#Repost @nurul_yazid (@get_repost) ・・・ Whip coral shrimp can be found on a whip coral and can grow up to a maximum of 15mm. They are not so easy to spot as they can camouflage themselves well on the whip coral. They come in several colors based on what color the whip coral is. They usually come in pairs with the female being slightly larger than the male. The good thing about photographing them is that they hardly move. So if you’re looking to practice your macro photography, these are the prefect subjects. 😊 _ . . . #underwaterphotography #underwater #underwaterworld #underwaterphotographer #uwphotography #uwphoto #scubadiving #scuba #scubadiver #diving #divermag #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #macrophotography #underwatermacro #underwatermacrophotography #plongée #photooftheday #picoftheday #yourshotphotographer #uwpic #uwpics #photography #blackbackground #crustacean #indonesia #lonelyplanet #earthcapture #sea - @divemag_international on Instagram

We talk a lot about fish as food, but what about a fishs food? 🤔⠀ ⠀ More specifically, how DO fish eat without swallowing loads of water?⠀ ⠀ According to Ashleigh Arton, MSC Senior Impact Officer, the answer is simple: they dont have to worry about swallowing water thanks to an impressive gill system. ⠀ ⠀ Gills allow fish to extract the oxygen from the water, in a way similar to human lungs extracting oxygen from air. ⠀ ⠀ Before food meets the gills, many fish have a special filter that allows water to flow over the gills and food to go down their throats.⠀ ⠀ What weird questions do you have about our ocean? Drop them in the comments below and someone at the MSC just might answer it!⠀ ⠀ =================⠀ Post Credit and Attribution:⠀ ⠀ Information: Ask an Ocean Expert, MSC⠀ Image Credit: petrescudaniel via iStock⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #weirdscience #oceanwonders #gills #fish #closeupfish #marinestewardshipcouncil #mscbluefish #seafood #sustainableseafood #natureiscool #protecttheocean #catfish #marinebiology #biologist #animalfacts #weirdfacts #rarefacts - @mscbluefish on Instagram

Marine Iguanas are the only lizards on Earth that spends time in the ocean. Marine iguanas can dive more than 65 feet (20 m) underwater and stay under for up to 30 minutes. They are also only found in the Galápagos. They reach about 4.5 ft in length. Marine iguanas are also known for their very efficient salt glands, where they “sneeze” out salt. Because they feed underwater, they ingest a large amount of saltwater. In order to prevent dehydration, they must expel salt without expelling water, so they have specialized glands that remove salt from their blood. Once a more commonly seen species in gardens than now starlings are Red listed due to a marked decline. The ocean is vital to all life on earth, but it remains largely unexplored. @noaaoceanexploration, the only federal organization dedicated to exploring the deep ocean, aims to change that by working with partners to advance ocean exploration in the US Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends ~200 nautical miles off the US coast. You might know OER from the Okeanos livestreams of deep-sea expeditions. This year, OER’s expeditions on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer were postponed, but OER is supporting several partner efforts, including a late September expedition on @nautiluslive to explore deep-sea methane seeps, ocean habitats that are hot spots of biodiversity. Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) are often timid and tuck deeper into their den when approached, but every now and then you get a curious octopus. Each of their eight arms are controlled by a large grouping of neurons (basically tiny brains, 1 per arm!) and their suckers are sensitive to both taste and touch, so curious individuals will often wrap up your camera and arms in their tentacles as they explore. - @lonelyspruce on Instagram

#DYK, while red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) used to be abundant along the California coast between Mendocino County and San Luis Obispo, they are now a more rare sighting, experts believe as a result of over harvesting. Abalone are characterized by their strong muscular foot and large shell, with their ability to suction onto rocks as their main defense against predators. Once they have clamped down, it’s difficult to move them. They are capable of moving around along the seafloor but tend to remain in the same small area for their entire lives! As a result of this sedentary lifestyle, they can easily become covered with marine growths and serve as refuge for other small creatures like algae, sponges, barnacle, bryozoan and hydroids. In fact, as many as 90 species of small gastropods have been found living on one shell! 😮 ~~~ Since the recent collapse of kelp forest along the northern California coast, distributions of intertidal organisms in the area like abalone, sea stars, and sea urchins have changed dramatically. To help understand the worrisome changes occurring along our shoreline habitat, Greater Farallones Association is joining researchers at Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network - MARINe (@marine_pacificrockyintertidal) to monitor several sites for abalone, sea urchins, and sea stars through our LiMPETS Monitoring program (@limpetsnews). This effort will not only help track species, but also aid in our work to recover kelp forest in northern California. What type of materials can be used to make #artificialreefs? Vogue statues maybe? Artificial #reefs, in the #Caribbean as well such as this one in #Grenada, can be made from structures such as: (1) #Shipwrecks. Sinking #ships for wreck #divingsites is the practice of scuttling old ships to produce artificial reefs (2) Sinking #oilrigs. #RigstoReefs is the practice of converting decommissioned #offshoreoil and #petroleum #rigs into artificial reefs (3) Concrete structures (pictured). Today, between 8 and 12 million tons of new plastic enter the ocean every single year. And this was before the pandemic. ⤵ We now know that, in 2020 alone, plastic polymers will be used to produce 129 billion face masks and 65 billion gloves every month to keep front-line health care workers safe. None of these items are recyclable. Yet beyond these essential items, the modern plastics industry has been taking advantage of the pandemic to further increase its profits, strategically planting unfounded fears and exploiting concerns over surface transmission to encourage greater consumption of all single-use plastic items. We’ve seen pressure by the industry to delay, hinder, or even roll back single-use plastic bans in favor of disposables, especially as restaurants prepare to re-open for business and offer meals to-go. Therefore, it is paramount that we reject the business as usual scenario and expand policies that can push back against industry efforts. - @DuneIves, Managing Director at @LonelyWhale Read more about the plastics crisis and how we CAN create lasting, systemic change through our new journey, Material Change, on @OnlyOne. - @marcheplace on Instagram

The octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda. Around 300 species are recognised, and the order is grouped within the class Cephalopoda with squids, cuttlefish, and nautiloids. It is one of the most fascinating creatures on this planet of ours, and truly magnificent to watch! 🐙 ———————————~———————————— 🖥 wanderlustvlog.com 🌴 @wanderlustvlog ✈️ #wanderlustvlog ✉️ info@wanderlustvlog.com 📷 by @krystalklear ———————————~———————————— #oahu #hawaii #oahuhawaii #underwater_world_ #octopussy • #weltreise #doyoutravel #inspiredtraveller #globewanderer #worldtravelig #travelexploring #exploringtheworld #natgeotravel #worldnomads #traveldudes #travelblog #travelblogger #travelingthroughtheworld #travelcaptures #letsgoeverywhere #travelawesome #travellershouts #passportready #cooltravelpix #wonderfulglobe #secratescapes #postcardsfromtheworld #getaway #traveltheworld @natgeotravel @lonelyplanet @travelbloggeres - @wanderlustvlog on Instagram

Peacock mantis shrimp 👊🏽💥 Did you know that these crustaceans have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, containing millions of light-sensitive cells?!?!?! With 16 color-receptive cones (compared to humans, who have just three), the peacock mantis shrimp can detect ten times more color than a human, including ultraviolet light. A mantis shrimp’s punch is no joke it has the ability to strike at the speed of a .22 caliber bullet 🥊 #mantisshrimp #peacockmantisshrimp #scuba #diving #scubadiving #uw #underwater #followmydives #buceo #dive #oceanlover #islandlover #divingphoto #mergulho #duiken #tauchen #plongee #submarinismo - @followmydives_ on Instagram

On the 8th January, the Apex Harmony crew were out patrolling the nets and drum lines on the Gold Coast when they came across a large dead Great Hammerhead shark in a net off Tallebudgera Beach. Great Hammerhead sharks are classified as endangered under the IUCN Red List, with populations under pressure from government shark control programs, commercial and IUU fishing. Sea Shepherd Australia spokesperson Jonathan Clark said “Once again, we see another endangered species which has never posed a threat to ocean users die unnecessarily. These nets do nothing more than indiscriminately kill marine life while providing a false sense of security to ocean users.” “It is time the Queensland Government makes good on their election promise to provide effective non-lethal shark monitoring, control and incident prevention measures to protect ocean users and marine life.” said Mr Clark. - @nosharkcullofficial on Instagram

Waiting for dinner like... Went on a dive the other day with @nautisub_san_vito in Sicily, Italy. Virginia and Roberto run the dive center in San Vito lo Capo, if you happen to be around, you should pop in to say hi. It was the first time diving in the Mediterranean Sea and, being used to Caribbean and cenotes, everything was new and exciting. A ton of colorful nudibranchs, gorgonian sea fans, sponges, sea breams and octopi hidden in wall crevices. Scatterd on the sea bed is pretty common to see anchors and pottery jars, that once carried olive oil and wine, some dated back to the 4th BC. Wow! On the dive I met @daniele70corsini, the talented photographer behind this shot, coming along for some macro adventures. The wonderful Mediterranean blue is full of wonders, and history! The use of masks and gloves has become an inevitable habit in many parts of the planet due to the world health crisis caused by the Wuhan coronavirus. But if we dont recycle those materials properly, they can affect the environment: predictions show that billions of masks and gloves will end up in the ocean. Even if its not the most immediate threat, the shift in the chemistry of the water is certainly a bigger problem than the virus. These times of change could be a good opportunity to change our lifestyles and learn to live without plastic, or at least reducing its use as much as we can. And when we cant, we should try to prevent plastic waste from reaching the sea. - @thegreenwars on Instagram
