As a rider you always try to do your best. You never want to harm anyone, you never want to fail. Sometimes there are moments in which controlling every situation is difficult as your mind is at your 200% trying to be fast, and only those who do this job can understand that feeling. I know I made a mistake last weekend in Austria and I completely understood the sanction, I apologized and I took my responsibility. I didn’t do anything on purpose and that should be obvious. I’m not the only one making mistakes, it’s part of the job and part of the learning process, we all have something to learn everyday. Judging too much never helps. Πριν από τρεις δεκαετίες ξεκίνησα ένα ταξίδι, με αφετηρία το νησί μου την Κέρκυρα και με σημαντικούς ενδιάμεσους σταθμούς τη Θεσσαλονίκη, την Αθήνα, τον Πειραιά και 5 Ολυμπιακές πόλεις. Ο πρώτος κύκλος του ταξιδιού μου αυτού ολοκληρώθηκε στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Ριο, το 2016, με ένα ολυμπιακό μετάλλιο, έτσι όπως ονειρεύεται κάθε αθλητής. Σήμερα ξεκινάω ένα δεύτερο ταξίδι, διεκδικώντας την προεδρία της Κολυμβητικής Ομοσπονδίας Ελλάδος, ελπίζοντας ότι θα είναι το ίδιο μεγάλο και το ίδιο συναρπαστικό με αυτό που βίωσα ως αθλητής. Συχνά λέω ότι όλοι οι αθλητές που δημιουργήσαμε με τα χρόνια μια δεύτερη οικογένεια, αυτή του αθλήματός μας, έχουμε μια υποχρέωση απέναντι της. Έχω ζήσει και ζω την πραγματικότητα του αθλητισμού στην Ελλάδα, με τις δυνατές στιγμές χαράς και τις απογοητεύσεις, με τα προβλήματα αλλά και τη δημιουργία. Τη δύναμη που ένιωθα ως αθλητής για να ξεπεράσω τις δυσκολίες και τα εμπόδια, τη νιώθω και σήμερα για να βρίσκομαι παρών στη νέα πραγματικότητα του Υγρού Στίβου. Η αφοσίωσή μου στην αθλητική μου οικογένεια και η γνώση μου θα συνδυαστεί με ένα ολοκληρωμένο πρόγραμμα για το σύνολο του Υγρού Στίβου καθώς και με την τεχνογνωσία της ομάδας που δημιουργούμε για να διεκδικήσουμε την ενεργή συμμετοχή μας στην επόμενη ημέρα της κολύμβησης,της υδατοσφαίρισης,της κολύμβησης ανοιχτής θάλασσας, της τεχνικής και της καλλιτεχνικης κολύμβησης, των καταδύσεων. Big congratulations to Lotte who did a super race to finish the worldchampionship in 9. Place. A solid swim, bike snd run where she fighted well. Stine delivered a good performance and debut with 57th position. The boys had a quite ordinary day at the office with Casper had big trouble with his wetsuit and had his race destroyed after that. Gustav snd Kristian was not right there and was not able to get up to the front group on the bike and started the run in the main pack. Bear Lake Brawl done! First pro race in the US this year thanks to @professionaltriathletesorg, and a 2nd place finish for me. 🇺🇸 My favorite part was swimming in the clear, blue water of Bear Lake, 😍 and then the screaming tailwind on the first part of the bike. 😂 • Incredibly grateful to have raced today, even if the conditions were challenging (cool temps, wind, and rain for at least an hour on the bike = 🥶). I’ll take tough conditions over no racing any day! 🙏🏽 Congrats to everyone who braved the day!! • Thank you to everyone on course for the cheers! Just over a week ago I crossed the finish line in the Olympic speed skating oval at Ironman Lake Placid. It’s hard to describe how I felt then (certainly glad to be done) or how I feel now, but here are a few thoughts. I’m relatively happy with my swim 1:12, bummed about my bike, and fairly stoked I turned things around and had a PR run. I suppose it’s all too easy to harp on what didn’t go well (will we ever be good enough?), but instead I’m pretty damn grateful to have finished the race strong! There was some serious doubt I’d start the race as I pinched a nerve in my back at the airport 4 days prior and was basically immobile for 2 days. So really... how can I complain? I got to train and race an Ironman! I did pretty damn well in hot and windy conditions (10:49, 96th out of 2060) and got a big old sweaty kiss from @saltnsweet at the finish. Первый старт в триатлоне 🏊🏼♂️🚴♂️🏃 Поделюсь с вами о том как это было 👇 Мой друг и по совместительству тренер @alexanderbryukhankov скинул ссылку, на интересный для меня старт в Москве, я оплатил. Выбрали короткую дистанцию, дальше организационные вопросы, в чем бежать, как плыть и так далее. Основные моменты были перед стартом: куда поставить байк, как проходить транзитную зону, правильно ли я все делаю и так далее. Но самое главное, было не понятно как быстро придётся плыть, ехать и бежать. Все это прошло когда начался старт. Тут быстро понял что от меня требуется и реально получал удовольствие. Ещё бы, столько адреналина и эмоций, давно не было. Ещё плыл я без гидрика, но после старта было уже пофиг 🤪 Как сказал Саня, первые старты они и созданы, чтобы получить кайф и понять заходит тебе или нет. Задача была просто понять что такое триатлон. После