Knowledge and education will save lives. 🗣Ignorance is not bliss. One person dies every 40 seconds by suicide and there are 24 attempts for every death by suicide. 3 tips for choosing which yarn to use: 1. Who will the recipient be? Is it for you? Will they hand wash their knits with care? If the answer is no, go with one of my superwash merino bases. Easy care, easy wear. If yes, then you have more options! 2. What type of fabric are you looking for? Do you want something with lots of drape, that holds up well at a loose gauge? Or are you looking for something strong and stable for socks? One of my favourites for a light and lofty garment is BFL Fingering (but you totally knew that!) BFL Sport is also a comfy choice for sport-DK weight projects (knit at ~24-20 sts per 4) with good stitch definition and durability over time. 3. Shine or no shine? If you’re looking for that vibrant hit of colour, the only way to get it is to go with a superwash yarn. It’ll have the shiny slickness that you’re looking for, with an upside of being super soft and easy to care for. Non-superwash yarns reflect light, and take on dye differently. MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER: I’m so devastated and sad to announce that today might be the end of Eat Local NZ unless I am able to find some way out of our current situation. Soon after launching on 4 May we were approached by Melbourne based “Mr Yum” to partner with us. They believed in our values and our mission to help NZ small businesses, support Kiwis who’ve lost jobs, lift delivery drivers above minimum wage, and create a new New Zealand. After unsuccessful attempts to unite NZ based tech businesses we were excited to find a business so close to NZ that appeared to share our values. We’ve spent 4 weeks building to an exciting relaunch planned for 8 June but on Saturday (30/5) Mr Yum locked us out of their platform. On Sunday (31/5) they emailed saying they are going to enter NZ without us, and then offered to buy Eat Local for AUD$10,000. They say they feel they’re misaligned with our business values. In my opinion, it seems pretty clear they can make more money without us and social programs like Local Legends; and we have become increasing vulnerable over the past 4 weeks. That vulnerability is my fault - I made the bold (some would say dumb) call to put everything we had into this partnership and rely on our good faith agreement. We stopped any improvements to Shopify (there was a looooong list) and put everything we had into Mr Yum. We spent weeks building tech that would extend and improve their platform, we gave them all of our venue data to migrate, our team spent hundreds of hours setting up venues on the Mr Yum platform and so much more. We announced our partnership to our 800 venues and showcased all the exciting new benefits this partner offer. Quite understandable my team are exhausted and have had enough. There have been a lot of expectations built up about what Eat Local NZ was going to be for so many people. I have a lot of work to do to figure out how to do right by everyone and this may be too much to manage on top of trying to carve a new path for Eat Local NZ. What will I do next? 5 things you may not know about me I see many new faces and I am so happy you are here! I wanted to share 5 things about myself: 1. I am a Registered Dietitian with an “all foods fit” and intuitive eating style approach. I received my Masters degree in Nutrition and Education from Columbia University and completed my dietetic internship and fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. 2. I help women heal their relationships with food and their body image by providing them with the necessary tools and support to break free from yoyo dieting, restriction and binging. 3. My food philosophy has changed and evolved over the years. I initially became interested in nutrition while trying to lose weight. However, like many women who get sucked into diet culture, my eating habits became rather disordered, causing me a lot of stress, anxiety and unhappiness. I have been on all sides of the weight spectrum. I have been overweight and underweight and now I am at a healthy weight for *me* and have the healthiest relationship with food I have ever had. 4. I have always felt at war with my body regardless of my weight and size. I still have my good and bad days but I have learned to appreciate and respect my body and all that it does for me and I help my clients do the same. 5. I have a growth mindset. I recognize and appreciate the fact that I am always learning. Learning to be a better practitioner, colleague, employee, friend, woman, sister, girlfriend, and daughter. I am also no stranger to therapy and I truly believe it has shaped me into the person and the practitioner I am today. In my three month 1:1 virtual coaching program, I help women rebuild trust with their bodies, learn to eat the foods they love without guilt, and become an intuitive eater. But lately I have been pretty grumpy with the state of the world.⠀ ⠀ I dont like seeing genuine asylum seekers being treated like criminals.⠀ I dont like seeing people troll Magda Szubanski after she participated in an ad to help cheer us on during lockdown.⠀ I dont like the fact that 1 woman a week on average is dying due to domestic violence.⠀ I dont like people suggesting that old peoples lives are less valuable than others.