The next session of Coastal Scrub School starts on October 5th! Coastal Scrub School is inspired by the need to supplement online schooling with outdoor education in small groups. Multi-age pods of 10 children (5 years old and up) meet at Slide Ranch in the afternoon for 3-week sessions, 3-4 afternoons a week, 12:00-4:30 pm or 2:30-4:30. Coastal Scrub School also welcomes Junior Environmental Educators, 14-18 years old, who cultivate their youth leadership and environmental education skills with their Slide Ranch teacher as a mentor. Were calling on our entire US-based specialty coffee community to pledge support for the United States Postal Service as a vital service to our country.  As the most widely available and affordable way to ship fresh roasted coffee to peoples homes, we rely on USPS for our businesses. Our US-based specialty coffee industry represents over $25 billion of retail value, and a high proportion of our package shipments are sent by USPS Priority Mail. The current administrations actions have led to cut backs in USPS services and its ability to pick up, process, transport, and deliver our packages. We do have the option to switch small parcel fulfillment to UPS, FedEx, or another carrier. However, we will not switch. We see the current administrations actions as an attack on the upcoming 2020 Presidential election and an effort to undermine Americans ability to vote with mail-in ballots, the safest way to conduct this election during our COVID-19 pandemic. The cuts in USPS funding and the actions of the Trump-appointed postmaster general has led to increased delays in shipments and lost packages, not to mention the threat to the jobs of the over 630,000 postal workers nationwide. So were today announcing our commitment to sticking with USPS for our mail-order coffee shipments. If packages are delayed or lost, we will do our best to replace them as soon as possible. Were also asking our customers to be patient and understanding. As with so much during this pandemic, were all experiencing challenges together but doing the right thing involves making choices that dont always prioritize our convenience. Were also inviting our entire specialty coffee industry community to join us in this commitment. Please share and encourage others to join us as well, in any industry there is. Hometown H2O Project 2 Update: Meet the Gleason family, recipients of our second Hometown H2O well project! Previously, the Gleason family had to pump water from a nearby river or drive 40 miles to get drinking water from a spring. Steve Gleason suffers from COPD and heart issues, which make the already arduous treks to the river and spring even more dangerous than they already are. Combined with the risks that COVID-19 bring to the elderly and immunocompromised, the potential outcomes of not having direct access to running water are severe. The river pump used by the Gleason’s was unreliable and required ongoing repairs. Silt from the river flow builds up in the pump, causing it to fail and forcing the couple to use non-potable water collected from a rain barrel. The most recent failure resulted in a lack of running water to the home for two months, prompting the Gleason’s to heed a neighbor’s recommendation to apply for assistance through the Water Well Trust, a critical nonprofit partner of Xylem and Hometown H2O. The new well, which will provide Steve and Lana Gleason (both aged 69) with potable water directly to their home, marks Hometown H2O’s second well donation project this year! #hometownh2o #waterboys #cleanwater - @waterboysorg on Instagram

After over a year of planning, our Corrine Drive planter project is underway! With the help of @sierraclubflorida, @tarflower.fnps, and over a dozen volunteers, we were able to plant pollinator-friendly native plants in the planters on Corrine Drive in Audubon Park. Now, these planters can foster beautiful habitats for bees, butterflies, and other amazing pollinators. We need to do every we can protect and expand pollinator habitats. COVID-19 has severely impacted the supply of blood units available in local hospitals, because many of the common donation sites were forced to close. But as New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy has stated, “The Covid-19 outbreak threatens to disrupt our blood supply and we must continue these operations to ensure we can meet the critical meeting medical needs of all New Jersey Residents.” The American Red Cross volunteers and staff work to provide relief and support to those in crisis. This includes disaster relief, supporting international services, helping military families and veterans, and providing lifesaving blood through hosting blood drives. This past week, Puratos for Purpose was lucky enough to partner with Puratos US at our Headquarters in Pennsauken, NJ to sponsor the third annual America Red Cross Blood Drive. @trca_hq staff partnered with Friends of Marie Curtis Park to conduct a watershed clean-up along the mouth of Etobicoke Creek and the shoreline and naturalized areas of Marie Curtis Park. Conducting clean-ups along waterways and natural areas is very important because of the significant negative impacts on the natural environment, posing health threats to both humans and wildlife. Plastics, in particular, persist for a long time and never fully break down. If plastics debris is not removed, they gradually break down into smaller pieces known as microplastics, are harder to collect and enter water systems more easily. Research has revealed that plastics and microplastics are found at various depths in the water and are often mistaken as a food source to wildlife, and when ingested, can be fatal. 