STRIKE TEAM 1282A returns home Last night our strike team came home after 14 days at the CZU Lightning Fire. The fire was located in the counties of Santa Cruz and San Mateo and as of yesterday had burned over 86,000 acres. Due to the diligent efforts of over 2000 personnel the fire is 72% contained has stopped its forward progress and was in the mop up stages. This years fire season has started very aggressively and resources are already stretched thin. Your Downey Fire Dept. is prepared and honored to serve as part of the states Master Mutual Aid system. Strike Team 1282A was made up of Engine’s from Downey, Santa Fe Springs, West Covina, La Habra Heights and Torrance. Additionally there are many downed trees from yesterday’s wind storm and park trails are difficult to use at this time. Currently, the City of Portland has not announced any park closures. Oregon is on fire and it was a week without power (or phone service). It’s hard to breathe, my eyes burn, the trails are closed, and I had to cut out of a 7 backpacking trip. It sucks. But, my house is still here and I am going to be ok. It’s easy to get perspective when thinking about and seeing the many small business owners, farms, fire fighters, wildlife, and families right now around here locally and all over the west. Amazing to see people from all walks of life come together to help those in need, left or right, races and backgrounds of all sort. It’s time to shut off your TV and close your computer and get out and help world and you might realize the person opposite of you only wants to make the world better too. With less than 24 hours notice Seattle Humane, it’s volunteers the community were able to gather 1,000’s of supplies to bring over the mountains. People ran to the store to buy brand new items, people came with checks in hand to donate funds and some even said load up their car they will drive over. This is where we need to start to rebuild. Fire. How long have humans controlled fire? Anatomically modern humans ~125,000 years ago. Naturally occurring fires were the source of this spark. As fire became part of human life - food, protection, warmth & light - we sourced out more and more flammable substances to burn in increasingly complex machines. With the advent of the industrial revolution we have advanced the use of fire to start an incredible growth in human population. Humanity is healthier and fiscally sounder with energy. We have all benefited. Yet the use of petroleum and coal has warmed the atmosphere that we all depend upon. In 1824 scientists understood the greenhouse effect of trapping heat. It was named as such in 1901. Atmospheric CO2 now stands at 412.55 ppm (NOAA, Mauna Kea, Hawaii 9 September 2020). This is the one metric that we all need to be aware of. Glaciers are melting and the oceans are more acidic as a result. On land, one of the effects we see is wildland fires. From Australia to North America late summer comes with fire. Parched landscapes ignite. While CO2 levels are intangible, fire is very real. These images from around the West are what we have been experiencing this past month. Climate change is real. We need leaders that address this issue so that future generations can live life on a planet that is habitable and sustaining. Five things to know about the Glass fire in Sonoma and Napa counties. 1.) The blaze has grown to 51,266 acres as of 7 p.m. Wednesday. At least 36 homes in Sonoma County and 107 homes in Napa County were destroyed, and those numbers are expected to increase as damage assessment continues. 2.) It remains 2 % contained. Helicopters were putting out hot spots along the Hwy. 12 corridor. In Napa County, the fire is quickly burning through forested terrain near Mount St. Helena, and additional evacuations were ordered north of Calistoga. 3.) Firefighters have been cutting lines and working to keep the fire away from the path of the Tubbs fire in 2017. 4.) Local fire officials would like to double the number of resources on the fire, but likely cannot because of two dozen other major fires. 5.) Its another Monday morning in Wildfire Season 2020, and another horrible blaze has broken out. Throughout Sunday night, the Glass Fire forced evacuations across Napa and Sonoma counties—in Calistoga, Santa Rosa, Glen Ellen, St. Helena and beyond. This picture was taken by 7x7s Wine Country writer, Jess Lander (@willwrite4forwine), from her home (in Deer Park on Howell Mountain) around 4am just before she was forced to leave. Jess tells us that many homes and wineries, especially along the Silverado Trail, are in the line of fire. The Chron reports that Chateau Boswell Winery and Black Rock Inn have burned, and the beloved Meadowood has also been evacuated. 😢 Meanwhile across Mendocino and Humboldt, the August Complex Fire continues to rage on. With just 45% containment there as of this morning, the lives and livelihoods of the regions many small farmers and cannabis producers also hangs in the balance. 