A great white in the blue and subtropical waters of Guadalupe Island, Mexico.  Traveling to these latitudes after a journey of more than 20 hours allows you to observe unique and pristine environments such as Guadalupe Island. White sharks come to this volcanic island according to their sex and age. Adult males arrive during the month of July (beginning of the tourist season); adult females arrive in late September; and juveniles remain in the area throughout the year. One of my favourite images I’ve taken of a great white shark...This juvenile white shark was one of 3 whites and perhaps a dozen tigers feeding on a humpback whale carcass back in 2014. The upper jaw and baleen plates of the whale dwarf the approx 2.8m white shark. Sharks play a vital role in cleaning up the oceans, not only as predators in their own right but by scavenging on whale carcasses which provide an easy, safe high calorie food source. The surest way to see sharks, and lots of them is find a whale carcass with the scent often stretching for miles. Monster Mako payoff ! There is no better feeling then to stick to a game plan and have it pay off at the 11th hour. Preston Howard @p_totheg_howard and his crew ( Riley and Matt) had faith in me to stick to our game plan for a chance to hook a fish of a lifetime on the fly. This monster rolled up late in the afternoon after waiting for 5 plus hours on a 7 mile drift. This was one of the most aggressive makos I’ve ever tease up. Peston presented the fly perfectly, not once but 3 times! This mako was so big we had a hard time sticking the hook in the corner of her mouth. ( you can see the red popper in the photo) What happened after was insane. This mako charged the boat and ripped the chum bucket off the boat cleat and proceed to swallow the bucket as it drifted away from the boat. She never returned but an hour later Preston hooked a beautiful 100 plus pound mako that jumped and peeled off a couple hundred yards of backing before we released it at the boat. ...... During our time on or in the water we’ve also seen blue marlin, spearfish, mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, beaked whales, dusky sharks, nurse sharks and a whale shark. In 2013 we captured and tagged a juvenile tiger shark out in the deep blue. A few days later we swam with the same tiger in shallow sandy bottom waters. Then we encountered the same shark again, swimming into Hawks Nest Marina. Three encounters in three different environments spanning 17 nautical miles over a period of a few days. The Ocean Sunfish, Mola mola (millstone, Latin), Pez Luna (Moonfish, Spanish) 🐟 🐠 🐡 - this huge fish has many names. Sunfish, because you can find it lying in the water surface, on its side, catching some rays. Mola, well some think that the huge, flat shape reminds them of a millstone (it can reach a weight of 2.300 kgs and then its surface is as big as a car!). Moonfish because of the round, pale-grey look of it when seen from the side. It’s #SharkWeek, which gives us a great excuse to share some photos and stories from the CCS archives, and some brand new stuff too! To start us off, a little something from this weekend... The Center for Coastal Studies aerial survey team (Amy and Brigid) had a VERY short flight on Saturday (thanks, low cloud ceiling!), but in the brief time they were in the air they spotted 26 Common #dolphins, a #humpbackwhale, and five #greatwhitesharks! Four of the sharks were swimming about 70 yards (65 meters) offshore at Head of the Meadow beach in North Truro; the fifth was about 1/2 nautical mile off Wellfleet. SHARKS!!! Stop what you are doing right now and give this a read 🙏🏻 Why do I keep painting them and going on about how important and awesome they are?! Apart from them being damn right badass, beautiful, sexy, fierce, intelligent and cute all at the same time... we also need them for our survival. What? How does a shark impact my life you say? Well let’s first start off with the coral reefs, a place that homes a quarter of all marine life and is one of the most biodiversity ecosystems on the planet. To put it into human perspective, coral reefs are like the forests, we need the trees like we need the corals. As apex predators, sharks play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining the species below them in the food chain and serving as an indicator for ocean health. So a reef with no sharks is a very scary place not the other way round. By taking sharks out of the coral reef ecosystem, the larger predatory fish, such as groupers, increase in abundance and feed on the herbivores. With less herbivores, macroalgae expands and coral can no longer compete, shifting the ecosystem to one of algae dominance, affecting the survival of the reef system. And in consequence also our life on this planet. We are all connected! So next time you think of shark, don’t think of fear actually thank them for the air that you breath 💙 So thank you SHARKS! Now this is interesting 🤔 a silky shark captured in offshore waters of Pakistan had a belly full of juvenile green turtle parts (check out pic 2)....to my knowledge this is the first evidence of silkies chowing on a sea turtle. I’m surprised this is not something that’s a common occurrence given the pelagic life stage of small sea turtles and that Mahi mahi that silkies often associate with under floating debris, sargassum etc are regular turtle gobblers. I am still amazed that even today after more than a decade of showing video and photos of peaceful interactions with these beautiful predators that people still think the image is fake or was taken in a cage etc. To be clear, I am not advocating that everyone run out and jump in the water with #greatwhitesharks - that would be foolish especially if you know little to nothing about their behaviour. These images are about another side to these animals, one that is rarely talked about or portrayed in the media - that is the shy, careful and beautiful predator that will gently interact with you from time to time. I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something.     