I remember this dive so well. Will keep it in my memories forever. That was that first time I ever took photos of a freediver. (Of course I was with my scuba gear). When I was there waiting for @veronikafreediver under the water I was so excited that this is finally happening. And to be honest with you when she showed me the sign she is going down I was so ready! She went down slowly, moving like a real mermaid (Freaking mermaid!!! Just in front of me!), Looked into my eyes, turned around and went back on the surface. And I cant tell you enough how beautiful freedivers look like under the water. Just them and water. Nothing else matters. You just have to be there and feel this magic. I knew I will take more photos of this amazing girl! Well, that was first shoot I had with my dear friend Veronika, then we did two more. Icebergs are a good metaphor for the sea: a large percentage of an iceberg is normally hidden from our human eye. This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen underwater. It was sort of like swimming into an underwater cathedral and I was instantly struck with inspiration. I have so many ideas for this place and some day when the pandemic is over I will hopefully have the opportunity to give them life. Once upon a time, on an ocean in the mind. In late March I pitched the frame of my camping tent in the living room, stretched a white king sheet across it to form a mini studio light box, and started taking macro photographs of different types of plastic bags scrounged from about the house. What began as a form of escapism, the desire to imagine floating free upon the sea, ended up being a highly rewarding exercise in presence, and a somewhat unintentional environmental statement. I’d expected to have something to share sooner, but such is the creative process. The three images you see here are my favorites so far. 1) White Kitchen Garbage Bag, 2) Green Grocery Bag 3) Large Black Garbage Bag. Each final is comprised of multiple images, and each of those images is a focus stack of up to 98 individual photos. The sky’s were mostly collected from my front porch. The gull, is hopefully doing well in Oregon. It’s a strange thing to be grateful for the opportunities provided by bad situations. There’s an inherent contradiction, wanting the best for everyone, and knowing that sometimes the obstacles are the way. Hope you are well. - @bejamin on Instagram

One of the first things we did when we arrived to New Zealand was buy a fish bowl to put the camera in so we could take some split under/over water shots. In 6 months we only got to use it once, toward the end, but how fitting that it was a silver fern shot! Well wrap up our NZ series with this icon of the country. I have been invited to be part of the first female cave exploration team for the Xunaan-Ha Expedition, powered by Robbie Schmittner Expeditions 🤩🤩🤩 Myself and 5 badass ladies, Maria @bollerup_gonediving , Ellen @underwaterellen , Tamara @liveforthecoconut , Julia @cavedivingtulum and Melodie @watermelodie will be heading out to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico (where some of the ladies already live) in February 2021 for a 20 day cave exploration expedition! . The expedition aims to (besides exploring never-seen-before caves): 1. Find proof that the Holbox-fracture is a waterbearing cave in itself 2. Raise awareness for the Yucatan Aquifer - one of the biggest on the planet 3. Wildlife and Environmental Preservation 4. Raise funds for the future Xunaan-Ha Expedition Series . The future of this island nation isnt that bright 🌊 ⠀⠀⠀ The Republic of Kiribati is an independent island nation consisting of some 33 atolls near the equator in the central Pacific. The islands are spread over approximately 3.5 million sq km of ocean, but with a total land area of only 800 sq km. ⠀⠀⠀ Tarawa Atoll, pictured here, lies approximately halfway between Hawaii and Australia. Tarawa consists of a large lagoon fringed by a V-shaped reef, around 35 km long, and is made up of more than 30 islets. Tarawa, the site of a brutal World War II battle, is divided into North and South Tarawa. ⠀⠀⠀ South Tarawa, is made up of a thin, string of islets joined by causeways and is home to more than half of Kiribati’s 100 000 citizens. ⠀⠀⠀ Kiribati is one of the lowest-lying nations in the world, with many of the country’s atolls and coral islands rising no higher than 2 m above sea level – making them extremely vulnerable to sea level rise. Kiribati has already seen growing damage from storms and flooding. In 1999, two of the nation’s unpopulated islets, Tebua Tarawa and Abanuea, disappeared underwater entirely. ⠀⠀⠀ Global mean sea level is likely to rise between 0.29 m and 1.1 m by the end of this century. While this may not sound like a lot, small island nations, including Kiribati, will face particularly