I’m long overdue for an intro here on Instagram.  I’ve been meaning to do it for ages, but another task, project or wedding has kept me hopping!  So today, I’m on it!!!! So for those new to Midcoast Blooms, my name is Laura.  I’m the owner, grower, creator, and overall plant fanatic here at Midcoast Blooms.  My studio/shop is located in the beautiful Maine town of Damariscotta.  In my studio I create floral designs for all occasions with a passion for florals for life’s special events; baby.  You name it we’ll create something beautiful for it! In addition to designing I’m also a flower grower (dahlias are my OBSESSION) and a Slow Flowers Member I believe deeply in creating my designs with locally and American grown flowers and foliage as much as possible!  My studio/shop opened a few days before Valentine’s Day and 5 weeks later I turned the cooler off, gave my remaining flowers away, packed up the plants, closed up shop and went to work from home during the early days of COVID-19.  It was the forced intermission that was a shock to the system but out of that came my rekindled love for starting seeds and my expanded, ever growing gardens for 2020.  So aside from the dahlias in the shop there will be; specialty grasses (explosion, feather top, bunnytail, and northern sea oats), crespedia, carmel phlox, chocolate lace flower, various varieties of celosia, mini cherry tomatoes (harvested while green), and 3 varieties of scented geraniums (frosted, orange fizz, and chocolate mint). From this place we can truly give of ourselves, serving what we stand for in the world and also staying true to our own hearts. This is freedom, love, and compassion. Love is understanding and acceptance. Love is not protecting and cutting your own legs off because it helps someone else walk. It sounds odd to state it this way, but that’s how so many of us who endure abuse have essentially behaved. You are not wrong or stupid for doing so. You didn’t know. ✨Exciting life update: I’m moving to Austin, TX!✨ . . . It’s kinda crazy honestly, we’re moving at the end of September! Dan and I have been thinking a lot about the future and what we want out of life (living through a pandemic can have that effect...) And after a lot of discussion, we decided to leave San Francisco and start a new chapter in Austin. We have a great support system there and we’re so excited to be closer to family and our best friends @thehusbros (swipe to see 4 happy best friend faces that finally get to live in the same city again after 6 years) . . . We have absolutely LOVED living in SF. We have had some amazing adventures and made the greatest friends while living here. We will miss everyone so much! And of course I’ll miss California wine country🍇🍷 . . . Luckily, Austin is close to Texas wine country so I’ll still be able to go wine tasting and take in the gorgeous views of vines. My new goal is to find the best Texas wineries/wine! (Let me know if you have any recs!) . . . After 10 years in New York, I’ve decamped to the West Coast. Not sure it’s for life but it’s a nice upgrade from our tiny 1-bedroom that cost a million dollars a month. I once had a goal...I wanted to be a hairdresser. I went through cosmetology and did hair for years in a salon and during several LA Fashion Weeks. Fastforward a couple years and I realized I didn’t want to do hair forever. I really fell in love with fitness. I aspired to be a fitness model and I was successful, being hired on to a top team and traveling the world to promote the brand while being published in magazines. I realized I wasn’t passionate about fitness at all and left the scene. A couple years later I had another dream to open my own business. I have officially succeeded at this dream. My store front opens August 15th, 2020. My point is this, you can have several different dreams at different ages, at different stages of life... don’t stop dreaming and don’t stop pushing to make these goals happen. So I could write about my amazing #AZ trip in relation to these pics & how I was on a crazy high- but Im choosing to work with my present moment✨. Many of us are going through it, so I also want to share how REAL clinical depression is. I often go through my highs and lows as many of you know (and appreciate you all for always supporting my humanness). Typically after travels, I can take time to ground back into routine (not sure why I didnt carve that out in my schedule after visiting some crazy vortex energy)🙄! On top of that- getting deeper. Many of us deal with seasonal depression AND the state of the world is on our minds heavily. The air is heavy- elections are legit around the corner. Legends have passed away in 2020. We are worried about potential lockdowns again as numbers as rising. But what can we do? I can only share what I am working through and has been an outlet for me- which is major major self love and self care. Not resisting what IS. Trying my best to work with the energy I feel each day. Setting better boundaries. Doing little things that make my home feel uplifted. Tools like Reiki, incense, candles, epsom salt, lavender, trauma oils, getting fresh air in, plants, talking to supportive friends, reading positive quotes, and writing are all small things- but they do add up and can shift energy🙏🏽. I hope youre doing OK today, but know that if youre not- its also OK. Youre not alone. Sending you so much ❤️ tribe. 