Vanishing Point by Billy Collins You thought it was just a pencil dot art students made in the middle of the canvas before they started painting the barn, cows, haystacks, or just a point where railroad tracks fuse, a spot engineers stare at from the cabs of trains as they clack through the heat of prairies heading out of the dimensional. I watch the history of architecture narrow down to nothing, all straight lines rushing away from themselves like men who have caught on fire. Every monument since Phidias converges on this speck. Imagine a period that could swallow all the sentences in an encyclopedia. I have reached the heaven of geometry where every line in every theorem aspires to go. Even the vanishing points in drawings vanish here. And if you do not believe me, look at where the tangents of your garage are aimed. You have heard of the apple that astonished Paris? In a normal year I am blessed with the opportunity to travel. It’s in exploring the farthest reaches of our world, and encountering people and ideas wildly different from those I was raised in the United States from which I draw inspiration, learn and grow. This year because of COVID travel restrictions and reduced income that has not been possible. I was grateful this weekend to be able to get out with my old buddy and riding partner Apollo (the bike), and take in the beauty of our own Colorado backyard. Last time Betsy and I passed the Mt. Elbert TH on a bikepacking trip, we ditched our bags, rode up the peak, high fived at 14,439’, and enjoyed one of the best descents in Colorado, then carried on. This year, we pedaled right past the TH to Elbert to complete the Colorado Trail. Connecting all of the dots between favorite rides and through spaces I hadn’t yet explored was for sure a highlight of riding the Colorado Trail in its entirety. This was in 2018 when @jamie_lee_speedflyer and I were forced to get the gum boots on due to snow. Oliver had turned up from France just in time for the first snow storm. Out of ten days we had one day of flying and filming and with the help of @wanakahelicopters we managed to capture all we needed to create the speedfly segment in MAGNETIC. When I registered for the Telluride 100, I knew I was signing up for a personal challenge unlike anything I’ve attempted before. Due to the last minute decision to go for it-I was under-prepared from a training standpoint but also blissfully unaware of the worsening weather forecast. I’ve never spent so much time in the rain! Throughout the race, I told myself that if my equipment could function so could I. And so, bike and rider made it to the finish. I was the first of two women who finished that day. Grateful for the company of fellow xc racer @alexisskarda for the first lap and proud that the two of us preservered! I’d like to think that the grit that ruined our chamois and rendered us nearly blind for a day, will be permanently engrained in our character making us tougher XC racers going forward! In late July 2002, a young couple set out on a road trip that would set the tone for the vows they had just taken. Last week @nelstana and I celebrated our 18th anniversary and once again hit the road to celebrate. COVID restrictions didn’t allow us to do the same trip we had done so many years ago but we had an awesome adventure. . First we climbed the Middle Teton, something Tanae and I had an exciting time attempting when we were much younger. This time we were joined by her dad which made the successful climb extra special. . We dropped off her dad and headed north, spent some time paddle boarding and visiting dear friends and family in Montana. They almost convinced us to stay! . The last leg of our trip was to climb Mount Borah, the highest peak in Idaho. It was so special for me to share time in mountains that I love so dearly with the woman I love more. . In the last several weeks Tanae has run 52 miles, backpacked in the winds, climbed the Middle, Borah, and run a 50k (in addition to keeping our three kids happy and healthy and wrangling my silliness as well). We may both be feeling the pressure of a 40th birthday coming up real soon and she has been setting the pace. . 