I talked to Aria, an LAUD teaching assistant, who was handing out homemade PB&J sandwiches among other snacks. She said, “I see my students harassed by police on and off campus all the time.” She protests for them. I talked to Rylie, who was saging the street, and she said, “I’m an unmistakable Black woman. Loving how I look, who I am, is why I’m out here today.” She protests for herself, for her brother, “for all Black people everywhere who are children of God.” I talked to Ramona who had a lovely story but didn’t want to show her face. To Rosatzin who came out as “a Native person in support of Black lives.” And others who drummed and led chants, dance groups dancing on top of a Hummer to old school rock and pink-painted poodles who bite racists. The George Floyd Protest in Oakland tonight was small in terms of protesters compared to Occupy and Oscar Grant but big in property damage; mainly corporate stores but a fair number of mom and pop establishments also got thrashed. Most fires were in the center of the street and mainly trash where they could have easily been all this new construction in downtown. The crowd was a mix of locals and distinctly not locals. In Oakland it’s always eye opening how many of the people arrested aren’t from here at events like this. To encourage folks to comply with public health guidelines — while highlighting the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on people of color — through public art.⠀ ⠀ The posters have aleady appeared in New York, Atlanta, Savannah, Miami, Nashville, Dallas and Chicago. The state will become the first in the country to infuse climate change into the curriculum at every grade level, officials said. The mandate takes effect with the 2021-22 school year. Parliament in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en who anticipate violent removal in advance of Tuesday’s throne speech.