💔 We are asking for updates from you all about whats going on up there and, most importantly, how we can all help right now. Cal Guard aircraft from the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade have been rescuing people trapped by the #CreekFire. These photos are of Cal Guardsmen on the rescue flights Saturday, Sept. 6. Our aviators and crews faced treacherous inflight conditions and displayed sound judgement during the rescue which lasted well in to the night. Homes on the eastern edge of Santa Rosa were under assault early Monday morning and residents had been ordered to flee from the flames of a fast-burning fire that broke out Sunday — the largest in the Bay Area and one of the 25 fires currently burning around California. The Glass Fire swelled to 11,000 acres with zero containment by Monday morning, according to CalFire — more than 8,000 new acres burned overnight. There have not been any injuries or official damage reported, but there were more than 8,500 under threat from the flames, fire officials said, and images from the ground showed numerous structures engulfed in the inferno. Over the weekend, Webster Fire Department sent Jason Myers and Zac Hon to help with the California wildfires. The crew is now staying in North Fork, California, and patroling the Creek Fires north branch. This includes parts of the Sierra National Forest. We are currently working 24-hour shifts on the fire line, and we have 24 hours of downtime, which we use to rest and prepare our equipment for the next shift, Strike Team Leader Jason Myers said. The fire is now over 220,000 acres with 18 percent containment. Dry and windy weather is expected over the next several days, causing additional challenges. Visibility doesn’t mean your always outing yourself. It doesn’t have to be anything more than you taking your space and living your life. Trans people are people. We are every creed, race, gender, sex, sacred belief system, career, passion, and age. There isn’t a philosophy or look or personality that is unique to transgender people. Visibility for me is going to be very different than visibility for someone else. I have my own unique reality and limitations. I decide how and when I can advocate but sometimes the risk is greater than potential reward and I hide in plain site. Surgery and hormones and a 5’6 slight frame give me that ability and privilege. “Passing” makes me feel safe and let’s me focus on building relationships and evaluating risks. Usually it isn’t long before I feel the need due to circumstance or opportunity to advocate and share my journey. It’s just who I am and I’m proud of that. These pictures were taken between Rae Lakes + Forester Pass on Monday as fires raged to the far north + far south of us. No, despite how these look, we weren’t in imminent danger. 7:00 am. 3:30 pm. 7:00 pm. Hiking that day was eery. The birds quit singing. There were a few deer that came out of nowhere to drink from the creek while we filtered water. Everything was so silent - like the world around us was shifting and changing ... and here we were. In the quiet. My emotions were all over the place as I messaged family + friends back home. What’s happening in this world that we have a pandemic + now ... these beautiful forests across the west are in flames? Are we really listening as a whole - in humanity - to this message? December 2019, it was Australia that we watched in horror as their land burned. Koala’s being fed water by humans. And now, it’s us. The question yet again is ... are we listening while standing in the deafening silence? Or are we creating more human noise while pointing fingers as to who’s to blame? What would happen if we all took radical personal responsibility + simply showed up in this world BEING KIND? I wrote in my upcoming book: “In “Indigenous Americans: Spirituality and Ecos,” Jack D. Forbes wrote, “Most or perhaps all Native Americans see the entire universe as being alive—that is, as having movement and an ability to act. Thank you all so much for your thoughts and fervent prayers. An update with factual information. The East side/Palisades of Calistoga (2 miles outside and south east of downtown) erupted into a firestorm in the wee hours of the morning. Firefighting crews, first responders and CDF were on our property at 2:20am. Everything around us was engulfed in flames. See photo facing east - and the tiny red/blue lights of some of the support crew staged at our home and our neighbors home, at the base of this behemoth blaze. The second photo is from the winery camera. Fire fighters took a ‘Stand’ and for the last 12 hours were valiantly trying to save us and our surrounding neighbors. We have lost the Estate Vineyard and our beloved ‘DateNight’ airstream. By the Grace of God and these super heroes, our Winery still stands. We also understand that parts of our home still stand but it has sustained significant fire damage. Most importantly, The Phifer Pavitt family and team are all safe. However, there are SO many still in harms way. The most dramatic way to fight a fire is from the sky. An air tanker may fly about 150 feet off the ground at 161 miles per hour and can paint up to a mile-long line of retardant on the ground. A big helicopter could dump as much as 2,000 gallons of water to try to save a house. And smokejumpers fling themselves from airplanes 3,000 feet above their landing area below to snuff out a small fire in a remote area before it gets bigger. As California battles another wave of historically enormous blazes, the state is using aircraft to combat the huge conflagrations. As of last week, aerial assets in California had dropped 3.35 million gallons of fire retardant and 4.69 million gallons of water to battle fires covering more than 1.25 million acres. California has both its own fleet and can employ contractors to mount full-court presses on fires, but the aerial approach is certainly not limited to combating burns in the Golden State. And the process is more complicated than simply dumping water on flames. Some of you that I’ve met on here know I live in Estacada, OR. Well the Riverside fire came within a mile of home, thankful it didn’t keep moving and was contained by some of our brave local community. Over the years, Vision Los Angeles has raised money for a variety of charities, but