*poke* I love you Cajun! I was paired with Cajun, who is one of four rescued bottlenose dolphins of Gulf World, to be his husbandry primary trainer. Which is basically that I work on and maintain all of his medical behaviors. So naturally I started to build up my relationship with him as there needs to be an incredible amount of trust between animal and human in order for them to trust you enough to voluntarily give blood samples, urine samples, administer eyedrops/medication if needed, etc. Then recently I was paired with him to work in programs as well. Ive never had a dolphin that I clicked so well with in the water before. He reminds me so much of Tlatoani, one of the male dolphins from Cabo Dolphins who I worked very closely with as well. I have already had some of my most rewarding programs with Cajun, as I did with Tlatoani as well. So heres to you Cajun; a rockstar survivor, one of my best dolphin coworkers, and to our many more experiences together as a team teaching people about your story and how we can help dolphins and other marine life just like you. - @livinlargelachinski on Instagram

Presenting the largest fish in our sea, Rhincodon typus or Whale Shark. The latest image from my collaboration with @nathansawaya To see the full image and learn more about some of the worlds most endangered species go to @perniciemcollection 🐋🦈 The Whale Shark can weigh up to 50,000 pounds and grow to be over 30 feet long. It is, however, deceivingly harmless. It survives mainly off of plankton and the occasional small fish. Ironically, they also pose no threats to humans - at times even allowing swimmers to hitch rides on their backs - despite the fatal impact we’ve had on them and their ecosystem. The Whale Shark has been on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species since 2000, when it was categorized as Vulnerable. It’s classification had not been remediated by the time of its second assessment in 2005 and only continued to worsen. In 2016, the Whale Shark became Endangered and research shows their numbers are still declining. Its population in the Indo-Pacific region has been reduced by 63 percent and approximately 30 percent in the Atlantic. Combining the data of both regions shows that the overall population of the Whale Shark has been cut in half. Although a number of commercial fisheries were forced to close from the 1990s-2000s, the Whale Shark’s byproducts have remained valuable and they continue to be hunted illegally. They are especially vulnerable in parts of Asia, like China, where Whale Shark take has actually increased. It has also become susceptible to not just accidental but also intentional bycatch, as they’ve proved to be indicator species for the presence of other fish. It is also certain that a large number of Whale Sharks have succumbed to their injuries from vessel strikes as shipping lanes continue to be placed closer and closer to their feeding sites. Although we know the number is likely high, because these giant creatures usually sink to the bottom after death, it is near impossible to accurately estimate how many are lost each year. Without a more aggressive approach to the conservation efforts of our ocean and its inhabitants, we will likely have lost another beautiful species, the Whale Shark. - @deanwest on Instagram

Sharks often mistake plastics and trash for food and so all that non-food consumption will eventually lead to illnesses and death. 📜Write to Your Legislators. With enough people writing to their representatives, they could introduce legislation that will list sharks as a protected species, banning shark finning and fishing. 👩🏫Talk to Your Community. Encourage schools and teachers to educate their kiddos about conservation efforts. Monster Mako payoff ! There is no better feeling then to stick to a game plan and have it pay off at the 11th hour. Preston Howard @p_totheg_howard and his crew ( Riley and Matt) had faith in me to stick to our game plan for a chance to hook a fish of a lifetime on the fly. This monster rolled up late in the afternoon after waiting for 5 plus hours on a 7 mile drift. This was one of the most aggressive makos I’ve ever tease up. Peston presented the fly perfectly, not once but 3 times! This mako was so big we had a hard time sticking the hook in the corner of her mouth. ( you can see the red popper in the photo) What happened after was insane. This mako charged the boat and ripped the chum bucket off the boat cleat and proceed to swallow the bucket as it drifted away from the boat. She never returned but an hour later Preston hooked a beautiful 100 plus pound mako that jumped and peeled off a couple hundred yards of backing before we released it at the boat. ...... A special day, with great guys and a chance at a monster world class gamefish on the fly!! Repost from @atlantic.owt.collaborative • We don’t just encounter oceanic whitetips during our research expeditions. We’ve tagged tiger, blue, silky and reef sharks. During our time on or in the water we’ve also seen blue marlin, spearfish, mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, beaked whales, dusky sharks, nurse sharks and a whale shark. In 2013 we captured and tagged a juvenile tiger shark out in the deep blue. A few days later we swam with the same tiger in shallow sandy bottom waters. Then we encountered the same shark again, swimming into Hawks Nest Marina. Three encounters in three different environments spanning 17 nautical miles over a period of a few days. I had the opportunity to go on a commercial spearing strike the other day for African Pomona. We see them here in Florida, some healthy schools, but not like this (out of state). There were hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of them. Walls. Schools. As far as you could see. Our buddies are willing run to where most people wouldn’t and they manage that area so well. They don’t do this often, but when they do, I hope I’m the lucky one getting the invite. We were able to provide fresh, whole pompano to local restaurants for the weekend fresh catch menu. I had no prior experience of spearing more than for myself and close friends. But it felt really nice to give locals a chance to enjoy their coastal delicacy, those who do not have the time or ability to go get them themselves. It takes a village. We all have something to contribute. I