We believe that gleaning - the practice of rescuing unsellable surplus food from farms - can be a vital tool to those addressing food insecurity in their local communities, particularly in the time of a pandemic when the food system has experienced a number of shocks. Every community has specific needs, and we want to share our knowledge from 8 years of gleaning and to better understand how this can address those needs in a variety of local contexts. We are hosting a series of 4 webinars over the next month in which we hope to train and support a variety of community groups to set up their own hubs. Starting an agency has been a bit of a wild ride, and it’s taken us some amazing places. This past Saturday, at our commencement ceremony, we celebrated this year’s 78 class graduates, as well as the 20 Stewards who completed their internship projects in 2019.⁣ ⁣ The impact of their projects? 1498 people educated across 12 counties. 1590 hours spent working for the environment. 2502 volunteer hours contributed by 648 recruited friends, family members and neighbors.⁣ ⁣ The result? Restored landscapes and habitats. Stream assessments. New green infrastructure. Community waste initiatives. All of that, and so much more. Great experience today with daughter Eva handling 50-lb bags of malt (literally a ton) for milling at the historic 1830 Thompson Neely Mill at Washington Crossing State Park. First time this mill has processed malt in recent history -- maybe ever! -- and head miller Glenn Blakely was pleased that it handled it like a champ, grinding through 2,000 lb at 750 lb/hr. Reposted with our thanks and gratitude for @oldtrailschool *** Last week our Librarian Heather Swift and her husband loaded 44 boxes of books collected from our March book drive into their cars and drove them to the @kidsbookbank. 📦 From February 25 through March 5 Old Trail co-hosted a book drive with @westernreserveacademy for Cleveland Kids Book Bank whose goal is to break the poverty cycle by exposing low-income children to language and reading from birth. Heather said that while she was at the warehouse delivering, one of the staff members noticed a Young Adult book titled Fantasy League by Mike Lupica and was thrilled - she had just received a call that morning with a request for Young Adult books, but they didn’t have any in stock. Their CEO said, I cannot explain to you how thrilling it is to see kids taking on this cause. As a co-founder, it is somewhat surreal to see the growth and theres something beautiful about the ownership your kids seem to feel. Pretty wild to think that something that consumed my entire being for more than a decade has become an after thought, and I didn’t realize the milestone until after. Its all hands on deck to help package up all of the fruits and vegetables for our Brighter Bites families. 💚 During the boxing project, volunteers will help build produce orders for Brighter Bites schools at the Houston Food Bank. This includes sorting and boxing produce, then stacking the completed boxes of produce onto pallets. Im Rahmen einer Feierstunde hat Oberbürgermeister Daniel Schranz der Oberhausenerin Aynur Celikdöven für ihr herausragendes soziales und ehrenamtliches Engagement das Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande überreicht. Aynur Celikdöven arbeitet als Facharbeiterin in der Metallindustrie, ist verheiratet und hatte zwei Kinder. Ihre Tochter erkrankte Mitte der 1980er Jahre an Leukämie, konnte aber dank einer Knochenmarkstransplantation geheilt werden. Ihr Sohn erkrankte ebenfalls an Krebs und verstarb 1999 im Alter von sieben Jahren. Daraufhin gründete sie im Jahr 2001 in Oberhausen den Verein ,,Weg der Hoffnung e.V.“ für krebskranke Kinder und deren Angehörige, die beraten, aufgeklärt und vor allem gestärkt werden sollten. Die 54-Jährige unterstützt Familien, die oft aus der Türkei kommen, auch in Bezug auf Sprachschwierigkeiten und pflegt stets einen engen Kontakt zu den Betroffenen. 2003 gründete sie außerdem in einer Kleingartenanalage in Sterkrade den Treffpunkt ,,Engelsgarten“ für betroffene Familien und deren Kinder, die sich in der Krebsnachsorge befinden. Neben ihrer beratenden Tätigkeit organisiert Aynur Celikdöven jährliche Aktionsabende für Knochenmark- und Stammzellenspenden. Bereits im Jahr 2017 wurde sie für ihr ehrenamtliches Engagement mit der Ehrennadel der Stadt Oberhausen ausgezeichnet. „Für mich ist es eine große Freude, Sie hier begrüßen zu dürfen. With 44 members out with us on this chilly, rainy, blustery evening, Melissa and David won the hearts of the group and a good chunk of their cheques, taking home $2,600 towards the nearly $100,000 this group has left to raise by February to be able to resurface the track. Entre el 01 y el 27 de octubre, el Centro Interdisciplinario para la Investigación Acuícola, INCAR, realizará una segunda versión del taller “Fortalecimiento de la Educación para una Acuicultura Sustentable”, dirigido a profesores de la especialidad de acuicultura de Liceos Técnicos de Enseñanza Media. “Anualmente el centro desarrolla un taller de actualización sobre los avances científicos y técnicos que contribuyen al desarrollo de la acuicultura sustentable en Chile. Esta iniciativa considera la participación de diversos investigadores e investigadoras de nuestro centro, quienes abordarán temáticas como situación actual de la acuicultura, enfermedades de peces en sistemas de agua dulce, el enfoque ecosistémico y concluirá con un “coaching” sobre la labor docente y un taller sobre la metodología “Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos (ABP), para que los profesores puedan aplicar este método con estudiantes de la especialidad”, explicó el Encargado de Vinculación con la Sociedad del Centro INCAR, Pablo Carrasco. Australien im Camper - und beides hat uns absolut gepackt! Wir sind absolute