Built a life size @gozwift setup for the Pain Cavern last week, and it’s sweet! . I used a Carl’s Golf 10x7 impact screen and 5’ deep cage so I can also hit golf balls into this. . Today I used the Apple TV 4K plugged into an Epson projector. . For the trainer I’m using the @tacxperience Neo 2t. . This entire setup is by far the most realistic experience I’ve had on a trainer. #WTShamburg. It was a rough weekend. Saterday the individual race. After a pretty bad swim for me being down around 40th place, i was able to ‘settle’ in big chasegroup on what has been probably the fastest bikeleg in a WTS ever. On the run, i just struggled. My level just wasn’t good enough and eventually finished 41st. I was upset and disappointed. I worked hard all year and this was not the result or the feeling i was after. I had to put my emotions aside and get ready for the next day for the Mixed Team Relay with #teamNL Sunday morning, we usually have the team meeting and discuss final thoughts and raceplans. Everything was as usual, and so we raced. After the first leg with @mayakingma , there was a little gap to first 8 in the race. It was my job to close this and keep fighting for the top spots. I swam all out, almost closing the gap. I was at the rear end of the group. I gave my all in T1, mounted my bike and went as hard as i could to the first U-turn. I still wasn’t there. I braked into the corner, making the gap less than 2M. As you know, this is just the moment of the corner and after accelerating with all I had left for about a minute, i was still on 15/20m. The front guys didn’t think about slowing down for a second and I found myself in a very painfull individual timetrial for the remaining 4.5k. Then onto the run, i gave my everything and handed over to @rachelklamer in about 12th spot. She got us back in the race for positions 8/12. With @jorikvanegdom finishing the race in 11th. Personally i had a better feeling than the day before, but the result was not what we expected or hoped for. We know where we stand now and also the work that still needs to be done to make it to next years olympics. Still proud of the whole team for doing what we could. La saison 2019 se clôture sur une bonne note après trois semaines à lautre bout du globe et deux coupes du monde. Le voyage fut riche en émotions et en résultats: deux podiums en poursuite par équipe 🥇/🥉. Ironman 70.3 Zell am See 🏊🏼♂️🚴🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️ Was für eine tolle Erfahrung, was für eine tolle Veranstaltung! Beim Schwimmen im Zeller See (1,9km)hatte ich leider etwas Probleme, sodass ich viel Zeit verloren habe! Auf der anspruchsvollen und auch durchaus gefährlichen Radstrecke (90km) habe ich mich echt gut gefühlt, eine traumhafte Gegend🏞⛰. Die Laufstrecke (21km) um den See und durch die Stadt war perfekt und die Zuschauer an der gesamten Strecke haben uns Athleten noch extra motiviert😁... BIKE 🚴♀️: 70.3 Tallinn 40 kmph. 90km. 2hrs14min. Out of T1 quickest in just 1:38, never had a better wetsuit strip and helmet grab👌🏼. Mounted fine and initial glace at my bike computer showed no connections, thats ok, give it a minute. 📍GPS loaded, nothing else. A little fiddle and decided to accept speed and distance will be enough data today, I must have made an error setting it up! For a self confessed heart rate geek, nervously I accepted the challenge. Out onto the course and quickly into the first turn around (11km) gave me good perspective of the race behind. Maja was ~50m behind having overtaken Kaidi. The first half of the course was into a steady head wind🌬 a little demoralising seeing speed (without power check) but I hadnt been caught so assumed it must be the same for everyone.I kept my focus on pushing hard through the pedals and staying aero. Simples. Finding the best tarmac and getting my head down. 👀I was a bit worried at the 35km point to know Maja was still there (20s back?), as I had wanted to have pulled away a bit. Same (ish) at 65km. I took confidence though in knowing she was having to put in the 💪same effort. So great to see 😍 Mark out on the course a few times, such a focus and motivating influence! He told me afterwards, he knew I was good when I suggested he went to find a beer ~70km. Having no heart rate data I remember saying to myself 🗣outloud at one point howre you feeling yeah Im doing ok... 