плавания выходишь как “пьяный”, настраиваешь компас, это было самое запоминающейся (кроме подготовки). Ещё конечно приятен обгон соперников, но это смотря как готовился. Ironman New Zealand 2020 Relatively uneventful for an Ironman (that is, nothing went majorly wrong for once!). Last year I was so disappointed as I basically walked a large portion of the marathon. No excuses. Just not my day yesterday and thats okey. I didnt perform as I wanted and that sucks, but I gave it my all and did the best with what I had on the day. Body just didnt seem quite ready to push hard after WTS Hamburg last weekend. Un viaggio durato mesi e concluso a Cervia; questo è stato il mio primo Ironman. Come tutti gli altri viaggi è stata un’esperienza unica perché ogni volta è sempre un’avventura nuova. Ho avuto la soddisfazione di chiuderlo in 9h57’ anche se avrei voluto fare meglio ma ho scoperto quanto ancora c’è da imparare su questa distanza e quanto affasciante sia poterti scoprire bracciata dopo bracciata, pedalata dopo pedalata, metro dopo metro. Day 1 - 38km swim around the circumference of Lac Annecy. I hadnt planned on swimming in my wetsuit, but the water temperature had dropped a few degrees since the last time I had swam in the lake. I was starting in the dark, in a thick cold mist, so given the enormity of what lay ahead I decided that it was better to suit up. If it got too hot, I would take it off. Better to be safe than sorry! . I started strong, didnt take long to find my rhythm alongside @dlvski on her paddle board. I swam for an hour before taking on any nutrition, sticking to my normal routine of 1hour and then 30minute feeds of @high5sportsnutrition carb powder. It didnt take long for the sun to start coming up, something that I didnt have in last years challenge! It was absolutely majestic watching it rise above the mountains. The water was still and extremely tranquil. I seem to have a knack for picking good weather windows! Or maybe luck just decides to give me a chance when it comes to the actual challenge because I have so much bad luck beforehand 🤣. . I kept myself amused for quite a while, playing wheres Olly as @ollybowmanphotography kept popping up all over the place with his camera and drone. . After about 5hours much to the relief of Donna and Eddy, @rollingstoneishome and @katieyakk appeared on the boat, taking on the support baton. I started to tire around the 7hour mark, it had been a long time since Id been in a wetsuit for that length of time and it definitely takes it toll on your shoulders. At this point I started to have a slight sense of humour failure and was being a bit grumpy with the support team, accusing them of not keeping the boat straight 😂, wheres @bigbayevents when I need them!? @katieyakk then took her turn on the paddle board and restored my sense of humour. . Moving into the 8th hour I thought it was never going to end. I was finding the freshwater swim much tougher than I thought. Stroke by stroke I continued and finished in 9hours 33mins, equating to 10 x sub 1 hour ironman swims. . When it got tough I reminded myself why I was doing it. Only 7 weeks ago but feels like a lifetime! Finish line at @ironmannz 🏁 I later found out I was about 6 weeks pregnant when this photo was taken, but I had a miscarriage just a few days later ☹️ I’ve felt nervous about sharing this because I was worried what people would think about me doing endurance sport while pregnant. Do I regret doing Ironman? No way! The doctor assured me that it was very unlikely to have been caused by exercise as I was healthy and well-conditioned. So, let’s talk about miscarriages - I had barely got my head around the fact I was pregnant before I had mine, so I think that actually made it easier, and also knowing that it was most likely because the baby was too sick to survive. I do know some people find it very traumatic though. I’m lucky to have friends who have experienced similar things and were able to provide a listening ear. Hoy se cumplen 4 años de este día, terminando como subcampeón mundial de Ironman 70.3 en mi categoría. Si alguien un par de años antes de esta foto me hubiese dicho que esto iba a ocurrir, le hubiese dicho que estaba loco. Dos años antes de esta foto nunca había nadado mas de 100 metros o pedaleado mas de 30 mins seguidos, trabajaba 100+ horas a la semana, mi alimentación no era la mejor y pesaba 13kgs más. Hubo mucho trabajo, pasión y obsesión para llegar a este resultado, pero sobre todo SOÑAR con algo que bajo cualquier lógica, era imposible. SOÑAR es uno de los regalos más poderosos que nos entrega la vida para imaginar y lograr cosas que en un principio parecen imposibles. #olympicday Heartbreak and happiness in one place. The pure joy of living a child hood dream. The happiness it brought