Every year, humpback populations migrate from cooler feeding grounds to warmer breeding grounds. The warm, tropical climate is perfect for mating and giving birth. Each humpback whale population has its own migration route, and those who travel from Antarctica to northern South America have the longest migration of any mammal alive! I have been invited to be part of the first female cave exploration team for the Xunaan-Ha Expedition, powered by Robbie Schmittner Expeditions 🤩🤩🤩 Myself and 5 badass ladies, Maria @bollerup_gonediving , Ellen @underwaterellen , Tamara @liveforthecoconut , Julia @cavedivingtulum and Melodie @watermelodie will be heading out to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico (where some of the ladies already live) in February 2021 for a 20 day cave exploration expedition! . The expedition aims to (besides exploring never-seen-before caves): 1. Find proof that the Holbox-fracture is a waterbearing cave in itself 2. Raise awareness for the Yucatan Aquifer - one of the biggest on the planet 3. Wildlife and Environmental Preservation 4. Raise funds for the future Xunaan-Ha Expedition Series . Bull kelp grows and thrives in rough and tumble coastal waters. Its anchored to the bottom by its rootlike holdfast, which has many fingerlike projections that hold the plant tight to rocks. From the holdfast, a flexible stem called a stipe extends to the surface gradually enlarging to form a single, round float. Mataking Island Fun Fact: The Mataking Shipwreck Post located on our island was the first ever officially recognised underwater post box by (@pos4you) Pos Malaysia in the whole of Malaysia. Recreational Divers allowed to go 30meters or 98ft underwater are welcomed to purchase a fun post card worth only RM3 which would be sealed in a waterproof casing, and sent to whoever they want to nationally or internationally through our underwater mailing system. The mailbox is attached to an artificial Shipwreck reef filled with so much surprises on every inch of the boats body the only caution you have to watch out for are the lionfishes. When I was starting out as a photographer I read as many books and spoke to ask many people as I could. The first things I learned were the rules. Rule of thirds. The Sunny 16 Rule (this deserves a post of its own!). Never shoot against the light. Watch the shadows. Rules are a great starting point but eventually we all learn how to bend them, and this is where we really start to learn photography. Each one of us will bend these rules in our own ways, and this is what we ultimately call a photographic style. So shadows are your friends. Backlight can be magical. Putting your subject in the center of the frame is not a bad thing. These are the kinds of discussions we like having at the GRID office, bending rules every so slightly every time we shoot a new story. This is the guiding idea behind the Open Call, to have open discussions with fellow photographers so that we can all see that the rules are meant to be broken. Remember, shadows are your friends. Just had 2 spots open up for next weekends Level 1 course on Oahu 8/1-2. As the temperatures are finally warming up a lot more lately this is the perfect time to get in on a course and learn how to freedive. The water has been a comfy 80-82F which makes for longer and more comfortable dives. I’ve noticed a huge increase lately in more students maxing out the course with static’s of 3-4+ minutes and multiple dives to the bottom of the line at 20m/66ft. And many of these students are coming in with previous bests of 20-30 second breath holds and 5-10m/16-30ft max dives. MOTIVATION MONDAY: recognition of California’s magical underwear places, Marine Life Protection Act. In 1999, the California legislature identified the need to re-examine and re-design California’s marine protected area system to increase its coherence and it’s effectiveness of protecting the states marine life, habitats, and ecosystems. «Plastic and whales» Water plays a big role in this project (water in the park and a view of the river). In this picture I wanted to hyperbolize this connection. I wanted to show turbid water (which still does not lose its beauty) as a continuation of the previously mentioned pollution topic. Although it sounds scary to be pulled toward the bottom of the ocean it really is a magical feeling. You are able to completely relax your body which conserves oxygen, and makes a long dive feel peaceful and relaxing. Once you reach the bottom, there is even more fun to be had. Your feet will settle into the sand, your hands will fall to your side, and you are able to “walk” along. I imagine that walking on the bottom of the ocean is a similar feeling to walking on the moon. “This Post Rocks” // Well it’s been a week since I’ve posted a photo, so you know there’s been a lotta “thinking” going on in these parts... I’m warning you now, this is another one of those long posts I put you all through—hopefully the picture is pretty enough to make up for what’s being written next to it, to be posted below it... I’ve spent another day indoors, alone, looking into screens in my living room, alternating productivity with its opposite, sometimes within the same minute, chipping away at the things I do when I’m not at work—which is just a state of mind, now... I’ve largely avoided the doomscroll today, and this week I went for my first few runs in months—those months spent largely depressed, on this same couch I’m typing this from, swapping miles and the woods for ice cream, (homemade) tempura binges and YouTube rabbit holes of things I don’t do and had no prior interest in... The repairs on my wetsuit tell me there’s more Pat underwater than there used to be. I’m doing alright mind you; I’m learning to go with the ebb and flow instead of fighting for a slack tide... When I said I was alone I suppose that’s not true—a feeling of catastrophic banality that’s moved in to stay; making coffee with concentration camps growing at the border, sitting in meetings while the executive theorizes about giving up power, using the bathroom in someone else’s house and wondering if you just killed someone... America is lost and lawless, and there’s a vacancy of justice far beyond a seat on the Supreme Court. If this system required an RBG to still not see a Breonna Taylor then what exactly is its purpose... I’m voting Biden and I hope you do too—I was in France when we voted against our fascist to elect our non-fascist in a landslide. We need to view our elected leaders more as tools to accomplish policy goals and politics as a collection of principles instead of projections of parental figures and personality traits. Like this virus, an overthrow of democracy isn’t obvious—it is insidious, contagious and unrelenting. French marine biologist Louis Marie Auguste Boutan poses for the camera in what is one of the first ever underwater photographic portraits; 1899. Despite this incredible feat the first underwater photograph known was actually taken by an Englishman by the name of William Thompson in Dorset in 1856. Thompson didnt actually dive to take his photograph. Instead, he lowered his housed plate camera to the seabed in Weymouth Bay and operated the shutter from a boat anchored over the site. For Louis, with his engineer brother Auguste they developed several types of underwater cameras and equipment. The camera was a rectangular metallic box fitted with specialised lenses and plates fixed to a tripod. External controls were used to adjust the shutter, and a rubber balloon was manipulated to adjust buoyancy as needed. In using his camera he found the images were cloudy. To remedy this, he added blue-colored glasses to the interior of the waterproof camera box to act as filters for greater clarity. - @lookthroughhistory on Instagram

Spot - Almonda Location - Alcanena The spring of the Almonda river (or Olho do Moinho da Fonte) is located on the southeastern ridge of the Serra de Aire, Torres Novas anticline resulting from, among others, contact between the Estremenho Calcário Massif and the less permeable soils of the basin of the Tagus. This karst spring is the exsurgence of the underground hydrological network of the most extensive national karstic system. The Almonda grotto has an approximate development of 10km, with an extensive network of underground, fossil or active galleries. Due to its complexity and size, its exploration and documentation is yet to be completed. Although the spring is permanent, it is only possible to dive on dry season. It is possible to go trough 1000mts of galleries and a drop of -78mts. In the rainy season, it is impossible to penetrate the system at the source due to the strong current and flow rate.
