Although we’re all trying to pass this COVID crisis the best we can (the conditions and grade of confinement are very different at each region of the world and that makes easier or much harder) to get back to normality as fast as possible, maybe what we knew as normal it will not be anymore. And maybe that’s not a bad thing. I don’t know. I think the hardest thing about all of it, after the human loss, is the uncertainty. We like to know what will happen tomorrow, we live in the security of routines and this loss of certainty makes many of us wonder how will be the tomorrow. Will we recover our jobs? BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) has arrested a total of 87 people connected to the growing Employment Development Department (EDD) identity theft and fraud scandal. Police initially arested 47 people last week but that number has now nearly doubled. Detectives revealed that they recovered 181 fraudulent EDD cards valued over $3.6 million. They also found another $466,000 in cash and seven handguns. Authorities stated that most of the suspects aren’t from California. Investigators allege that they were able to access the EDD website and apply for unemployment under someone else’s name; primarily people who are deceased, elderly in nursing homes or in jail. “Shoes, clothing, purses. Anything of high dollar value they were spending on EDD cards,” said Beverly Hills Police Department Lt. Max Subin. “Eighty percent of the arrestees were from out of state, and they were renting Airbnb’s and renting high end cars.” EDD just announced a two-week reset period — halting all new unemployment claims and further designated to process claimant payments faster, reduce fraud, and tackle backlog issues. A new identification verification process will be implemented in which applicants will have to upload their ID and a selfie. The BHPD said they are working with the FBI and the Department of Labor in regards to the wide scope of the fraud. The suspected arrested did not have any weapons on them and were booked for identity theft. However, since it is a nonviolent offense and there is no bail due to COVID-19, they were released. Advanced respiratory monitoring in COVID-19 patients: use less PEEP! . . . Discussion: We demonstrate that mechanically ventilated patientswith COVID-19 have a relatively high lung compliance, high dead space ventilation, and gas exchange impairment. In almost all patients, lung compliance decreased and dead space ventilation increased with increasing PEEP levels. The decrease in lung compliance and increase in dead space ventilation in response to higher PEEP levels indicate that COVID-19 lesions were not recruited and that higher PEEP levels cause hyperinflation of the more compliant parts of the lung [1]. These results are in accordance with recent findings in COVID-19 patients [2]. When lung compliance increases in response to higher PEEP levels (patient 1), recruitment is likely and PEEP should be set accordingly [1, 2]. All patients responded extremely well to prone positioning, although the exact mechanism is unclear. Redistribution of blood flow seems to be an important mechanism. In conclusion, we show that higher PEEP levels de-crease lung compliance and in most cases increase dead space ventilation, indicating that high PEEP levels probably cause hyperinflation in patients with COVID-19. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. LIVONIA, Mich. (FOX 2) - The US-Canadian border has been closed for almost seven months and the closed border has meant many people have been unable to visit terminally ill patients on the other side of the international boundary. . In early September, we met Marilyn and Norman Hodgkiss who have been fighting to visit their adult daughter before its too late. Diane Costello, 53, is in hospice care for colorectal cancer. . The Hodgkiss family was prevented by Canadian law from crossing the border which was closed in March due to the coronavirus and has been extended very month since. Id just like to be able to physically be with her. Just a couple hours, Marilyn said in early September. After our story with the Livonia family aired, the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) picked up our story. They were hoping for a small miracle. Then it happened - they got a special exception from the Canadian government allowing them to visit their daughter. I cried and cried and cried I was so happy, Marily said. The exemption giving by the Canadian government, allowing Marilyn and Norman to visit the daughter. The smile stayed on her face for the longest time, Marilyn said. Although there is no expiration for the exemption, they were able to spend a week with her. They could only be at hospice and to their granddaughters house, and they had to wear masks. But that was enough. Under the circumstances its sad. Its really sad, Marilyn and Norman both said. Marilyn got choked up describing her daughters condition, leaving it to her granddaughter, Shayla. Shes joking around when she can. Shes still laughing. Were trying to keep the conversation light and just enjoying the time we have left, Shayla said. After our conversation, they made a quick trip to hospice for what could be the last time. Then they came back to Livonia. They are trying to get advocate groups, for compassion for people in this situation like us- from both sides. A