to those closest to you; family, friends, old school teachers, coaches and many more. It’s a special place the Olympics, it is and always will be a memory I’ll cherish forever. But the truth is, for people that compete at the games there is more heartbreak than happiness. I’ve never really spoke about my Olympic experience before and that’s because I felt selfish feeling disappointed. Disappointed that I wasn’t able to put together a performance I know I was capable of. Disappointed to feel I let people down. Up until 2 months ago I never looked at the results page from this race or watched the replay. I just had no interest. But one day on the turbo I came across the replay on YouTube. Whilst watching I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Of course I’ll never be completely content with how I performed, but something I’ll always be proud of is being able to call myself an Olympian. And that’s a pretty cool club to be part of. Dreaming with my eyes wide open 💭 👀 . Last Saturday the most magical thing happened. After several moths of just training I was unsure if racing a WTS would be the best way to open the ITU season, luckily I took the chance! The 7k swim sessions with Anders Holmertz finally payed off and I was able to almost join the 1st pack out of the water. With just a few seconds gap to close I pushed alone and hard. It took 5k to close 5 seconds, my legs were dead and couldnt stop puking. When I managed to join the first group I thought I would have to walk throughout the run. But surprisingly I managed to recover within a few laps, help the group and even come in first into T2. I felt really strong in the beginning of the run, decided not to play smart, to push my limits and go past the confort zone! That got me alone with the two frenchman fighting for the title. With almost no strength left for the sprint finish I still managed to became the World Vice-Champion! . This medal is the result of the work of so many people, starting with my family and coaches (headcoach Joachim Willén) who have made a huge investment in me. As well as the people financing me through the federation, sponsorships and teams. Last but not least my training mates, that are suffering every day by my side! Kat won yesterday and had a great race. In her mind she didn’t have any significant problems and it was a smooth.But that’s what makes people like her and others (who will all have a similar story from Sunday) different and why they succeed. I realise more and more that triathlon is a game of perseverance and heres why Sunday was another example: Day before her chain jammed solid in front chainrings and gears didn’t work, my mistake and fixed with a borrowed drill. Swim was shortened to 750, more than halving her advantage on her main rival Power meter wouldn’t turn on when setting up, probably broken by me with the drill 🙄 Got ver cold in swim but mega tuck and kick screaming dive boosted bravado! T1 - her hands were too cold to put gloves on so throws them to save time and stay in the race Gets numb feet from transition run and rear bottle cage caused a near crash on mount (luckily got this on footage) Couldn’t get her feet in the shoes as just too cold Freezing start and regrets kit choices, starts to doubt Gets stopped by traffic at the first turn, falls further behind Fenella Dropped by Fenella on the first climb and already being caught by Nikki - “ffs” Sick in mouth and couldn’t eat to start - thinks “GI issues again?” Almost gets blown off the bike “was 60mm a terrible choice?” I tell her Lucy Hall is 3 mins up causing slight panic. She pushed on trying to catch and drop the other two into head wind only to look back to see Nikki being happily paced Gives up pushing on and hands over to Nikki, settling to letting her dictate the pace Problematic glute becomes “alarmingly sore “ Shoes won’t go on in T2, then run out the wrong way (again on Camera 👌🏻) Had something in the heel of her shoe, “it’s ok I run on my forefoot anyway” Back and legs are alarmingly sore for the first 3km. Hips “crazy tight, Will it settle?” Only had 75% of nutrition and water, “will I fade?” Thinks “Why haven’t I seen Lucy?” I forgot to tell her she went wrong 🤦♂️. ALOHA! We have three very excited Race Pacers in Darren Griffiths, Leigh Gunn & David Jouy. All 3 athletes have qualified for the Ironman World Championship, to be held in Kona 2021. For an Age-Group Triathlete this is one of the pinnacles of our sport, to have all 3 of our athletes qualify is extra special. Our three warriors lined up at Ironman Cairns on what was described by experienced athletes as their most brutal Cairns experience. The fastest Age grouper stated that this race was tougher than any of the multiple races that he had done previously in Kona. The Cairns course is