Falcone non ci permetteva mai di fotografarlo in posa, dovevamo approfittare delle occasioni pubbliche. Era una persona molto gentile ma, poiché veniva accusato di protagonismo, e non era vero, non si concedeva ai fotografi. Lo fotografai diverse volte ma mai bene come avrei voluto. Quando ammazzarono il Generale Dalla Chiesa, lui era lì davanti ai militari, gli feci quattro o cinque scatti. A member of the Swiss Guard paces at his post near the foot of Scala Regia, the royal staircase that connects the Apostolic Palace to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Once a formidable mercenary force dating back 500 years, the title Swiss Guard now usually refers to the Pontifical Swiss Guard, a small force of just over 100 Swiss Catholics who serve as bodyguards to the Pope. Despite their outwardly appearance of a ceremonial role, they are a serious and well-trained combat force, equipped with modern weaponry such as submachine guns. Quando pensávamos no futuro, imaginávamos que no segundo milênio estaríamos viajando para outros planetas, voando de carro e imunes a qualquer doença. Como poderíamos sonhar que em 2020 a realidade seria completamente diferente e que o Brasil seria o epicentro de uma pandemia? Apesar de ter sido decretada a quarentena para conter o contágio pelo corona vírus, muita gente está nas ruas e sem proteção adequada. O grande abismo social que assombra o Brasil e as condições precárias de moradia que ele provoca faz com que a circulação de pessoas seja inevitável. Há também aqueles que poderiam respeitar o isolamento social, mas não abrem mão dos seus hábitos e prazeres ao ar livre. Em um país onde as autoridades burlam regras ao invés de dar o exemplo à população, onde governantes fazem interferências em benefício próprio e onde a impunidade é característica marcante, por que o brasileiro vai se trancar? Vivemos duas crises importantes e preocupantes sem prazo pra terminar, a de saúde e a política. Como fotógrafa que atua na capital paulista, sempre presente em aglomerações e eventos de grande público, quis registrar o fluxo atual da cidade, - e para isso mantive o distanciamento. Desta forma, me incluo como parte da obra e, percebo que, ao fotografar de dentro do carro, meu olhar também foi modificado por estar limitado a um espaço pequeno, fechado e em movimento, interferindo diretamente no resultado. O projeto pretende investigar a forma e os motivos que resultam na circulação das pessoas , traduzindo os números inalcançados de isolamento social de forma imagética pelo cotidiano do paulistano durante a quarentena. The Royal Bank, corner of Elizabeth and Collins Streets, Melbourne, Australia, c. 1929. Prior to the ANZ, three other banks have traded from the southeast corner of the intersection of Collins and Elizabeth Streets. Partially visible in this photograph of c. 1929, is the earlier bank building on this site. It was designed by Terry & Oakden, and built for the City of Melbourne Bank in 1886. By 1903 another bank, the Royal Bank of Australia traded from these premises. The existing building on this corner, built by the ES&A Bank in 1939-40, retained the title of Royal Bank in the name of its branch here (as has the ANZ). Visible to the right of the Royal Bank is the Australian Building in Elizabeth Street. The Australian Building was, at the time of its completion in 1889-90, one of the tallest commercial buildings in the world. Also visible is the Brooks Robinson building completed in 1910. Brooks Robinson were merchants in building products including glazing, paints and oils; and the building served as showrooms for the products they sold. Their handsome Edwardian building, designed by the architects Inskip & Kemp, is extant. As a group, the Royal Bank, the Australian and the Brooks Robinson buildings, formed a fine collection of late-Victorian and Edwardian commercial architecture in this part of the city. Graffiti on a wall near the Jafrabad metro station. Many survivors of the Delhi violence told Shahid Tantray (@shahidtantray) that the Delhi police has refused to lodge first-information reports, even in cases when the survivors have identified their assailants. “In February, a young man named Faizan was pictured in a video, lying almost unconscious, while the police beat him and four others and forced them to sing the national anthem, while taunting them to ask for azadi. He died in a hospital soon after he was released from police custody, late on 25 February,” Tantray writes in his photo essay on the Delhi violence. “‘The police hit my child with sticks,’ his mother, Kismatoon, told me. Our streets smell like piss. Ive debated for several days about posting this photo of a man who has passed out while urinating on himself. I usually refrain from photos of street people. They are defenseless to the camera, and the act of photographing them can seem exploitative and even aggressive. However, in any American city, street people are ubiquitous and unavoidable. When Im ambling along, I speak to as many as possible and I share what I can. I regularly carry a wad of dollars in my pocket. But I never “pay for a photograph” and if I do take pictures I always attempt to ask permission and share the subject’s story respectfully. Ive also decided not to identify the location for this photo because its a scene that I believe could be replicated in any American city in 2020. Ive been in similar places the