35 weeks ago, I started @subparparks, and yesterday, I posted park 62 - the last in my originally planned series! I didnt think Id be emotional about this beyond just being excited, but I was on the verge of tears all day. Not because its over (Im going to continue with other park units), but because seeing this complete image with all of the pieces of this series made me realize that wow, I DID IT. Im so proud of myself, which is not something I let myself feel very often. I showed up, every single week, for 35 weeks. Over 500 hours spent illustrating this series (not including the decade spent learning and practicing before this project even started). Countless more hours spent talking to press, prepping files and managing inventory, filling orders, and engaging with so many different people who love the outdoors just as much as (if not more than) I do. The last 8 months have been a complete whirlwind and my life looks very different than it did when I started, and I owe most of that to this project (shout out to rona for the other differences 🙄). Its amazing what can happen with a lot of hard work and consistency, and a little bit of luck. (Ok, a lot of luck, but I have a really hard time giving myself credit for the hard work part). This project has helped me see that I not only CAN do hard things, I DO them. If you told me a year ago what Id be doing right now, Id have laughed at you - no way could I handle that. But time and time again I realize that Im capable of so much more than I initially think I am. Im going to go celebrate myself now. Normally Id add some kind of self deprecating comment because my inner critic starts yelling whenever I talk myself up, but not today. After a week of virtual school (kids) and six interviews for the #forthelovepodcast (🙋🏼♀️), we rented bikes and went ham all afternoon yesterday. . At one point, the kids were all ahead of me (as I was batting cleanup in case anyone went yardsale) through a canopy of aspens just starting to turn yellow, all chattering and whooping and laughing, and I discovered that I was both grinning from ear to ear and bawling. These things can happen at the exact same time apparently. . We can be deliriously happy and unthinkably sad at the same time. We can be full of gratitude and full of sorrow. We can be carefree as a kindergartner and as burdened as we ever imagined. We can love God and be so mad at him. We can adore every single thing we are looking at while suffering over every single thing we are remembering. We can hold tight to impossible mercies and rage over impossible losses. . This is life! Apparently this is life. We get it all. We don’t get the good without the hard. We don’t get the love without the risk. We don’t only get the wins. We don’t only get the losses. We get it all. Our only choice is to hold our hands open to everything. It all gets to come in. It all has to be felt and lived and experienced. This makes up a human life. It also makes for good humans, the real ones, the ones who refuse to live an edited life, only the good half, because the other half is just as real and just as valuable. What a terrible system, but here we are. . Anyhow, don’t get too precious about these pics. I also broke up twelve fights, forced the posse off a steep trail against their will where Remy was just going to “walk her bike up a mile and a half instead of ride,” and brokered a complicated peace treaty over a hostile standoff about water and backpacks. . Вы немного погуляете по камням с велосипедом на плечах, набрав метров 600 вверх, а потом... Это очень, на первый взгляд, странный спорт - велосипед стоит тысяч триста, экипировка ещё черти-сколько, летать с ним дорого, а сам вверх он не едет) Хорошо хоть, - есть подъемники и машина с прицепом... Но попотеть все равно приходится. Самые интересные места обычно недоступны ни для машин ни для подъемника. Но такого чувства, которое даёт горный велосипед во время спуска по классному трейлу, не даст, лично мне, больше ничто. Это очень сильное и уникальное ощущение, и именно в такие минуты я бываю по-настоящему счастлив. И, когда в мае никуда не удалось поехать с моим великолепным свежесобранным #knollywarden , я расстроился безмерно... Зато в июле, когда карантинный ошейник немного ослабил хватку, я сгонял в #rosalpy2020 Не все получилось - Wayra оказалась недоступна из-за карантинного режима, перспективы Байк-парка Архыз и вовсе теперь туманны. Но Кисловодск, Даховская, трейл Теберда - Архыз, Веселый Спуск и байк-парк Красная Поляна великолепны, как и высокогорное плато Лаго-Наки, где водятся медведи 🐻, способные оставить вас без завтрака, и четыре вида гадюк). Я раньше думал, что гадюка🐍 - она и есть гадюка, а там, оказывается, есть разнообразие и выбор))). Невозможно сравнивать программы @freerida.ru с программами какого-то другого оператора. Это уникальные места, уникальное разнообразие локаций, уникальные люди, и, оттого - уникальные эмоции. Никто больше не предложит вам съехать с перевала Балкбаши на высоте 3700. Никто больше не скажет: «машина забросит нас на Мухинский перевал, и уедет. Варианта не приехать в Архыз, слиться с маршрута - нет». Это называется «приключения», и я что-то крепко подсел на эту тему)) Спасибо, друзья! С 2013 года я говорю вам, - до встречи!, - и неизменно возвращаюсь. И этот раз не станет исключением. Wonderful day in the mountains