I woke up this morning and became informed of the real meaning behind the sentiment of my previous post and the womens empowerment challenge thats currently taking place. . In my ignorance, I spent 3hrs researching Pinar Gültekin, femicide, womens violence worldwide, the Istanbul Convention, GREVIO, the countries who ratified the convention and those who have withdrawn from it and why. I felt inspired to compile some of the information here. . World Health Organisation (WHO) and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) have developed a series of information sheets on violence against women (VAW). It summarizes what is known about the prevalence, patterns, consequences, risk factors and strategies to address the different forms of it. The sheets are designed for practitioners, researchers and policy-makers, but I encourage you all to explore them. . Something that stuck with me was that VAW comprises a wide range of acts – from verbal harrasment and other forms of emotional abuse, to daily physical or sexual abuse. At the far end of the spectrum is femicide: the murder of a woman. Collecting correct data on femicide is challenging, largely because in most countries, police and medical data-collection systems that document cases of homicide often do not have the necessary information or do not report the victim–perpetrator relationship or the motives for the homicide, let alone gender-related motivations for murder. . This highlighted to me the significance of intersectionality in dismantling the patriarchy. There is so much to be done but having some initial thoughts is a good start. . The information sheets can be found at: https://www.who.int/reproductivehealth/topics/violence/vaw_series/en . If you are a man reading this, please take a moment to reflect on instances where you have verbally/emotionally harrassed a woman - e.g. on the street, in a relationship or in a club. This soft abuse is often seen to be inconsequential but it says a lot about how you see yourself in proximity to women. DIA INTERNACIONAL DA LIMPEZA COSTEIRA CELEBRADO COM AÇÃO NA PRAIA DA TORREIRA O Dia Internacional da Limpeza Costeira, que se celebrou em 2020, de 19 a 27 de setembro, com iniciativas de limpeza terrestres, um pouco por todo o mundo, foi marcado, no concelho da Murtosa, com uma ação na Praia da Torreira que decorreu no passado sábado, dia 26, e que contou com mais de 50 participantes, entre os quais se incluiu a Vereadora do Ambiente da Câmara Municipal da Murtosa, Fátima Arêde. A meritória iniciativa que sensibilizou para a importância da preservação dos oceanos e dos ecossistemas costeiros foi organizada localmente, em parceria, por Marias do Mar, Torreira Praia Limpa, Salváqua – Associação de Salvamento Aquático e Assistência a Banhistas e Município da Murtosa. A limpeza cifrou-se na recolha de mais de 300kg de resíduos, na maioria plástico. The surf community in Falmouth, Cornwall, is bringing our passion and our voices together in solidarity against the existing regime of structural racism. We’re raising funds for @blackgirlssurf in support of unity. . It is important to recognise that people are often grouped or structured into social categories (Cloke et al., 1999: 12). Their lives can be enhanced NOT BY HOW HARD THEY WORK, but simply because they are assigned to one group rather than the other. . These processes of categorisation do not occur ‘naturally’. They are the product of how power and resources - which may be real (money, cars, homes) or symbolic (a question of how people live and what they take for granted) - are struggled over and MANIPULATED. . Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups are statistically over-represented in low income homes and neighbourhoods. ENTRAPMENT in spaces of deprivation can prevent already disadvantaged groups from being able to take advantage of opportunities. . In Britain, the organisation of space contributes to a process of systemic racism, where social categories and the inequalities that divide them seem normal and unequivocal. .
