Hot, sticky and uncomfortable: the lead-up to Australias monsoon season is usually the time northerners tend to go a bit troppo! When an active monsoon arrives, the sky is filled with dark clouds and we see widespread rain showers and thunderstorms. These can last for a few days or even a week or more. The cooling, refreshing rains of the monsoon provide welcome change from the build-up and herald the annual transformation from a dry, brown landscape to a lush, watery oasis. Its these monsoonal rains that deliver the vast majority of the annual rainfall across most of tropical northern Australia. The official onset of the monsoon doesnt occur on a set calendar date. It is determined by the weather conditions specific to Darwin. Last wet season, the monsoon onset occurred later than average on January 18, 2020. Australia is currently on a La Niña ALERT. This means there is around three times greater likelihood than usual of a La Niña forming in 2020. 🌧⚡The Might of Thunderbird⚡🌧 Last nights massive thunder and lightning show over the Salish Sea. From where I stood, I could see electrical storms up and down the whole coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria to Comox. . I dropped what I was doing and went to check out this rare sight along the southern coast of BC. What a treat! At this point I was dry and getting eaten alive by giant mosquitos. There were only scattered clouds above my head but I soon realized the storm was heading towards the mainland so I packed up and took off as fast as I could. It took about an hour before it crossed the sea and engulfed Vancouver. Looking over mud flats and the Iona Jetty towards Nanaimo. A few of you have asked about my situation here in Florida relative to #HurricaneDorian however, Ive mostly been off the Instawebs. ⁠⠀ Thankfully, our greater SW Florida SRQ/Tampa area has been spared impact. It is also looking good for most of Floridas east coast to be spared as well, since many early models had estimated far greater impact. ⁠⠀ Like most of Florida, its been a hold your breath holiday weekend. And like many, Ive been keeping a close eye on Dorian. The bolts were really popping hard on this night, but because theres so much rain (rain that gets smoothed out over a 25 second exposure) there isnt much light reflection off the water. The light reflection is being (mostly) diffused by the rain. Had there been no rain between me and the bolts, I couldve lessened my time exposure and improved my reflection. The different and changing environments force us to constantly adjust our settings for capturing the bolts. The name mammatus is derived from the Latin mamma (meaning udder or breast). According to the WMO International Cloud Atlas, mamma is a cloud supplementary feature rather than a genus, species or variety of cloud. I am not a landscape photographer or a storm chaser, but these days of lockdowns and Movement Controls, one has to expand and shoot what is around us, right? So as I was heading to bed last night, my wife called me to look out our window. It was a massive storm that seemed to strike every few seconds. So I grabbed my GFX, 32-64, and my tripod and walked to the end of my street. These are what I returned with – two strikings (pardon the pun) images. This a composite of the following two images. After fighting with focus, I found the sweet spot. The hard part was finding the focus. I finally used some hotels at the end of my beach to focus on and reset the camera position. A year ago today we chased Dale’s final storm through Vici, Oklahoma. I can remember him yelling out the window in excitement every time we passed each other on the side of the road. Like two kids playing tag. We were both chasing the our next best image with everything we had. That is the only way he knew how. All or nothing. Reader Mike Lodato sent us this photo of the amazing cloud he saw while sailing last week. “We had a beautiful sail from the Harraseeket River and had just grabbed a mooring at Sebasco Harbor Estates on July 2 to enjoy the fireworks planned for that evening,” he wrote. My son looked to the north and said we better get the sails stowed!’ The system seemed to be moving at 30 to 40 mph and when it got overhead, the wind swung around 180 and the temperature dropped at least 15 degrees. The system moved past with not much drama, and then let loose with a lightning show. The fireworks went off later as planned. Up and Down Orange Strike – The storm from Sep 22 continues to produce some great shots. I thought that I had gone through and processed the best ones, but it appears I overlooked this gem. Penang, Malaysia, Sep 22, 2020 I spent an enjoyable quiet few hours comparing noise reduction software on the PC. I used this image, which out of the camera is underexposed and was taken at ISO 800 f4 8s. My normal workflow is to do a noise reduction pass, then HDR then do final touch-ups in Lightroom before publishing. Topaz Labs came out with a new version of DeNoise AI so I decided to test it out. In the past, it hasnt worked well for me on lightning or night storm shots producing crazy artifacts. I was curious to see if they had trained the AI any better. I did a qualitative (I stared at the screen really hard and zoomed in a lot) comparison using Lightroom and Photoshop noise reduction, Franzis Denoise Projects 3 Professional, Neat Image V8, Topaz Labs DeNoise AI and Niks Dfine 2. I used auto settings where possible or selected a profile that was suitable to a high noise night image. My favourite noise reduction software is Neat Image V8 and I use it daily. After doing this test, Im going to be adding DeNoise AI into my workflow. It worked like a charm doing a good job of getting rid of almost all the noise but leaving good detail. I also tested applying the noise reduction after I had done the HDR process and DeNoise AI worked almost as well. The HDR process usually adds strange noise in underexposed sections and is extremely difficult to remove. We finally had our first decent line of storms track over the South East coast of Queensland on Thursday with some semi decent structure and a few CGs thrown in for good measure. I headed out to Woody Point jetty as they tend to shelf up nicely once they hit the sea breeze and I didn’t fancy driving too far in peak hour traffic risking getting caught under it. I was pretty happy to capture a few frames with bolts backlit through the rain curtain but was hoping for more to be honest after last years poor season. I think part of the reason for not feeling overly excited about how things unfolded was also the sad reminder that this will be our first season without our inspirational mate Dale. Half the fun of storm chasing over the last few years was having the big fella standing next to us to share the stoke.
