This movement is bringing people of all backgrounds together in solidarity—a thought that’s inspiring to some and terrifying to others. A Black man was killed, and seeing it has touched humanity in a way that is much deeper than surface beefs and drama. This tragedy has now become a shared platform for dialogue and change. It has also refocused much-needed light on issues that may not receive the same relative support and exposure. Immigration isn’t an issue that only impacts people from #Mexico and #CentralAmerica, but our families from and connected to that region often carry the brunt of the anxiety—dealing with the majority of the targeting, trauma, and stigma in Southern California. Pain and corruption don’t wait in line, and the positive momentum of this unity needs to be maintained and focused on the various threats to peace in the communities that we share. We have the opportunity and capacity to unite and address the various complex issues that we face. There will be more goofy shit. There will be more negativity. There will be decisions made that we don’t agree with. Things won’t be perfect, but we all need to start looking at the best instead of the worst when forming our opinions about “them” and “they”. Have you stopped dieting but still feel out of control around food? Something that is SO common is to release physical restriction of foods but still be mentally or emotionally restricting. Here’s what this looks like: 👉You give up dieting and allow yourself to eat whatever you want. You keep all the foods around and eat whatever you are craving, but after several weeks (or months) of this you’re still feeling out of control around food, still binging, and still having a hard time finding “comfortable” fullness. Then chances are, you are still mentally restricting (swipe for some examples👉): -Still conscious of everything you eat⁠ -Still judging your food choices⁠ as good or bad -Still feeling bad when they feel you’ve eaten the “wrong” thing or “too much”⁠ -Still trying to “control” yourself around food ⁠ You may not be physically restricting or cutting out any foods/food groups, but if you still have any mental restriction going on - even if it’s subconscious - it increases cravings, makes you want those foods more, and makes it tough to stop once you start eating. Because you are sending your body a subconscious message: tomorrow Ill try not to do this again...better get it in now.⁠ Many people I work with tell me they don’t understand why they are still overeating or why they can’t stop eating certain foods. But that is because there is still some mental restriction left. To work through mental restriction, practice this:⁠ 1. Begin to notice any judgmental thought or guilty thought that pops up in relation to food. 2. Noice the thought, then reframe it into a more helpful thought: -I’m allowed to have ____ whenever I want.⁠ -It’s ok for me to eat ____. -There’s plenty of food, I can have some later if I want to.⁠ -When I’m hungry, I’ll eat again.⁠ Eventually, as unwind the mental restriction and give yourself physical AND mental unconditional permission to eat, you’ll build back body trust 🥳 #intuitiveeatingjourney - @alissarumseyrd on Instagram

Ive been back at the gym lately after a long time off and have noticed its one of the few places that I still, despite myself, display a kind of performative masculinity in order to protect myself. I instinctively butch it up even though theres no urgent reason for me to. Its been a source of enormous personal frustration lately that Im still unlearning this, still unravelling the expectations of my gender that I clung to for many years. But I want to express, both for myself and others, that unlearning the behaviours youve built up as a cocoon to protect yourself takes time. Behaviours that have developed over a long period of time take a long period of time to come away. Its important to practice self-compassion and patience towards yourself and anyone around you still learning to become themselves. A little bit of compassion can go a long way. I can’t believe these types of TV shows are still getting air time @channel4 . Firstly, Michael Mosley has not been a practicing doctor for over 30 years. Since then he has turned himself into a self-proclaimed weight loss guru but actually has no authorisation to provide nutritional advice, yet he still promotes 800 calorie diets. . Very low calorie diets (VLCD) should only be administered under close supervision. They are only ever intended for specific populations i.e. those with Type 2 Diabetes, not for the general population watching this show. This is because a diet of this restrictive nature can be very damaging for your body and mind, therefore needs constant support. . Restrictive diets are not only likely to lead to nutritional deficiencies but also when you lose weight rapidly, a lot of this is actually just water weight and muscle mass, not fat mass . VLCD are likely to trigger eating disorders. I’ve worked with many clients at the @Rhitrition clinic who have gone through years of yo-yo dieting, going from periods of basically starvation to binge eating, resulting in food preoccupation and disordered eating. . Also the fact that he