Yesterday, the @marineanimalresponsesociety and the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative released the final report detailing the right whale mass mortality event that occurred in eastern Canada in 2019. From June to July, nine endangered right whales were found dead, and four right whales were observed entangled in fishing gear. Five of these whales received a complete necropsy to determine the cause of death, of which four, including the whale in this photograph, had evidence of severe acute trauma consistent with a vessel strike. Three of the four entangled whales were partially disentangled by rescuers. A rescue was not possible for the fourth animal and it was late found dead off New York State, US. “We must do better by these animals and all the other species who die accidentally by human activities. The alternative is that we lose them forever and that should be unacceptable to everyone.” - Tonya Wimmer, Executive Director of @marineanimalresponsesociety The full report can be found by visiting the link in my bio, or direct at http://marineanimals.ca/what-we-do/research/ — #northatlanticrightwhale #rightwhales #rightwhale #narw - @nickhawkinsphotography on Instagram

Qui Courage Spending a cold night wading through damp grass isn’t everybody’s idea of fun. Thats exactly what the intrepid participants from the current Nightscapes and Startrails course did on Friday September 11th. I drove out there in the late afternoon to scout the area in daylight. The group came out to meet me at 9pm at an old disused rail bridge over the Boorowa River for an evening shooting Milky Way Nightscapes. The northwest location was chosen to give the group some extra time under clear skies from cloud predicted to be moving in from the south during the night. I had scouted two locations beforehand, the old rail bridge over the river that aligned with the setting Milky Way and a canola field south of the road for some circumpolar (circular) star trails somewhat later, after midnight. Some chose to stay in the pub in Boorowa for the night while others headed back to Canberra arriving at 3:00am. Thanks to all participants for your courage, patience and great company. Heart Nebula in Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulfur. What powers the Heart Nebula? The large emission nebula dubbed IC 1805 looks, in whole, like a heart. The nebulas glow -- as well as the shape of the gas and dust clouds -- is powered by by stellar winds and radiation from massive hot stars in the nebulas newborn star cluster Melotte 15. This deep telescopic image maps the pervasive light of narrow emission lines from atoms of hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur in the nebula. The field of view spans just over two degrees on the sky, so that it appears larger than four times the diameter of a full moon. The cosmic heart is found in the constellation of Cassiopeia, the boastful mythical Queen of Aethiopia . The planned landing site for NASA’s Perseverance rover was facing Earth this morning about 4 hours before launch. The specific target, Jezero crater, is too small to be resolved from this distance (60 M miles / 90 M km), but the surrounding area of dark volcanic rock can be seen (Syrtis Major). After watching this video on searching for and processing Hubble Space Telescope images the other day I was inspired to try this out. After having a potentially clear night clouded out last night, I decided to give it a whirl. I searched out data on M51 and was pleasantly surprised at the data I found. I ran this through my usual processing workflow in Pixinsight in addition to blending the two red channels and doing a channel combination to get a RGB color image to work with. The image scale on this data is 0.05 arcsec per pixel and I used the high resolution files (~420MB per mono channel). This is just about 2 hrs of integration time across the 4 channels used to make up this image. If you want to give this a try the shortcut to the data I used is here (https://archive.stsci.edu/prepds/m51/datalist.html). You can find more info on how to find the data and process by watching the following video by Cuiv the Lazy Geek. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgklkUPwPNA&pp=wgIECgIIAQ%3D%3D&feature=push-sd&attr_tag=stzWpn8wKsp-dNBS%3A6 - @dainjason on Instagram

