I debated about even posting this but it goes to show we still have a ways to go with the misinformation on “Exercising While Pregnant” & the only way we do that, is addressing the misinformation. These are just a few of the screen grabs I’ve seen this week directed towards me. So here we are: let’s talk some facts. Exercising while pregnant is one of the BEST things a low risk mother can continue to do for herself and her baby. Research has undoubtedly proven this and the old school thoughts have very much been debunked ( even if your Doctor still adheres to some of them) One of the biggest reasons there’s so much controversy with this subject in my humble opinion: 1. Old school thoughts are still believed & some doctors still adhere to the older guidelines. 2. Cultural differences. 3. Large majority of people associate exercise with negativity thanks to diet culture. Rather than seeing the benefits toward ones physical and mental health, they automatically associate exercise to punishment, weight-loss and vanity as the sole reasons for ones exercise. 👏🏼Exercise is more than just aethetics. It’s medicine. It’s a pivotal pillar in health.👏🏼 So with that being said, I listed a few of the positive benefits of exercise ( yes including weight lifting) have! 🙌🏽🙌🏽 There are functional reasons to continue lifting. Picking up your baby’s car seat works the exact same muscles as a deadlift. 😉 There will be people who may or may not support your choices and be hateful but the ignorance lies with them, not YOU! You do what’s best for you and your baby. In due time, I’m a firm believer exercising while pregnant will have less stigma, it already does....we just have to continue educating on it and sharing our journeys. 🙏🏼 ***and if you choose not to exercise for whatever reason that is OK...but shaming mothers who do, needs to stop. We have to be more supportive of one another ♥️ So many mothers stop sharing because of the endless amount of unnecessary judgment. Sadly this shouldn’t be a subject moms are shamed for. Still one of my absolute favorite ways to hammer my legs...the Bulgarian Split Squat. The “doubling” drop set is something I use that works especially well here. Perform a set of about 5-6 reps...drop to half the weight (swipe left) and attempt to complete twice as many reps. As far as the exercise itself, pay attention to your torso angle. Straight up or leaning forward? Neither are incorrect. Just depends on what you want to train more. Straight up will target those quads more while leaning forward will shift the load to the glutes/hams (posterior chain). Either way you can’t go wrong. Feel free to mix it up as well. Meantime, if you haven’t done these for awhile you’re in for a treat. That is, if you consider difficulty sitting and standing from the toilet or walking up stairs a treat. Hip flexor strains and hip flexor tightness are a common thing! So is hip flexor related low back pain! - Your main hip flexors include the ileopsoas muscle and the rectus femoris quad muscle. The ileopsoas starts on your lumbar vertebrae and goes down and attaches to the femur. The rectus femoris starts on the pelvis and goes down past the knee so it can bend the hip AND the knee joints. - We are a sitting population nowadays which means these muscles are in a shortened position for extended periods of time which means they can often get tight! - However hip flexors are also often neglected in training routines meaning they are actually usually WEAK as well! - Swipe to see some of my favorite ways to train the hip flexors! - Don’t forget to train these muscles guys! 11 yrs ago!! Man what I would give to get back to this type of shape! @advancedsportsperformance DAngelo Kinard circuits & all the trainings I was doing had me right right! I remember hearing another coach that was on the team who has his own gym saying “nobody really trains 8 to 10 hrs a day, they say that but are really drilling most of that time” I didn’t say anything but was thinking “ SHIIITTT” I consistently trained 8 to 12 hrs a day 5 days a week and 1 training the 6th day for years!! I would do MMA or Kickboxing , Do Jitsu hard, then do Jiu Jitsu hard again later. Then leave straight from there when people were going home & go straight to the Russell’s for boxing & do the whole boxing workout as if I was just a boxer. Sometimes I would’ve done some of the boxing workouts at Limma & once I remember telling coach @martinroberth I already did this today already trying to move on or cut that part out & he said “If I didn’t see it, it didn’t count” So from that point on I kept it to myself. It was also funny but not funny when someone thought they were really getting out on you in a training when they only trained that one area a day & you had been doing everything plus your instructed circuits by @lloydirvinmma or conditioning much earlier on some of those days. Master Lloyd Irvin had given me a key so some nights I would leave there and go back to the gym. I wonder how my body would’ve held up if I hadn’t have done so much but, I know I wouldn’t have not done it... Rotational Core👉🏽 — 📝I have always enjoyed training, teaching, and learning about rotational power. The fact that some humans can throw a baseball 100mph is just fascinating to me. Here is a breakdown of some ways to develop and improve rotational power. . 🌲In addition to athletic endeavors, some of these movements are great for generalized trunk strengthening. Core rotation and power production is primarily a hip dominant movement. If a pitcher is having upper extremity issues, you need to look at their mechanics from the bottom up. In other words, everything is connected! . 