🚑 HEALTH UPDATE 🚑 This girl is on the mend from severe neglect. She had a harness tightly secured for 4-6 weeks, eventually causing the harness to get embedded to her skin. After her trip up to MSU she traveled to her forever home at the @greatlakesrabbit this weekend. They have a small potbelly pig population where this lucky girl will spend the rest of her life. Sorry for the snot pic, but I wanted to show you guys, plus he’s still cute even when he wants me to wipe his nasty boogers 😋 It’s never a dull moment here. On top of dealing with JD, now Bubbles is sick. Yesterday starting with some loose poops now this morning he’s got full blown diarrhea and a cough and GROSS nasal discharge. And to answer anyone’s inevitable question, NO I don’t think they’re related. We’ve had JD in strict quarantine since he got to the farm, have been washing hands and changing boots between the two ect. That being said, I guess anything is possible unfortunately. Although JD never had some of these symptoms, who knows🙄 JD’s fecal came back clear for your average intestinal parasites so now today I got a fresh sample because it’s much looser and I’m becoming more worried. I’m going to send out an extensive fecal panel to look for things like salmonella, crypto, ect. We’re going to run a fecal on Bubbles today to rule out parasites. We started him on probiotics and I’m going to talk with the doctors today about which antibiotic we should start and if there’s any additional tests she wants to do. In the meantime, we’re going to put JD on some electrolytes because I’m worried about him becoming dehydrated 🤦🏼‍♀️ Needless to say, today was a very stressful morning, all before heading to my full time job for the day. Und auch innerhalb der Familie ist es wichtig zusammenzuhalten, da wir nicht nur zusammen leben sondern auch arbeiten 💪🏻 Da verschwimmen dann schnell auch mal die Grenzen zwischen Privatem und Betrieblichem, da alles unmittelbar miteinander verknüpft ist. Natürlich ist das manchmal nervig, doch auch gerade in Situationen in denen es finanziell eng war, hatte immer jeder den Erhalt des Hofes im Blick und nicht nur die eigenen Interessen. Wenn es dann ums sparen geht legt sich halt auch mal jeder eine Scheibe Wurst weniger aufs Brot 🙈😅 Ohne diesen Zusammenhalt innerhalb der Familie und bei unseren fleißigen Helfern wäre der betrieb auf unserem Hof kaum möglich. Diese Gemeinschaft und Zusammenhalt machen eben auch das Rückgrat der Landwirtschaft aus. Transparency - a time to be open about something that happened here at Dara, and hopefully a moment of education. On August 1, Portia gave birth to 3 baby boy piglets, on August 10, Daisy Mae gave birth to 4 baby boy piglets and 4 baby girl piglets. A little history, we welcomed Daisy Mae, her husband Wilbur, and their 4 piglets including Portia in November. Daisy Mae gave birth to 9 piglets on January 25. So the father of this present group of piglets was one of the babies from January 25. We were advised by several veterinarians that they can reproduce at 3 months of age. We separated the babies about a week before they turned 3 months. A pregnancy for a pot bellied pig is 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days (115 days). So with those calculations the boys were 75 to 85 days of age when they caused a pregnancy. Moms and babies are all doing amazing. The first 3 boys will be separated from mom this weekend at 2 months. Everyone has their neuters scheduled! Do we wish that this didn’t happen, well yes. But it did, we honestly thought that we were doing everything as we should. The babies are here, and this is where they are supposed to be. Of course, they are not included in any sponsorships, or fundraising as they are our responsibility. Because they are not rescued. We kept it a secret this long because in all honesty, people can be very judgemental. I’m sad to say that most of this judgement has come from within the rescue community, and it has made us feel very nervous to share parts of our life in public. But as the babies have grown, and flourished, we are not going to hide them because of what others think. They are perfect little souls, and we love them so much. If you have visited Dara in the past while and seen the large area in the front of the house that is being fenced in. That will be one large family area for the group next spring. We are a work in progress, and we know we will never be the gold standard of what a sanctuary is supposed to be, and we are ok with that. We are who WE are supposed to be! Meine Patientin von gestern Abend. 