past few months and it is common to see growing numbers of the homeless and downtrodden encamped in parks and doorways, peeing wherever they can, while the sidewalks are empty of normal economic activity. Its uncomfortable and disconcerting. I dont recognize these downtown places any more. Dont pretend this has all come up suddenly. Under the Department of Defenses 1033 program, since 1997 the US military has provided over 7 billion dollars worth of armored vehicles, weapons, and aircraft to 8200 police departments nationwide. It is just one of many federal programs through which local police departments receive or purchase excess military equipment. There is no substantial data that proves that these expenditures reduce crime. Instead, there is overwhelming evidence that these tools lead to the increased use of force against civilians. They are a stimulus package for racism and oppression, sucking up resources and personnel that could be used to help the disadvantaged. I should note I took this photo the day it was widely reported Jeff Bezos added a 1-day record 13 billion dollars to his fortune, and his ex-wife added 4.6 billion to hers. So this scene is almost more than I can bear. Our half-hearted national attempt to mitigate the pandemic has been embarrassing, dysfunctional, racist, and inhumane. While working for the NY Post, I continued to look for kids playing creatively without adult supervision on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood nearby the newspapers headquarters. At the end of my shift, I often had partially-used rolls of film in my cameras which would be wasted so I tried to find photos to shoot to finish the rolls. मुंबई आज कल (Mumbai Lost and Found) [1/6] • The Indian city of Mumbai is a chaotic, visually dense world that has been in constant motion since time immemorial. When the global COVID-19 pandemic caused a national lockdown, all that activity stopped abruptly as Mumbai’s human animators retreated to the safety of their homes. A city in which it had been nearly impossible to find views unobstructed or unoccupied by people, whether of buildings, streets, plazas, or other public spaces, was suddenly empty, silent, and left visible as if for the first time. These circumstances gave me a unique opportunity as a photographer, resulting in the creation of Mumbai Lost and Found. They allowed me to depict an urban India without the human element that always defines it in photographs. For the first time, because of this sudden depopulation, I was able to create images of my native environment that were not, by default, about a specific moment. I was reminded of Eugene Atget’s late 19th- and early 20th-century documentary photographs of Paris, often taken in the first hours of daylight before the city woke up and further depopulated by the way his long exposures blurred moving figures into ghosts. No wonder Parisian surrealists loved his work. When I was out shooting, I felt like the proverbial flâneur, that untranslatable French word for a strolling, detached observer. Yes, what I saw was surreal, but shooting it was also a transcendent experience that made me all the more conscious of the special qualities of the city in which I grew up. I hope that the photographs in Mumbai Lost and Found give viewers some sense of this personal revelation. *Said image also featured in @vogueitalia ➡️* • I’m grateful to my family who flew me back to India, and the entire faculty at @sva_digitalphoto for encouraging me to pursue this project. • (I know this isn’t like any other work I’ve done or posted about before but definitely what I’m most excited about these days) This is my first documentary project. The first actual afro-latino valedictorian of Harvard Law School, Pedro Albizu Campos graduated in 1921. He graduated while simultaneously studying Literature, philosophy, Chemical Engineering, and Military Science. He was fluent in six modern and two classical languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, and ancient Greek. Pedro was denied the valedictorian distinction by a professor who delayed his final grade to keep him from having the highest grade point average in the 1921 class. They wanted to avoid the embarrassment of having a black Puerto Rican be the valedictorian of one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. Pedro Albizu Campos turned down a Supreme Court clerkship, multiple prestigious firm offers, and plum government appointments to go back to Puerto Rico and practice poverty law. Instead of making himself wealthy, he worked for folks and often receive payment in the form of chickens from poor farmers. He then began to lead the nascent independence movement of Puerto Rico. For this, he was targeted by Hoovers FBI and eventually thrown in prison for leading the independence movement. At the time, it was illegal to fly the Puerto Rican flag. Pedro Albizu Campos suffered for years in prison and was subject to horrific torture and human experiments. They experimented on him using radiation. This was at a time where the U.S. military deliberately exposed Puerto Rican men to mustard gas to see how it affected them. He later suffered a stroke after a decade in prison and was pardoned and released only to die months later in 1965. This is only a very brief retelling of this story. Racism is baked into the DNA of the United States government and how its treated Puerto Rican people.