🏔In most rotational athletic movements, the trunk acts as a rigid stabilizer with juuust the right amount of movement to be able to efficiently transfer power while mitigating energy leakage. Some of the athletes that excel at sports like golf, tennis, and baseball tend to have greater degrees of genetic laxity or hypermobility. It’s natural selection. Those particular athletes would see great benefit from the first and last exercises to learn to control their movement. . 🌏The lumbar and thoracic spine do not offer a ton of rotation when you look at individual segments. Excessive flexibility or separation from the shoulders to hips can actually be a risk factor for back injuries. This is a perfect example of when ‘improving mobility’ simply isn’t the catch-all answer. The key here is mobility must be well controlled via strengthening exercises like the ones above. . ♻️All rotational athletes should go through some sort of quick screening to classify their degree of genetic laxity. Sometimes this can be as easy as looking at their elbow extension to assess end range feel. ❤️ Appreciation I remember taking this photo. I was in Sydney attending a work conference. I had to sneak in my second weight training session for the day before heading out with clients for dinner. I was two months out from the @ifbbproleagueoz Victorian Championships. I was managing my corporate life, weight training, cardio and study with absolute ease. Looking back, I took those little luxuries for granted. I love being a mum. And with motherhood comes sacrifices and the unexpected feeling of loneliness. Like many new mothers, my first experience of prolonged loneliness coincided with a time in which I am ever really on my own. Here I am in the most isolated period of my life, spending it with the little human I love the most strapped to me all day, every day. When I look back, its almost as if when our tiny little fluffy hair monster emerged from my body, my old self fell away to make way for this new identity, The Mum. I do miss training ... a lot. It defined my identity for quite some time. I miss the routine. I miss the social interaction. I miss the opportunity it presented to demonstrate self care. And I know in time, I will have that opportunity once again to implement a more consistent routine. In the meantime, I have developed a far greater appreciation for what I was able to achieve, physically and psychologically. I have wonderful photos and memories to one day share with my daughter (and let’s hope I am not out of shape too much that she completely doesn’t recognise me 🤣). I want to say I will never take for granted the opportunity to train at the frequency and intensity I once did. As humans, we forget very easily. Lower Body Fat Training & Leg Workout Some women are butt girls, some are shoulder girls, others are leg girls. Im a leg girl. Ive always wanted big, strong and defined legs.😆 And whats super cool about women is that they can actually target lower body fat IF they eat and train in a way that coincides with their menstrual cycle. Most women are naturally a little thicker in the lower body area.... this is a result of our female hormone, estrogen. Estrogen has a HUGE impact on the shape of our body because it influences how, when and where we build muscle and store fat. Theres a window of opportunity to accelerate fat loss and muscle build when it comes to women that have a period. When Estrogen is high (the middle 2 weeks of your menstrual cycle) the body is less likely to burn fat and more likely to build muscle. Your body will handle carbs WAY better ... meaning youll be able to eat more carbs and store less of them as fat because youre highly insulin sensitive at this point. When Estrogen is low (last week and first week of your menstrual cycle), this is your window of opportunity to focus on fat loss- particularly in the belly and lower body. Happy Friday, everyone!! ⠀ ⠀ Yesterday’s workout felt sooo good! 🥵 I wanted to focus on using equipment and moves that I haven’t done in months so here we gooo... ⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣Reverse Hack Squat - I love a wider stance on this one! 4s / 12r ⠀ ⠀ Superset with: ⠀ ⠀ 2️⃣ Narrow Stance Hack Squat - keep your feet side by side and press your knees together throughout the entire squat - this will engage your outer quads more than a typical narrow squat. 4s / 10r ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣ Single Leg Deadlift - one of my favorite versions of SLDLs - I realllly feel my glute and hamstring regions. To give this move all of its benefits, add a calf raise at the top! 4s / 12-15r ea side ⠀ ⠀ Triset with: ⠀ ⠀ 4️⃣ Plated Sit-up / Sissy Squat Combo - totally made that up 🤣 but it’s the main gist of this full body move. This bench isn’t low enough to really get a gooood sissy squat in so I made it my own version. 4s / 8-10r ⠀ ⠀ Triset with: ⠀ ⠀ 5️⃣ SL Bulgarian Split Squats - I love a wide stance on these. Press up thru your front heel and nice and slow movements. 4s / 10r ea side⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 6️⃣ Single Leg Hamstring Curl - I love this version !! You’ll need a leg extension machine that allows proper range of motion. Keep a bend at your hips to really engage your hamstrings properly. 4s / 15r ea side⠀ ⠀ Superset with: ⠀ ⠀ 7️⃣ Leg Press Down - Gently press the platform down using your heel.