expects behaviour change without looking at the connection between food and emotions, infuriates me. One volunteer opened up about using food as comfort to grieve a family members death and this was completely overlooked. . But I think this programme misses out the most important emphasis, which is that you have to actually stick to the plan for an extended period of time, and change your habits for good, in order to achieve long-lasting change. Not just for 21 days. . Why do I still watch this rubbish? Because I secretly love watching infuriating TV, that makes me want to yell and chuck things at the telly. . Love to call myself out with a good meme. This is a personal post about anti-Blackness that I’m hoping might be useful for some of my fellow non-Black POC, for my white friends, and for my employer colleagues. I’ve been re-examining a lot of my past choices and actions in the light of the current moment. There is a reckoning coming for those with power, and that includes me, especially because of my role as an employer. . . I recently learned the acronym DARVO, a pattern of response to being held accountable: Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Oppressor. I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Mei Mei and/or I personally have perpetrated racism, upheld anti-Blackness, and failed to ensure equity our Black employees in ways both large and small, knowingly or otherwise. Recognizing this brings up a lot of feelings. DARVO has been a helpful framework as I observe my own emotions during this process — maybe it could help you too. . . Deny: This is when the voice in my head points to other business owners (mentally, or on instagram) who have committed egregious and overt acts of racism and say: “that’s not me! I’m not racist like them!” . . Attack: This is when the voice in my head tries to turn the tables on whoever is holding me accountable (sometimes this is myself). My knee-jerk reaction is to blame someone else, or the “situation I was in.” As an employer, the voice in my head sometimes says things like “they should have communicated better” or “it was a really tough time.” . . Reverse Victim & Oppressor: This is when I start to just feel bad for myself and completely forget about the person or people I’ve hurt. The voice says: “it’s so much responsibility. I did my best. This is so uncomfortable for me. Why is this happening to me.” . . I try to allow this internal voice to say its piece, and then tuck it away where it came from: a place of fear. I try tell myself that the only way to address the fear is to grow. Increasingly, I’m able to identify AND accept my failures and the inequitable and/or racist impacts created by them. Joining the twitter band wagon 🐦 I get asked this on a daily basis and if it isn’t that question it’s another form of the same question! For years I fell into that bad vs good mindset myself. I would only eat single ingredient foods an avoid anything processed like it was covid. The truth is you only have: * Foods higher or lower in calories. * More or less nutritious foods. * Foods that support your current goals or ones that do not. I personally like to eat high amounts of fruit and vegetables and a high protein diet. It suits both my current goals and values and I really enjoy it. If I want a pizza, I’ll get a pizza. If I want a bit of chocolate I will eat a bit of chocolate. If I want a deep fat fried mars bar then I’ll get one. I will take the above questions into consideration. If I want to be as healthy as possible then eating all of the above in massive amounts and going over on calories week after week isn’t part of the bigger picture and I really don’t think I would enjoy that... They would coach their clients to perfection and achieve outstanding results with everyone they work with. Unfortunately, coaches are human’s who work with humans. Thus, imperfection is inherent in the coaching process. We, like everyone else, make mistakes. In fact, we are prone to making many more errors (without serious consequence) than professionals in most other industries. That being said, I believe every coach should look favourably upon their mistakes. Coaches should reflect regularly and critically evaluate their tenure and practice to identify areas for improvement. By looking back on your experience and trying to spot the mistakes you have made, you are afforded an opportunity to learn and grow. Bottom line... If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not learning. If you’re making the same mistakes over and over you’re a bozo. Learning from you’re own mistakes and you’ll one day become a great coach. From young to old, in sickness and in health, doing Get Ups consistently, consistently well, and with consistently rising difficulty or load, can hold immense potential for improving both the mind and the body.  