This photograph of Supreme Cleaners, 1012 Center Street, was taken on September 25, 1948. Supreme Cleaners was affiliated with Superior Service Laundry at 2011 South Tacoma Way as both were owned/operated by the same individuals: F.J. Meyer, president and W.C. Miller, vice president. Supreme Cleaners opened in April of 1934 in this large concrete plant. A billboard on one side of the two-story structure emphasized the care Supreme Cleaners would show to fur garments including storage, restyling, cleaning and repairing. Superior Linen Services is still located at this address today, the family-run business having been in operation since 1926. As we watch fellow small-business owners close up their shops, restaurants, and other establishments, we’re seeing a look of terror about what the future holds for them, their businesses, and their employees.  Our city, nation, and world are in crisis. Going out to restaurants, buying a new pair of shoes, or attending a concert is not only impossible, it’s the last thing on all our minds. But the problem is this: many of your favorite small businesses – the ones you patronize and support daily, won’t be able to survive this complete stoppage for long. If we all put on the brakes, many of these establishments simply won’t be there to re-open their doors when the time comes.  So what can we all do?  Support the small businesses you love in any way you can. Order take-out from your favorite restaurant. Buy a gift certificate from your hairdresser. Order some records from your favorite band. Shop online from your favorite store. These things might seem like they can wait, they might even seem crass at a time like this. But in fact, they are incredibly important acts of support that we should all be considering NOW. Because seriously, a few weeks from now might be too late.  Over these coming weeks, we’ll be doing our part to support our favorite local businesses, while doing everything in our power to protect the jobs of our own team of three employees. And, we’ll ask that you consider supporting Brooklyn Tailors in kind. We realize its not the first thing on your mind, and that many of you will be worried about your own jobs and livelihoods.