🐄 eigentlich wurde ich zu der #Kuh gerufen, da sie augenscheinlich Verdauungsstörungen hatte. Das war auch der Fall, leider hatte sie einen Darmverschluss. Da es ihr schon sehr schlecht ging, der Kreislauf bereits nicht mehr gut war und die Kuh starke Schmerzen hatte entschieden der #Landwirt und ich, sie zu erlösen. 😔 . ➡️ dann schaute ich mir das Euter aber nochmal genauer an. Bei der allgemeinen Untersuchung war es mir bereits aufgefallen, da die Kuh jedoch erst einmal ein anderes, größeres Problem hatte, haben wir uns erst später näher mit dem Euter befasst. Die Zitze und die darüber liegende Haut waren lila verfärbt und mit Luft gefüllt. Erst bei kräftigem ausmassieren des darüber liegenden Gewebes kam ein wenig eitriges Sekret zum Vorschein. Das hatte ich auch noch nicht erlebt (naja doch, einmal bei einem Schaf) 😳 . ℹ️ Da auch ich immer wieder gerne dazu lerne diskutiere ich solche Fälle gerne mal mit Kollegen und die allgemeine Vermutung war, dass diese Veränderungen wahrscheinlich von Clostridien verursacht wurden. Das sind Bakterien, die typische Gasbildner sind. Möglicherweise sind sie durch den Darmverschluss vom Darm ins Blut und von dort ins Euter gelangt. 100% werden wir es wohl nicht mehr rückverfolgen können. Trotzdem mal ein spannender Fall, den man selten sieht! 🤓 auch wenn es sehr schade ist, dass wir für die Kuh nicht mehr tun konnten. Aber wenigstens vom Leiden erlöst! Our very first piggies, Zero and Lulu really enjoy the ac on such hot Texas days!! We researched for a full 2 years before we started looking for our first piggy over eight years ago. We refused to buy from a greeder, and started looking for rescues close by. There weren’t any here, so we looked on Craigslist. That was, sadly, our only option. After having Lulu for two months, we knew she would be happier with someone who spoke piggy too. Back to Craigslist we went to find our Zero boy. We were instantly head over heals in love. A love so deep that we never thought it was possible. We had rescued dogs off the streets independently before we knew the joy of having pigs in your life and wanted to help others feel that same love. That’s when we saw how the need for a rescue here was so desperately needed. The rehoming and abandoning of pigs in Texas was beyond capacity for the one rescue in the state at the time. So many pigs in so many terrible situations that needed a safe place to live and be loved for who they are. HMPR was born! Since then, we’ve rescued and helped hundreds of pigs either directly taking them in or helping to get them a great home. We started getting contacted about other species of sweet souls in need and have brought them into our family as well. We now consider ourselves both a rescue and a farm sanctuary as we are continually giving new types of babies a forever home with all the love, care and respect they each deserve. Who remembers 56 pigs that we rescued? Who knows how long a pig stays pregnant? I did not know😅 4 months. So we bought out pregnant pigs!!! Some of them already delivered and we built them separately spaces, but we raised for my dream pig paradise not much so construction is not happening...😔 Now we are to build it cause now in our care is much more then 56 pigs. Ich esse mit meinem Schwein anstatt mein Schwein zu essen! Provokant vielleicht, vielleicht ist es aber auch notwendig provokant zu sein. Seit gut 20 Jahren bin ich jetzt Vegetarier. Genauso viele Jahre muss ich mir dumme Sprüche anhören. „ Du ist meinem Essen das Essen weg!“ „Bist du ein Kaninchen?“ „Hey Maren willst du noch ein Schnitzel?“ Als wäre das jemals witzig gewesen. War nie witzig. Wird nie witzig sein . Und neuerdings kommt hinzu seitdem Rosalie bei uns wohnt: „man hast du ein dickes Schlachtschwein!“ , „Wann wird denn dein Schwein geschlachtet?“ , „Wann ist denn Schlachtfest?