we have never asked for donations on behalf of one of our own On Wednesday, our @ninasmidt ‘s hometown was destroyed by the fires in Rogue Valley. Miraculously, Nina and her family were able to evacuate and as of this time, her home is still standing. But, most of her town has been decimated and fires continue to burn and threaten the area. Anyone who knows Nina knows the magnitude of her lion heart and has seen first hand how hard she works not only at Vision Los Angeles, but on herself and being of service to others. MY HOME STATE ON FIRE- Just when I thought 2020 couldn’t get any more challenging, Oregon is experiencing some of the worst wildfires on record. The air quality in the Pacific Northwest was recorded as the worst on the planet over the past 24 hours. Many of the National Forests and outdoor places I spent visiting as a kid have burnt to the ground. Millions of acres have burned. I’m terribly saddened by all of this. Fortunately everyone in my family is safe, but hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated and displaced across the west coast. Thank you to all of the brave first responders and firefighters who are on the frontlines of this fight with nature. Cabrillo College and Red Cross Evacuation Center The County Emergency Operations Center has requested that Cabrillo College provide space as an overnight shelter for individuals who have had to evacuate. FPPO staff are mobilizing today to prepare the gymnasium for Red Cross services and overnight sleeping arrangements, open now. The K Parking Lot will serve as a host for overnight safe parking for RVs and those who want to sleep in their vehicles, also open now.. The M and S Parking Lots will be used by emergency services providers as staging areas for their crews — mostly ambulances. The College is cancelling outdoor events scheduled for this weekend. The Farmers Market will be cancelled this Saturday, along with public safety motorcycle classes. Any other event should be cancelled because of air quality concerns. For the foreseeable future, Cabrillos Director of Facilities and relevant Division Deans and Managers have pre-approved authority to monitor air quality conditions and cancel outdoor activities. Napa Fire Department welcomes home our members who were deployed out of county on Engine 6. The 4 members on E6, along with a strike team leader from Napa Fire, deployed over two weeks ago originally to the Lake Fire in Los Angeles County. After working on the Lake Fire for 4 days, the crew was reassigned emergency need back to their home county and was assigned to the LNU complex here in Napa. E6 spent the remainder of their tour working all over the LNU complex doing structure protection, back burn firing operations, assisting with hose lays, and evacuations and search. Overnight, the #WalbridgeFire grew from 20,000 acres to 21,125 acres and continued its push backing down into the Armstrong Woods grove, Sweetwater Springs and the Mount Jackson area. At the eastern flank of the fire, the Wallace Creek drainage continues to give fire crews difficulty, with the upper Mill Creek, Sweetwater Springs and McCray Ridge areas getting hit hard. I want to give a shout out to my amazing husband and all of the crews (fire and police) working day and night for the life safety of all in Clackamas County and surrounding areas. And of course all of Oregon and the nation right now. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is affected by all of these fires that are still raging, those whom have had to pack up and leave their homes (especially to fire families whose significant other is out on the line while they pack up their kids, animals, belongings!) those who have experienced unimaginable loss. It is heartbreaking. It is also heartwarming to see the community pull together to help each other. Today is hot and the winds are still strong and they are still out there for an indefinite amount of time. I have not heard from Ryan today but know they are safe and exhausted. I am so proud of all of these individuals who have trained and prepared and working together and I pray they all remain safe and find relief soon. I have had many people asking how they can help. The guys who selflessly helped us are now in need of our help. @gatosbros, the brothers who brought their personal fire engine over from their 40-acre farm outside of Morgan Hill to aid #bonnydoon are being strong-armed by Santa Clara County, which aims to seize their property. . The issue goes back to the Loma fire in 2016 when the brothers—with full support and blessing from Cal Fire—cut fire breaks to defend their property. Years later they were red tagged by the county for “illegal grading” and told that if they didn’t “restore” the work they’d done the county would seize their property. Not only would it be extremely costly to “restore,” but it would also be unsafe as the work that was done is imperative to future fire defense, good for the health of the forest itself, and integral to the agricultural use of the land. According to CalFire, this is the first time anyone has been penalized for taking this kind of action during a wildfire. . The bigger issue is that the county is refusing to provide proof that it sent proper notice in regard to these alleged violations and is instead using its size and strength to force them into signing over their property, without giving them the opportunity to even plea their case. . This is a classic case of govt. overreach and an abuse of power. These guys are good Samaritans and good citizens whose entire life work and savings are now in serious jeopardy due to extremely unfair play by the