We all know the impact of fireworks: loud noise makes animals super scared and some even die of heart attacks, micro particals of chemicals flying through the airand polluting the ground, and also people are getting hurt. Welcome to Fall! Happy Equinox. Equal day & night, light & dark. This photo is from nearly a year ago when I was just discovering the magic of #KatonahYoga @thelookingglassbasel 💗 Little did I know how much our world would change from then to now. Progress sometimes feels like one step forward, two steps back. We’ve all been dealt a few hard blows in the last couple seasons. Some more than others, showing how the equality of this seasonal mark is just cosmic and not (yet) fully reflected in the workings of our society nor in the individualist culture. Great Nature is so inspiring as she reminds us to never quit tuning our frequencies, though. I’ve found myself seriously turning away from personal use of this platform, apart from my business... I am turning in and it fits with the season. I’m concerned with the disturbing unfolding of many things in the social media sphere & beyond, so let me just write here now that I am definitely voting BIDEN/HARRIS 2020; it’s strategic and in alignment with my heart & core values. I hope you vote, too. For my mental sanity and to be more effective at my life purpose, I will be plugging some of my energy leaks and practicing what I preach—embodiment. 🌀Time to get offline (!!!) and into the current of life. 🔥Growth Moment🔥 This picture represents both physical and personal growth. Physical: My one arm lock off strength improving as a result of my limited strength training protocol over the course of this year. Some areas have dropped off with a lack of attention, but for the most part Im getting stronger overall and it felt easy to hover on one arm while talking to the group 💪😎 Personal: It took me about a year before I started teaching regular classes, and almost 5 years before my first solo workshop on the weekend. It was a great turnout, and Im proud of the growth in self-belief it took to teach it 🔥 This is often the harder work that nobody sees. You dont get likes on social media for internal work, but it is the real work that unlocks everything else 🔑 Growth is rarely linear. In my experience, there are so many opportunities to quit or lose faith in the process, but the rewards are there for those that stick it out 🙏 So please, dont lose faith. Keep growing, keep believing, and see just how far you can take things. For me, theres a big green Mountain I have to climb 😉🔥🔥🔥 P.S. I would say that 99.9% of all my back pain clients have weakness in their core muscles and lack the appropriate spinal stability to maintain their normal level of activity. If you are trying to squat heavy, deadlift, or even pick up your kid off the floor you need strong spinal stability and you get that from having a strong core! BIGGEST FACTORS IN FINGER STRENGTH! 💪🔥💪 Most climbers are pretty obsessed about finger strength. We also know it has a big impact on climbing, whether bouldering, sport climbing or trad climbing. In addition, we all very aware that it’s not always easy to make progress consistently over the years! Many of the clients we work with find that a couple of years of finger strength gains come quickly as they either boulder more or they take their steps in training it systematically. As we’ve assessed and worked with so many climbers of all walks of life over the years, we’ve really come to see some strong patterns associated with either excessively strong fingers or excessively weak ones! Lets have a look at some of the BIG areas that affect the extremes of physiology. Before you drive in, please remember were talking about real outliers of strength here! These observations are based around the far end of the scale either end and the most important thing in this case is to reflect on whether you think your own situation may mirror any of the scenarios below.... could it impact choices going forward? 🌪Too much going on in your life This one can be termed as allostatic load. We see this issue every single week!! Its in our DMs, on social media comments and in emails from inquiring climbers. Do NOT expect to jam your life with stress, lack of sleep, a 24-7 lifestyle and partying and be really strong. It doesnt work. 🥘 Eat well – High Energy Availability One pattern we have observed over the years is that climbers who spend long periods of time in calorie deficit, with very low body fat percentages really struggle to make significant, lasting strength gains. Those climbers are not coming through the long-term with excessively strong fingers or upper bodies. Yes, they can create the effect of high strength-to-weight (STW) by moderating body composition, but in the long run, it’s setting up any athlete for sub-optimal gains in strength. Water bottles, towels, equipment out of place, and even flip flops in here, as you can see in pictures. 