I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks?    Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash.     @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. There are so many shark conservationists doing critical shark saving work - please consider giving them the platform they need to help us help our sharks.     I am only 8. There is an art to chumming for sharks in the ocean. @pelagicsafari is one of the best, and shared great knowledge while showing us how it’s done right: One of the most important aspects for an in-water encounter is to make sure that only fish blood and oil is released into the water, and there is nothing the shark can actually eat or taste. The scent of the fish blood and oil will lure the shark from miles away, but making sure the shark cannot taste anything is essential for keeping the shark calm during an in-water encounter. A basking shark cruises at the surface on a feeding run. 🦈 Which view did you like most? From above or below the surface? 📹 @bertiegregory: This shark was on a mission – filtering up to two million litres of water per hour to take advantage of a summer plankton bloom. Drones have revolutionised both wildlife film and science. Studying basking sharks from the surface is difficult- you don’t see much other than a dorsal fin and a bit of mouth and tail on a flat day. When underwater, you see more of the action but given the poor water visibility, your view doesn’t last long as the shark swims by. From the air however, it’s a different story. Even a simple top down shot like this allows us to analyse the mechanics of their feeding and helps us get a sense of how they move around the plankton blooms. This new technology is also giving us as an insight into the mysterious social lives of basking sharks. We also celebrate the JAWESOMENESS of these incredible oceanic predators! Did you know that sharks also do their bit to control the threat of global warming? They do more than most as they are biologically charged with keeping prey populations in check. For example, they feed on animals such as sea turtles, who consume huge amounts of sea grass. Sea grass stores large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. But when the turtles population expands at an unsustainable rate, this essential carbon storage is threatened. Sharks, the sea turtles natural predators, are the only ones that can keep this in check. We sure picked an amazing week to run four of our famous Extended 8hr Offshore Trips! We had glassy blue water, blue skies, and BLUE WHALES! All of our trips encountered multiple Blue Whales, including cow/calf pairs and some VERY friendly large adults! (see video on our Facebook page!) There has been so much whale activity about 60-70 miles offshore, and while these trips enjoyed the worlds largest animal, there was also reports of Orcas and Sperm Whales in the outer waters! Thats what makes these extended trips so special, you just never know what we might find out there! In 2018, Lucy had this largest armada of pilot fish I have ever seen around a single white shark. In one photo I have of her from this particular day, I was able to count over 60 pilot fish around her! Despite their name, pilot fish don’t actually “pilot” sharks around, rather the appearance of a shark following a pilot fish is based on the smaller fish mimicking the movements of their larger companions. - @iphotographsharks on Instagram

A 360 camera records this tiger sharks movements like never before. Deployed last month during a film shoot for @sharkweek, everything here is custom assembled, meaning many hours were spent each night testing out the ballast and flotation of the bio-logger package before we put it out in this female tiger shark. The entire package comes off the shark after 1 day, leaving nothing - the only kicker: we need to go find the tag. It’s always an adventure - this tag popped 10 miles away in the deep. Fin cams are an incredible way to see how sharks use their environments, but being able to see behind, above, and below the shark is a game changer. The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. The challenges and mentally hard times. 10 months ago I broke my elbow, spent 2 months on disability, only to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime and made the best decision of our lives to be where we are right here in Florida with sharks. Tanner and I spent many nights drinking tea manifesting our future to exactly where we are now. Crazy as some may think I absolutely believe this journey is from our inability to believe we would stay where we were working the jobs we had. Just the time we took to remember we were grateful for what we had for the friends and family we had and where we wanted to be lead us to where we are now. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan.    The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised.   The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Sharks from above. These #blacktipreefsharks are found across the island of #KohTao. A smaller species of #shark they are social animals and often found schooling together. We are fortunate that we are able to get in the water with the adults and #babysharks throughout the year and its an experience that everyone enjoys. We observe most sightings of this sharks during snorkelling as they do not like the noise of the regulator. But hit the right dive site at the right time and you can be lucky enough to find one of these incredible fish.
