So it begins ... fire season is on and a fire is burning in our community. The #jonesfire has instigated a wide evacuation order. The fire burned around the home of one of our carpenters, yesterday, and some dear clients have a house in the mix of the active fire zone. The Paradise fire is on all our minds and we went to bed last night with our “go bags” ready. Massive gratitude for the firefighters on the line in this steep terrain and working in record temperatures! As we were preparing to welcome everyone back to town around 9 AM, Engine 2310 and Water Tender 2350 responded mutual aid to Zayante Fire for a structure fire that spread to the vegetation. Units arrived on scene and quickly extinguished the fire. In all, the size of the fire was contained to less than an acre in size. This was no doubt a scare to all the folks of Lompico, who just finally came home the day prior. While the Sheriff’s Office initially started evacuations in the area, residents were allowed to almost immediately return home. 2020 is certainly been one heck of a year...and we are ready for 2021! With burning conditions not as severe as seen in nights prior, fire crews have maintained the fire lines of the Walbridge Fire along Sweetwater Springs Road. However, the Stewarts fire will be allowed to burn into the #WalbridgeFire in order for @calfire to better allocate resources across the area, according to CalFire Division Chief Ben Nicholls. Even though the Meyers Fire grew in size overnight to 3,000 acres, Nicholls said it is looking much better. Crews were able to hold the #MeyersFire west of Meyers Grade Road and it is currently south of Fort Ross Road and is in a confined area. SEARS FIRE UPDATE • B825 and crew are still assigned to the Sears fire and have been working hard the last few days. The crew assisted with burn out operations and then transitioned into holding active fire line from jumping a road. Seen here are the KMAX helicopter and a LAT working to put out active fire line and contain spot fires. Crews have been working along side USFS, AZ State Forestry, Hotshot crews, and other fire departments. As of yesterday, the fire was over 14,000 acres and 15% contained. we’re known for our lush forests, pristine rivers, and rainy climate. now we’ve got out of control wildfires and record high winds to add to our ever changing wiki page of Cascadian climate facts. those trees give us that deep inhale of moist pacific northwest air. it’s the air i grew up in, the air i love the most. this past week that air has been filled with the cries and stories of loss. toxic fumes and smoke lay dormant, inverted by highly unusual atmospheric property. flames moved so quickly across the state, many of us hardly had a few hours to evacuate. it’s been a terrifying week, to say the least. nearly a million acres burned, thousands of homes lost, and so many displaced. yet, our communities are strong and resilient. i’ve been so inspired by the generosity of complete strangers, by the outstanding work of fire + rescue, and by the helping hands of folks from different counties and states. this will be a long process to recovery, but it’s one we’ll do together and with your help it can happen soon. we’ve put together a curated list of ways you can assist, both locally and statewide. it’s in the link in my bio, so please take a look and remember anything helps! 🌲 - @nahkobear on Instagram

STRIKE TEAM 1282A returns home Last night our strike team came home after 14 days at the CZU Lightning Fire. The fire was located in the counties of Santa Cruz and San Mateo and as of yesterday had burned over 86,000 acres. Due to the diligent efforts of over 2000 personnel the fire is 72% contained has stopped its forward progress and was in the mop up stages. This years fire season has started very aggressively and resources are already stretched thin. Your Downey Fire Dept. is prepared and honored to serve as part of the states Master Mutual Aid system. Strike Team 1282A was made up of Engine’s from Downey, Santa Fe Springs, West Covina, La Habra Heights and Torrance. I just hiked to 11,000 ft alone in the dark to get a perspective from higher up. Pretty creepy with all the smoke. EXTREME WINDS. This fire has doubled its size in less than 24 hours. It’s unfortunately already done horrific damage. With as much as I support our bad ass fire fighters, please understand there is only so much they can do with fires of this size. I’ve experienced it first hand in the past. Things get out of hand. With that being said, Think ahead. Help the elderly. GET PREPARED! So you don’t panic when/if things get out of hand. One of them is probably working to save your home or the home of someone you know. Its another Monday morning in Wildfire Season 2020, and another horrible blaze has broken out. Throughout Sunday night, the Glass Fire forced evacuations across Napa and Sonoma counties—in Calistoga, Santa Rosa, Glen Ellen, St. Helena and beyond. This picture was taken by 7x7s Wine Country writer, Jess Lander (@willwrite4forwine), from her home (in Deer Park on Howell Mountain) around 4am just before she was forced to leave. Jess tells us that many homes and wineries, especially along the Silverado Trail, are in the line of fire. The Chron reports that Chateau Boswell Winery and Black Rock Inn have burned, and the beloved Meadowood has also been evacuated. 😢 Meanwhile across Mendocino and Humboldt, the August Complex Fire continues to rage on. With just 45% containment there as of this morning, the lives and livelihoods of the regions many small farmers and cannabis producers also hangs in the balance. 