⠀ I dont like the fact that the gender pay gap remains at 14% in 2020⠀ I dont like the fact that we still need to be saying Black Lives Matter.⠀ I dont like that the protection of our earth isnt bipartisan. ⠀ ⠀ I could go on, this is what comes to top of mind today. ⠀ ⠀ I am in such a position of privilege that I can choose to not think about many of these things and my life will tick along quite fine.⠀ But its not fine. If others in the community are not fine, there is work to be done.⠀ ⠀ I am smiling but its not fine.⠀ ⠀ So often as women, we keep our anger and opinions to ourselves. ⠀ In a world that favours the rich and the powerful, our voices need to be heard and spread. ⠀ We need to pass the mic to minorities and then listen. I did something crazy yesterday... I started school. 😳 The end goal is to be a NICU nurse. Life experiences- the really hard ones- are crazy things! You can’t plan for them, you never asked for them and you often wouldn’t wish ‘em on anyone. But somehow, those experiences shape us and often for the better. 3 years ago, while I sat in a rocking chair in the NICU with our micropremie for 93 days, I fell in love with the families and babies around me. I also watched nurses who assisted in critical and complicated medical procedures but also had the most incredible people care I’ve ever witnessed. They celebrated with us, cried with us and walked us through our most unsure or even heart breaking days. 3 years later, I can’t shake the desire to be the nurse offering care, hope and comfort to the baby and her mama (family) waiting those longs days in the nicu rocking chair. Sarahs forthcoming novel, The Cult of Romance, is set in Lebanon and will be published by HarperCollins in 2021. Over the next twelve months, Sarah will be running workshops with Sweatshop in schools across Western Sydney, sub-editing our upcoming anthology on the theme of racism, and she will also be working on her new novel, Good Lebanese Girls, which will explore the social and cultural dynamics underpinning the lives of Lebanese women in South-Western Sydney. Im absolutely beyond excited to announce the upcoming Psychedelic Medicine Association! To my doctor friends, you know we werent taught anything about psychedelic medicines in medical school because the research had been halted by their criminalization, but these medicines are BACK and many of them are proving themselves to heal our mental (and physical) health crises like no other therapies out there. Its time we presented our patients with the full range of options to help them heal themselves, and that starts by educating ourselves on whats out there and whats coming. Thats where the Psychedelic Medicine Association comes in. Well send information monthly to members that recaps the latest in psychedelic science findings, well host webinars to help increase understanding, and well provide you with guidelines for how to talk to patients about these medicines in a way that keeps you safe from legal concerns. And this is not just for doctors - PAs, nurse practitioners, therapists, counselors - ANYONE who may be the first person a patient comes to when in need - we want you to join us! There will be a forum in which practitioners can discuss topics with each other, and a second forum in which they can converse with those in the industry who are conducting the research, running the treatment centers, and making the medications. A little throwback to when I first started as a personal trainer. Sophomore year of college I met someone who worked as a trainer for my schools gym. It sounded so bad ass and respectful to have a job like that in college. Thankfully my major taught me everything I needed to know to get certified. Best job I could have asked for in college. It taught me to grow up, get on schedule, conduct myself professionally, and to love what you do! . . The school rec became my home. Training clients, teaching bootcamps, working out, the best part was having a community of everyone who worked and went to the rec. I didnt think I would be a personal trainer after college. I didnt know what I would do. I just told myself I would keep it up until I found something I enjoyed more. . . 6 years later and it hasnt changed. Training is still so much fun and hardly feels like work (besides the days I get up at 5). Ive been fortunate to have great clients who become great friends. . . OUR NEW CLIMATE CHANGE FIGHTING FRIDGES // Stores like ours require a lot of refrigeration and unfortunately refrigerants are responsible for releasing vast quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. When we were setting up our new store in Tory St we wanted to install units with the lowest carbon footprint available on the market. They may look like any other fridges but in fact all our Tory St units are using the latest cutting edge technology in refrigeration. This technology uses R-744 refrigerant which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 1. Commonly used units, such as those we replaced have a GWP of 3922 (swipe right to see a graph of this). We understand we are the first retail store to use this technology in New Zealand! Doing the right thing for our planet never seems to come cheap but were proud that our Governance team never doubted that this was absolutely the right way to go and was willing to fund it.