Neulinge, beim campen und auch in Australien. Hatten keinerlei Erfahrung, waren in sehr jungen Jahren mal beim zelten aber mit einem großen Wohnmobil waren wir noch nie unterwegs. Aber genau das macht es aus. Neues und unbekanntes wagen. Mutig sein und dabei über sich hinaus wachsen. Ok, dass wir das Abenteuer als Camper dann ausgerechnet in Australien eingehen wollten, würde vielleicht nicht jeder so machen. Wir bekamen aber vorher schon viel ermutigende Tips und würden es jederzeit wieder so tun. Australien ist für diese Art zu reisen einfach wie gemacht und noch dazu unbeschreiblich schön, so vielseitig, und absolut ideal um sich sowohl Städte als auch die traumhafte Landschaft mit doch ordentlicher Kilometerentfernung zu den verschiedenen Highlights anzuschauen. Und reisen mit Kind - wenn du dein Daheim komplett dabei hast - ist eh total easy, macht viel Spaß und lässt alles so einfach erscheinen. Alle spontanen Einfälle benötigen keine große Planung, ob nun doch nochmal schnell ins Meer hüpfen oder auf Bäume klettern, einkaufen oder doch mal was gescheites kochen - alles ist möglich! Wir sind sehr happy, Australien auf diese Weise erkunden zu können. As part of #HungerActionMonth, the Bloustein School’s Graduate Society of Healthcare Leaders put their efforts toward raising donations for @ElijahsPromise Community Kitchen. They gathered food supplies, hygiene products, and clothing items. This past weekend the students met at a local park, donned masks and gloves, and packed more than 100 snack and hygiene bags, as well as bulk items and donations such as rice, pasta, oil, and clothing. They packed three cars full of donations to make the trip over and deliver the items to Chef Curtis and his team at EP. GSHL was also able to make a monetary contribution because of the amazing amount of donations they were able to raise for the #Give5forEP campaign. Each person that donated $5 asked five friends to do the same, and asked those five friends to pass it along to another five people. - @blousteinschool on Instagram

Congratulations to SUNY Adirondack Fishing Team members Val Decesare, Louis Zalar, Sam Foster and Lauren Roberts, who placed in the recent N.Y. State Collegiate Qualifying Tournament held on Lake George. Val and Louis totaled 6.57 pounds for their best five fish, taking third place. Val also caught the tournament lunker (biggest fish), a 2.82-pound smallmouth bass. Sam Foster and Lauren Roberts placed second, with a total of 8.12 pounds for their biggest five bass. Lauren and Sam were beat out by a team from Paul Smiths College for the win. Both teams have now qualified for the Collegiate Cup State Championship, which will be held Saturday on Lake Champlain, where they will face teams from Clarkson, Paul Smiths and SUNY Plattsburgh. - @sunyadk on Instagram

30 bags of trash was collected today at Monument Lake by 20 caring volunteers during the annual Creek Week clean-up event. Most of the trash was cigarette butts, fishing lines, beer and soda cans, plastic beverage bottles and flip flops. This trash would’ve ultimately ended up in the lake. Mother Nature does so much for us and our health and we need to do the same for her and take care of her. When we were done collecting trash, we were blessed by the site of two majestic bald eagles soaring over the lake 🦅 . We filled our letter “N” with the trash for the Litter Letter Project. We wanted to share this particular drop off because of the kindness and love it manifested. First and foremost, the masks had lovely notes written by our valued customers. We are so thankful for their ongoing support, but what really struck a cord was the direct message we received from @yawkub . He let us know he picked up a few things from Skinner’s Pharmacy @skinnerspharmacyca and noticed they were short on masks and wanted to purchase masks from us to send to them. Of course we knew Skinner’s would be one of our mask donation drop offs. However, I couldn’t help but think of this beautiful human chain of helping hands. The customers writing their supportive messages, Jacob notifying us, our employees willing to work and drop off the masks, and the pharmacists at Skinner´s who are on the frontline of delivering health. Last week, we held our first Operation Care Package distribution! Throughout the afternoon, participants stopped by to pick up care packages containing shampoo, feminine hygiene products, snacks, toothbrushes, tee-shirts, and more. It was a fun day of community building, and we’re looking forward to future distributions! @travelwithapaddle is stoked to be part of @parley.tv x @corona south west tour and out on the beaches collecting ocean plastic in our local area. Around 80% of what we found was fishing nets and the rest was either plastic or PPE... We first began working with @parleymaldives to fight plastic on local islands, so it is great to be able to do the same back home. The beach can often look clean when you start... but once you start finding plastic under the stones, you just can’t stop! It’s everywhere! It was nice to meet other locals litter picking the shoreline too and discussing the best ways to dispose of the waste we find daily. We are absolutely thrilled to have funded around 45,000 meals over 16 weeks for busy frontline staff, during the peak of the virus. This was only possible thanks to an incredible £150,000 donation by the Acott Family Charitable Foundation, support from local caterers, businesses and clubs, and donations from individuals to our Covid-19 appeal. We know this support has made an impact across the hospital; as one member of staff told us recently: These free meals were so appreciated. The joy of not thinking about making or buying lunch made a big difference to daily life. It was a very thoughtful touch in helping staff feel well looked after during the pandemic peak.