If you ever found yourself on Venus, you’d be destroyed in moments. The pressure at the surface is thought to be up to 100 times greater than what is found on Earth, temperatures are around 464 °C, and the air is more than 96% carbon dioxide. And yet, life on Venus suddenly isn’t the most unimaginable possibility. A new paper published in Nature Astronomy Monday reveals that Venus’s clouds contain traces of phosphine. The new findings are far from evidence that there once was or still is life on Venus (an extremely inhospitable planet in more ways than one), but its presence nonetheless suggests there’s some sort of unknown activity happening there, biological or otherwise. The new findings suggest that if life ever existed on Venus, either now or in the past, it might actually be present in the air itself. Click the link in our bio to learn how gas spotted in Venus’s clouds could be a sign of alien life. What is the universe made of? From what we can see, the universe appears to be mostly empty, with the occasional star or galaxy spread out across the cosmos. Most of the visible matter in our universe is composed of a single element: hydrogen. Hydrogen makes up 74% of all the matter we can see in the universe. Helium makes up 24%. The remaining 2% contains all other elements on the periodic table. This observation makes sense given that hydrogen is the simplest element and was the only atom to form in abundance after the Big Bang. For other elements to form, stars needed to fuse hydrogen atoms together to form heavier elements. Those heavier elements are then dispersed across the universe when stars die in supernova explosions, spreading their atoms across space. However, it turns out that all of the matter we can see makes up only 5% of the universe. ———————————————————————————— In the 1930s, Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky made one of the most important discoveries in cosmology. In 1933, Zwicky began a series of observations of the Coma Cluster of galaxies. His goal was to determine the mass of the entire cluster. When Zwicky successfully determined the Coma Cluster’s mass, he had stumbled upon one of the greatest mysteries of our universe. Zwicky found that the cluster was around 400 times more massive than what he had predicted. Zwicky had used the luminosity of the cluster to determine its predicted mass, and then used the velocities of the galaxies to determine their true mass. When he discovered this gigantic discrepancy in mass, he realized that there must be some kind of invisible matter causing galaxies within the cluster to move much faster than they should. He coined the term “dark matter” to describe this missing mass. At first, Zwicky’s ideas were dismissed. As the years went on, however, astronomers began finding more evidence that the universe contains this strange dark matter. (Post continues in the comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️) - @astrophysics_ on Instagram

Beautiful dark and reflection nebulae region processed by @llamasheaber from a PlaneWave CDK17 at @observatorioelsauce in Chile! More from Nicolas here, NGC 5367 is a reflection nebula associated with the cometary globule CG12 in the Centaurus constellation. Discovered in 1976 on an ESO/SRC Sky Survey plate taken with the UK Schmidt telescope, CG12 is in contrast to most other Cometary Globules, because it is far away from the galactic disk. The nebula NGC 5367 (also catalogued as IC 4347) reflects light from two bluish stars of the binary system h4636 (the stars are from spectral type B4 and B7). The Fireworks Galaxy (NGC 6946) and Open Star Cluster (NGC 6939) in the constellation Cepheus. The Fireworks Galaxy is approximately 25 million light years from Earth and is relatively small measuring about 40,000 light years in diameter. That’s less than half the size of our Milky Way galaxy. NGC 6939 is almost 4000 light years away and contains over 600 stars. The California Nebula (NGC 1499). Is an emission nebula in the constellation of Perseus with an obvious California shape. It is a large nebula measuring about 5 full moons across in the sky. Part of what makes it large is it’s relatively close to the Earth at about 1000 light years. It also is large in reality measuring 100 light years in length. Much of the nebula is excited by the hot blue star Xi Persei to the right of the nebula. Heres a beautiful nebula😍🌌 IC418, also known as Spirograph nebula🌌 , is a planetary nebula located in the constellation of the Lepre✨ at a distance of about 2000 light years from our solar system☀️. It is likely that the star⭐ originally present in the center of IC 418 🌌was in the past a red giant and the nebula would therefore be what remains of the outermost layers after they were expelled. The remains of the stellaare⭐ present in the center of the nebula🌌. Such an evolution will probably happen for our Sole but only in a few billions of years. Andromeda - Our Galactic Neighbour ! Andromeda a.k.a M31, NGC 224 is the nearest Major Galaxy to our Milkyway, located at a distance of 250 million Light-years ( thats just ~2,365,182,600,000,000,000,000 km ;) ). Its also the farthest object that can be seen with naked eyes from Earth. Apart from the Galaxys Core, its Dust Lane and Satellite Galaxies M32 & M110 are prominent in the image. Oh, I forgot to tell you. Andromeda is on a collision course with our Milkyway, currently approaching at a speed of 110kmps, but dont worry, we have got 4 billion years to figure out a way. READ ME: TURN ON THE BRIGHTNESS TO FULL. Shot andromeda Galaxy last night.☺️ My first try on shooting a Galaxy. This picture is cropped and stretched a lot to pull out all the possible details of the Galaxy. Also had to post process with dodge and burn and many layers or curves and details in photoshop to make the clouds even more visible. Its very far from us thats why it is very hard to capture from just a camera, but still i did it. Andromeda galaxy is also known as spiral galaxy, distance is 2.5 million Light Years away from Earth.😇 Also, Andromeda Galaxy is slowly approaching towards our Milkyway Galaxy with a speed of 113 km/second and will endup colliding with our Galaxy in 4.5 billion years, its the twice the size of our milkyway galaxy with its own satellite Galaxies. So after the collision occurs after 4billion light years, the galaxy will called Milkymeda Galaxy(Milkyway+ Andromeda) But thats a long course, earth have to think about other problems before like, the sun will become a red supergiant swallowing all the planets in some next 2 billion years. So yes, we will not able to see the collision, not even the earth and our solar system will.🤗 But yes, this is a shot i’m really proud of❤️, the feeling after getting the output was priceless, super happy, but yeah more beautiful pictures are coming on its way. What more we can expect without a telescope and just with a camera.😇 Again, travelled 2.5million light years in One Hour, hope you enjoyed the view.❤️ Be Original #princetuhin . . . . #andromeda #andromedagalaxy #galaxy #science #space #photography #astrophysics #astro_photography_ #astronaut #astrology #astrophotography #astro #astronomy #astroworld #astronomy_eye #astrography_ #spacetime #spacex #beautiful #night #stars - @princetuhin on Instagram