🖕🏻 MY BMI SAYS IM OVERWEIGHT ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I stopped paying attention to my weight and BMI a while ago. It was such a turning point for me in my wellness journey. I used to look to the scales for gratification and measure my success by the number. But all too often I was so disappointment by the digits I saw, even though I’d been working hard all week. It rarely reflected the healthy changes I had been making. It fluctuated and would make me angry if I gained even 0.5kg. I would get so depressed, emotional binge eat the whole kitchen and undo all the hard work I had done. So I decided to ditch the scales and focus on how I FEEL! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This has had such a positive impact on my journey and has meant I sustain my healthy habits 🌿 I focus on how I feel. The reduced bloating. Clearer skin. Less headaches. More energy. Fitter. Stronger muscles. Old clothes fitting again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I went to the gym yesterday for a body scan, as the one number I do look at is visceral fat (fat around your organs that you can have at any size) as this is super important to watch for your health. At the start of the year mine was 11. The healthy range is 1-9. Yesterday my scan showed that it was now 5 👏🏻💕 I was curious though what my weight and BMI was. I know I’ve lost a lot of weight but didn’t know how much as I’ve been focusing on how I feel and measuring by old clothes. I wondered if it would upset me looking at it but I felt strong enough in myself and proud of my efforts that I decided to look anyways and just not let it bother me. I laughed out loud. My BMI says that I’m still overweight. I laughed some more. So ridiculous. If I were to measure my success by my weight loss and BMI to fit into the “normal” category, then I hadn’t achieved my goals. I’m so glad that I don’t measure my success my the number on the scales anymore. I FEEL amazing! I fit back into old clothes. I’m fit. I’m strong. I’m happy. “Give yourself grace”. It’s a phrase I heard countless times after I miscarried, it’s a phrase I’ve said to others several times as well. We all need to remember to give ourselves grace, especially in the hard seasons, especially as mamas. I tried to be very intentional to allow my emotions grace, to cry when the tears came, to understand that it was ok to feel ok one minute and angry the next. However there is one area of grace I overlooked, giving my body grace. I had been in a consistent work out routine for about three months before my miscarriage and I had made so much progress, I felt so strong and had so much energy. Then all of a sudden my body needed space and time to heal. I had to stop working out for a couple weeks and when I tried to start up again, I went too hard, frustrated with the fact that I couldn’t perform at the same level. The next couple of times I managed to muster up the motivation I went through my workouts frustrated with myself and my body. My inner thoughts towards my body were negative and full of frustration. I think we can all relate to this on some level. I decided I needed to change the inner dialogue. As I went through my next yoga practice I actively changed my thoughts and began thinking things like, “my body is strong”, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made”, “my body is capable”, “my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”. It seems silly honestly, I know the power of our thoughts and words but doing something like that always seemed so weird to me, even if it was just in my head, but you know what? I had the most peaceful time during that workout, the frustration I was feeling left and grace found its way in its place. So if you find your inner dialogue about yourself or your body drifting towards negativity, give yourself grace today mama and change the dialogue. The beginning of the pandemic began just before spring. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed with so little improvement. We’ve reached over 200,000 deaths from COVID, thousands of small businesses are trying to survive if they haven’t already closed, people are struggling to get by, and it seems like there’s no end in sight. During times like these, we need to take it one day at a time to prevent anxiety overload. Take walks, enjoy nature, drink wine, get involved in the election, do whatever is possible for the desperate change we need in this country. Yesterday was a beautiful first day of fall. Our urban farm still has plenty of summer vegetables growing, and we’re looking forward to our first harvest of autumn crops - beets, carrots, arugula, spinach, radishes. I was so scared about killing this lipstick plant but now I have 4 inside and they are all doing so well. When you come out of the depression you was in your plants feel that too.
