While on tour with In The Heights in Tokyo In 2010 I climbed Mt. Fuji with Loraine Faina Oscar Cheda and Daniel Cruz without knowing anything more than it was a big mountain. This was the sun rising above the clouds that September morning. It was also the most mentally and physically exhausted Ive ever been. In this photo I whole heartedly didnt think Id make it to the top of the mountain but after some rest and realizing I couldnt go down the same way I came up, I kept walking. 15min later, I was at the top. When life is really hard, sit down, breathe, see the sun through the clouds and keep walking ahead. We will never be able to go back to the time or place we came from, but we can always move towards achievements that we dont even know are waiting for us. ...and finally... My husband, the mastermind, orchestrated an elaborate scheme for our anniversary this year. Months ago - all unbeknownst to me - he asked our amazingly talented friend @lexx_valdez to construct an art piece for our anniversary present. She graciously agreed & asked for a hi-res photo to start her process. Short on new images, @mikeflossin realized we’d need to take new shots. That’s when he called our brilliant cousin @natasha_coleman up and asked for a photoshoot. 📸 He had her ask me though so I wouldn’t be suspicious 🤔. Mastermind, I tell ya. From everyone’s gifts and efforts, we have this beautiful art piece. As if it weren’t already blessed with Gods purpose from the onset, the artwork was developed before the world lost the resplendent @chadwickboseman to the ravages of cancer. Each element in the art piece is meaningful & draws direct inspiration from the @blackpanther film. The photo (swipe for the original) was chosen out of the hundreds of beautiful images Tasha captured, this one spoke to Lexx most intensely. Michael printed and framed this image for our #bronzeandlinen anniversary. Lexx composed a message that explains every element, which will be forever affixed to the back of this #LEGACY piece. A lot of men in this wonderful world of ours have made some serious mistakes which have allowed the ‘system’ to work against us on many levels. Some just don’t take their responsibility as a man, as a husband or as a father. Thankfully, my Father took me in and made me realize not only are there great men, but this system has our reputation all messed up. I wouldn’t be who I am if it weren’t for my Father. He’s done the unthinkable and what makes it more valuable, is he didn’t have to. Through the tough times between him and my Mother, he still took care of me and love me unconditionally. I was never lost, confused, alone, insecure, Fatherless, or even worried. I have Dad. He taught me valuable lessons about life, family, friendships, love, forgiveness (which I’m still working on), and loyalty, amongst many other things. My Dad, my friend, my Father showed me how to be a man. From the fun games like “Who can hit the softest”, LoL, to learning how to ride a bike in Germany and crashing into the chicken farm, vacations at Sea World, Cruises and learning how to drive, and everything else, I’m very thankful. Many of us have the greatest Dads in the world but he is certainly the greatest Father on this planet. He taught me to fight for my children. Teach my children, love my children, and protect my children. As we can see, the world isn’t always nice, I want my children to be prepared for it all. As he prepared me to be. All my successes have been supported and even guided by you. However, I feel the same way you do. There’s no success greater than being a father. On this day, and every day, Dad, I thank you. It’s with a heavy heart that we tell you about the death of Drive Change Fellow, Shawn Williams. Shawn was shot and killed last week on Tuesday, August 18th in Brooklyn. We are devastated that this young man will not get to live the future he desperately wanted for himself and his kids. We mourn alongside his own family members and pledge to uphold his legacy. Shawn was so smart, so full of life, so wanting of a future that we all deserve: one full of opportunities, support, and peace. We will remember his vibrant smile and the fact that when he entered a room you so felt his presence. Shawn’s energy was magnetic, people were pulled towards him. This tragedy is compounded by the threat of real violence that vulnerable young people are facing. Compounded by COVID-19, systemic racism, and increased unemployment; our society is mixing a toxic cocktail for increased tragedy. Some people will tell you that the rise in gun violence is an indication that we need more police. Do not listen. We need more investment in our young people so that the pull of the streets becomes futile. We need to invest in collective healing. The road ahead is uphill but together we can carry the weight of it. His family is still making arrangements for the funeral and they do need financial support to make it happen. We are asking you to either donate yourself or share the GoFundMe Page that our community member Glenn has created. The first $6,000 will go directly to Shawn’s family. WE EASILY GET OFF TRACK. And it has become extremely difficult to even notice. Growing up I had this fantasy like, super hero vision that I would become some sort of mix between James Bond, Gordon Gekko, Stallone, Eddie Murphy, Michael Jordan, and Usher! Yeeaaaah! I was more discipline about everything between the ages of 9 - 23. Went to school full time, worked full time, and even competed in fitness. What happens along the way? I think I stayed on a pretty decent track. Working out, working hard, long hours, making friends, being a good person, praying when I remembered, etc. But without a doubt the ways of a dominantly mediocre and bad habit world would get in my system. And it would continue to happen off and on, off and on, even until now! We will all get distracted. Slowly pick up bad habits, get seduced into acceptance, and do things that don’t align with our core values. Sometimes those phases can last a while until something in your soul, the universe, or God slaps slaps you a bit. These days the temptation for temporary attention, fun, flash, seduction, and all types of highs are 1000X greater than before. I think the key is to give yourself a little leeway from time to time, and catch yourself a little quicker when you’re too far off track. One of the anchors I use to remind myself to get on track is a question. Who am I becoming? And if I choose to ask it and be honest with myself, it helps me become a super human again. On this day 10 years ago I lost one of the biggest inspirations in my life, and unquestionably one of Hackney’s finest, my uncle Yinka. Our birthdays were on the same day and he was more like the big brother I never had than my uncle. Knowing that so many people looked up to him was probably one of the reasons he didn’t speak up about the challenges and depression he was going through. As men, society expects us to be strong and just get on with it or just ‘man up’ when the going gets tough. To a degree I’m ok with that, but it’s never ok not to speak to your family and friends if you are feeling depressed or having suicidal thoughts. Mental health is of the utmost importance and shouldn’t be brushed under the carpet. No matter how worthless you think you are, trust me, your friends and family love you. Every Storm runs out of rain! I believe you knew what you were doing when you kept me here, thank you....YEEHAW🙏🏽✨ One of the turning points in my life was about 3 months ago when I realized and accepted that I was dying in the hospital. Heart failure, surgery, internal bleeding and I flat lined. I spent a month learning how to walk again. In my mind I was down but I wasn’t out. You see, I don’t walk by sight, so the physical can’t lie to me, I walk by faith. In my mind and spirit I saw myself whole and healed, getting stronger and stronger everyday. Faith is not passive, we have to believe and act as if, while standing in the dark waiting. Life hit me with a mac truck, against all odds, and by grace I am still standing. When my energy got low, I went high, to the most high. Pain, heart attacks, internal bleeding and death means nothing to the one who knows who they are and where they come from. They underestimated me, I am not going anywhere, I am just getting started. Heart failure, heartbreaks, surgery, internal bleeding and death, these challenges made me, they molded and shaped me into the amazing spiritual being I am today. “All things are possible to them that believeth”. When it looks like you are down and out, that there’s no way you can ever come back, get a vision of what you want and only focus on and take the actions that will get you there. Set your intention to the level of the creator’s ability, not your own. We have come too far to stop now, YOU have come way too far to quit!