💭right well push harder then! I knew I could build into the last 25km (just over 30mins to go), a very fast tail wind stretch back into the town (aero most important) and then into the many turns and out the saddle efforts to pick speed up to finish. (Fuel: 60g/hr as caffeine gels, 2 water bottle refills). Into T2 I had given myself an extra minute on Maja (now 1min30 ahead) and had so much confidence in my run I was excited (and relieved as always to have had no bike mechanical issues) but also wary that 90s isnt that much! Slight fumble with 👟Nike% tongue/laces, but my watch connected immediately with ❤ heart rate and I positively skipped out on the run course. No better time to reflect on how grateful I am to be afforded the opportunity to celebrate my health. Lucky to be surrounded by the best support crew in the world - thanks to Deb, Alan, Karen, and Raoul for making the trip and bringing the energy all day to keep me going strong. And to my girls, D and Sloan, you have encouraged me every step of the way and helped me to accomplish a very selfish goal. I rationalized the commitment last year by thinking this would teach Sloan about goal setting, determination, drive, and work ethic. Instead, you have both taught me patience, compromise, and unconditional support. Qualche immagine del campionato italiano di sprint di Lignano... Dopo moltissimi anni in cui non partecipavo a questa gara, questanno ho deciso di tornare un po alle origini. Diciamo che il risultato non era la cosa che mi interessasse di più, anche se devo dire che qualche allenamento specifico, soprattutto a piedi, lo avevo fatto... tanto per non arrivare completamente impreparato a livello di ritmi...😅 Purtroppo però, questo weekend di freddo anomalo e improvviso, ha in parte compromesso la mia gara (assieme alla muta vietata 😅), un po come successo a Cervia lanno scorso, proprio di questo periodo, anche se, per fortuna, senza le stesse conseguenze. In ogni caso, partendo con un numero che non mi sarebbe spettato, ho potuto vedere da vicino questi giovani atleti in azione, e mi sono piacevolmente stupito di quanto il livello medio sia comunque alto. Quello che faccio sempre più difficoltà a capire, è come sia possibile che dalla nostra nazione non possano emergere molti più atleti in grado di confrontarsi a buoni livelli nelle gare internazionali, visto il materiale umano a disposizione. Come altrettanto non capisco perché non possano esserci (molti) altri momenti in cui questi atleti si possano confrontare, in modo da avere sempre stimoli per crescere. Ma non capisco nemmeno perché ci siano atleti per qualche motivo esentati a partecipare e ad onorare un campionato italiano, che, almeno fino ad una decina di anni fa, per chi gravitava nel mondo ITU, era comunque uno degli appuntamenti più importanti! My bike was happy to finish that race, no brake pads left, chain likely needing replacing, about as hard as a race can be on your equipment! Finally a long race to really test the engine, form is coming around and was really just awesome to go all in on a classic final again. Missed the group of 6 that smashed away on final kick, but was close. Encouraging. Not my best sprint for what was left, 19th in the end. Day 1 - 38km swim around the circumference of Lac Annecy. I hadnt planned on swimming in my wetsuit, but the water temperature had dropped a few degrees since the last time I had swam in the lake. I was starting in the dark, in a thick cold mist, so given the enormity of what lay ahead I decided that it was better to suit up. If it got too hot, I would take it off. Better to be safe than sorry! . I started strong, didnt take long to find my rhythm alongside @dlvski on her paddle board. I swam for an hour before taking on any nutrition, sticking to my normal routine of 1hour and then 30minute feeds of @high5sportsnutrition carb powder. It didnt take long for the sun to start coming up, something that I didnt have in last years challenge! It was absolutely majestic watching it rise above the mountains. The water was still and extremely tranquil. I seem to have a knack for picking good weather windows! Or maybe luck just decides to give me a chance when it comes to the actual challenge because I have so much bad luck beforehand 🤣. . I kept myself amused for quite a while, playing wheres Olly as @ollybowmanphotography kept popping up all over the place with his camera and drone. . After about 5hours much to the relief of Donna and Eddy, @rollingstoneishome and @katieyakk appeared on the boat, taking on the support baton. I started to tire around the 7hour mark, it had been a long time since Id been in a wetsuit for that length of time and it definitely takes it toll on your shoulders. At this point I started to have a slight sense of humour failure and was being a bit grumpy with the support team, accusing them of not keeping the boat straight 😂, wheres @bigbayevents when I need them!? @katieyakk then took her turn on the paddle board and restored my sense of humour. . Moving into the 8th hour I thought it was never going to end. I was finding the freshwater swim much tougher than I thought. Stroke by stroke I continued and finished in 9hours 33mins, equating to 10 x sub 1 hour ironman swims. . When it got tough I reminded myself why I was doing it. 🤩 Race photo spam!! Finally got around to getting my race photos, and writing a wee bit of a race report!! I had the most amazing day at @ironmannz Going into my first Ironman, my goal was to have a consistent controlled race and it went almost exactly to plan, with a swim time of exactly what I wanted (1hr5mins), 2x evenly split 90km loops on the bike, and 3x evenly split 14km loops on the run. . 🏊♀️ Swim 3.8km 1:05:04 🚴♀️ Bike 180km 5:34:47 🏃♀️ Run 42km 3:58:27 💪 Total: 10:45:51 I came 5th/34 in my age group, and 147/1164 overall. It was awesome to have my parents @bronwyn_kirby and @richardkirby9414 , sister @de_nysee and @albie_trd there to support me, as well as the rest of the Mr Smiths IronTeam (you know who you are!!). Albie is the one thats done the hard yards this year, while Ive been busy training. Thank you for supporting me to follow my a̶d̶d̶i̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶s̶ dreams! ❤️ . This is my final race for the season (as remaining events being cancelled) so Im happy to go out on a high! Only 7 weeks ago but feels like a lifetime! Finish line at @ironmannz 🏁 I later found out I was about 6 weeks pregnant when this photo was taken, but I had a miscarriage just a few days later ☹️ I’ve felt nervous about sharing this because I was worried what people would think about me doing endurance sport while pregnant. Do I regret doing Ironman? No way! The doctor assured me that it was very unlikely to have been caused by exercise as I was healthy and well-conditioned. So, let’s talk about miscarriages - I had barely got my head around the fact I was pregnant before I had mine, so I think that actually made it easier, and also knowing that it was most likely because the baby was too sick to survive. I do know some people find it very traumatic though. I’m lucky to have friends who have experienced similar things and were able to provide a listening ear. Just over a week ago I crossed the finish line in the Olympic speed skating oval at Ironman Lake Placid. It’s hard to describe how I felt then (certainly glad to be done) or how I feel now, but here are a few thoughts. I’m relatively happy with my swim 1:12, bummed about my bike, and fairly stoked I turned things around and had a PR run. I suppose it’s all too easy to harp on what didn’t go well (will we ever be good enough?), but instead I’m pretty damn grateful to have finished the race strong! There was some serious doubt I’d start the race as I pinched a nerve in my back at the airport 4 days prior and was basically immobile for 2 days. So really... how can I complain? I got to train and race an Ironman! I did pretty damn well in hot and windy conditions (10:49, 96th out of 2060) and got a big old sweaty kiss from @saltnsweet at the finish. #olympicday Heartbreak and happiness in one place. The pure joy of living a child hood dream. The happiness it brought to those closest to you; family, friends, old school teachers, coaches and many more. It’s a special place the Olympics, it is and always will be a memory I’ll cherish forever. But the truth is, for people that compete at the games there is more heartbreak than happiness. I’ve never really spoke about my Olympic experience before and that’s because I felt selfish feeling disappointed. Disappointed that I wasn’t able to put together a performance I know I was capable of. Disappointed to feel I let people down. Up until 2 months ago I never looked at the results page from this race or watched the replay. I just had no interest. But one day on the turbo I came across the replay on YouTube. Whilst watching