don’t produce the wine, I don’t grow the vegetables, nor do I make the cheese. But I can spear a fish. I love community. I love the gathering over food and drink. I love my local chefs and restaurants. I’m grateful I get to be a small part of a much greater thing. Episode 4: An extraordinary encounter 🐋 This wasn’t my imagination, again and again it came back to my mind, turned over, and paused in the water, and plainly, they were looking at me. It was an extraordinary minute or so, but it was freaking real, slightly terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Excitement bubbled in my chest, awe filled my body and tears spilled out of my eyes and into my mask. It was a dream come true. One of the most life changing experiences thus far: Swimming with whales. I could free dive down to them, which intensified the vibrations of the songs in my chest. It felt profoundly spiritual, peaceful, and connected. That was huge. Dolphins got in on the action too. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was nowhere better to be. I’m at a loss for words. I’m forever changed after this experience. Seeing sharks swim freely in the ocean creates a true understanding of how much life comes with them. There’s no sign of them “trying to eat everything around them,” in fact they have evolved to clean up the injured and the dead, and to have specific hunting strategies and preferred diets. These 5 fish are swimming with this shark so that when the shark feeds on its prey, the smaller fish will eat the smaller missed pieces, making sure nothing is wasted. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Florida has been the largest export and import of shark fins in the U.S. until now. A humpback whale calf playing up at the surface while its mother to moves it along. These whales make a long journey crossing between islands in the south pacific before eventually going to Antarctica. Watching these animals pass less than arms length away, the mother’s eye relaxed and closed is such a humbling experience. The critically endangered Great Hammerhead holds a special place in my heart. As a child, my first curiosity of the oceans mysteries would be sparked by a magazine article about these unusual looking animals. But it wouldn’t be until almost 30 years later that I would finally have the chance to come face to face with them in Bimini. Diving with great hammerheads is incredible to say the least, but I can’t wait to head back this December to spend some time learning more about them and the many other shark species that call Bimini home from the remarkable humans at @biminisharklab It’s a dream that’s been 30 years in the making! How to reduce the chances of an attack - environmental factors from: @sharkgirlmadison www.surfingguidetosharks.com 🦈 Attack attempts vary with changes in depth, natural light, time of day, time of year, wind direction and other factors, thus increasing the danger. 🦈 Flocks of diving sea birds are a good indicator that there is a bait ball offshore, and it is important to look for this and try to avoid surfing any patch of coast where this feeding action may be happening. Putting yourself into a bait ball is putting yourself into a feed frenzy. 🦈 Rainfalls and river mouths can be dangerous when surfing for a number of reasons. After a rainfall, nutrients run into the ocean and bring up fish and other animals to feed. The visibility of the water after rainfall can greatly decrease, which is ideal for ambush predators like sharks to hunt in. 🦈 Increasingly warm waters around the globe due to climate change can also affect sharks. This has been suggested to have influenced the highest number of shark attacks ever recorded in 2015, due to greater interactions between humans and sharks in the water, as temperature changes allowing sharks to coexist in closer proximity to humans. 🦈 Time is also a significant factor in shark attacks, with dusk and dawn being high danger times due to the position of light. Happy shark awareness day! The 14th of July is a special day dedicated to raising awareness for the plight of sharks around the world. We also celebrate the JAWESOMENESS of these incredible oceanic predators! Did you know that sharks also do their bit to control the threat of global warming? They do more than most as they are biologically charged with keeping prey populations in check. For example, they feed on animals such as sea turtles, who consume huge amounts of sea grass. Sea grass stores large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. But when the turtles population expands at an unsustainable rate, this essential carbon storage is threatened. Sharks, the sea turtles natural predators, are the only ones that can keep this in check. Shark finning is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. According to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, more than 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year for their fins and other products, while more than 50% of the world’s shark fin is traded through Hong Kong alone. Now, a new study by researchers at the Florida International University (FIU) has found that much of the shark fin sold in Hong Kong contained unsafe levels of mercury, exceeding government limits. “The mercury levels are, on average, six to 10 times higher than what is considered a safe level of mercury,” says FIU student marine biologist Laura Garcia Barcia, one of the study’s co-authors. Dwarf Minke Whales has the most complex colour patterns of any baleen whale. The colours are different on each side of the whale and are used as a natural tag to identify individuals. The Minke Whale Project use underwater photographs and video showing both sides of the whales to help them identify individual whales. They also use the help of enthusiastic divers and underwater photographers that donate the photos and get involve in the citizens science program. In celebration of International Whale Shark Day, the UP Marine Biological Society, in cooperation with @lamaveproject is proud to promote whale shark conservation! Whale sharks are an overwhelmingly misunderstood species. Despite being the biggest shark, they feed primarily on microscopic plankton, sieve squid, krill, algae, and small fish. In the wild, the lifespans of whale sharks range between 100 and 150 years. They can also grow up to 