hard anyway but with a change in the bike course to include 6 climbs of Rexs lookout, with a suffocatingly hot wind & high humidity, everyone had their work cut out. The race then became a slog, an exercise in survival & mental toughness as well as endurance. Darren was contesting his first Ironman & stuck to the task very well, finishing in 11.54 & 9th in the 50-54 age. Leigh was a strong, determined 6th in the 40-44 age, finishing in 10.39. Whilst David in his 5th IM race had his fastest ever time of 10.30, on his way to a 35 min pb. This was one day where the times were almost irrelevant, for our 3 athletes it came down to what placing they could garner. They all showed amazing resilience. You cant have solid Ironman race results like this without putting in the training. All three athletes were meticulous in their preparation. Their success at Cairns & the Kona qualification was very well deserved, it was a consequence of discipline & diligence, as they ticked off every box in training. Quite simply they were rewarded for their consistent effort over many months. All of our Race Pace family, friends & supporters are delighted with this achievement and send their congratulations. Blenheim Palace Triathlon: Weekend Warrior. Where do I start... 140km on the bike, 40k running and 6k swimming achieved. I never have done long distance before and the furthest was an Olympic before this weekend. Somehow managed 8 triathlons... couldn’t have done it without my fellow fantastic Evo club mates and fellow warriors. The camaraderie’s was the best part. RACEWEEK! Mein Rennen vom virtuellen SMCT ist Geschichte. Mit soliden Zeiten über 1500m Schwimmen (ca. 17:30min) 40km Radfahren (ca. 58:29min) und 10km Laufen (34:50min) bin ich sehr zufrieden. Dazu muss gesagt werden, dass ich alle 3 Distanzen tatsächlich direkt hintereinander absolviert habe und wir uns nicht komplett flache Strecken rausgesucht haben. Der Spaß am Sport und vor allem das alles Geben standen im Vordergrund. Das letzte Bild zeigt meine Gesamtzeit, die ich inklusive beider Wechsel benötigt habe und von Ralf gestoppt wurde. I am not a member of a Tri club specifically, but do associate myself with the Tairua Pigs Multiport club formerly known as the alpacas, almost called the goats.” This weeks @nzswimbikerun featured athlete is Matt Kerr from Whangamata @nz_matt_kerr . Triathlon specifically is something that is relatively new to me. Finishing school sports playing Water Polo and transitioning into Crossfit, I soon came to the conclusion endurance sports was something I wanted to explore further. With two years of serious investment in triathlon I now find myself striving for personal success and elite status. I am currently a full time Secondary School teacher at Whangamata Area School training and working for the best balance of performance, enjoyment and health. I have mainly raced within Australasia targeting half and full ironman distance events. @ironmannz has to be my favourite kiwi event - the atmosphere it creates and at the back end of our summer, provides the perfect summer training block. With such an unpredictable year so far, I am excited to get on the Rotorua. Suffer. start line in December. Summer will include a half ironman training block for the @taurangahalf & Mount Festival. IRONMAN WILMINGTON, NC 70.3 RACE RECAP: Triumph at the line. Overall Wilmington is a nice venue, however If you are not a fan of point to point racing, this race may not be for you. It also was not the most spectator friendly venue of the races we showed up to this season, so something to keep in mind for your support crew. Now time for the individual discipline details: SWIM: A salt water swim inside the boating harbor, that was point to point. The swim course wasn’t a straight line, and the movement of the ocean along with the slightly sideways current gave a bit of a challenge to my orientation. A few good bangs of the “swimming bars” kept the swim interesting. BIKE: Pretty decent transition run from the swim to the bike, which I used to settle my heart rate and get my legs warmed up for the ride. The bike was decently flat, with slight headwinds making you earn your watts. Lanes were roomy and road surfaces were pretty clean, so thumbs up. Bike distance was a little long with my computer showing a nearly 2 mile overshot from the normal 56. Had a slight technical with my seat post dropping during the ride. After the race confirmed a drop of roughly 20mm. RUN: My overall hope for this race was to handle the run feeling strong. Coming off the bike, my lower back was extremely tight, sore and almost felt like it wanted to stiffen even more. Not good. I channeled much of the inspiration I see from all of you, and told myself that the pain can fight me, but it’s in for a 13 mile fight. Heading into the final miles, I do my thing in saying “I’m coming for you mama” which is my “sending” of a mental message that I’m on my way back to my wife. The finishing run was just two minutes off the best I’ve ever run, and seeing my wife and staying strong through my challenging run, left me in complete #crushitwithasmile mode. Much love as always to those who sent messages, texts and comments of positivity. You all impact me more than you know, and I thank you so much for inspiring and motivating me not only during this race effort, but on so many other levels with your positive light. 