2020 has been a difficult year for many Australians as we all face a multitude of challenges, making it even more important for us to ask our friends, family and colleagues, ‘Are you OK?’ One of CareFlight’s aircrew officers, Eric (left), is keen to encourage people to have a conversation with each other and remove the stigma around mental health. “There is this misconception that people working in aviation and healthcare are superhumans who are emotionally bulletproof, when actually, we are some of the more susceptible people to feeling helpless and disconnected. The community doesn’t have that clarity on the pressures of the job and situations that we face, particularly when organisations like ours are helping the most vulnerable Australians,” said Eric. “It can be an awkward conversation to have, but it is better to have that chat than not have it at all. It just takes one person to speak up about how they are going and this is the most powerful thing you can do for a friend or colleague; you are letting them know that it is OK to experience the ups and downs in life. If you are in a work environment, it’s worth developing trusting relationships with colleagues to nurture the opportunities to have a check in.” Speaking from personal experience, Eric said it took him some time to realise that he needed help. Eventually, it was a friend who encouraged him to seek help after a conversation. “While it is important to be there for someone, we also have to ensure that we ask ourselves the question. Blackwoods Innovation Category Manager, Warren Wilson, and National Account Manager, Ross Spargo, have been busy assembling COVID-19 PPE kits for @kmartaus and @targetaus stores across the country while maintaining a strong focus on social distancing and minimising contact. The products within the kits, including gloves, anti-bacterial wipes, masks, specs and contamination waste bags are picked from Blackwoods Altona distribution centre and left in a transition area. From there, Warren and Ross collect the stock and move it to training rooms which are not currently in use. #LESVOS - FOOD DISTRIBUTION SUPPORT⁣ ⁣ Over the last 2 days, a team of R4R volunteers supported our friends @eurorelief, along with other organisations, to distribute food for thousands of people living on the main road between Moria and Mytilene, after the catastrophic fire in Moria camp. ⁣ ⁣ The situation is dire, but aid workers from around the world are on the island supporting emergency relief efforts to provide vital humanitarian aid to refugees and asylum seekers on Lesvos. ⁣ ⁣ Men, women, and children living along the roads remain in extremely difficult and dangerous conditions with a lack of security and safety. Last weekend, ABNC hosted a trash clean up event organized by NOAA. The event date coincided with our bi-weekly Stewardship Saturday volunteer work day. 12 ABNC volunteers and two staff members took part in the event in which we paddled along Armand Bayou and removed trash with our #paddlethegulf reusable trash bags. Despite the wind, it was a beautiful day on the waters of Armand Bayou. Approximately 2 cubic yards of debris (mainly single use plastic bottles) were removed from the bayou in 3 hours! RAEN 2020 harvest is all in as of yesterday🙌. Unreal year. Covid... This environmental challenge. Fires from Washington, Oregon and California. It’s the first year where the fires arrived early enough to affect our choices at RAEN given Pinot Noir buds early, ripens early and is one of the first to be picked. Mid harvest, roughly 50% done and the fires broke out forcing us to make decisions I think we can be proud of. The vintage itself was incredible leading up to this and I remain optimistic and know great wines up and down the coast will come from this vintage. I can’t wait to see, taste and be a part of them. Apart from harvest, what I’m about to say is not political. Our human existence is not blue or red. We are a part of this earth and the preservation of Mother Nature and humanity is one in the same, and ultimately a unifying cause. We know our climate is spiraling out of control, and those that don’t see this, need to get outside and spend time in nature to understand what I’m saying. In this time we should all stand together to fight climate change- no matter our differences. When looking at our country, and most countries globally, there are massive divides similar to here. But there should be one voice bringing us all together, and that is how to preserve earth, nature and humanity 🌎... The Tyendinaga Mohawk Council were happy to attend a viewing of the new MBQ Water Truck. MBQ Water Delivery Service was implemented in 2010 with one 2,400-gallon delivery truck. This program currently services 187 clients. Recently, MBQ has acquired a new 3,500-gallon truck. The current hours for water delivery are Monday – Friday from 7 am to 11 pm. With a second truck now operational, deliveries may now be split between Eastend and Westend, during new hours to avoid nighttime delivery. As many of you might know, these past few months I have been running for Breonna Taylor. My friend Gina @gwickstead started this back in June with @seenicrun01 to shed light to her case and both Nicole and I were on board from the get go - who doesnt agree that Breonna needed