I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Of course I’ll never be completely content with how I performed, but something I’ll always be proud of is being able to call myself an Olympian. And that’s a pretty cool club to be part of. This is the “I didn’t know you could get motion sick and swim at the same time “ face. Got her done though. Limped in. But that’s ok. Didn’t quit. Sometimes life throws shit at us that we don’t expect. And that’s ok. I went into this swim super confident in the distance and my level of fitness. I swim this far regularly. This was going to be an easy day. Barely a challenge. Being seasick changed that quickly. And I’m ok w that. Like @chadwright278 says, “be hard when it gets hard”. Today got hard. Mentally. DNF sur le L d’Aiguebelette. Après une bonne natation à 2’ de la tête. Rapidement à vélo je sens que je n’ai pas de force, débute l’ascension de l’épine, je m’écroule. 260w au lieu d’être à 315/325w comme prévu... je bâche. Je croise @carnetdevie_ je m’arrête et je décide de lui donner mon dossard et ma puce. Après 4/5’ d’arrêt je décide de repartir pour terminer tranquillement le vélo. Au fur et à mesure je me sens mieux... et je reprends un peu de force 💪🏼 Je pose « virtuellement » 8ème le vélo car je n’ai pas été au parc à vélo, bah oui je n’avais plus ma puce) dommage, on apprend de ses erreurs, j’aurai peut être dû attendre que « ça passe », je suis trop exigeant avec moi. 😟 FIN DE SAISON. Amazing performance from @maxxyneumann at #IMCairns. I’ll call it early and say that with his talent and obvious ability in extreme heat that he will be a real contender in Kona way younger than is the norm. Training with @timberkel and seeing the predicted conditions in which he thrives I knew it was a certainty he would have a great day and he didn’t disappoint finishing 2nd. Finally, always big respect to @josh_amberger for his gutsy tactics and hanging tough for 3rd. I was 4th a long way back. Honestly, gutted that the heat is still and likely always will be my biggest nemesis in Ironman racing. I’ll dwell on this and what direction I’ll take my racing calendar next year and maybe beyond later this week but for now it’s just nice to be home surrounded by a little love and lots of chaos. Full credit to @ironmanoceania for making this event happen against the odds and conforming to all the required COVID safe strategies. Thank you in particular for keeping the pro race alive here. For a business that has taken a major hit this year it’s hugely appreciated. To the amateurs that finished, that’s as hard as it gets. Kicking that race off with a wetsuit swim in 27 degree water (a Cairns necessary evil due to stingers risk) is literally like doing a 45-120 min stint in the sauna depending before starting a Kona like course with the same heat and humidity. 5 years ago today I raced my first Ironman, last minute, 2 weeks after a devastating race at 70.3 World Champs. I had trained all year for World Champs, convinced it was the course and the year I would finally crack that top 5, a career goal of mine. After a drafting penalty took me from 4th off the bike to 23rd starting the run, I limped across the line in anger and sadness. The year was ruined. . 13 days later, with encouragement from my family and coach, I raced without expectation, for the joy of racing and seeing what my body could do in an Ironman off the best half Ironman training of my life. Needless to say, I had a great day, and fell in love with the hills, the crazy weather, the people, the atmosphere in Tenby, and the pursuit for the sake of pursuit. I remember thinking at mile 16 of the run, “this is my longest run in 15 years!” Then shocking myself as my body held strong for 10 more miles through the finish. . As I crossed the line, my family supporting me all day, I broke down and started crying (last picture). The two weeks prior (really the 6 months prior) had been an emotional roller coaster where my biggest goals and anticipated path failed. But I kept my head down, kept my going, and things worked out better than I ever would have imagined. . In light of all that’s going on here in Oregon, across the US and the world in general, I’m trying to remember that moment right now - even if you’re in a really shitty time and place, where it feels like all is lost, something great and different and unexpected could be just a few weeks away. Un viaggio durato mesi e concluso a Cervia; questo è