Teela @mummaof2cubs and her 2 cubs have positioned their bee hotel south facing, 1 metre above ground level and with no vegetation blocking the entrance. Meet Marisa Papetti, beekeeper extraordinaire and owner of @mariesbeeswa. 🐝 Marisa is known for her fabulous honey, which she sells online and delivers personally to local buyers. She loves to educate people about the bees and their importance in our world. She also teaches popular cheese-making classes, which she recently began offering online. 🍯 I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the kitchen. We will be officially be releasing four new products in September. A Honey Oxymel, Ginger/Lemon Creamed Honey, Extreme Hot Honey and a Mother Honey for new moms. This is why we wanted to put the spotlight on 7 organizations that took their hive project to the next level, increasing their commitment towards the environment and bringing about change at their scale. And this—this is why we do what we do. Because choices we make collectively to support honey bees will benefit all pollinators, and ultimately, all living beings. Bees are REALLY important – and not just honey bees but also the over 4,000 different species of Native American bees. In fact, the honey bee, remarkable as it is, doesn’t know how to pollinate a tomato or an eggplant flower, while some native bees are masters at this. 🌻🐝 Over the past 10 years, weve heard a lot about the shocking disappearance of honey bees. However, many people dont realize is that Native bees are dying off as well! Fortunately, there are some conservation superheroes on a mission to save these bees! In 2013, natural history photographer Clay Bolt set out on an adventure to meet, photograph and tell the stories of many of these beautiful, beneficial insects. Soon he came across a specimen of a rusty-patched bumble bee in a scientific collection and learned about its tragic decline. Determined to use his photography to create more awareness about the insects demise, Clay worked with partners to create a film, which he then shared across the country on behalf of the bee, from small venues to a rare opportunity to present it on Capitol Hill. In January 2017 these efforts paid off, and the rusty-patched bumble bee became the first species of native North American bee to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. In 2019, Bolt became the first photographer to document a living Wallaces Giant Bee—the worlds largest bee, which was thought to be extinct for nearly 40 years. Clay Bolt will be at Panama Rocks for the Wild America Nature Festival on July 27 & 28. During his engaging presentation, he will discuss North America’s native bees, the important roles that they play in our lives, and let us know what we can all do to help save them. “Smoke em, if you got em.” There’s a few times in which our smoker went out or we forgot our smoker back home and we are an hour away and those inspections were memorable... because they were horrible. Bees have an amazing sense of smell and they also use smell to communicate. We use smoke to help our girls associate the smell of intrusion with the smell of smoke (hopefully when we are suited up before hand) and not the smell of us as...well, us. With our perfumes, sweat, smelly armpits—both good and bad—and such, the last thing you want is for your bees to associate your smell with danger, invasion, intrusion or disturbance. Because once they smell it, there’s no undoing that. The other reason we use smoke is because bees communicate through scent. And their alarm pheromone smells like bananas. Using smoke keeps your girls from smelling bananas and going bananas. Essentially like putting a hand over their mouths and calmly whispering to them “shhhhh.” Less panic, less stings, less stress for us and the bees which results in more patience, slower movements and more care given while doing an inspection. There is only one food that is truly off limits during the first year of life and that is honey. You can give your baby almost anything that they can consume safely without being a chocking hazard with the exception of honey. This includes all products that are cooked or baked with honey. That is because they might contain Clostridium Botulinum spores that can survive cooking and baking. This bacteria can impact your babys developing intestines and can cause the release of toxins that lead to infant botulinum. We don’t need to tell you just how hard working honeybees are either. But we would feel a sting of regret if we didn’t give you some of the numbers from the bees perspective. 150,000 bees live and die between the middle of May to mid August to continue the life of the colony as a whole. A honeybee guard bee can sting other insects multiple times, but the stinger, because it is barbed gets stuck in humans’ skin and will result in the death of the bee. A hive at peak capacity can be anywhere from 80-90,000 bees and the queen lays up to 2,500 eggs a day or the equivalent of her body weight! A single cell in the hive is visited at least 1,000 a day by a worker or nurse bee. Most hives die through disease and deformities caused by varroa mites. Which if it’s size were comparative to humans it would be a rock about the size of a dinner plate on your gut. A single bee will only produce 1/12th a teaspoon on honey in her entire lifespan. 4 million flowers are made to make 22 lbs of honey or 125,000 flowers for one jar of our medium honey. (Which is $12 in our store!) A bee flaps its wings 11,400 beats per minute and the collective distance would be the same as circumnavigating the globe for a single pound of honey. Each hive will produce anywhere from 40-150lbs of surplus honey (which is for us!) so that’s a lot of world traveling! Put another way that’s equal to flying the distance of the earth to the moon every day to find food! Foragers will fly up to 6 miles from the hive to forage on a flower. But usually more like 2 miles. Honeybees more often than not die while out flying and foraging and are either too exhausted or damaged from flight to make it back home. Honeybees must consume 17-20lbs of honey to produce a single pound of comb. Bees maintain temperature of their nest from 92-93 degrees despite outside temperatures that can range from 100 to -40. Honeybees pull nectar out of the combs and fan the nectar in order to get the water consistency to a perfect 18% All of this is not possible without respect, honorable husbandry and honest to goodness hard work. With the onset of COVID-19, beekeepers across the country found a shortage of queens available for their apiary function. Mini operators in Alberta depend on importation of queen stocks and have never practised self-sufficient management. An exciting time to be a beekeeper here in Alberta, is the present time. Beekeeping industries are changing around the world; food production, commodity prices, and the economy, are all things that are being reworked, are under threat, or need to become more self-sufficient. Alberta beekeepers are feeling the crunch of closed borders, difficulty in getting labour, and the expense of doing business. Queen production will decrease these issues and increase not only capacity of the operations but also the quality of stocks that are being developed locally. I think the best thing that can come out of all of this in the world of beekeeping is self-sufficiency.
