KAWASE HASUI (1883-1957) Hasui has become one of the most famous and sought after print designers of the shin hanga (new prints) movement. Born into a family of cord makers, the young Hasui aspired to be an artist. His father objected, but when the family business failed in 1908 Hasui was free to pursue his dream. Initially Hasui worked as a painter and illustrator. This changed when he saw Itō Shinsui’s woodblock series ‘Eight views of Ōmi’. Inspired by these landscapes, Hasui voiced the desire to enter the world of shin-hanga: ‘If possible, I too would like to be able to do [these]’. The renowned publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō published his first prints: this marked the start of a loyal collaboration that would last a lifetime. Tragically, the Kanto Earthquake in 1923 turned Shōzaburō’s workshop into ruins, and with that a large body of Hasui’s work. His pre-earthquake works are therefore rare and in high demand. Hasui’s landscapes are characterized by their serene atmosphere. Both modern in style and traditional in subject, Hasui quickly became popular overseas. His prints continue to visualize a nostalgic longing for Japan’s past. Prints: Mishima river in Mutsu (rare pre-earthquake design), Spring night at Inokashira park, Okitsu-chō, Suruga. Today Sept 18 is 1 year since Smokehouse 93 has been open and serving Slow Smoked BBQ in the quaint town of Invermere, British Columbia 🏔🇨🇦 . . To say this year has been crazy, would sound like a broken record with everything that’s been happening in 2020 . . Needless to say its been a journey that’s only just started. With the support of the Columbia Valley and the many tourists that venture to see our spectacular landscape, Smokehouse 93 will be growing into the future. . . We always get asked what type of wood we use or what type of smokers we are using. Since day one we’ve been using 2 Timberline 1300’s D2 with wifire from @traegergrills They’re pumping out anywhere from 75lbs to 300lbs of meat per day. These bad boys have run daily, maybe getting a couple hrs rest while they get cleaned for the next days brisket, butt, etc. They smoke with consistent flavour and have kept our business running during -35 to +35 weather. If you’re an avid backyard smoker and you have any questions on your Traeger feel free to DM. I’m pretty sure I could troubleshoot anything on these Traeger’s. . . We’re going to be shutting down the Smokehouse from Sept 21-Oct1. Re-opening Oct 2 with our new kitchen fully operating, a second bathroom to our dining room and right behind that should be our liquor license. . . For those that dont know, FBi is a Sydney community radio station. It happens to be the station Ive listened to most of my life. I first walked in with some Garageband demos when I was 13. Later, when I was 18, I came into the studio and first touched CDJs (after confirming I knew I could do a guest mix on Sunset) and DJd for the first time ever (live to air). 10 years later and over that time I have been lucky to walk through those doors many times for interviews and mixes on so many quality programs. All this time album of the week has been a soundbite that has echoed and endured though my brain as Ive been put onto great - mainly local - music and honestly its an accolade that comes with so much gravity for me from a community organisation I respect and admire. Some publications are more meaningful than others. Our project “Lift-Off, A Skycraper for Tourism” was published in scienceetviejunior in France. I know how important and influential it can be to make the new generation meet provocative and creative ideas. I grew up with reading similar magazines myself and they were a massive influence on me. It is truly exciting to think that this project can inspire young minds to think about big ideas for a sustainable future. The first 12 of 28 epic landscape photos taken on 3 helicopter charter flights with @thehelicopterline in Queenstown NZ. They have been helpful above and beyond my expectations. Thanks Brad and Scotty for welcoming Karen and I into the Helicopter Line family. Most of these photos were taken from the Helicopter and made possible by the piloting of Scotty. Without his help and experience these photos would not exist. All photos were shot with a Canon 5D MKIV on the first flight and a Canon R5 on last 2 flights.