In what could be a major space breakthrough, a group of researchers from the U.S. and China have, for the very first time, found evidence for the existence of a potential planet outside the Milky Way Galaxy. If this discovery is confirmed, the said planet will be named M51-ULS-1b. The first ever exoplanet—a planet outside our solar system—was found in the year 1992. Since then, thousands of exoplanets have been discovered, but this is the first time an extragalactic planet, i.e. a potential planet outside our galaxy, has been discovered. This new world is situated approximately 23 million light-years away from the Earth, and lies within the M51 Whirlpool Galaxy, which is located relatively close to Ursa Major. . . . #space #galaxy #milkyway #saturn #solarsystem #spacenews #weather #weatherchannel #theweatherchannel - @weatherindia on Instagram

M27 - Dumbbell Nebula - 1,200 light-years from Earth The Dumbbell Nebula was the first “planetary nebula” discovered. The round shape as viewed through a telescope resulted in it being compared to a planet, while in reality the object is an old star which has shed its outer layers into space. Image taken with my Celestron 6” Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope on AVX mount and Sony A7sii camera, 20x60” unguided and stacked with DeepSkyStacker. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #dumbbellnebula #telescope #stargazing #astrophotography #astrophoto #ig_astrophotography #spacepics #deepsky #darksky #universetoday #amazinguniverse #celestron #sonya7sii #sonyalphasclub #deepskystacker - @mostly_star_stuff on Instagram

German scientists have just finished upgrading a solar telescope called GREGOR at the Teide Observatory in the Canary Islands, and the result is a spectacular new set of images of our star. GREGOR began its observations in 2012 as Europes largest solar telescope and the upgrade project began in 2018. The upgrades included work on the telescopes optics and control systems, repainting the observatory to reflect less light and interfere less with observations, and implementing new scheduling policies to improve the scientific output of observations. . . . . . Moon Pairs and the Synodic Month Image Credit & Copyright: Marcella Giulia Pace Explanation: Observe the Moon each night and its visible sunlit portion will gradually change. In phases progressing from New Moon to Full Moon to New Moon again, a lunar cycle or synodic month is completed in about 29.5 days. They look full, but top left to bottom right these panels do show the range of lunar phases for a complete synodic month during August 2019 from Ragusa, Sicily, Italy, planet Earth. For this lunar cycle project the panels organize images of the lunar phases in pairs. Each individual image is paired with another image separated by about 15 days, or approximately half a synodic month. As a result the opposite sunlit portions complete the lunar disk and the shadow line at the boundary of lunar night and day, the terminator, steadily marches across the Moons familiar nearside. For extra credit, what lunar phase would you pair with the Moon tonight? #apod #nasa #space #science #astronomy #moon - @astronomypicturesdaily on Instagram