💔 We are asking for updates from you all about whats going on up there and, most importantly, how we can all help right now. We are moving our resource guide for wildfire relief efforts to the top of our linktree today and will continue to update it as things develop and tips come in. Day 2b:EVACUATE! Midnight comes along and there is a knock at our door-actually every door at the resort—fire jumped the creek and moving straight towards us in high winds. We were trying to quickly figure out how to get 8 people, 7 bikes and 1 car out of the path of the fire-we we’re preparing to jump on our bikes and figure some sort of shuttle thing-when we found a couple with a pickup that offered to haul the bikes and some people-so we loaded up the car with 5 people/2 bikes and truck with 5 bikes and 3 people(in the back) and took off for Bend. After a bunch of searching we found a hotel with rooms and headed there. Ben, Amy and Danette were frozen after 90 minutes in the cold. We didn’t get much sleep but we are safe and now headed back home. I said it in 2009 at the Station Fire, and now for the Bobcat Fire. The Angeles National Forest will NEVER be the same as we know it. The fire is destroying what has grown back since the Station Fire. Im sure ACH and the forest will be closed for years. IF it rains, stand by for rock and mud slides, maybe a wash out or two also. Whats happening in California and Oregon in the extraordinarily early start to this fire season deserves to be labeled apocalyptic. Supercharged by climate change, the scale has already been historic. And at this point, there is no way to predict how much more loss and trauma from these vicious infernos--smaller outbreaks merging together into larger blazes-- will be suffered. The media has been full of images of these events. Still, its a special challenge for photographers and news organizations to capture images that reflect the otherwordly nature of whats been happening. This photo by Karl Mondon for the San Jose Mercury rises to that level. It was taken last Wednesday near Lake Oroville in Northern California. The effect he captured is called a fire whirl. The way it evokes a sun flare, a Zeus-like lightning bolt, a tornado, or even a missile all speak to the new unfathomable. The “lucky” of us have to deal with the stress of potential taint to our grapes and loss of crop, while those less so are being evacuated and worse losing homes. The outpour of support over the last few days has been as humbling as the timeless redwood titans themselves. We’ve received hundreds of messages about memories created in the parks, from a child’s first embrace of a redwood tree’s bark, countless family memories, scout trips, company picnics, blossoming love, weddings, and memorials underneath the ancient canopy. We think that up to 90 miles of Pacific Crest Trail could have burned this year, and about 1,800 miles of trail were or are closed because of this unprecedented fire season. ⠀ PCTAs very own Eleonore Anderson has switched gears from leading trail maintenance to fighting fires along the trail. Last week, severe fires tore through communities in Southern Oregon across the Rogue watershed. How do fires impact rivers? When water flows over burned structures, it can pick up anything that was exposed in the fire, including lead paint, pesticides, plastics, rubber, solvents, and asbestos. In the short-term, these harmful materials can get washed into local rivers and streams, which can be toxic to humans and fish. Runoff from burned trees and grasses can also carry high levels of nutrients, which can lead to harmful algae blooms. In the long-term, high severity fires that burned trees and shrubs can leave bare soil behind, which can become unstable during rainy weather causing erosion and increased sediments entering waterways. More sediment in our streams can harm fish, pollute drinking water sources, and can smother gravel in streambeds that salmon use for spawning. Additionally, less stable hillsides may increase the likelihood of dangerous mudslides. Overnight, the #WalbridgeFire grew from 20,000 acres to 21,125 acres and continued its push backing down into the Armstrong Woods grove, Sweetwater Springs and the Mount Jackson area. At the eastern flank of the fire, the Wallace Creek drainage continues to give fire crews difficulty, with the upper Mill Creek, Sweetwater Springs and McCray Ridge areas getting hit hard. Fire and smoke are as much a part of the Yosemite ecosystem as water and ice. Every year, thousands of lightning strikes occur within park boundaries, igniting vegetation made tinder-dry by Yosemite’s long, hot summers. More than a century of fire suppression and 40 years of fire ecology have taught park managers that suppressing all fires results in greater severity due to unnatural fuel buildup. Managers must let some fire and smoke occur to reduce the threat of severe fire and restore healthy forests. Confining and containing the Blue Jay Fire, which is natural and burning mostly in Wilderness, will allow this mixed conifer forest to experience benefits like increased habitat and species diversity. I was in NYC when the towers came down, reading Othello in class. It was one of the scariest days of my life. I have endless respect for the 2,977 whose lives were lost. For those missing. For the countless who died from the aftermath of toxic dust inhaled while saving lives. Heartbreak is too small a word. NYC is my home. But I want to say this: Wildfires are no different than two towers collapsing. Our country is obsessed with terrorism. I understand why. But we must start to see wildfires as a weapon too...one of Greed. Of Envy. Of Gluttony. Pride. Wrath. Mans persistant hunger to dethrone Kings....well...that is one explanation for why the towers fell. And so in another form, the same reason is true with climate change. If you cannot see how these fires are a political issue, I beg you- with deep deep love and zero judgement- please be open to understanding the complexity of this. Dont shove it deep into your mind and close the door. Dont dismiss this as natural. Start by asking, what are the emotional reasons we cling to fossil fuels? The #SlaterFire, now the #1 priority wildfire in the U.S., on the southern edge of our town of Takilma last night. Our farm, as of now, is still standing. It’s 1 mile from our farm and the core of Takilma. But our nearby friends at The Meadows, an incredible intentional community, is in grave danger. The fire has reached their land, their water line has apparently burned, and we will be heading there shortly to assist. The fires are burning slowly at night, then moving fast and scary during the day. Things are heating up again. Thank you everyone for your support and love over the last week. Its been a rollercoaster. And not a ride we want to be on. And not a ride thats over. We have gusty SW winds predicted again which aid in smoke reduction, causing increased fire at lower elevations. Ancient Redwood trees and Californias oldest state park have been devastated by the recent wildfires. Spanning some 18,000 acres, the 118 year old state park is the home to the largest growth of redwoods south of San Francisco. And so, I found myself along Highway 236, where due to debris on the road, I had to hike all the way into the park, which was a little over 5 miles. Smoke hung in the air, and the sun made it feel like a weird dystopian future. I came across redwoods that had fallen across the road and were still on fire.
