As a small business, the most uncertain time is when you first open those doors. You put in months (sometimes years) of work and it all comes down to that opening day. Will anyone even show up? Is this going to work out? Will people like it? Once you get going and you start to experience some sort of consistency and confidence in what youve built, you begin to breathe again. Then COVID19 hit in March and since then, small businesses have been reliving that uncertainty every single day. Every business has been hit with its own unique challenges and have had to change how they do business with no end in sight. It feels like starting from day one over and over again. For us, this has meant switching from walk-in service to exclusively one day advance orders for pickup and local delivery. It would be irresponsible for us to continue business as usual knowing that our business attracts line ups of 50+ people on our busiest days. Preorders are the safest way for us to control the crowds and greatly reduce wait times. As we start to enter the colder months, it is only going to get harder. With this in mind, please be patient with your local small businesses and respect how they have chosen to safely operate during these weird times. Support them when possible (this could be as simple as a like, comment, share, or save on social media) and keep them in mind as the holiday seasons approach! We will never forget the love and support we have felt from all of you since the day we opened. Seeing photos of the lineup around the corner on our first week open is still surreal almost 6 years later. In the coming months, lets continue to show the same love to all of the small businesses in our community in hopes that when this is all over, they can breathe again. As we build a record label in Newcastle for the people of Newcastle with local Novocastrian artists we like to think we are in good company. Newcastle has a long and rich history when it comes to music, who remembers The Palais? - The venue opened in 1929 and quickly become a destination for a great night out for all. The Palais’ arrival in Newcastle was a sign of the city growing up, becoming a beacon for those wanting to socialise and enjoy live music. There were jazz bands, dance bands, and people from all walks of life. Inside, there was an ornate ceiling held up by intricately carved columns. It was truly a masterpiece. - The venue hosted some of the biggest names in music including one memorable night when Crowded House forgot the song they were playing, in the process cracking themselves up – the crowd laughed too and the band simply started the song again. Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. Bush, and travelers and locals alike stroll in to savor their sugary (and sugar-free) delights. Open Mon-Sat. SRA were built in 1953, over the years everyone from Irene Marie Modeling Agency to Johnny Rockets ended up in this space. When it was finally sold and redone about five years ago, they kept the facade while demoing and rebuilding the rest into CVS. This photograph of Supreme Cleaners, 1012 Center Street, was taken on September 25, 1948. Supreme Cleaners was affiliated with Superior Service Laundry at 2011 South Tacoma Way as both were owned/operated by the same individuals: F.J. Meyer, president and W.C. Miller, vice president. Supreme Cleaners opened in April of 1934 in this large concrete plant. A billboard on one side of the two-story structure emphasized the care Supreme Cleaners would show to fur garments including storage, restyling, cleaning and repairing. Superior Linen Services is still located at this address today, the family-run business having been in operation since 1926. Jon Corbo and Matt Watson met in kindergarten at Glenville School and became fast friends. After graduating Greenwich High School together, they became familiar faces over the course of 18 years working in retail food service in town. Along the way they both married and have young kids of their own. Recently, Corbo and Watson opened Grigg Street Pizza, a stone’s throw from Greenwich Avenue, and when they’re not stretching and twirling pizza dough, they’re fussing over their “mother” in a glass jar. The “mother yeast,” that is. A whiff of the bubbling yeast is appealing, triggering fond memories of baking from scratch. “It’s better for you,” Watson said. “Our pizza has no commercial yeast. This photograph from the @tacomalibrary collection has given me the excuse to reach outside Tacomas borders and share a story from Puyallup. This photograph primarily focuses on the building at the corner of South Meridian and East Pioneer, as it appeared on September 29, 1927. It was home to Hoods Hardware, the Citizens State Bank and the Puyallup City Hall. Directly adjacent to that building, at far right, is the Puyallup Opera House, with its distinctive onion dome. Built in 1890 for $20,000, it was described as “the finest and costliest theatre building in the state outside of Tacoma and Spokane. It was demolished after being damaged by the 1949 earthquake. Pictured in this post: 1) This 1896 image faces north on Avenue D. The large two-story building with five windows above housed Willis Myers’ Lobby Pool and Billiard Parlor on its first floor. The second floor was the location of the incorporation meeting that brought the City of Miami into existence. 