“ Aus Freundlichkeit den anderen gegenüber bin ich meistens still und sage nichts. Manchmal aber würde ich ihnen es gerne an den Kopf knallen. Und zwar alles, was ich weiß über die Produktion von Fleisch, was einhergeht mit der Produktion von Tieren. Allein diese Worte: „die Produktion von Tieren“ hören sich für mich falsch an. Man produziert Gegenstände. Aber das ist vermutlich der springende Punkt. Mensch glaubt, er habe das Recht, so mit den Tieren umzugehen- schließlich sind es ja Nutztiere. Die empfinden offensichtlich nicht und nichts. Ich würde Ihnen gerne sagen was mit den Schweinen gemacht wird, damit sie sterben, wie sie geschlachtet werden, damit sie es als Schnitzel auf dem Teller haben können. Mensch weiß das ja alles nicht mehr. Kommt ja aus der Plastikverpackung. Wenn mich jemand fragt , wann das Schwein geschlachtet wird, antworte ich, dass ich ja meinen Hund auch nicht schlachten werde. Verständnislose Blicke immer wieder- aber Ruhe. Das Schwein ist nun mal als Schwein geboren als Schwein wird man nun mal geschlachtet. Aber was kann denn Rosalie dafür? Was kann Rosalie dafür, dass sie kein Hund geworden ist ? Weshalb darf sie denn kein schönes und gutes und glückliches und langes Leben führen? Ich finde,sie darf das auch als Schwein. Ich finde, es ein großes Problem, das wir der Meinung sind ,Tiere in verschiedene Kategorien einzuteilen . Manchen zu erlauben ein gutes Leben zu führen und andere nach kurzer Zeit zu töten. Es war schon immer so, das ich mich wie magisch zu Tieren hingezogen gefühlt habe. Natürlich nicht im Sinne von Zoophilie- das Ganze spielt sich auf einer anderen Ebene ab. Einer Ebene, bei der man auf gleicher Augenhöhe ist, einfach akzeptiert wird, und zwar ohne vorher beurteilt zu werden. Eine warmherzige und bedingungslose Akzeptanz. Schnurz, ob ich mich besonders schick gemacht habe, einen guten oder schlechten Tag habe, einen good oder badhairday. Es interessiert meine Tiere nicht, was andere Leute von mir denken oder halten, in was für einem Haus ich wohne, wie dieses möbeliert ist und was für ein Auto ich fahre . Es ist ihnen egal, wo und ob ich im Urlaub war, ob mein Rasen kurz oder lang ist, die Auffahrt gefegt und gejätet, oder eben nicht. Alles in allem kann man sagen, jede der Oberflächlichkeiten, welche sehr vielen Menschen die Hauptgesprächsthemen zu sein scheinen, sind ihnen egal. Ich glaube, das ist genau der Casus Knacksus. Deshalb fühle ich mich unter anderem so verbunden mit den, mit den meinen Tieren. Mich interessieren all diese Sachen auch nicht. Jeder soll so leben, wie er mag, sofern er keinem anderen Lebewesen, egal ob Mensch oder Tier, denn da unterscheide ich nicht, Schaden oder Leiden zufügt. Was für mich relevant ist, ist der Charakter eines Menschen und wie er handelt. Bei oberflächlichen Menschen fühle ich mich nicht wohl, da bevorzuge ich wirklich das Zusammensein mit meinen Tieren. Weil sie mir gegenüber wahrhaftig und ehrlich sind. Sie verstellen sich nicht. Sie sind mir gegenüber respektvoll und geben die Liebe zurück, die ich ihnen gebe. Jeder auf seine Art und Weise. Daher versteh ich manchmal auch gar nicht, warum der Mensch sich über den Tieren sieht. Ich für meinen Teil hab mit Rosalie schon schönere Stunden verbracht als mit Hans-Dieter und Ingeborg, deren Hauptgesprächsthema die Liebschaften und neuen Sofagarnituren der Nachbarn sind. Was ich damit sagen will: man sollte sich trauen, mehr echt zu sein. Ruthie and Rita, whom we believe to be sisters, were rescued by the Humane Society from a hoarding/cruelty situation. Shortly after arriving at the Humane Society, both gave birth. The Humane Society didnt have room for two fully grown farm pigs, let alone two fully grown farm pigs and 13 babies, so finding placement for them became urgent or the family would have to be separated when the piglets were just one week old. We didnt want to see that happen, so we volunteered to take them all. We originally intended to adopt some of the babies out to other sanctuaries after weaning, but after seeing how bonded they were to their moms and each other, we decided to let the whole family stay together for the rest of their lives. Sadly one of the babies, Maisie, was found to have a congenital heart deformity and didnt survive. I’m sitting here in bed going through these photos of them on my Instagram and I feel so far away from them now. I want to go