second, more accurate test has confirmed that Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (@govparsonmo) has COVID-19, the governor’s office said Thursday. The 65-year-old Republican is not showing any symptoms, but is isolating in the Governor’s Mansion for at least the next 10 days while his wife, Teresa, 67, is quarantining at their home in Bolivar. “At this time, Governor Parson feels healthy, and the First Ladys symptoms remain mild,” a statement from the office said. Although office and campaign aides said the quarantine would not affect Parson’s ability to do his job, it came as the former sheriff has worked to turn the focus of his election bid away from the pandemic and toward law and order. Parson has faced criticism for not issuing tougher requirements — such as a statewide mask mandate — in response to the spread of the potentially deadly virus. His once daily briefings on the coronavirus have been pared down to once per week. And, in July, he brought lawmakers back for a special session on violent crime that resulted in two new laws. Last month, I started working with Project Rethink, a representative group of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and persons with disabilities from the UCB community. Our goal of tasking UCB to become a more inclusive place seemed quite simple, though at times the work has been pretty overwhelming...sometimes I want to give up. But I want to leave the place better than I found it. So for now, hardheaded I shall remain. October is ADHD Awareness Month. Coincidentally I have my first appointment today in over 6 months due to Covid after being diagnosed in Jan. Link to more info on ADHD in my biog. ***PLEASE READ IT*** If I had a quid for someone who has said to me they have ADHD. 🙄. Trust me; you would get something done about it. I first went to my GP in 2012 and I was diagnosed in 2020. Private is obviously quicker but effing expensive. I wouldn’t take my ADHD away though for all the money in the world because coupled with my personality - it’s traits has enabled me to have certain ‘superpowers’ - playing piano for 6 hours straight and obtaining grade 8 piano, grade 7 flute; 12 GCSEs; 4 A Levels; a degree in Psycholinguistics at Kings and extremely high coping mechanisms; but it is a disability and trust me - it comes with a lot of problems that is hard to understand what is happening to you - or why you feel different from everyone else (I have since I was in nursery - yes I can remember that far back - I remember being in a pram, my first dream, my 3rd birthday, seeing my first reflection - all these are examples of superpowers!) But I have been abused because of peoples ignorance to ADHD. That’s a strong word to hear and quite a difficult thing to accept when a medical professional explains to me that this is what has happened to me. Im still very angry at a lot of people out there who have been these abusers; and I have a right to be; but instead of the old Mickey’s reaction which would blow up - instead I have a new quiet power where I will dump you out with the rest of my rubbish and it feels great. I don’t miss them but I know they’ll miss me haha! Please be aware of what ADHD is for adults. This is GREAT news. 👏 Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that his government will provide over $7 million over five years to support victims and survivors of human trafficking. Ford said Ontario will give $7.65 million to frontline victims services organizations for specialized services to support human trafficking victims. According to the province, a portion of this funding will be directed to Victim Services Toronto, Victim Services of York Region and the province’s other Victim Crisis Assistance Ontario organizations. “Through our government’s anti-human trafficking strategy, we are helping young women and children escape a living nightmare and rebuild their lives,” Ford said. “We will continue to work with police to give them the tools and resources they need to go after the thugs responsible for this disgusting crime and put them behind bars where they belong.” Some of the funding will be given to the Victim Quick Response Program+ to help human trafficking survivors cover essential expenses, like accommodation, meals, transportation, dental care, mobile phones and tattoo removal. The funding will also go towards enhanced services under Victim Crisis Assistance Ontario to enable frontline staff across Ontario to address the needs of human trafficking survivors, particularly children and Indigenous persons. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 👉 @indiatimesinsta 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. . A private laboratory based in Keralas Valanchery has allegedly been conducting a large-scale fraud by issuing false COVID-19 negative certificates to people. According to the Times of India, Arma Laboratory, a franchise of a laboratory-based out of Kozhikode, has fraudulently amassed more than Rs 45 lakh through the scam. The Kerala Polices investigations so far have revealed that it collected swab samples from as many as 2,500 people, while only 496 of those samples were sent to the parent laboratory in Kozhikode. The rest of the people whose samples were not sent to the parent laboratory were instead issued fake COVID-19 negative certificates. The other violation by Arma lab was that it