Every day, 8 million pieces of plastic find their way into our oceans, killing hundreds of thousands of animals per year. Scientists have found that up to 90% of seabirds, 50% of whale and dolphin species, and 33% of sea turtles have all ingested plastic. And despite the fact that plastic is wreaking havoc on our environment, plastic production is still expected to increase exponentially. This needs to change. We have created a poster and accompanying text to highlight the plight of some of the UK’s rapidly disappearing wildlife, most of which is put at risk by human activities and loss of habitat. The poster was designed as part of the 26 Wild project—instigated by writing organisation 26 and @thewildlifetrusts charity. Based on words by longtime collaborator (and founder of 26) John Simmons, it explores the theme of ‘disappearance’. Recent analysis shows the UK is currently one of most nature-depleted countries in the world – the campaign aims to raise awareness of Britain’s endangered species as well as highlight the important work carried out by the Wildlife Trusts. 56 members of 26 were asked to choose an animal from a list of wildlife in danger. The brief was to create a centena, which is a 100-word-long piece of poetry or prose, that has the same three words at the beginning as it does at the end. While the animal’s name appears in the title, it does not appear in the centena itself – this emphasises the idea of animals disappearing. The poster created to promote the campaign is double-sided—on one side a bold typographic statement asks us to consider a world without the beautiful song of the nightingale, the other lists some of Britain’s wildlife which is most in danger. 26 is currently crowdfunding a book of poems to highlight our vulnerable species and raise vital funds for The Wildlife Trusts –. ‘It’s a snake eating its own tail inside a Rubik’s cube on top of a Baudrillard book resting on a M.C. Escher staircase’ – A visually associative conglomerate about the relationship between word and image. (Risography zine, 16pp, 32x24cm, edition of 200, printed and published in 2019 by @cancanpress in Mexico City) The zine was published as part of the Can Can Friends 2.0 project including contributions from @z_e_b_u and @mollydogson . I’ve noticed that I haven’t yet shared this project. Even though it’s been a while since I’ve done this publication, it still influences my work today and had a major impact on many projects which I’ve subsequently worked on. The zine is available for purchase directly at CanCan Press, Printed Matters, my online shop and a few selected retailers worldwide. 🌐 This contribution is a visual associative conglomerate about the relationship between word and image. What are letters today? The form urges itself in the foreground and the content falls back. Letters are cubistically deconstructed and separated from the claim, which is considered as a construction of the phonetic alphabet. A recursive typography that regresses to its original: the pictorial form – iconoclasm by non-referenciality. A paradox in which the content can not change, only the form, but the form is the content. This leads to a change in structure and evolution of signs. Semantic content is caught up in its visuality: A snake eating its own tail. Im so glad I saw this before logging off tonight. As an artist and activist myself, @banksys work and commitment to justice (especially around the refugee crisis) has lifted my heart off the floor in so many ways over the last 5 years, and this right now, could not have been more timely. This is a reminder of how things CAN be. This is more than just money. In fact if it was just down to money this wouldnt have even happened. A fierce heart for humanity is what allowed for this to happen, art was the way maker, money was the by product and THIS was / is the result. Im tired and emotional today so I thank you deeply for this Hope and Heart @banksy. I thank all fellow artists and activists. I thank all warriors, lightworkers, educators, truth speakers, change makers, doers and FEELERS. Feeling is what makes us act. This war on humanity has been driven by our numbness, apathy and incapacity to feel. 2020 is off to a flying start, both for me (my first-ever cover story is in @aircanada seatbacks now!), and for the @csasurfcanada national team athletes, who currently sit 10th in the world and are gearing up for the next qualification event for #tokyo2020, the first Olympic Games to include surfing. In October, I travelled to Tofino to see Canada’s surf capital in action for the annual all-women surf contest @queenofthepeak, and to meet the two Tofino-bred Olympic hopefuls: @mathea_olin and @petedevries. The surf community was beyond welcoming and I was lucky enough to have photographer @marcuspaladino as a local guide and surf interpreter. His jaw-dropping stills and video brought this piece to life. And a huge thanks to @kaye_pr and @tourismtofino! 110 WHALES SAVED! ❤️ ~ Volunteers, DPIPWE staff, local aquaculture workers and people within the Strahan community have worked throughout the week saving as many whales as possible on Tasmanias west coast. ~ A total of 110 pilot whales were rescued in Australias largest mass whale stranding. ~ Incident Controller and Parks and Wildlife Service manager Rob Buck said the volunteers and staff had worked long hours in cold conditions. ~ “Thank you to everyone involved for their efforts in such a complex rescue. The 2nd Vice Magazine of the year came out digitally back in May. We’d made the entire magazine thinking it would be printed. Halfway through we corrected articles and stories in response to COVID-19 highlighting what had changed and why. All covers were shot by contributors around the world during quarantine. Design by me. ⚡️ICYMI: On Friday, I officially submitted my application in pursuit of my wildest dream: to be a part of #SISWIMSEARCH2021 ✨ Sitting in an airplane, at the end of the runway, my finger hovered over “POST”. The engines spun up, we sped down the strip, and the wheels left the ground. My heart pounding, I took a deep breath and smashed that button. No looking back. Four hours and seven heart attacks later, we landed. I opened my phone to an outpouring of love, support, AND A #FEELGOODFUEL FEATURE!! 🤯🤩🙈 I am still SHOOK! Not to mention, I got to squeeze and share my excitement with the human who made my whole video possible, (@freshlead ) !♥️ It’s safe to say it was one of the BEST DAYS EVER... and felt... SO GOOD! Talk about #feelgoodfuel 🥰 I’ve learned it takes an immense amount of vulnerability and courage to make magic happen. So whatever that scary thing is that you just can’t stop thinking about ... go out and do it. Seriously, like right freakin’ now. 💫 & while you’re at it, go check out the four other incredible women featured in this highlight. 😍 Each one is beautiful, talented, and so so deserving of recognition. ✨Last week we launched A Magazine Reader 05 at Hordaland Kunstsenter in Bergen, Norway 🇳🇴. The zine was created during the Summer Academy of @kunstsenter, where @hankavdvoet and I hosted a workshop. It contains contributions by Randi Grov Berger, Henrik Koppen, Kristina Melbø Valvik, Ayatgali Tuleubek, Anne Cecilie Caroline Brunborg Lie, Mathijs van Geest, Ana Henriques Brotas, Ida Falck Øien, Bastian Düvet Haulefær and Erika Brandl. A Magazine Reader is a workshop in which a fashion magazine (mainstream, high – end) is being dissected, critically analyzed from various perspectives and put together again in an alternative form. The material from the magazine is used to create a new zine that gives insight into the cultural power and forms of value production that’s at the core of fashion media.