stato il mio primo Ironman. Come tutti gli altri viaggi è stata un’esperienza unica perché ogni volta è sempre un’avventura nuova. Ho avuto la soddisfazione di chiuderlo in 9h57’ anche se avrei voluto fare meglio ma ho scoperto quanto ancora c’è da imparare su questa distanza e quanto affasciante sia poterti scoprire bracciata dopo bracciata, pedalata dopo pedalata, metro dopo metro. Come ogni viaggio ci sono tanti incontri e tanti grazie doverosi...in primis grazie al mio grande coach @ivanristi ormai una garanzia..grazie a @ciclomania_liguria e @mimmonastasi il miglior meccanico che si possa desirare, sempre disponibile e bici sempre pronta al top (purtroppo non sempre la gamba di chi la porta😅)...grazie a @biomotoita per i plantari tecnici per bici e corsa..grazie a @fisiocarerapallo per rimettermi sempre in pista dopo un infortunio...grazie alle persone che quotidianamente sono presenti nella mia vita con il loro sostegno, dai colleghi di lavoro, alla famiglia, agli amici e grazie a tutti coloro che hanno condiviso della fatica in allenamento con me. SWIM 🏊♀️: 70.3 Tallinn. Sprinted off the line to ensure I was with @kaidikivioja entering. I was pretty sure shed be the strongest with her ITU background, also aware that @majastage and I had similar times on record. I took hold of the first few hundred meters before sitting in behind @kaidikivioja as we had swum nearly side by side. No point in wasting effort. Maja was there too but no one else I was aware of. Around half way it was still the 3 of us with @kaidikivioja still pulling at the front and me with still no idea on direction! 👌🏼Kudos to Kaidi for her sighting! Homeward bound, it felt like a very long swim by this point (someones strava clocked ~2100m total). I slowly saw a bouy and then an opportunity to take a better line, at this point feeling relatively fresh/lazy ~ 200m? out. Decided to take it and worked hard to pip Kaidi to the shore with Maja on her toes. Fastest swim 🏅 on the clock but probably only by tactics. Time to up👩💻 the swim game I think! Riding through the jungle of Cozumel! It was a roller coaster of a day for sure tough swim with a strange stomach cramp that limited my swim speed. Had a strong ride that got me back into the fight. I started the hot run in 14th place and after a tough first 10km I was able to get enough ice to cool off and rally. Over the last 10km I clawed my way into 10th place. Hot races are definitely a challenge but happy to have finished strong and cracked the top ten even with a rocky start. Hoy se cumplen 4 años de este día, terminando como subcampeón mundial de Ironman 70.3 en mi categoría. Si alguien un par de años antes de esta foto me hubiese dicho que esto iba a ocurrir, le hubiese dicho que estaba loco. Dos años antes de esta foto nunca había nadado mas de 100 metros o pedaleado mas de 30 mins seguidos, trabajaba 100+ horas a la semana, mi alimentación no era la mejor y pesaba 13kgs más. Hubo mucho trabajo, pasión y obsesión para llegar a este resultado, pero sobre todo SOÑAR con algo que bajo cualquier lógica, era imposible. SOÑAR es uno de los regalos más poderosos que nos entrega la vida para imaginar y lograr cosas que en un principio parecen imposibles. ALOHA! We have three very excited Race Pacers in Darren Griffiths, Leigh Gunn & David Jouy. All 3 athletes have qualified for the Ironman World Championship, to be held in Kona 2021. For an Age-Group Triathlete this is one of the pinnacles of our sport, to have all 3 of our athletes qualify is extra special. Our three warriors lined up at Ironman Cairns on what was described by experienced athletes as their most brutal Cairns experience. The fastest Age grouper stated that this race was tougher than any of the multiple races that he had done previously in Kona. The Cairns course is hard anyway but with a change in the bike course to include 6 climbs of Rexs lookout, with a suffocatingly hot wind & high humidity, everyone had their work cut out. The race then became a slog, an exercise in survival & mental toughness as well as endurance. Darren was contesting his first Ironman & stuck to the task very well, finishing in 11.54 & 9th in the 50-54 age. Leigh was a strong, determined 6th in the 40-44 age, finishing in 10.39. Whilst David in his 5th IM race had his fastest ever time of 10.30, on his way to a 35 min pb. This was one day where the times were almost irrelevant, for our 3 athletes it came