tl;dr: Excuse me while I work this out: I’ve felt the sting of racism my entire life. From fellow students making fun of items in my lunch box (one never knew cucumber rolls to be so offensive) to strangers touching my hair or stroking my skin. (“Asians have no body hair!”) Gong songs, ching chong, something involving swiss cheese. Chinavirus. I’m damned if I wear a mask and I’m damned if I don’t. Some of this is violating and irritating, sure, but my worst stories are unequivocally nothing compared to what I’ve witnessed done to my black friends and colleagues. Story time: 1) A boy I knew growing up dated my friend. Some other people I was close to found it amusing to call him “microphone head”. I didn’t say anything. When they bullied him on the bus, I said nothing. I was friends with him in secret, but silent when he was being bullied. 2) I was instructed not to date a black person. “It would be better if you were a lesbian.” I confronted that person later on in life, and was told it had nothing to do with black people, but rather everything to do with my “safety” as a minority. Unravel that piece of advice for a moment. 3) I was once told that black people smell because their hair products contain urine, it’s the only thing that helps with their curly hair. Should I keep going? Do these vignettes make you uncomfortable, sick, angry? I should hope so. I don’t want to spread more hate but I feel it’s important to acknowledge how deep-seeded these roots run. Look at how all of our tiny stories threaded together and became a horrific web of racism, injustice, and devastating violence. I digress. I’m not here to debate or tell others how to behave, just share what I’m doing: I am fact checking before I post. I feel that blind sharing leading to the spread of misinformation is dangerous. I am researching and educating myself: watching videos and reading articles for both sides to better understand and have stronger arguments about what’s fundamentally broken here. If I feel someone needs to do or say more, I am going to try and help them understand. In turn, please do the same for me. Check me, share with me, help me do better. 01st October 2020 - Black His/Herstory Month. Just a reminder: Black History is a part of World History; it is important 365 days a year because the inventions, work and contributions of Black people have been and continue to be used, everyday of the year 😉. From the comb you used to brush your hair this morning, to the ironing board, to the automatic gear shift, traffic light, light filament, shoe lasting machine, the Home Security System, the wireless technology in the remote control, our ability to transfuse blood (Blood banks), the Mailbox, the Gas Mask,,CORNROWS/braids in our hair, Potato Chips, the use of certain herbs and spices to season food, certain dances and rhythms, not to even start on the Scientific and Mathematical breakthroughs and more... our contributions remain. ✊🏽✊✊🏿• If you know me, you know I don’t normally turn to social media to broadcast my thoughts or opinions but I wanted to take a moment to speak up & I’ll keep it short. I don’t understand in a time when racial tensions are so high, how POC could stand so divided. This is a time for us to stand up for one another, to lift each other up. As an Asian-American I’ve dealt with racism & people reacting to me solely based on how I look. Being called chink, yelling ni-hao, pulling their eyes back, making faces at me. I’ve encountered racist attacks long before coronavirus & in a time of isolation I wish I could feel confident enough in the strangers around me to stick up for me if I needed it. What affects one minority group affects all minority groups. It’s not black vs white or yellow vs black –– it’s racists vs everyone else. - @alyoh on Instagram

- More divided or more aware of our division?

