El Nino has brought unusually warm waters up the California coast this year, and with them tropical species including hammerheads! As someone who would be ecstatic to see one of these beasts while diving, its frustrating to watch kayakers jab at the surfacing sharks with their paddles and post it as a shark attack on youtube. The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Story time! Everyone knows Im crazy about shark teeth. I didnt start hunting for them in the wild until last year... but when I first started diving I volunteered as a diver at the aquarium back home (@newport_aquarium). As a volunteer I helped out with lots of tasks like preparing food, feeding some of the animals, and maintaining their habits (aka cleaning the glass and the gravel lol). Sometimes after we were finished with the tasks that needed to be completed that day, we would get to look for sharks teeth in the big tank (that was obliviously full of sharks lol). At the time, the tank had sandtiger sharks (pictured), sandbar sharks (pictured), shark rays (bowmouth guitarfish), white and blacktip sharks, nurse sharks, zebra sharks and juvy scalloped hammerheads. My collection started out with the bright white teeth from some of these beautiful creatures the aquarium took such great care of. Following Hong Kong’s latest 26 ton shark fin seizure, people are demanding justice. Fins from 80% of the 38,500 sharks killed came from endangered species. The call to action reads “The good news is that this particular crime carries a fine of $10 million and imprisonment for 10 years. We need to demand anyone involved in this horrible act gets that punishment.
