🤍 The white cliffs of Dover are often on peoples to do list when they visit Kent, or when they visit England. For those visiting from our European neighbours, it is often the first thing they will see coming across the channel. 🤍 ~ I can see why its on the list of things to do. It is really very beautiful. There are a number of coastal walks that give stunning views out to sea and across the famous white cliffs. We are @nationaltrust members and so planned to park for free in their white cliffs of Dover car park near Dover Castle. We visited last weekend, which happened to be the anniversary of the Battle of Britain, so it was quite busy and the national trust car parks were full. This shot is looking out onto Weymouth Beach from up above near where we parked our car. Weymouth was another place that took me by suprise. What an awesome place. This was one of the first places I visited after moving to the South West from London in February and it made me realise how beautiful this part of the country really is. (and also how grateful I should be to live here) The clear blue sea, long promenade down the beach front and sandy beach, this place is a little bit of seaside heaven. The water goes out for it must be a good mile and stays at waist height, we walked out a fair way and it doesnt seem to get any deeper so is a great beach for kids and familys. The Cotswold Way is a 100 (ish) mile signposted trail in the UK from Chipping Campden to Bath Abbey. I grew up less than 2 miles from part of the path, and yet have never walked more than the shortest bits of it. Yesterday morning I set out to right that wrong. Starting from Cheltenham I took a bus up to the start of the trail in Chipping Campden. It took the best part of 2 hours to wind its way through every village possible but, for the princely sun of just £4.20 it must be one the country’s most reasonably priced public transport services. Add in the fact I was the only passenger for the majority of the journey and it was like having a large over sized taxi just to myself. A small stone pillar and modest plaque mark the starting point (or end point if you’ve walked the route in reverse.) From there an unbroken series of signposts carefully guide you along the route. So frequent and reliable are they that I didn’t once have to check the map for the whole day. Whoever planned the route obviously has a thing for walking up hills as day one is full of them. Given a choice between staying high up on a ridge line or following a valley floor and the path ignores both options. Instead it merely goes up and down and up again with an alarming frequency. In between the gorgeous green countryside are wonderful picture postcard villages. Each with their perfect manicured lawns, Cotswold stone buildings and palpable feeling that you’ve stepped back in time 100 years. It seems Cotswold villages fall into two distinct camps. The first are the villages that have become tourist havens; full of tea rooms, souvenir shops and day tripping families. The rest are the complete opposite; stripped of any former facilities (banks, pubs, post office, even phone boxes) are all gone and now just private dwellings remain. Having started later than normal due to the bus ride, my expectations for the days mileage were tempered but, a final total of 16.5 miles seemed like a more than respectable effort. This was a very strange day. I was deep in feeling. Revisiting old spots that I hadn’t seen for years. It felt familiar but with an undertone of science fiction. The park was full of families. But they were walking obediently around the lake in a designated direction due to Covid. Everything seems almost too beautiful. Ducks swimming in heart shaped circles. People fishing with little poles in the lake artificially stocked with trout. And on every bench a shiny brass memorial gleaming in the sun. I felt for a moment that maybe this was heaven. Whilst out exercising this weekend, I came across this open gate and local scene. It stopped me in my tracks as it felt like a picture postcard staring back at me. I obviously reached for my iPhone and this was the result! 😍 🇮🇲 It isn’t always about capturing a professional image, it’s about being in a moment or environment that speaks to you! 📷 I’m ok with the fact that I didn’t have my DSLR with me because it was more important to enjoy the moment and take a snapshot of the gorgeous scene, than anything else. 📸 This image will likely be one that reminds me of a post Covid-19 summer on the #isleofman and how lucky I felt to have the freedom to work, live and exercise wherever and whenever I wanted, after lockdown had ended. 💐 I love the abundance of colour, the incredible sunshine ☀️ coupled with plenty of recent rainfall ☔️ had clearly worked its magic. Found on the north coast near Tintagel, Rocky Valley provides a lovely walk through a wooded valley down into one of the most stunning of landscapes. At low tide you can find pools to dip into, waterfalls and a beautiful vista out to sea. To get here you have to pull into a lay-by in a dip in the road (between Tintagel and Bude) and take a public footpath towards what looks like someone’s drive. A huge thank you to our supporter Lorna Stanger, from Caithness, for raising an incredible £5,142 to help people living with cancer find their best way through. Lorna endured a jaw-dropping duathlon, running and cycling 755-miles over five days - starting from her home, running from Thurso to Inverness and cycling the famous North Coast 500. Wow! 😮 The original plan of running back to Thurso after cycling the North Coast 500 had to be changed, due to a knee injury. Determined to finish the challenge as planned, Lorna ran from Inverness to Thurso covering 112 miles in one day, only two weeks after completing the duathlon 🚲 🏃♀️ Covering the 755 miles of remote landscape, Lorna certainly wasnt alone. She was cheered on by friends, family and car horns tooting in support. Lorna is pictured here in our Macmillan greens: Wearing my Macmillan t-shirt made a huge difference. I was stopped by passers-by wanting to donate, which was incredible. We would like to say a BIG thank you to Lorna, her support team and everyone who donated. ~Stay-cationing, Simplicity and Slowing Down~ I have just returned from a wonderfully nourishing 5 days holidaying in West Cork. My parents have returned for two weeks every year for the last 25 years or so to this beautiful spot on the Beara Peninsula. The Beara Peninsula is nothing short of magical, and I am suffering today from withdrawal symptoms and the grieving one suffers following a break that has been looked forward to for many months. As my family have always stay-cationed, there is nothing new in the experience for me/for them, but for anyone still feeling disappointed for lack of foreign travel this summer... I could not recommend more highly the nourishment value of holidaying in Ireland. Our country is so incredibly beautiful... and the wilderness and diversity of weather conditions is more healing than it is inconvenient. It keeps life interesting and exciting to never know what weather lies ahead in the next week/day/hours. There is beautiful simplicity in jumping in a car and driving familiar roads to familiar places, with a commitment to hike, swim, eat well and relax each day with a book, and little else to worry about. The added benefit of holidaying with my parents of course is the obligation to slow down to the pace of the slowest member of the family (photographed here)... whose moods are like the West Cork weather when he climbs a mountain, and whose pace forces everyone to slow down and smell the heather. The mood is dark on the ascent, and bright on the descent... as the hike becomes his favourite walk, and the day the best day of his life. 😂 He is very slow to go into the water, and even slower to come out, with ones pep talks having one remind oneself how beautiful an experience this all is, followed by his fantastic new mood post-walk/post-swim reflecting it all back to you. Theres no doubt that my parents are exceptionally patient people, but there are certainly benefits to slow-living and a daily appreciation for the simple things (mostly food), as demonstrated by John.
