The worlds oceans feed more than 3.5 billion people. And in 20 years that figure may double. The sea therefore has the potential to feed humanity but we must urgently change the way we use it. Around 6,000 years ago men realized that they had no future simply by hunting or gathering. Thus was born at that time agriculture and livestock. However in the Sea we are still collectors. We have been taking out for centuries without putting anything inside. That is why about 90% of fish stocks are overexploited or depleted according to FAO. On land however: we plow, fertilize, sow, water and wait. In the Sea to collect we do not need to do all that, it is enough to leave areas for marine life to reproduce. If we want to continue fishing we have to protect. Marine protected areas without fishing generate a spectacular benefit to fishermen. It seems urgent to me that we change our mentality to the way we use marine resources. #mediterranean 🇪🇸 Los océanos del mundo alimentan A más de 3.5 billones de personas. Y en 20 años esa cifra puede doblarse. El mar por lo tanto, tiene el potencial para alimentar a la humanidad pero debemos urgentemente cambiar nuestra forma de utilizarlo. Hace unos 6.000 años los hombres se dieron cuenta que no tenían futuro simplemente cazando o recolectando. Así nació por entonces la agricultura y la ganadería. Sin embargo en el Mar aún somos recolectores. Llevamos siglos sacando sin poner nada dentro. Por eso cerca del 90% de los stocks de peces están sobreexplotados o agotados según la FAO. En tierra sin embargo: aramos, abonamos, sembramos, regamos y esperamos. En el Mar para recolectar no necesitamos hacer todo eso, basta con dejar zonas para que la vida marina se reproduzca. Si queremos seguir pescando tenemos que proteger. Las zonas marinas protegidas sin pesca generan un espectacular beneficio a los pescadores. Although it sounds scary to be pulled toward the bottom of the ocean it really is a magical feeling. You are able to completely relax your body which conserves oxygen, and makes a long dive feel peaceful and relaxing. Once you reach the bottom, there is even more fun to be had. Your feet will settle into the sand, your hands will fall to your side, and you are able to “walk” along. I imagine that walking on the bottom of the ocean is a similar feeling to walking on the moon. The first time we met a comet, we blew a hole in it; for the sake of science of course! In 2005 NASA sent a probe (pictured) to crash into a comet orbiting between Mars and Jupiter in order to check out what was beneath the surface. The Deep Impact mission was successful but the debris from the collision messed up their plan, and they didn’t get to observe the results for 6 years. When they did, they found that the impact excavated about 5 million kilograms of ice and another 10 to 25 million kilograms of dust. So while comets are often called “dirty snowballs,” the results from Deep Impact suggest that “icy dirtballs” might be a better name. MOTIVATION MONDAY: recognition of California’s magical underwear places, Marine Life Protection Act. In 1999, the California legislature identified the need to re-examine and re-design California’s marine protected area system to increase its coherence and it’s effectiveness of protecting the states marine life, habitats, and ecosystems. One of the first things we did when we arrived to New Zealand was buy a fish bowl to put the camera in so we could take some split under/over water shots. In 6 months we only got to use it once, toward the end, but how fitting that it was a silver fern shot! Well wrap up our NZ series with this icon of the country. We had such a wonderful time and even with 6 months we still didnt manage to do everything we wanted to do! Shouldve gotten a 12 month visa instead. ❤️ - @palebluewanders on Instagram

«Plastic and whales» Water plays a big role in this project (water in the park and a view of the river). In this picture I wanted to hyperbolize this connection. I wanted to show turbid water (which still does not lose its beauty) as a continuation of the previously mentioned pollution topic. I did not want to create a picture of a post-apocalyptic flooded city. I wanted to give a feeling of weird dream. When real objects meet those that cannot be there. This picture is not some kind of manifesto or appeal. This is a strange dream of an ordinary resident of HUYA. Spot - Almonda Location - Alcanena The spring of the Almonda river (or Olho do Moinho da Fonte) is located on the southeastern ridge of the Serra de Aire, Torres Novas anticline resulting from, among others, contact between the Estremenho Calcário Massif and the less permeable soils of the basin of the Tagus. This karst spring is the exsurgence of the underground hydrological network of the most extensive national karstic system. The Almonda grotto has an approximate development of 10km, with an extensive network of underground, fossil or active galleries. Due to its complexity and size, its exploration and documentation is yet to be completed. Although the spring is permanent, it is only possible to dive on dry season. It is possible to go trough 1000mts of galleries and a drop of -78mts. In the rainy season, it is impossible to penetrate the system at the source due to the strong current and flow rate. “This Post Rocks” // Well it’s been a week since I’ve posted a photo, so you know there’s been a lotta “thinking” going on in these parts... I’m warning you now, this is another one of those long posts I put you all through—hopefully the picture is pretty enough to make up for what’s being written next to it, to be posted below it... I’ve spent another day indoors, alone, looking into screens in my living room, alternating productivity with its opposite, sometimes within the same minute, chipping away at the things I do when I’m not at work—which is just a state of mind, now... I’ve largely avoided the doomscroll today, and this week I went for my first few runs in months—those months spent largely depressed, on this same couch I’m typing this from, swapping miles and the woods for ice cream, (homemade) tempura binges and YouTube rabbit holes of things I don’t do and had no prior interest in... The repairs on my wetsuit tell me there’s more Pat underwater than there used to be. I’m doing alright mind you; I’m learning to go with the ebb and flow instead of fighting for a slack tide... When I said I was alone I suppose that’s not true—a feeling of catastrophic banality that’s moved in to stay; making coffee with concentration camps growing at the border, sitting in meetings while the executive theorizes about giving up power, using the bathroom in someone else’s house and wondering if you just killed someone... America is lost and lawless, and there’s a vacancy of justice far beyond a seat on the Supreme Court. If this system required an RBG to still not see a Breonna Taylor then what exactly is its purpose... I’m voting Biden and I hope you do too—I was in France when we voted against our fascist to elect our non-fascist in a landslide. We need to view our elected leaders more as tools to accomplish policy goals and politics as a collection of principles instead of projections of parental figures and personality traits. Like this virus, an overthrow of democracy isn’t obvious—it is insidious, contagious and unrelenting. The plan is to take every small step in front of us, forever, to leave both the bad behind, and to see worst coming before it’s too close. - @underwaterpat on Instagram
