The Zunic family, Begarra Almonds, are the Almondco Quality Award recipients for season 2019. This 3rd generation farming family purchased their first almond orchard in 1997. Their roots in Riverland horticulture however started much earlier with Micks mother and father settling on a property in the Renmark North area after migrating to Australia from Croatia in 1956. Micks brother Peter and family continue the tradition on the original Zunic property. Fast forward almost 23 years and now Micks children are involved in the family farming venture. Mick, along with sons Mark and James, discuss their story and their hands on family approach to maintaining orchard cleanliness, to produce almonds of a high quality. Congratulations to the Zunic family for winning the award for the 2019 Season – ‘harvested and marketed in 2019’. Several acres have burned and firefighters are still monitoring the situation, as fire continues to burn on the upper portion of the property far away from the winery. Were 👏👏👏 for Reece Thompson, one of the winners of Indiana Landmarks 2020 Sandi Servaas Memorial Award.⁠ ⁠ In 2016, a diminutive sign on a wooden post and four unremarkable gravestones near a farm field in Thorntown offered the only hint of the site’s history as a final resting place for the community’s early African American residents. Reece was looking for an Eagle Scout project when he learned about the cemeterys significant heritage. Today through his efforts, a decorative fence surrounds restored gravestones, and a new marker offers deeper interpretation of the cemetery’s heritage.⁠ ⁠ To develop a preservation plan, Reece met with cemetery trustees, a local newspaper editor, library historian, state officials, county attorney, and scout leaders, and formed the Colored Cemetery Committee. He collected donations, secured permits and a corporate sponsor, wrote grants, and rallied 28 volunteers to help repair headstones. He raised money to fund a ground penetrating radar study of the grounds, install a decorative fence around its boundaries, and erect an Indiana Historical Bureau marker noting its historical significance. For the restored sites dedication in August 2019, Reece Thompson located and invited descendants of those buried in the cemetery to attend as guests of honor. ⁠ ⁠ At Indiana Landmarks virtual annual meeting this Saturday, September 12, well honor Reece and other preservation leaders. The #WalbridgeFire has claimed a Sonoma County historical landmark, the 136-year-old Daniels School, a one-room schoolhouse on Mill Creek Road that had recently been fully restored. Residents Bonnie Cussins-Pitkin, her husband Richard and their friend Sue Campbell, spent almost two decades to restore the historical #DanielsSchool, which was completed in late 2019. “It burnt to the ground, everything is pretty much devastated all the way back,” said Mike Hodgin, a Mill Creek resident who’s lived in the area since the ‘80s. Fernie SAR was tasked by the RCMP this afternoon to rescue an injured biker on the Swine Flu trail. The rider, a local man, fell off while riding up the upper section of the climb. He sustained significant injuries to his back and ribs when he fell off the trail. The 22nd of July would have been Slt Abbigail Cowbrough’s 24th birthday. As she was a Marine Systems Engineering Officer, the Marine Systems Engineering Department (MSED) gathered together to celebrate her birthday and showcase the plaques they made in her honour. * Nicknamed “Lil Ma’am”, Slt Abbigail Cowbrough was a beloved member of the MSED. To honour her legacy, two commemorative plaques were created by the department: one to be mounted in the lobby of the After Auxiliary Machinery Room (AAMR) as “Abbi’s AMR” which has the signatures of the ship’s crew on the back; and one commemorative plaque describing her feisty personality, her spirit of comradeship and higher learning, and her joie-de vivre, which has the song “Amazing Grace” written on the back, will be hung in the Machinery Control Room (MCR). Twelve Westchester County Parks Playgrounds will officially reopen for the season on Saturday, September 26. The parks are open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk. The playgrounds are located at: Blue Mountain in Peekskill, Croton Gorge in Cortlandt, Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, Georges Island in Montrose, Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, Ridge Road in Hartsdale, Sprain Ridge in Yonkers, Saxon Woods in White Plains, V.E. Macy in Ardsley, Tibbetts Brook in Yonkers, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River and Willsons Woods in Mount Vernon. Parents and guardians choosing to allow children to use playground equipment are asked to follow these Playground Safe guidelines: • Do not visit if you are sick, tested positive for COVID-19, or were recently (within 14 days) exposed to COVID-19. • Do not use the playground if it appears crowded. • Do wear a mask if you are over the age of two and able to medically tolerate when not able to maintain social distance. • Do maintain at least six feet social distance from people you don’t live with. • Do bring and use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
