Yesterday after distro we sang happy birthday for our friend Dee. 2nd slide from our first pandemic distro in march receiving a monetary donation from @brigada71 out in the pouring rain. We had to switch things up from cooking meals 1 day a week to doing a socially distanced pantry out of the back of a van. Fast forward six months were distributing food, hygiene products, and PPE to hundreds of people twice a week. Amidst a pandemic, in a community bearing the violence of gentrification, the police state, and other unnamable cruelties inflicted by the capitalist system we kept going, remembering how all of us make this a vibrant place to live and trusting in eachothers potential. Everyday we survive, thrive and make this the beautiful home that it is. A better world is already here when we remember and celebrate each other and the potential we all have. 🇲🇽 Three months ago, @sonia.erika.likes.weed asked Alex to go to Mexico with her. It was the first time she could go back after being undocumented for 21 years. He didn’t hesitate. • While we’ve been gone we’ve watched the situation back home slowly deteriorate first because of coronavirus, and now because of the unrest following the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. Of course, none of this is new- we’re just seeing frustration and anger over injustices and inequalities that have existed all of our lives. • And here in Mexico, we see the same. We see racism, colonialism, extraction from human beings and the environment. We see government corruption, theft and working people left to fight for crumbs. We see anti-Blackness in our own brown communities. We see upscale neighborhoods filled with wealthy white people and foreigners living very different lives than people just a few miles away. We’re in Mexico but it still feels a lot like New York. • Sonia also talked us into taking advantage of the chance to record new music during a pandemic. After a lot of hard work and a little bit of rehearsal, we’re now about to commence work on 9 songs over the course of 10 days, with musicians from #nyc and #cdmx. Huge thank you to @ranarex, @rive_quiroz, @sinuhe.art, @cubettarecords and UGA UGA Studios for making this happen. Our NYC and Mexican fam put us all together on one path. • We don’t know where this will end up, but we hope we’re planting a seed. А на сцене мы ждали, пока переставят и переключат все оборудование, повлиять на этот процесс мы, к сожалению, никак не могли. Из-за задержек мы начали позже и немного сократили наш сет, что обидно. This weekend I played a beautifully distanced house show. We set up in the front yard, a limited number of folks brought their camp chairs to pre-sectioned spaces, masks were worn when distance couldn’t be kept. Last year we got together with @mrpsimmonds for a week long writing retreat. One outcome of this is our song “who am i”. The question “Who am I?” is a big one. From the time it was written to now, the “answer” has changed. We have changed. We hope to continue to learn, use our voices and fight for what is right. We will continue to ask the question”who am I?” as a way to hold ourselves accountable and encourage you to do the same.