devastating consequences. ⠀⠀⠀ Small changes in sea-level rise will not only cause flooding, erosion, soil contamination and coral degradation, but will ultimately shrink more of Kiribati’s land area – displacing many of its inhabitants. ⠀⠀⠀ It is vital that over the coming decades, the changing height of Earth’s sea surface continues to be closely monitored. Set to launch in November, the Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will accurately measure changes in global sea level. Sometimes the stars and sea align - even in the starless skies of an Antarctic summer. In the following instance, it was a case of land and marine mammals meeting in the middle of that thin interface between the liquid and oxygenated world. The location, Wilhelmina Bay, West Antarctic Peninsula. It was during an unassuming, after-dinner zodiac cruise from the platform of the National Geographic Explorer that some of our skiffs came across a group of feeding humpback whales. After about 20 minutes of impressive lunge feeding behavior the whales seemed to settle into a less focused pattern of feeding and shifted their attention towards us. What ensued was 40 minutes of the most attentive, curious, engaging behavior I’ve ever experienced from a marine mammal while on the ocean. During this period two individuals circled, swam under, spy-hopped next to and nearly (but never actually) rubbed their 40 foot bodies along every inch of our 22 ft. rubber boats. The worlds oceans feed more than 3.5 billion people. And in 20 years that figure may double. The sea therefore has the potential to feed humanity but we must urgently change the way we use it. Around 6,000 years ago men realized that they had no future simply by hunting or gathering. Thus was born at that time agriculture and livestock. However in the Sea we are still collectors. We have been taking out for centuries without putting anything inside. That is why about 90% of fish stocks are overexploited or depleted according to FAO. On land however: we plow, fertilize, sow, water and wait. In the Sea to collect we do not need to do all that, it is enough to leave areas for marine life to reproduce. If we want to continue fishing we have to protect. Marine protected areas without fishing generate a spectacular benefit to fishermen. It seems urgent to me that we change our mentality to the way we use marine resources. #mediterranean 🇪🇸 Los océanos del mundo alimentan A más de 3.5 billones de personas. En tierra sin embargo: aramos, abonamos, sembramos, regamos y esperamos. En el Mar para recolectar no necesitamos hacer todo eso, basta con dejar zonas para que la vida marina se reproduzca. Si queremos seguir pescando tenemos que proteger. Las zonas marinas protegidas sin pesca generan un espectacular beneficio a los pescadores. “This Post Rocks” // Well it’s been a week since I’ve posted a photo, so you know there’s been a lotta “thinking” going on in these parts... I’m warning you now, this is another one of those long posts I put you all through—hopefully the picture is pretty enough to make up for what’s being written next to it, to be posted below it... I’ve spent another day indoors, alone, looking into screens in my living room, alternating productivity with its opposite, sometimes within the same minute, chipping away at the things I do when I’m not at work—which is just a state of mind, now... I’ve largely avoided the doomscroll today, and this week I went for my first few runs in months—those months spent largely depressed, on this same couch I’m typing this from, swapping miles and the woods for ice cream, (homemade) tempura binges and YouTube rabbit holes of things I don’t do and had no prior interest in... The repairs on my wetsuit tell me there’s more Pat underwater than there used to be. I’m doing alright mind you; I’m learning to go with the ebb and flow instead of fighting for a slack tide... When I said I was alone I suppose that’s not true—a feeling of catastrophic banality that’s moved in to stay; making coffee with concentration camps growing at the border, sitting in meetings while the executive theorizes about giving up power, using the bathroom in someone else’s house and wondering if you just killed someone... America is lost and lawless, and there’s a vacancy of justice far beyond a seat on the Supreme Court. If this system required an RBG to still not see a Breonna Taylor then what exactly is its purpose... I’m voting Biden and I hope you do too—I was in France when we voted against our fascist to elect our non-fascist in a landslide. We need to view our elected leaders more as tools to accomplish policy goals and politics as a collection of principles instead of projections of parental figures and personality traits. Like this virus, an overthrow of democracy isn’t obvious—it is insidious, contagious and unrelenting.