with Jason and Tayler from Tulsa, OK. They are Road tripping and climbing around the country. I’m always wavering on my relationship with instagram. Some days I think it’s a waste of time and other days it’s a place for inspiration. Whichever you believe is right. So I’m trying to figure out how to make this platform something beneficial and not just a space to say “look at me”. We all get to experience so much and social media provides a place to share and connect over ideas, passions, and dreams. For me, it’s those around me that fuel me and fill me up even when my cup seems full or empty. At times I can’t help but feel motivated to share my own stories and ventures, in hope that it will pass on the fire to someone else. These past few weeks I have had the opportunity to connect with old and new friends all craving and burning with a desire to do more good in the world. It brings much light to my life and inspires me to do more and keep going. And in the end, I’m not sure it always matters what happened on the journey but instead what you do with what you experienced. I did a thing this season and didn’t share it because up until this moment it didn’t feel right to. Sometimes I have a hard time sharing my successes - or what I deem a success in my own mind. Saying “I am proud of myself” is not something that rolls easily off my tongue. And even saying it now makes me feel uncomfortable. Instead I find myself saying things like “I want desperately to improve” or “maybe one day I will love the photos I take.” But this year I got a message through this account that had me dancing in my living room, phoning my family and best friend and screaming on the phone in pure joy. My photo was chosen by @seerevelstoke to be featured on their massive billboard. A billboard seen by thousands, sitting right there on the Trans Canada Highway beckoning passerbyers to experience Revelstoke in the winter. This big news - literally BIG - felt like validation that I arrived somewhere as a photographer. That the years I have spent in the backcountry snapping photos has been worth it. That the time invested in my passion has “paid off”. Maybe this achievement felt so special because having my photo on a billboard is a life long goal of mine. Maybe it’s the fact that the tourism company in my hometown wanted to use my photo to convey a message - the very same message I try to convey on this account through photos and words every day: the message Revelstoke is amazing and you should experience it firsthand yourself. Maybe it’s just cool to see something you captured, a perfect moment with a great friend, in larger than life size. All that being said, even though I felt like I arrived at a “somewhere” I still haven’t landed in the place I ultimately want to be. And instead of feeling like I achieved something so I could let off the throttle it actually punched it to send me full speed. The drive to create, to be better, to push was fuelled. I have so much to learn about action photography. Really, this is only the beginning of my journey as a photographer. But, I am going to take these little (big) moments along the way and savour them all while pushing to arrive at the next somewhere. Chasing snow storms with friends and living in a van was a dream come true. First, I need to shoutout @adventure_lodge for giving me the opportunity to live out my vision and check another adventure off my bucket list. I am extremely grateful. Now let’s go over all the perks with renting out one of these vans. The van I rented out from @adventurelodge had a complete set up to comfortably live in the van while going on my powder chase. It had a queen size bed set up with underneath storage for mine and my friend’s ski/snowboard gear. Tons of storage! This Mercedes Sprinter had a little kitchen w/ a stovetop, & a mini fridge. The kitchen comes with pots, pans, and dinnerware. Need to shower? There’s even a pop out shower provided! AMAZING. Everything you need to stay comfortable while on the road adventuring! Big mountain free rider, Jeremy Jones, once said, “The attraction of snowboarding is the freedom it gives you. With a snowboard on your feet the sky is the limit. You can do anything and go anywhere.” This quote describes exactly why I love snowboarding so much. Having my feet strapped to my board while sending it through some fresh powder is one of the best feeling. Me & my friends traveled to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. I can say the van fit up to three people at a time somewhat comfortably. At least comfortable enough for just hanging out inside a van. Also want to shout out to my homie @coremazmeals for taking care of me while I was on my trip by sending me his meals. Check him out for your meal prep needs!