county. . Santa Cruz mountains friends and neighbors, the guys who helped save our homes and ranches are now in need of our help to save their ranch. Please sign the petition linked in my bio. Early this morning, Orange County sent out additional resources for mutual aid assistance up north. A part of this recent deployment, Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue has deployed our Engine 82 as part of Strike Team 1422A with four firefighters to the Lightning Complex Fire in Napa County. Additionally, CMFR’s OES Engine 415 firefighters continue to work the Carmel Fire with four firefighters and are staying in high spirits. Just to give you all perspective on what it’s like to drive through the Willamette Valley growing area RIGHT NOW, these videos were taken between 9:15-10am on my way to Portland from @walterscottwines (sunrise was 6:45am). They show the dramatic shift from the shroud of a Satanic smoke cloud to clear blue skies. . As power finally came on yesterday, I was able to get enough charge on my electric car to make it to the next station this morning; unfortunately through the 5th circle of hell that many winemakers are harvesting in currently. . Feels like the whole state of Arizona is on fire right now with 4 very large fires (30,000 - 180,000 acres) burning in the north, south, east and central part of the state. Then there are two smaller fires (5,000 acres and under) burning in central Arizona, one just north of our house and one that started today which was very close to our house ... so close in fact, that the neighborhood just to the south of us was evacuated and we were able to walk to the edge of our neighborhood for a front row seat to all the action. The fire, which is named the Aquila Fire, started around 4PM this afternoon and has already burned 1000 acres in a heavily populated area. There were at least 20 different planes and helicopters aggressively working this fire, including the huge DC-10 Air Tanker (not the one in the photo). We watched the fire from the start until sunset as it finally looked to be dying out ... hopefully! Here is just one shot we got today. On Monday afternoon, the New England surf community was rocked by Mother Nature. @soundingssurfco shop was struck by lightning as a wicked storm ripped through southern RI. The outpour of support over the last few days has been as humbling as the timeless redwood titans themselves. We’ve received hundreds of messages about memories created in the parks, from a child’s first embrace of a redwood tree’s bark, countless family memories, scout trips, company picnics, blossoming love, weddings, and memorials underneath the ancient canopy. It’s apparent that redwoods have been here for us during the major milestones in our lives, and we are here for them. We are resilient like the redwoods. I live about two miles from the Bobcat Fire and this has been my view from my front yard for the past few days. Everyday feels so surreal. The skies are orange, there’s ash falling from the sky, and did I mention the inside of your home smells like constant smoke. But all in all, so grateful to all the firefighters who are at it all day and night trying to control the flames and protect lives and homes. They deserve all the recognition in the world. Also, some people might not like this but if you have a drone, please do not come and try to get shots. You are making it difficult for firefighters to do their jobs. There are currently 85 large uncontained wildfires burning throughout the west. In our backyard the Bridger Foothills Fire has burned over 8,000 acres and homes of friends and neighbors, coming within several feet of Beringia HQ. SEARS FIRE UPDATE • B825 and crew are still assigned to the Sears fire and have been working hard the last few days. The crew assisted with burn out operations and then transitioned into holding active fire line from jumping a road. Seen here are the KMAX helicopter and a LAT working to put out active fire line and contain spot fires. Crews have been working along side USFS, AZ State Forestry, Hotshot crews, and other fire departments. As of yesterday, the fire was over 14,000 acres and 15% contained. Mnohí ľudia musia opúšťať svoje obydlia, aby sa dostali do bezpečnej zóny. V Colorade zúria lesné požiare už vyšše mesiace, je zasiahnutého už vyše 56 000 hektárov územia. Lesný požiar vznikol aj v štáte Washington, mesto Olympia je zahalené hustým dymom. Aj v štáte Oregon je zaznamenaných veľa požiarov, bolo zničených už viac ako 100 budov a mnohí obyvatelia museli byť evakuovaní. Situácia sa vymyká spod kontroly aj v Kalifornii. Vyše 100 000 hektárov územia zachvátili plamene. Na väčšine územia štátu sa nachádza hustý dymový pás. Z chráneného územia Sierra National Forest muselo byť evakuovaných 150 ľudí. ⠀ 🇪🇸ŠPANIELSKO - Vyše 3000 ľudí v Andalúzií bolo evakuovaných kvôli lesným požiarom. Do boja proti ohňu, ktorý sa vznietil 10. septembra pri meste Almonaster la Real, bolo povolaných až 500 hasičov. ⠀ 🇬🇷GRÉCKO - 9. septembra vznikol požiar, ktorý sa považuje za najväčší zo 70 požiarov, ktoré vznikli v Grécku od 8. septembra. 30. augusta vznikli požiare na polostrove Peloponéz. Požiare ohrozili cenné archeologické pamiatky, ktoré sa nachádzajú v meste Mykény. Našťastie, vďaka práci hasičov, sa všetky exponáty podarilo zachrániť. ⠀ 🇮🇹TALIANSKO - 31. augusta vznikol požiar na ostrove Lipari. Oheň zničil veľké množstvo rastlín, stáročné stromy a úrodu miestnych obyvateľov. ⠀ 🇷🇺RUSKO - 2. septembra došlo k rozľahlým plameňom v Rostovskej oblasti. Ohňom bola zasiahnutá plocha o veľkosti 700 hektárov. Došlo k úmrtiam. ⠀ 📌Oheň je rýchly a dokáže napáchať veľké škody.
