The United Nations has classified Samoa as an economically developing country since 2014. Garden City Company Fourth in this series by Suzie Alvey. It features the next developer of Garden City. After Garden Citys founder, Alexander Turney Stewart passed away in 1876, Cornelia Clinch Stewart, his widow, continued his goal of turning it into a planned community. She died in 1886. The Stewarts had no children, so her heirs were on her brother, James J. Clinchs side and her three half sisters side: Emma, Julia and Louise Clinch, as well as Henry Hilton, her lawyer. Her relatives inherited property in New York City and about 7,500 square acres of the Hempstead Plains, including our nascent town, with a value at the time of $2,500,000. It would equal $70 million in cash today. However, factoring in the value of real estate in New York City and those 7,500 square acres now, it would be worth much more in 2020, probably in the billions. Cornelias relatives formed the Garden City Company in 1893 to continue our towns development. 5,000 acres east of Clinton Road out to Bethpage were empty. The land was divided and incorporated as the Hempstead Plains Company and The Merillon Estates. The remaining 2,600 acres west of Clinton Road and east of Old Garden City became the Eastern Section under the Garden City Company. The officers and directors of the Garden City Company were Charles Clinch, James Clinch Smith, Devereux Emmet, Frank Sayre Osborne, Stanford White, Maxwell Butler, Horace Russell and Allen Evarts. These names are recognizable to residents: Clinch Avenue and Stewart Avenue were named after Cornelia Clinch Stewart and Alexander Turney Stewart, of course. Cunanan to the hotel after they found a pawn shop ticket in the red pickup truck, which was found parked in a garage near Versaces mansion after his murder (13th and Collins Ave.). Cunanan had signed his real name and given the address of the Normandy Hotel (currently Ocean Surf Hotel) in North Beach when he pawned a gold coin days before the killing Gianni Versace. But he gave a room number, 205, where he never stayed. The room belonged to Holston. When police arrived, they found him, not Cunanan, in Room 205. Holston says he has no clue why Cunanan would have put his room number on the pawn ticket. The revelation that their quiet guest was linked to five murders and was the subject of one of the countrys biggest manhunts has left the people at the Normandy rattled, according to hotel owner James Roger Falin. During the days after police arrived at the hotel, Falin even kept a pistol in a drawer behind the desk.