20 meters (65 feet) and can weigh up to 20 tons. Known locally as “Butanding” in Tagalog, “Balilan” in Bisaya, “Tuki” in Cebuano, and “Tikitiki” in Waray, whale sharks are commonly observed in certain areas of Cebu, Leyte, Palawan, and Sorsogon, but can also be observed in nearly every tropical ocean-- with 75% of them navigating the waters of the Indo-Pacific region. About 2,000 whale sharks have been identified in the Philippine waters, we are home to the second largest whale shark population on the planet after Mexico. And yet, many of these whale sharks face serious threats. Despite their wide habitat range, long lifespans, and impressive size, whale shark populations have declined 50% in the last 3 generations. In 2016, the species was reclassified as “Endangered” by the IUCN Red List. So what could possibly threaten these bus-sized creatures? The Galapagos is one of the most magical places in the world. Recent news of China excessively fishing in the region has gone almost unnoticed and gathered little attention by the worlds media in a Covid saturated environment. Some of the largest whale sharks in the world frequent the Galapagos and its one of the few places in the world where you can actually witness females so large and so heavily pregnant. In 2018, Lucy had this largest armada of pilot fish I have ever seen around a single white shark. In one photo I have of her from this particular day, I was able to count over 60 pilot fish around her! Despite their name, pilot fish don’t actually “pilot” sharks around, rather the appearance of a shark following a pilot fish is based on the smaller fish mimicking the movements of their larger companions. - @iphotographsharks on Instagram

What is really cool about this super close encounter that @oceanramsey had with #sharkIDNikki is that she never had to use her hands to deter Nikki. It’s responsible for millions of deaths each year. But it’s not the sharks- it’s humans. Sharks are killed at a rate of 70-100 million per year due to the shark fin trade and other factors such as bycatch and longline fishing. This is not a sustainable number. Because sharks are slow to mature, the damage being done is almost irrevocable. Sharks main role is to pick off the dying, sick, weak and injured to prevent disease in the ocean and keep it healthy. The ocean is responsible for over 70% of the air we breathe. Without their mere presence, reefs are dying as they are not present to scare off prey that eat fish which help to clean the reef. This is a small explanation and one example to a grand scale/scheme of things. Of course there are other factors and many other effects we can see in the ocean where sharks are declining drastically. Don’t let fear be a reason to turn a blind eye or keep you from learning and experiencing something new. I am forever grateful for @oceanramsey @juansharks and my @oneoceandiving team for helping me learn every day, for building my confidence in the water and for giving me a platform to use my voice for them. #Tigersharks along with the #GreatWhiteSharks are the subject of so many of the @NatGeo and Discovery @SharkWeek2020. They are beautiful, big, and a bit mysterious, and lets be honest, also fairly easy to film if you can get them to take an interest in the spot you are filming (food). It helps that they like to be in beautiful, mostly tropical locations. Its is interesting to see how this animal has become a new icon in recent years, nearly catching up to the Great White in the number of shows, it seems. And thanks to the Bahamas, there are probably more images of people diving and freediving with tigers now than ever before. I am glad their reputation is getting a complete makeover. Now this is interesting 🤔 a silky shark captured in offshore waters of Pakistan had a belly full of juvenile green turtle parts (check out pic 2)....to my knowledge this is the first evidence of silkies chowing on a sea turtle. I’m surprised this is not something that’s a common occurrence given the pelagic life stage of small sea turtles and that Mahi mahi that silkies often associate with under floating debris, sargassum etc are regular turtle gobblers. It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! Half a million sharks may have to be killed to immunise the entire world with the Covid-19 vaccine, a shark support group has said. Sharks are harvested for a natural oil that is being used in the Covdi-19 vaccine candidates. I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something. I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks? Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash. @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. There are so many shark conservationists doing critical shark saving work - please consider giving them the platform they need to help us help our sharks. I am only 8. Great news! Frances minister of ecological transition has announced that the country will be phasing out cetacean captivity! The countrys three dolphinariums are no longer allowed to breed or acquire more cetaceans. She also said that no new dolphinariums will be built in France and that the country was looking at the idea of a sanctuary for the dolphins and three orcas currently in captivity. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Happy #MarineLifeMonday! Lancetfish (Alepisaurus sp. which means “scaleless lizard”) are large, oceanic fish that reach lengths of more than 2 meters. While widely distributed, little is known about their biology. However, they have large mouths with 2-3 fang-like teeth accompanied by many smaller teeth, which would indicate that they are predatory. Victory! Canada has banned the import and export of shark fins. 🇨🇦👏🏻 Canada is one of the largest shark fin importers outside of Asia, bringing in almost 170,000 kilograms a year. There is an art to chumming for sharks in the ocean. @pelagicsafari is one of the best, and shared great knowledge while showing us how it’s done right: One of the most important aspects for an in-water encounter is to make sure that only fish blood and oil is released into the water, and there is nothing the shark can actually eat or taste. The scent of the fish blood and oil will lure the shark from miles away, but making sure the shark cannot taste anything is essential for keeping the shark calm during an in-water encounter.