down to what placing they could garner. They all showed amazing resilience. You cant have solid Ironman race results like this without putting in the training. All three athletes were meticulous in their preparation. Their success at Cairns & the Kona qualification was very well deserved, it was a consequence of discipline & diligence, as they ticked off every box in training. Quite simply they were rewarded for their consistent effort over many months. All of our Race Pace family, friends & supporters are delighted with this achievement and send their congratulations. A special mention to Race Pace sponsor and supporter Beth McKenzie. It appears as though Beth has called time on Ironman racing. Her performances over 20 Ironman races have been quite remarkable & very inspiring to many athletes. Well done Beth, you can feel very satisfied with all that you have achieved. IRONMAN WILMINGTON, NC 70.3 RACE RECAP: Triumph at the line. Overall Wilmington is a nice venue, however If you are not a fan of point to point racing, this race may not be for you. It also was not the most spectator friendly venue of the races we showed up to this season, so something to keep in mind for your support crew. Now time for the individual discipline details: SWIM: A salt water swim inside the boating harbor, that was point to point. The swim course wasn’t a straight line, and the movement of the ocean along with the slightly sideways current gave a bit of a challenge to my orientation. A few good bangs of the “swimming bars” kept the swim interesting. BIKE: Pretty decent transition run from the swim to the bike, which I used to settle my heart rate and get my legs warmed up for the ride. The bike was decently flat, with slight headwinds making you earn your watts. Lanes were roomy and road surfaces were pretty clean, so thumbs up. Bike distance was a little long with my computer showing a nearly 2 mile overshot from the normal 56. Had a slight technical with my seat post dropping during the ride. After the race confirmed a drop of roughly 20mm. RUN: My overall hope for this race was to handle the run feeling strong. Coming off the bike, my lower back was extremely tight, sore and almost felt like it wanted to stiffen even more. Not good. I channeled much of the inspiration I see from all of you, and told myself that the pain can fight me, but it’s in for a 13 mile fight. Heading into the final miles, I do my thing in saying “I’m coming for you mama” which is my “sending” of a mental message that I’m on my way back to my wife. The finishing run was just two minutes off the best I’ve ever run, and seeing my wife and staying strong through my challenging run, left me in complete #crushitwithasmile mode. Much love as always to those who sent messages, texts and comments of positivity. You all impact me more than you know, and I thank you so much for inspiring and motivating me not only during this race effort, but on so many other levels with your positive light. I am not a member of a Tri club specifically, but do associate myself with the Tairua Pigs Multiport club formerly known as the alpacas, almost called the goats.” This weeks @nzswimbikerun featured athlete is Matt Kerr from Whangamata @nz_matt_kerr . Triathlon specifically is something that is relatively new to me. Finishing school sports playing Water Polo and transitioning into Crossfit, I soon came to the conclusion endurance sports was something I wanted to explore further. With two years of serious investment in triathlon I now find myself striving for personal success and elite status. I am currently a full time Secondary School teacher at Whangamata Area School training and working for the best balance of performance, enjoyment and health. I have mainly raced within Australasia targeting half and full ironman distance events. @ironmannz has to be my favourite kiwi event - the atmosphere it creates and at the back end of our summer, provides the perfect summer training block. With such an unpredictable year so far, I am excited to get on the Rotorua. Suffer. start line in December. Summer will include a half ironman training block for the @taurangahalf & Mount Festival. This will be the first race I have entered in the elite field and I cannot wait. My coach, mentor and educator - @profgrant.schofield really does define the 80% coach moto. He is an individual who gives me a lot of motivation to be better than before.