2020 over and out. ✌️ Its certainly been a different experience racing in 2020, but really grateful to have had another opportunity in Doha with this lovely bunch! 🤗 Still a little way off my best of 8.31 - but a far, far better performance than my last! Stupidly rolled my ankle during my first run here, 🤦🏼‍♀️ so ended up racing in my flats (which was a first 🤣) Grateful to finish the season in one piece, ready for a big winter ahead! For most meets, we have to arrange a covid test before we travel and then follow it up with another once we arrive. Face masks are mandatory, hand gel is everywhere and we all get single rooms! Which is actually a bit of a blessing as normally we have to share. Sometimes its cool... but sometimes you share with someone youve never met which can be a bit odd... even more so when you have a completely different routine or speak different languages! I have some brilliant stories - maybe Ill write a book one day! 😂🤔 But, its great to see these meets being creative to ensure the safety of all the athletes. The smaller Planche progressions are often overlooked I see people all the time trying to take too big a leap in the complexity of the movement and in a rush instead of laying a solid foundation of strength. In my experience those that Pay attention to the progressions in between progressions often progress the fastest. Here are a couple of progressions often overlooked. 1. Scapular push ups. To be fair I do see a large amount of people working on this but mainly as a warm up. Have you tried to do more than a set of 10? 2. Band assisted scap push up. Add some resistance build some strength aim for 15 reps with a 3 sec pause in the protraction part of the rep 3. Planche slides. Maintain the lean forward. Straight arms no elbow bend and don’t allow the hips to move up and down 4. Planche slide lifting the feet. To begin with aim to pull the feet off for 1-3seconds. THREAD IT THROUGH! Another TRUE STORY and link up to yesterday’s post! I was re-setting my rope length on my reformer by grabbing both loops and this is what came out of it. I’m playing again in that pretzel position (switched legs from the post a week or so ago called LEVEL UP UNILATERAL) and I’m on 1 BLUE 🌀. Again it’s just me having a little fun and moving on my reformer. 1️⃣ “Thread it through” 2️⃣ “Thread it and extend it + tricep” On number 2️⃣ it feels great to add a bit of extension with the spring load coming from behind. I mention b/c you likely can’t see much of that in the clip on my body. Try linking all 5 of these moves from yesterday’s post and today & don’t forget to do the other side. One year ago, when I started my calisthenics journey, I could barely do one push-up and I wasn’t even remotely close to do a single pull-up. Yes I was pretty bad and I had zero confidence in myself 🙈 I decided to join @movementco after fully recovering from an open heart surgery. After months of feeling sick and getting treated like an old person, I wanted to take my life back and become strong and healthy. It hasn’t been easy though. I thought many times about quitting, because everyone else was better than me and I couldn’t even do basic exercises. I never gave up. I slowly started to get stronger, to nail my first pull-up and I begun to feel more confident. I was that confident that I attempted my first muscle-up in June. I failed, but I was still proud of myself because at least I had tried. Two months later I tried again. Yes I was shaking and it is painful to watch 😆 But I was super happy because I had gotten my first “shaky” muscle-up! And finally last week I nailed my first decent muscle-up 🙌🙌🙌 When I started my journey, I never thought I could have gone so far. Recovery: Sleep ••• Sleep is undoubtedly the foundation and holy grail of recovery. Unfortunately, athletes face a number of obstacles preventing them from getting optimal sleep. Vigorous training schedules, academic obligations, pressure to perform, and social stress can all impair sleep, sequentially reducing recovery & adaptation, and thus, performance. Optimal sleep is a prerequisite for optimal performance! ••• Performance — Accrued sleep debt negatively impacts reaction time, muscular endurance, fine motor skills, and neurocognitive function, cumulatively reducing vital sport skills like digging a volleyball or delivering a pitch. Its speculated that lack of sleep increases heart rate & oxygen consumption, while raising lactate levels. A rise in cortisol and suppression of growth hormone also follow sleep loss. ••• Injury — Inadequate sleep duration reduces immunity, increasing the likelihood of getting sick. Research also shows that youre much more likely to get injured with inadequate sleep, and youre at an even greater risk if practice/training load increases simultaneously. This is perhaps related to the reduction in physiological function. He’s been taking my Reformer classes AND trains privately with me. He’s extremely active. In addition to Pilates, he hikes, bikes, runs, and does Personal Training.