justice? Well, this week she and her family did NOT receive it. Rather they were forgotten in the grand jurys decision with no criminal charges files on ANY of the officers involved. Inexcusable. Needless to say, this is unsatisfactory and straight up unjustifiable. We are so disappointed - as well as the millions of people worldwide that agree - that Breonna and her family were forgotten and the system is broken and needs to be changed. I have included pics from all the runs Ive done locally here in La Mesa along with the awesome people who believe in our cause. @runforbreonna was created as a peaceful outlet to seek justice for an innocent person and over these past few months, at a minimum, has given us strength to push forward. Im Labor haben sie unter anderem “Algen” gebastelt und einen kleinen Wettbewerb durchgeführt: Die Alge, die am langsamsten im Wasser sinkt, gewinnt. In Gewässern ist es für Algen wichtig, dass sie in der Nähe der sonnigen Oberfläche bleiben und nicht absinken. 🦠 In anderen Experimenten haben sie die CO2-Produktion und CO2-Entgasung durch gewöhnliche Lebensmittel wie Hefe, Backpulver oder Cola getestet. Das CO2 haben sie sichtbar gemacht, zum Beispiel indem es brennende Kerzen erstickt hat.🕯️ Mit Betreuung vom Swiss Nanoscience Institute wurden ausserdem verschiedene Versuche zum Thema Schall durchgeführt. . Im Hörsaal haben die Kinder zudem eine Gerichtsverhandlung nachgespielt, in der sie das Strafmass für einen Handydiebstahl festgelegt haben. 👩‍⚖️ . Und auch draussen haben die Kinder viel erlebt. 30 bags of trash was collected today at Monument Lake by 20 caring volunteers during the annual Creek Week clean-up event. Most of the trash was cigarette butts, fishing lines, beer and soda cans, plastic beverage bottles and flip flops. This trash would’ve ultimately ended up in the lake. Mother Nature does so much for us and our health and we need to do the same for her and take care of her. When we were done collecting trash, we were blessed by the site of two majestic bald eagles soaring over the lake 🦅 . We filled our letter “N” with the trash for the Litter Letter Project. Last week, state officers Justin and Anna were able to visit with FFA members at the @mocattlemens Fantasy Feedout awards presentation. Chapters who participated had previously selected a steer that was donated by a Missouri cattle producer. The steers were then fed our at MU. At the end of the contest, the overall profitability of each steer was determined and the top 5 chapters were recognized. The contest helped take lessons learned in the agricultural classroom and apply them directly to production agriculture. Congratulations to all who participated in the Fantasy Feedout this year! BE ON THE LOOKOUT!!! Hyannis FD has established a new bike unit. The bike unit will be out on patrol around the Main St and Harbor areas this summer on weekends. The unit will travel with 2 FF/EMTs and have basic life support capabilities. The goal is to supplement responses in high pedestrian and car traffic areas while being able to engage with the community. Thank you to Barnstable Police Department for allowing FF Riley and FF Omerzu to attend a quick training with them and allow us to borrow numerous bikes. The Society works to collect, collate, record and preserve the history of the Serpentine, Hopeland, Keysbrook and Mardella areas. Hey friends, I hope you’re well. Here’s a little update for anyone curious. ❤️ - Kat & I farewelled Victoria after the first lockdown. We chugged our little van into New South Wales and we’ve been living here since June. We spent between June and September at a bushfire relief camp in Milton, NSW. The organisation is called BlazeAid, a volunteer organisation/charity who help communities rebuild after natural disasters. This particular camp’s mission is to build fences for farmers who had their fences destroyed in the summer bushfires. The BlazeAid chapter is a very long one, but the short version is that Kat & I became the coordinators of the camp. The camp was about to be closed when we took over, which would have left nearly 200 farmers in the lurch. Kat and I decided not to sail on the sinking ship, and we managed to heave it into order over the course of four brutal weeks. We worked very long days throughout that time, with no breaks for the weekend. We worked consecutive 12-14 hour days for a month until we eventually figured out what was going on. By mid-July, the show was back on the road and fences were still going up! The continuation of that camp is one of my proudest achievements, and certainly Kat & I’s biggest accomplishment together. . As the cogs began to turn, we got to enjoy the perks of the job a little more. We had unforgettable conversations with farmers, who shared their life changing stories with us. We entrenched ourselves deeply into this warm, resilient and welcoming community. We watched stock return to their paddocks for the first time in eight months after the land had been ravaged by fires and then floods. We shared this journey with 26 hardworking young people from nine different nationalities, as well as five Aussies! We faced every challenge as one. They became our family and lifelong friends. I hope they will be endlessly proud of their impact on the Milton community. At the beginning of September, we parted ways with BlazeAid. It was time to renovate our van, earn some dollars and start travelling. Things are slower now and I’m slowly gravitating back towards music.
