To cushion our fragile glass jars of jam in transit, we use packing peanuts that are made from renewable starch. They are 100% compostable, biodegradable, and in fact are water soluble. They are not styrofoam! You can dispose of them in your green bin or your compost pile. We have always stamped this information on the outside of every shipping box, and I’ve recently added this information to our order confirmation email. Hopefully this will help increase the likelihood of these starch peanuts getting composted and reduce the unnecessarily angry emails yelling at us about shipping styrofoam. Stop 6 – Peckham Peace Wall - community art Following the 2011 protests over the death of Mark Dugan theatre company ‘Peckham Shed’ alongside thousands of south easterners put up temporary post it notes of love and respect for Peckham on boarded up windows of a local Poundland. Members of the public were anxious not to lose this unique record of the publics thoughts and emotional response to what had happened within their town centre. This permanent public artwork has been developed as a creative response to a public consultation, led by young people from The Challenge Society working with Peckham Shed, which asked members of the public in Peckham what they would like to see happen to the original Peckham Peace Wall and for their thoughts about how best it should be preserved. I’ve got a couple of announcements and acknowledgments coming up, but today I want to give a big shout-out to the men and women of the USPS, without whom a booming little business like Fringe Supply Co might never have existed. We have mailed thousands upon thousands of orders since November 2012, every one of them via @usps.official. They’ve made it easy for us, afforable for our customers to get things quickly, and above all, reliable: I can count on one hand the number of those packages that didn’t make it safely to their destination. Not only that, our collections driver Chris — who came every day in the big truck to collect our load of outgoing packages — and our neighborhood mail carrier, Emmanuel, are two of the nicest guys you could ever hope to work with, always accessible to us and eager to help in any way they could. My once-daily visits with each of them are part of what I already miss about life at Fringe HQ since quarantine, and I’m so grateful to them both, plus alternates Eddie, Brittany and others. The Postal Service is a critical piece of U.S. life and infrastructure and should never be played politics with or treated as dispensable. Yellow Belly by Omnipollo, Sweden – Imperial stout brewed with aromas of peanut and biscuit, 11% ABV. Cellared for a couple years. Makes for a nice dessert, but I can’t really recognize the peanut and biscuit aromas. It tastes more like liquid dark chocolate pudding with vanilla sauce. Medium to big mouthfeel with a soft sweetness, medium+ bitterness and light acidity. Lots of vanilla and chocolate aroma and a light alcohol sting. Flavours of sweet, lightly salty black licorice, the bitterness, sweetness and velvety mouthfeel you get in a dark chocolate pudding with vanilla sauce, dark roasted coffee, charred raisins, salmiak, bittering hops, grassy bitterness, resin, dandelions, nut syrup and a light alcohol sting, even after a few years in the cellar. US postage stamp. Scott #2838h (1994) World War II - Road to Victory Red Ball Express By August 1944, it was clear the Normandy invasion had been a huge success. Pursuing quickly retreating Germans, the Allied troops had come within 100 miles of Paris. However, the armies faced one basic problem - they had outrun the supply lines linking them to the Normandy beaches. Unless the Allies could bridge the gap separating the supplies in Normandy and the troops, the Germans would have a chance to regroup and Paris would be lost. The solution was the Red Ball Express. Given the railroad nickname for a high-priority shipment, this long-haul supply system operated over a one-way set of roads to deliver bulk supplies each day to Patton’s and Hodges’ Armies. When the express began on August 25th, it provided 75 tons of supplies per day. As the pursuit continued, the effort was expanded to include 5,400 trucks carrying over 8,200 tons each day over round-trip routes of up to 686 miles. By mid-November the critical need for emergency long-haul operations across northern France was over, and the service was disbanded on November 16, 1944. The first time I got a letter delivered to me by the #USPS I was in the first grade. I had a pen pal and her name was Georgia and she was from Michigan and right after I wondered where the heck Michigan was, I remember thinking that I would tell her all my secrets. So of course, me being me, I poured everything in my brain onto that piece of paper. I wrote about how much I loved being a big sister, how much I loved my brand new red velvet Hilary Duff sweat suit, and how much I loved Steven — my first elementary school crush. When Georgia got a puppy she sent me a photo of it. That was the last time we corresponded, but I never forgot how much joy was leaping off the page. The sloppy exclamation points and misspelled words felt like home to me. I think there was something about the ritual of it all — it opened my eyes to how big the world was. How someone in Michigan who I had never met before and someone like me were one in the same. Now the USPS is in danger, and the world is changing right before our eyes and my heart really hurts for it. We can’t go down without a fight. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the employees of the Church Street Station Post Office, located adjacent to the South Tower, were busy at work inside the building. The Church Street post office was responsible for collecting, delivering, and processing mail from the World Trade Center buildings. As usual, window clerks were serving a steady stream of customers. Letter carriers, who typically began their rounds inside the Centers buildings at 10:00 am, were organizing the day’s mail deliveries. . Once the first plane hit, a station supervisor and her safety officers sped through the building, escorting employees and customers outside and securing the post office vaults. No one in the Church Street Post Office was hurt, as the building had been successfully evacuated by the time the South tower fell just after 10:00 am. Although badly damaged, the Post Office was still standing. . After the September 11th attacks, the National Postal Museum accessioned into its collection several items from the Church Street Station Post Office. Objects included a damaged collection box from the street outside the post office, a beat-up mail satchel cart used for deliveries in the World Trade Center complex, and register receipt tape dated 9/11/01 8:47am. . The final photograph shows US Postal Inspectors, aided by the National Guard and local police, loading up mail salvaged from the Church Street post office. The mail was taken by truck to a post office at 33rd street, also known as the Farley building, for processing. The USPS is in DEEP SHIT and needs our help. Ever since our dopesident installed one of his cronies #LouisDejoy as Postmaster General in June, our mail is no longer getting delivered promptly/at all. This is a concerted effort to undermine our trust in the USPS and the use of mail-in ballots this November. My own business has had thousands of dollars of product just go missing or take 5 weeks to arrive (when it normally takes 2-3 days). We love our mailmen, we love the post office: so we must keep it alive at all costs!!!! Our election (and our businesses) depends on it. Short of becoming a postman like @charlesrsmith, YOU TOO CAN HELP! Buy a couple sheets of stamps and send a letter to your grandmother! A couple of years ago I submitted a “design proposal” to the United States Postal Service suggesting that they replace the slogan “We Deliver For You”—visible on all their vehicles—with “On Any Block.” Despite co-sign from 2 Milly, this idea was not acknowledged, but the sentiment of the message remains. In case you haven’t heard, the Trump administration is threatening to privatize the USPS due to deficits (even though its financial troubles stem largely from a legal tweak made by Republicans in 2006). However, the postal service is not a business opportunity; it’s a civic institution and basic social service understood since its creation (over 200 years ago) to be foundational to a democratic society. Don’t get played by the neoliberal agenda.