2) The grounds of Ft. Dallas, Julia Tuttle’s homestead, shortly before Flagler’s first visit. This image looks east towards the mouth of the Miami River and bay. The Brickells’ trading post is visible top right, across the river. 3) Makeshift huts in the woods near Tuttles property that were hastily constructed by 95ers who rushed into Miami after it was announced that a new Flagler town would be built at Miami. 4) This 1895 image depicts an “early view of 1st Street.” This may be either today’s S. 1st Street, in downtown, or N. 1st Street, two blocks farther north, or it may be the original “1st Street,” today known as N. 11th Street - the northern extremity of the planned city. 5) A family outside their home in 1896. 6) Early street scene on North Miami Avenue in 1896. 7) A view looking north on Avenue D, todays Miami Avenue, in 1896. 8) Group of people gathered on East Flagler Street at 1st Avenue in 1896. This was known as 12th Street at the time. 9) Groundbreaking ceremony for the Royal Palm Hotel at the north bank of the mouth of the Miami River. Originally a small grocery store called Johnson Grocery, this Red and White Chain store played an influential role in the Minneapolis business district. In the early 1900s, it offered wholesale pricing to local buyers so they were able to operate as a small grocer while competing with larger grocery chains on price. The longest operating theater west of the Mississippi is a 222 seat single screen theater on the corner of SE Clinton St and SE 26th in Portland. Opened in 1915, it has seen many changes in both the world and itself. But uncertain times bring an uncertain future. … In her most recent e-newsletter to supporters, owner Lani Jo presented the sad, tough facts about running a business right now, and it’s a somber but important read. @cst_pdx is an intimate theater, and even as counties open back up in phases, Lani Jo admits that socially distancing will be next to impossible in the small space. She puts it simply: “The sad fact is that I simply dont have the financial or emotional wherewithal to weather this storm.” … The theater is currently accepting donations on their website, although Lani Jo admits she is accepting the funds with a heavy heart, not knowing if and when they will be able to re-open. There are also alternatives: “So, what am I doing now to stay afloat? We still have Virtual Cinema, and purchasing your ticket through a designated URL will provide some funds to the theater. We still have our Square Gift Cards.” Now, on Fridays and Saturdays they sell beer to be consumed off-premise, along with popcorn and candy. … Historical theaters like Clinton Street are understated and important to our industry. In today’s ‘Throwback Thursday’ we’re highlighting ‘Stanley’s Variety’ at the corner of Gerrard St. and Ontario St., originally built in 1875. It was once a Dominion Store, which was a chain of shops that many years later became part of Metro. This picture was taken in 1926. Unfortunately this historic building was recently tagged with a lot of graffiti. That is, until, some passionate volunteers from Cabbagetown South took it upon themselves to remove it this week! Fifty-one years ago this week, the first young patients entered the new @mottchildren Hospital, continuing our tradition of providing dedicated facilities for the care of young patients that dates back to the early 1900s. The first image, an aerial taken during the last stages of construction in 1968, shows the new hospital (with the vertical columns) at center. Womens Hospital and the flat-roofed Towsley Center are in the foreground, and the Old Main Hospital and Outpatient Building (which we now call Med Inn) are behind, with the Medical School beyond. The site where todays Mott Hospital and Von Voigtlander Womens Hospital stand is in the very foreground. From the 1940s to the mid-1990s, it was the site of University Terrace, a collection of apartments for older students. The second image, taken by the Ann Arbor News during the Open House that preceded the hospitals opening, shows the groovy 60s decor of a waiting room. The story about the open house (available from @aadlgram at https://aadl.org/node/87013 ) called it this most modern of childrens hospitals and noted the $6.5 million gift from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and many other gifts that made the hospitals construction possible. The third image shows the hospitals front entrance around the time of the opening, with a circle drive for patient families. This entrance now faces our hospital courtyard, as the first Mott building serves adult patients as our UH South building. It’s #FargoHistoryFriday! #FargoHistoryPost: Silver Tray Cafe Abraham Solow opened the Silver Tray Cafe at its first location, 14th 8th St. around 1933. Fast forward 2 years to 1935 and the Silver Tray moved to 604 Front Street which is the current home to @babbscoffeehouse! The Silver Tray moved a third time to NP between 1939 and 1940. The final move happened in 1947 to 408 Broadway along with a name change to the Silver Tray Tavern around 1954. Louis Hoffman purchased the cafe from Solow and closed in 1976.