- Pictures for home

Staying silent or “being neutral” are no longer options in anti-racism efforts. Confronting white supremacy, especially in our own families and communities, is incredibly difficult and challenging. However, refusing to do so and resorting to indifference actively supports injustice. RP @becauseofthem ・・・ Talk about historical!⠀ ⠀ Madinah Wilson-Anton (@madinahforde) became the first Muslim woman to be elected to office in Delaware in the state’s 233-year history, the Newark Post reports.⠀ ⠀ Wilson-Anton is a 27-year-old Democrat who ran against 70-year-old incumbent John Viola for the 26th District seat - a seat Viola had occupied since 1998. A native of the district, Wilson-Anton grew up in Newark, utilizing her lived experience to run a campaign rooted in real change for the community. She currently works as a policy analyst at the University of Delaware’s Biden Institute, getting her start in politics as a legislative aid for Viola, something she called “an eye-opening experience.” ⠀ ⠀ During her campaign, Wilson-Anton focused on the issues she felt mattered most to her constituents. She advocated for an improved education system, reforming the education funding model in Delaware, stable housing for renters, and economic justice reform. ⠀ ⠀ “Our legislators are so used to how things are that they lost the imagination for what’s possible. It’s the people that are within the system now that’s not going to fix it, so we need to elect people who will, Wilson-Anton told the Newark Post earlier in her campaign. A lot of things seem controversial in the legislative hall, but it’s not controversial at all when you talk to people in the community...Frustration really inspired me to run, because I’m tired of complaining, and I want to make a difference.” ⠀ ⠀ Visit #becauseofthemwecan 🔗 for the full story!⠀ - @delawareblackcom on Instagram

@marclamonthill you said this on my birthday #five years ago. Let’s all think about that for a moment. The fact that we, The American People, are still having the exact same conversation shows how much racism and white supremacy are embedded into our countries DNA. Enough is Enough. How long must these inhumane altercations continue? How long do Black people need to wait for justice? No justice, no peace means exactly what it says. Looks like America is going to have to learn the hard way. But she will learn the following truths: 1) Black Lives Matter. 2) We need police reform now. 3) Mental Health is not a crime nor is it a death sentence. 4) Swimming is not a all white sport. If you don’t have time to represent the truth on your social media, we will make time to hold you accountable. @usaswimming We are talking to YOU. Today is not a day for selfies and blogs. Today is a very sad day. The disheartening experience of George Floyd has not only raised but confirmed many talking points and perspectives in our justice system today. Not only are we reading about it, but we are also talking about it - we SHOULD be talking about it. The injustice that black people are and have been facing in todays society springs a new anger inside of all of us and it raises the question around the many many black people that have been failed by the justice system that we don’t know about. Videos, photos and vlogs are exposing the cruelty that the police force are wrongfully doing to our people - our black people. So on this sad day of many for black people and the world, I just wanna encourage the silent to speak up, the comfortable to donate, the healthy to strike and everyone to say their names. The Stonewall uprising, which Pride commemorates every year in June, was a protest against police brutality. Integral to this monumental event was transgender activist Marsha P. We are outraged by the continued murder and oppression of Black people and the inhumane police brutality perpetuated by a culture of violent white supremacy. We’ve been quiet as we take a hard look inward to identify racism and inequality within our own house. We commit to making the systemic, long-term changes that we know are critical. We have work to do, and we hold ourselves accountable for making a meaningful impact in the fight to dismantle racism, police brutality, and white supremacy. This means setting clear goals, rethinking internal practices, and being even more intentional in our continued support of local communities. - Short success quotes

Wrote about media framing, the role and responsibilities of white photographers and editors, and the importance of Black people telling their own stories, again. This essay is a rare offering in that it is meant for all white and non-Black lens based artists and publications. Now is the time to reconfigure yourselves or you WILL get reconfigured. Now is certainly not the time to start throwing work at Black artists that’s not thoughtful or beneficial. Now is not the time to release idiotic statements about your consistent reliance on racism, that offers up temporary promises of doing better (thinking specifically of that foolishness of a letter from one Ms. Wintour.) Now is the time to sit quietly and listen. Stew in your discomfort, in your guilt. Share it with YOUR community of non-Black people. Now is the time to educate yourself in ways you’ve intentionally neglected to gain and misuse your power. *in my very best Ron Isley Voice, “Don’t Make Me Saaaaaay, it again GIRRRLLL!!” Grateful to @insider for offering this essay a home! Please read, share, and enjoy! Link in my bio. (P.S. the site is ad city. Might I suggest reader view?) - @gioncarlovalentine on Instagram