was not authorised to collect samples and send them to Kozhikode based lab for testing. The lab also destroyed samples for which the COVID-19 negative certificates were issued. We have seized the computers from Arma lab after receiving complaints about the issue of fake COVID-19 test certificates. We found that the data from the computers was deleted. We were able to retrieve the data with the help of cyber cell and came to know the lab collected 2,500 samples. When we checked with the Kozhikode based lab, they said the lab received only 496 samples. We also came to know that Arma lab officials issued fake COVID-19 negative certificates from untested samples, the report quoted MK Shaji, Inspector, Valanchery police station. This gains significance as Kerala has emerged as one of the worst affected states in the country. As per the state government’s dashboard, it has so far discovered a total of 1,87,276 positive cases, of which as many as 61,791 remain active cases. Following the brutal rape of a 19 year old girl, Womens rights activists on Wednesday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government for cremating the body the of the gang-rape victim in the dead of night without her familys consent. The woman was allegedly raped at a village in Hathras by four men on September 14, and she breathed her last on Tuesday at Delhis Safdarjung hospital. Her body was cremated in the early hours of Wednesday, with her family alleging the local police forced them to conduct the last rites in the dead of the night. Local police officers, however, told PTI the cremation was carried out as per the wishes of the family.The Women’s rights activists called the whole incident appalling and shocking. The majority of the Fresno City Council decided Thursday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom to ask for permission to open indoor dining, and effectively killed a proposed approach to allow all businesses to open citywide. The letter’s supporters said it was the best way to work within the system and safely open restaurants and other businesses that are restricted under orders related to the coronavirus. The letter got a 5-2 approval from the council. Many businesses closed in March after local and state orders in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Insiden dialami wanita berusia 40-an itu terjadi apabila batang ujian calitan berkenaan menusuk dasar kepalanya sehingga menyaksikan bendalir cerebrospinal keluar dari hidung, sekali gus menyebabkan dia kini berdepan risiko jangkitan otak. Penelitian awal mendapati proses saringan yang dijalankan terhadap perempuan itu berkemungkinan tidak dijalankan dengan betul, namun pakar berpendapat insiden sedemikian jarang berlaku dan risiko sebarang komplikasi daripada ujian calitan kekal rendah. Pakar Otolaringologi-Kepala dan Pembedahan Leher dari University of Iowa Hospital, Jarrett Walsh, berkata petugas perkhidmatan kesihatan profesional sewajarnya mengambil langkah berhati-hati ketika menjalankan ujian saringan terhadap pesakit. Sehubungan itu, katanya, individu yang mempunyai masalah sinus atau pernah menjalani pembedahan dasar kerangka otak sepatutnya memilih untuk mendapatkan saringan secara oral. Wanita berkenaan pernah menjalani pembedahan hernia elektif, sebelum dikatakan mengambil ujian calitan di bahagian dalam rongga hidung. Dia kemudian sedar bahawa suatu bendalir tidak berwarna mengalir keluar dari salah satu rongga hidungnya. Selepas itu, dia mengadu mengalami sakit kepala, muntah, ketegangan di bahagian leher dan alah pada cahaya, sebelum ditempatkan di wad untuk menerima rawatan lanjut di bawah jagaan saya. Ujian calitan ini bukan perkara baharu baginya kerana dia pernah menjalani sebelum ini dan dibuat pada belah rongga hidung yang sama, malah tiada masalah. Cuma mungkin ujian kali kedua ini tidak dijalankan mengikut teknik terbaik dan batang ujian calitan dimasukkan terlebih dalam, katanya. Хорошие мысли приходят в голову сразу нескольким людям, а вселенная помогает им найти друг друга. ⠀ Ещё в конце марта мне пришла в голову мысль, что сейчас в Векторе во многом творится история. Ведётся работа над вакциной, разрабатываются тест системы. Мне захотелось запечатлеть эту работу, ее героев. Я предпринял определенные попытки согласовать такую съемку через те контакты что были у меня. Но безуспешно. Спустя неделю Марина Аксенова, директор фонда @sgdeti (я частенько выступаю в роли фотоволонтера фонда) дала мой контакт Юлии Зимовой из @onf_front и у меня раздался звонок: Антон, а вы в Векторе поснимать не хотите?. Конечно ответил я )))) Так для меня и начался этот проект. Потом были ещё волонтеры, врачи, скорая помощь.. но обо всем по порядку ) ⠀ В общем так я попал в Вектор. Кстати - когда то давно это мое первое место работы по специальности биофизика😅 Снимать было интересно ) Увидел героев научного фронта - тех кто создаёт тест системы, изучает вирус, создаёт вакцину. Времени было совсем немного, но вроде есть предварительная договоренность что позже вернусь туда ещё. Отдельная история - вот эти синие костюмы. Это максимальная степень защиты. Всего через пару минут ребята что надевали их покрылись крупными каплями пота. In fact, Ernie follows up his joke by suggesting he’s actually killed more than one person. “But doesn’t wearing a mask take away PPE from our healthcare workers?” The answer is no. Let us tell you why. Until