back & sit with her, just hold her & cry because I don’t know how to save her You have no idea how it feels going into this darkness, seeing them like this. Scroll back up & really look at her, look at her eyes & her babies...are we really doing this to them? I have literally died inside. I’ll never feel real happiness while they are suffering, I can feel them in my soul every minute of the day, behind every “happy moment” all my jokes & laughs, she’s there. All of them are, sitting so heavy inside my chest. I’ve said this for years & it’s still the same, even though I appear happier now, I’ll never leave the darkness. My friend told me a few months ago that my ex Jessie messaged him while we were together saying “I’ve lost her bro, she’s gone into the darkness from this & she’s not coming back” hearing that really hit me I did mushrooms once to try & release some of this, because seeing a psychologist just doesn’t help, they really just don’t get it. During the trip I was hanging off my bed crying in so much pain, my friend was telling me it’s ok to let go now, that I can’t carry all of this but I can still fight for them. I was crying hysterically saying no into my pillow curled up “I’m staying with them” If I leave the darkness it means I’ve let go of them. I refuse to just get on with my life. That’s why I keep going back If you haven’t been inside & met them like this you will never understand what if feels like. The suffering in the air as you walk toward these sheds. Opening the door & seeing all of them. I can’t smell the night air without thinking of them now There is a real darkness in this world & it’s us, we are doing this to them by choice. We have chosen to be evil, allow the industry to hide them away, package their bodies & feed us lies. I refuse to let them win. This needs to end. I don’t know why anyone would be ok with paying for this to happen to someone else. This is her life, this is her soul, her body. Who are we to do this. Eggsy Benedict (yes that’s the goats name) came down with Urinary Calculi last Sunday. It was bad guys. I thought he was going to die. I even said goodbye to him before the vet got to the farm in case we couldn’t help him. BUT thank God for our farm vet (love him!) and that I caught it early enough. We treated with Ammonil pills and it slowly dissolved the blockage and I finally saw him pee like normal yesterday! I’ve never been so happy to see an animal pee. I’ll talk all about the experience in a few weeks on the @drinkandfarm podcast. I’m still keeping a very close eye on Eggsy while he regains his energy and appetite. Feeling grateful that he’s still with us and thankful for gaining the experience of dealing with this issue. - @chickens.and.wine on Instagram

Gestern ist wieder ein kleines Bullenkälbchen bei uns geboren 👶 Viele Fragen uns dann, was mit dem Kälbchen später passiert - denn es kann ja keine Milch geben. Fakt ist: Wir werden das Kälbchen irgendwann verkaufen und es wird für die Mast aufgezogen. Natürlich finden wir es auch immer sehr schade, wenn wir die Kälbchen verkaufen, denn wir stecken immer sehr viel Mühe und Energie in deren Aufzucht ❤️❤️ Deshalb sollte sich jeder immer darüber bewusst sein, das hinter jedem Stück Fleisch einmal ein Lebewesen stand. Egal ob Rind, Schwein oder Huhn 🥩 🐮 Bei den perfekt abgepackten Portionen, die man im Supermarkt aus der Kühltruhe kaufen kann, wird das oft und gerne schnell vergessen oder ignoriert, da es doch eine unbequeme Wahrheit ist. Und auch beim Restaurantbesuch sollte man sich darüber bewusst sein, dass nicht alle Tiere nur aus Schnitzel und Steak bestehen und dass das Fleisch oft auch aus dem Ausland eingeführt wird 🌍 Ihr könnt heute mit eurer Kaufentscheidung darüber entscheiden wie die Landwirtschaft der Zukunft aussehen wird und wie mit den kleinen Bullenkälbchen umgegangen wird. Hamilton and Fernando are the best of buds. Last night I assisted three fellow activists in the rescuing of three piglets in Melbourne. They were bought for a Melbourne Cup party and made to race and were then destined to end up on somebodies plate. We suspect that they have severe sunburn or mange due to the condition of their skin. And they all currently have ear infections and worms which can now be treated.