🤩 Race photo spam!! Finally got around to getting my race photos, and writing a wee bit of a race report!! I had the most amazing day at @ironmannz Going into my first Ironman, my goal was to have a consistent controlled race and it went almost exactly to plan, with a swim time of exactly what I wanted (1hr5mins), 2x evenly split 90km loops on the bike, and 3x evenly split 14km loops on the run. . 🏊♀️ Swim 3.8km 1:05:04 🚴♀️ Bike 180km 5:34:47 🏃♀️ Run 42km 3:58:27 💪 Total: 10:45:51 I came 5th/34 in my age group, and 147/1164 overall. It was awesome to have my parents @bronwyn_kirby and @richardkirby9414 , sister @de_nysee and @albie_trd there to support me, as well as the rest of the Mr Smiths IronTeam (you know who you are!!). Albie is the one thats done the hard yards this year, while Ive been busy training. Thank you for supporting me to follow my a̶d̶d̶i̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶s̶ dreams! ❤️ . This is my final race for the season (as remaining events being cancelled) so Im happy to go out on a high! Amazing performance from @maxxyneumann at #IMCairns. I’ll call it early and say that with his talent and obvious ability in extreme heat that he will be a real contender in Kona way younger than is the norm. Training with @timberkel and seeing the predicted conditions in which he thrives I knew it was a certainty he would have a great day and he didn’t disappoint finishing 2nd. Finally, always big respect to @josh_amberger for his gutsy tactics and hanging tough for 3rd. I was 4th a long way back. Honestly, gutted that the heat is still and likely always will be my biggest nemesis in Ironman racing. I’ll dwell on this and what direction I’ll take my racing calendar next year and maybe beyond later this week but for now it’s just nice to be home surrounded by a little love and lots of chaos. Full credit to @ironmanoceania for making this event happen against the odds and conforming to all the required COVID safe strategies. Thank you in particular for keeping the pro race alive here. For a business that has taken a major hit this year it’s hugely appreciated. To the amateurs that finished, that’s as hard as it gets. Kicking that race off with a wetsuit swim in 27 degree water (a Cairns necessary evil due to stingers risk) is literally like doing a 45-120 min stint in the sauna depending before starting a Kona like course with the same heat and humidity. Au fur et à mesure je me sens mieux... et je reprends un peu de force 💪🏼 Je pose « virtuellement » 8ème le vélo car je n’ai pas été au parc à vélo, bah oui je n’avais plus ma puce) dommage, on apprend de ses erreurs, j’aurai peut être dû attendre que « ça passe », je suis trop exigeant avec moi. 😟 FIN DE SAISON. Riding through the jungle of Cozumel! It was a roller coaster of a day for sure tough swim with a strange stomach cramp that limited my swim speed. Had a strong ride that got me back into the fight. I started the hot run in 14th place and after a tough first 10km I was able to get enough ice to cool off and rally. Over the last 10km I clawed my way into 10th place. Hot races are definitely a challenge but happy to have finished strong and cracked the top ten even with a rocky start. SWIM 🏊♀️: 70.3 Tallinn. Sprinted off the line to ensure I was with @kaidikivioja entering. I was pretty sure shed be the strongest with her ITU background, also aware that @majastage and I had similar times on record. I took hold of the first few hundred meters before sitting in behind @kaidikivioja as we had swum nearly side by side. No point in wasting effort. Maja was there too but no one else I was aware of. Around half way it was still the 3 of us with @kaidikivioja still pulling at the front and me with still no idea on direction! 👌🏼Kudos to Kaidi for her sighting! Homeward bound, it felt like a very long swim by this point (someones strava clocked ~2100m total). I slowly saw a bouy and then an opportunity to take a better line, at this point feeling relatively fresh/lazy ~ 200m? out. Decided to take it and worked hard to pip Kaidi to the shore with Maja on her toes. Fastest swim 🏅 on the clock but probably only by tactics. Time to up👩💻 the swim game I think!