today (April 3rd), this model of masks was not even allowed to be used by healthcare professionals. Our nonprofit was almost over before it started. We didn’t want to take from healthcare workers but also felt it was extremely important that people were able to wear masks in grocery stores everywhere. Mindful of this, we did as much research as possible. We found that the FDA approving the KN95 mask for medical use didn’t mean that every KN95 mask was approved. The masks that we import aren’t made in a factory certified by the FDA. Therefore, it will not take away from medical PPE supply chains. In fact, there are billions of these masks already. It’s the most readily available mask in the world. They’re just not commonly used in the Western Hemisphere. We need to take quarantine a little more seriously and masking up for every grocery store trip is how. Dr. Fauci, the head of our infectious disease task force stated the other night that quarantine could last until we get a vaccine approved. He then said a vaccine could take 12 to 18 months best case scenario. Imagine.. this would be devastating for so many. We have to find a way to make our quarantine effective. Every grocery store customer should be wearing masks and every grocery store employee should be wearing PPE. Hundreds of thousands of people have been given two Chinese COVID-19 vaccine candidates as part of an emergency program, without a single case of infection or adverse effects, a senior official of a state-owned vaccine developer has said. The two vaccines, developed by China National Biotec Group (CNBG), are expected to enter the market as soon as this December, and two shots will cost less than 1,000 yuan (about 146 U.S. dollars), said Zhou Song, the companys general legal counsel. They are still undergoing phase three trials for safety and efficacy - usually the last step before regulatory approval - in more than 10 other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Peru, Morocco, Argentina, and Jordan, since the epidemic has been basically put under control in China. The two vaccine candidates, together with another one developed by Beijing-based Sinovac, have been approved for civilian emergency use after reliable results in phase one and phase two trials. Tens of thousands of people vaccinated have traveled to countries and regions with high risks of COVID-19. No one has been infected so far, and this proved the effectiveness of the vaccines, Zhou said. How long does it take to generate antibodies after one gets vaccinated? Clinical trial results showed that individuals who received two doses of CNBGs inactivated vaccine at an interval of two to four weeks, usually started to generate antibodies seven days after the first shot, and all have neutralizing antibodies 28 days after the second shot, Zhou said. ***How long will the immunity last?*** The vaccines could protect an individual against the novel coronavirus for one to three years, based on the results of animal experiments, phase one and phase two trials, and similar vaccines using similar technology, according to Zhou We have kept monitoring the first 180 volunteers, who received the vaccines more than five months ago, and found the levels of the antibodies for the coronavirus are still stabilizing at the peak, and there is no sign of them dropping, he said. A doctor in Athens has taken to social media to challenge defiers of mask-wearing and coronavirus deniers. Ordinary glass panels can act as solar panels when a layer of nanoparticles is sandwiched between two panes. This could help us take advantage of solar energy in cities where space for solar panels may be limited. . “If we’ve done our job, no one will even know that they’re there,” says Hunter McDaniel at UbiQD, a materials manufacturing firm in the US. He and his colleagues have developed transparent solar panels that are indistinguishable from regular glass. . Test installations, involving panels that are 1 square metre in size, are under way in buildings in the US and the Netherlands. The panels have a power conversion efficiency of 3.6 per cent, a measure of how much sunlight is converted into electricity. Opaque solar panels, in comparison, have efficiencies between 15 and 20 per cent. . These transparent panels are made from two layers of glass glued together with a polymer that contains nanoparticles known as quantum dots. With a core of copper indium sulphide and a shell of zinc sulphide, these quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that can manipulate light. . When the nanoparticles are excited by exposure to UV light, they release photons that travel along the transparent panel towards its edge. The perimeter is fitted with solar cells, which convert the photons into electrical current. With a spike of 82,170 coronavirus cases and 1,039 deaths in 24 hours, Indias tally on Monday breached the 60 lakh-mark with a total of 60,74,702 cases. Out of these, 9,62,640 are currently active whereas the number of discharged cases stands at 50,16,520. While 95,542 lost the battle against the viral disease. On July 17, India had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh on August 7. The country added another 10 lakh on August 23 and went past 40 lakh on September 5. In 11 days, it added another 10 lakh cases, amounting to 50 lakh cases. Twelve days later the tally has mounted to 60 lakh.
