Mayor Gary Christenson is urging every Malden resident to complete their 2020 census as soon as possible. “Time is of the essence,” said Mayor Christenson, “it is imperative that we count every Malden resident as crucial resources for our community and families are at stake.” Late last week, a District Court in Northern California issued an order that extends the census deadline to October 31st. The Trump administration has appealed this decision. As we cannot know how quickly the appeal will be resolved, the last day that the census may be completed is unclear. In a U.S. District Court in Northern California, the National Urban League filed suit against the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Census Bureau for their August 13th issued Covid-19 “Replan” that shortens the deadline for collection of census data from October 31 to September 30. The Court ordered the Defendants to produce the administrative record which led to the operational decision to shorten the window by the next hearing scheduled for September 17. As Defendants failed to comply, the hearing date was continued, and late on September 24th the deadline was extended to October 31. Last fall, Mayor Christenson commissioned Alex Pratt of the Malden Redevelopment Authority and Kathleen Manning Hall from his office to establish Malden’s Complete Count Committee. They met every week to strategize and worked to organize a group comprised of city departments, residents, non-profit organizations, houses of worship and residents. The Committee began meeting weekly in January to strategize and plan events and then COVID hit shutting down all planned activities. Since regrouping in July, the Committee has worked hard to improve Malden’s completion numbers although not in the manner they originally planned - they needed to rethink efforts and strategies. Working with Marcia Marques, Field Division of the U.S. Census Bureau, the Committee has held many Mobile Questionnaire Assistance (MQA) events outdoors at supermarkets, elderly housing buildings, the YMCA, parks, and school lunch pickup sites. Additionally, with grant funds obtained from the state, they have hired Archipelago Strategies Group (A - @cityofmalden on Instagram

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the employees of the Church Street Station Post Office, located adjacent to the South Tower, were busy at work inside the building. The Church Street post office was responsible for collecting, delivering, and processing mail from the World Trade Center buildings. As usual, window clerks were serving a steady stream of customers. Letter carriers, who typically began their rounds inside the Centers buildings at 10:00 am, were organizing the day’s mail deliveries. . Once the first plane hit, a station supervisor and her safety officers sped through the building, escorting employees and customers outside and securing the post office vaults. No one in the Church Street Post Office was hurt, as the building had been successfully evacuated by the time the South tower fell just after 10:00 am. Although badly damaged, the Post Office was still standing. . After the September 11th attacks, the National Postal Museum accessioned into its collection several items from the Church Street Station Post Office. Objects included a damaged collection box from the street outside the post office, a beat-up mail satchel cart used for deliveries in the World Trade Center complex, and register receipt tape dated 9/11/01 8:47am. . The final photograph shows US Postal Inspectors, aided by the National Guard and local police, loading up mail salvaged from the Church Street post office. The mail was taken by truck to a post office at 33rd street, also known as the Farley building, for processing. It was here that New Yorkers stood in lines that weaved around the building, divided by ZIP code, to get their mail for weeks following the attacks. #911 #September11 #USPS #PostOffice - @nationalpostalmuseum on Instagram

Celebrating Windrush Day! On 22nd June 1948 the Empire Windrush Ship full of Caribbeans docked in Essex. It was just after World War 2 and the UK was a mess so the government brought them over to help restore the economy, and build the NHS. These West Indians had a vibrance and proudness about them as they stepped off the Empire Windrush. Full of hope of creating a better life and enthusiasm to make a real contribution to the UK. Little did they realise they’d be turned away from accommodation and jobs due to the colour of their skin. Banned from social venues. No blacks, no dogs, no Irish! Terrible living conditions with whole families squeezing into one damp room. Faced relentlessly with racial slurs, violent attacks, disappointment and completely unfair circumstances everyday. Through perseverance and resilience they became integral in rebuilding the UK. They were the beginning of the Black British culture we know and love. The contribution is endless from food, to music, to sports and language! They undoubtedly helped to shape the country into what it is today. Certainly every person I know has been touched or influenced by black culture in some way. Imagine after being invited and creating a whole life here, being told by immigration, sixty years later that you will be deported back ‘home’. Imagine being told you can no longer have the right to work and being forced into poverty and losing your home. Imagine being charged over £50k for cancer treatment after decades of paying UK tax. Imagine being thrown into a detention centre because the government conveniently destroyed thousands of landing cards. Imagine being wrongly separated from your partner, children, other family and friends to be sent back to a country you haven’t seen since you were a child. So whilst I feel so immensely proud when I see West Indians arriving in the UK looking sharp in their ‘Sunday Best’, with glistening, freshly creamed faces and perfectly styled hair, I can’t help feel a bitter sweet moment. If only they knew then what we do now... Windrush family, thank you for paving the way for us! 🤎🖤 #windrushday #empirewindrush #windrush2020 #kimartee #artbykimsmyers - @kim_art_ee on Instagram

A couple of years ago I submitted a “design proposal” to the United States Postal Service suggesting that they replace the slogan “We Deliver For You”—visible on all their vehicles—with “On Any Block.” Despite co-sign from 2 Milly, this idea was not acknowledged, but the sentiment of the message remains. In case you haven’t heard, the Trump administration is threatening to privatize the USPS due to deficits (even though its financial troubles stem largely from a legal tweak made by Republicans in 2006). However, the postal service is not a business opportunity; it’s a civic institution and basic social service understood since its creation (over 200 years ago) to be foundational to a democratic society. Don’t get played by the neoliberal agenda. Access to an affordable, publicly-owned communication network is the least the government should be providing you, especially in the throes of a mismanaged pandemic when citizens are relying on the mail more than ever. @ohmiamore created this incredible series of graphics to explain why and how to help save the USPS & she got me this Snoopy T. 💌 - @isabelflower on Instagram

The USPS is in DEEP SHIT and needs our help. Ever since our dopesident installed one of his cronies #LouisDejoy as Postmaster General in June, our mail is no longer getting delivered promptly/at all. This is a concerted effort to undermine our trust in the USPS and the use of mail-in ballots this November. My own business has had thousands of dollars of product just go missing or take 5 weeks to arrive (when it normally takes 2-3 days). We love our mailmen, we love the post office: so we must keep it alive at all costs!!!! Our election (and our businesses) depends on it. Short of becoming a postman like @charlesrsmith, YOU TOO CAN HELP! Buy a couple sheets of stamps and send a letter to your grandmother! If you don’t have one, become penpals with an inmate like @xenomania, write to a lovely elder in a nursing home, or send postcards to undecided voters like @ruthieabel.