M45: The Pleiades Star Cluster🌌Comment what you see🔭 ⠀ ⠀ Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as dusty as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The featured exposure took over 12 hours and covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observers eyesight. ⠀ Are you ready to discover the wonders of the universe🔭 Follow @astronomyshooters ⠀ Credit & Copyright: Marco Lorenzi (Glittering Lights) ⠀ ⠀ #universe #astronomy #nebula #nebulae #nebulas #orionnebula #orion #nebulosa #nasa #spacetime #spacetravel #deepspace #stargazing #deepsky #natgeospace #astrography #astrophoto #spaceexploration #astro_photography_ #astrophotos #backyardastronomy #astronomyphotography #spacetoday #spaceporn #spacepics #telescope #supernova #supernovas #hubble #hubbleclassic - @astronomyshooters on Instagram

Each of these Hubble Space Telescope snapshots reveals four distorted images of a background quasar surrounding the central core of a foreground massive galaxy. The multiple quasar images were produced by the gravity of the foreground galaxy, which is acting like a magnifying glass by warping the quasar’s light in an effect called gravitational lensing. The images were taken between 2003 and 2004 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. Credit: NASA, ESA, S.H. Limbal stem cells are the only source of corneal epithelial cells and they must undergo self-renewal,proliferation, and differentiation to maintain the ocular surface and achieve wound healing. The current failure of pharmacologic treatments for Neurotrophic Keratopathy is the result of the gap in our basic understanding of the paracrine crosstalk between the corneal nerve fibers and the epithelial cell populations. Our lab is actively investigating the role of Schwann cells in corneal epithelial healing, as well as the role of the TrkA/NGF receptor in LSC function to define the ligand-receptor interactions regulating the activity of LSCs and the limbal niche. #cornealneurotization #neurotrophickeratopathy #nerve - @greg_borschel on Instagram

WHOLE NIGHT PERSEID MOSAIC: It took almost 2 years of work, almost 450 hours of postprocessing and many hours of other #hardwork, but it was worth it. In this whole-night #panorama you can count 407 #Perseid meteors captured during 8 nights (51 hours total) and registered to the panorama of sky taken during peak of #Perseids in 2018 over #Kolonica Observatory, #Slovakia. Data were calibrated, color corrected and precisely photometrically added to the mosaic so the viewer could better understand some specifications of the most #popular #annual #meteorshower. Such as distribution, color of #meteors, where they mostly appear in the sky... Much more here: https://www.astronom.cz/horalek/?p=6509. Enjoy the upcoming Perseids as well! -------------------------- CELONOČNÍ MOZAIKA PERSEID: Zabralo to skoro 2 roky práce, více jak 450 hodin čistého času a z toho 51 hodin snímání oblohy v průběhu 8 nocí. Ale ta práce stála za to! (a napomohlo k tomu nucené volno v době covidu). Na celonoční mozaice Perseid z srpna 2018, zachycé nad kolonickou observatoří, napočítáte celkem 407 rojových meteorů. Díky důkladnému zpracování (včetně kalibrace obrazů a barevné korekce) můžete snadno vniknout do tajů tohoto každoročního meteorického roje. Například chápat jejich distribuci na obloze, barevnou proměnu nebo kde nejčastěji meteory lze díky tzv. výběrovému efektu vidět. Astronomers have found a potential sign of life in the high atmosphere of neighbouring Venus: hints there may be bizarre microbes living in the sulfuric acid-laden clouds of the hothouse planet. According to the study published in Mondays journal Nature Astronomy, two telescopes in Hawaii and Chile spotted in the thick Venutian clouds the chemical signature of phosphine, a noxious gas that on Earth is associated with life. The astronomers hypothesize a scenario for how life could exist on the inhospitable planet where temperatures on the surface are around 425°C with no water. The planet contains droplets with tiny amounts of water but mostly sulfuric acid that is a billion times more acidic than whats found on the Earth. The phosphine could be coming from some kind of microbes, probably single-cell ones, the researchers said. . . . #astrohpysicist #asterism #astronomer #astronaut #cosmonaut #cosmology #earth #venus #mars #planets #solarorbiter #aliens #alienlife #magnetic #elonmusk #spectrum #science #aryabhatta #artist #simulation #microbes #water #atmosphere #phosphine #stargazingmumbai_team🔭 #stargazingmumbai - @stargazingmumbai on Instagram