Consider this: Strength is not just the state of our muscular system. Rather, our strength is the result of the interconnectedness of our stress load, breath, mind, and body all working in concert with each other. In a sense, our Strength is a manifestation of confidence bestowed on the physical body by the nervous system in response to the degree of synergy, health, vitality, athleticism, and symmetry jiving within it. So, strength is like a physiological “score”—which is why it depletes faster in a sick person than in a person who just doesn’t go to the gym. In this light we can also begin to understand why humans placed under stressful enough scenarios can accomplish amazing feats of strength, like pick up a car to save a life or why some people, no matter how much they lift, never get any stronger. The Get Up teaches anybody how to breathe, coordinate, move, stabilize, lift, control, and stay patient and focused all at the same time. And while it takes time to learn, that time leads to far more body awareness and functional improvement than you’d ever achieve doing everything you gain apart from each other hoping everything “plays nice” in daily life. There’s a weird dogma in the the nutrition space that the only way to have a healthy relationship with food is to eat whatever you want without restriction. I’m here to tell you that you actually CAN be mindful about what you put in your face hole while still also having a healthy relationship with food. . I think the confusion arises when we start to label ourselves as bad or good when we eat certain things, or feel guilt. I’m not about that life; what you eat does NOT define you, and you should never feel guilt about your choices. When you understand how food affects your behavior—a topic I talk a lot about—it’s always going to be informed consent. . But perhaps we should also discuss which foods are more supportive of long term satiety, a healthy body composition, and positive nutrient status. . We all know that foods like fresh fruits, veggies, grass fed beef, eggs, and salmon are good for us, and it goes without saying that one meal of these foods isn’t going to do much for your health; it’s about your dietary pattern as a whole. So why can’t we also admit that, while one serving here or there might not do us harm, foods like donuts, fried chicken dishes, sugar sweetened beverages are nonetheless not the best for us? . And the explanation as to why is far from rocket-science 🚀 We get hurt because without changing much in our day-to-day lives, we start running too hard, too fast, too far, and too often. Period. Anatomically, 40-hours per week of desk jockeying is the opposite of running—yet is exactly what our muscles and joints have adapted to and are fit to handle. When we pile on running, suddenly up to 10X our bodyweight is being hammered through our desk-bound posture (what I call our “STACK”) with every step. A far more intelligent training plan for a modern day marathon, which I discuss in detail on last week’s podcast and for another hour on this week’s show, is to commit to and schedule a single “Long Run” every 14-days where you will walk your full EFT — a term I coined for your “expected finish time”. This number is usually between 3:30 and 5-hours and will be the heart of your training program. Your EFT workout will get the body accustomed to being on two feet for the time we expect our marathon to take, as it helps your STACK find itself naturally, and without excessive ground-reaction forces. Overtime, usually by adding 15 minutes of nostril-breathing pace running per outing, you will shift from a mostly walking session to a fully running workout. Carbs get such an unfair bad rep! Sure, no one is saying refined sugar and white bread is healthy. But carbohydrates is a much broader category. Complex carbs are the most micronutrients-dense foods per calorie on the planet. They are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, fiber, and water. I usually hear “carbs make you fat”. Well that’s a loaded statement without much meaning on its own. Simple carbs are easy to overeat and get processed in your body quickly which can lead to overeating them which then can lead to weight gain. However, complex carbs don’t work the same way. The high fiber content in complex carbs keeps you full for longer, slows down digestion as well as slows the absorption of natural sugars. Foods like whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables have all been associated with longevity and disease prevention and they are all complex carbs. It’s the Life in Your Years. How are you living? How do you feel about yourself? What is your inner voice telling you?  Healthy mind = healthy body. Meaning that being confident about yourself and having high self-esteem and feeling good about yourself and not what you look like but who you are is what matters. Usually when you have healthy self-esteem generally your thoughts are going to be positive and with these positive thoughts, youre going to feel good about yourself. I was working with a client in a 1:1 session the other day and they said to me, “well I can’t prep my lunch ahead of time because that would be dieting!”🤔 - There is such a misconception on what intuitive eating actually is. With this client in particular we have worked on making peace with food and honoring their hunger and fullness cues so there is no guilt associated with food and they feel very sure of trusting their body with how much they need. - When I asked the client why this would be dieting… She couldn’t really answer the question.
