- @insomnia_teatro_condell on Instagram

Legacy. Because of them I’m here. This is my Aunt Mildred putting my Nana’s wedding veil on. Look at that sisterhood. Oh my heart. Legacy is not only what we leave but acknowledging what is left for us. I tell our students weekly that I can put together an incredible curriculum and the most amazing teachers for them, but what will you do with it? This is what I’ve been asking myself since Aunt Mildred’s transition. What will I now do with what I’ve been given. You may be thinking to yourself, but Robert I haven’t been given much. If you’re reading this you’ve already got two things many people didn’t wake up with - eyesight and breath. Even now in the midst of this uncertainty you have more than you realize if you will only give yourself permission to be grateful for it. Could I encourage you to take 30 seconds to close your eyes and focus on your breath and this incredible body thats been holding you up through the past 6 months? Was last week hurtful and tearful? My goodness yes. But more than anything it reminded me who I am, what I’ve been given, and why I’m here. I can’t stop. I won’t stop. They’ve left me too much. Continue the legacy laid before you friend. More than ever we need your story. More than ever we need your vision. And more than ever we need you to breathe life into what I believe are still our best days ahead of us. It absolutely won’t be easy, but I’m making a commitment to doing it and am hoping you will do the same. Will you join me? - @sirroberttakespics on Instagram

Join us TOMORROW from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M on Zoom for MOCA Teahouse Reading Club. Registration link in bio. Our next conversation will address the following questions: Who is Asian American? How did the formation of the term “Asian American” come about? How does this term bring about contradictions of Asian American identity and ethnic differences, including Southeast and South Asian invisibility? Through this discussion, we hope to nurture a more nuanced dialogue around the issues we are facing in our current times and explore strategies to build a more equitable future. This image is from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s article in Time Magazine, “Asian Americans Are Still Caught in the Trap of the ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype. And It Creates Inequality for All.” This article is one of the readings that will be discussed, along with articles by Kat Chow, Kevin Nadal, Dedrick Asante-Muhammad and Sally Sim, and an interview with Ocean Vuong. Seattle’s Chinatown/International District has a complex history, stemming from decades of immigration and the hand-in-hand racism that came along with it. Since the conception of this district, there has always been some portion of the population that has suffered through the discrimination of others—namely white Americans. Starting in 1886, the Seattle Anti-Chinese Riot, during which “two weeks in white Seattleites rounded up the city’s Chinese residents, forced them onto ships and boxcars and shipped them north and south. By the end of it, a community of hundreds had been reduced to a few dozen” (Pulkkinen). For this reason, the Chinatown over here is less established than similar communities, such as Portland. Of course, the Chinese population has not been the only population discriminated against. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the vast majority of Chinatown’s Japanese population were forcibly removed to the internment camps. During their absence, “Chinese and Filipino workers and shops filled the need for services while the Japanese were gone for three years,” which kept this area alive (Densho). However, the numerous Japanese businesses and residences dwindled, and many people were not able to return to their homes or jobs once released; many employers and neighbors were openly hostile and did not want to be associated with Japanese-Americans. Unfortunately, while modern times have reduced the number of racist sentiments, longtime residents of the International District still face discrimination. This time, it is due to financial reasons—Seattle’s booming housing market and development have led to forced evictions as developers buy up older parts of the area. This gentrification has caused grief among citizens like Tai Fung Chin, who was “forced out of her apartment in Seattles International District back in 2015. But she didnt want to leave the neighborhood…’Because of the language barrier, this is like China — everybody speaks the same language so, they dont have any choice’ (KUOW). These actions don’t only hurt the current residents of this neighborhood, but also trample over the historic significance of the area. For example, Chinatown - @internationaldistrict206 on Instagram

Are you a family member of an #Australiansoldier of Chinese Ancestry? Do you have personal memories, photographs and memorabilia of a #ChineseAustralians WWII service to Australia? If so, please help us with our research by providing your information through the link below. 2020 marks the 75th year since the end of the #SecondWorldWar. With support from the Victorian Government, we are undertaking research into the loyal participation of #ChineseAustralian women and men in this war to produce a freshly researched book. As the National Archives Service Records are not yet fully digitised, we may not be able to obtain as much detailed history of these women and men, from official records, as we have with the #ChineseANZACS. Succeeding generations of these women and men may have personal memories, photographs and memorabilia of their service to Australia. We are appealing for such to be offered to the Museum to contribute to this book. These contributions will be duly acknowledged. #chineseaustralians #chinesemuseum #museumcollection #museumreseach https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSco-ZPMb4cNEXt6MDhfKvOzpRvK3Q44gE0T4o_R9LX0IFAkmQ/viewform - @chinesemuse on Instagram
