Hema Malini it became an average hit at the box office VW Porsche 914 manufactured and marketed collaboratively by Volkswagen and Porsche from 1969 to 1976. Im opening the #wartburgfiles for #obscuremonday with this absolute fail of a car; the Wartburg 1.3 in Indian Red. By 1988, the 353 was already on the market for 24 years, having been launched in 1966. Powered by a not very good 3 cylinder, 2 stroke motorbike engine which was basically outdated when the car came out. Anyway, this is about the rare 1.3. In October 1988, the 1.3 replaced the god awful 353. The differences outside were some ugly bumpers, a wider track and a front fascia which made the car look like it shat itself. Overall a promising start for a definitely good looking car. The engine was the biggest surprise; 1.3 liters of Western German fury from what probably was a Polo engine. It was so furious in fact that they needed to modify the whole front end due to how big it was. They also made a new gearbox which was mounted on the floor like on any normal car. The changes were so expensive that it cost double the price of the old 353 Tourist. They did however offer 7 colors, ranging from vomit to cardboard box. Oh well, at least the Rio green was acceptable. And of course, it didnt help that in one year the Berlin wall fell and imports flooded what used to be East Germany. In April 1991, after 152.757 cars, the 1.3 was put to rest and the Wartburg brand was put out of its misery. I bet theres no people who miss it. This thing at the moment is at the end of its life, luckily. All thats interesting about it are the old magazines on the parcel shelf. - @romanian_carspots on Instagram

Tavita Scanlan “The Hummingbird Bowl” 2013. Portrait for my thesis project, “A Gift Of Mud”. Thinking back on that project and the 9 subjects I chose all in which had incredible and unique shapes of concrete to skate on their properties. The one that always stands out to me was @theglassknife and his home in Otis, Oregon. Not exactly for the concrete although the Hummingbird Bowl does rule but because Tavita opened his doors to me and was always so fun and easy going to work with. He is a dude that truly would give you the shirt off his back and an example of what type of human this earth needs more of. Me and Dad at @griessmuehle - In the Cosmic Hole - before starting the last Oscillator night in 2017. I’m wearing his original Typhoon club t-shirt from 80s, and he was very proud! Anyway, he partied for 16hours and I left before him cause I was tired and I am probably a grandma more than he is 💥 I went back to the club in the morning with a coffee in my hand and he was still there.. in the garden putting wood in the fire with a bunch of Australian kids.. they were communicating with google translate, my dad speaks just Italian, and he was answering in my home-town local dialect - Hilarious! They were having so much fun BUT I felt very embarrassed and wanted him to leave the club. After 3 years, looking at this pic, I can finally see how special this night was and I’d never forget that! Seeing him walking around the club where I have mostly of my beautiful memories since when I moved to Berlin was emotional. There are so many things about our parents that make us feel uncomfortable but we should just accept them for what they are and this is what I learn after having my dad to every single gig I had in Berlin for the following months, standing next to the DJ booth for hours, protecting his daughter like if she was still ten years old and behaving like he was still a 20 years old party-boy 😁❤️ - @vale_budino on Instagram

Almost every band you can name from that time played there. Megadeth played their first ever show there. Slayer and Exodus met there for the first time when they shared one of many bills together. Death Angel and Possessed played some of their very first shows there. This photo is a good memory of what the bar was like on any given night. Just the local metal scene hanging out. CCAD circa 1970. #CCADalumni Gary McAllister is in the middle of his undergrad years studying Industrial Design at CCAD. He came from the Appalachian Mountains of western Maryland, to the big city of Columbus, Ohio. Gary took advantage of the wide variety of courses offered to him, such as advertising, painting, ceramics, and sculpture. Shortly after graduation, Gary landed his first job at an ad agency in Washington DC. A few years later he moved to Los Angeles to work at another ad agency. But working in advertising just wasnt for Gary. He began a decades long career in freelance illustration, working with magazine publishing houses, movie studios, and ad agencies. Gary even developed a product line that he designed, manufactured, and marketed himself. Martha Cooper is one of the most important journalists and photographers of graffiti and hip hop culture. Cooper began documenting graffiti art on the streets of New York in the 70’s while working at the ‘New York Post.’ She shadowed the late legendary graffiti artist DONDI and iconic rapper Afrika Bambaataa as well as captured snapshots of Keith Haring and Futura’s subway art in the’80s. At the time, many considered it wrong to glorify vandalism. However, Cooper would take her photography out to the world and help elevate appreciation for graffiti as a form of art. 18 and fresh out of school with some A-levels and pubes on my chin. Was lucky enough to visit Studio 80 in Amsterdam , July 15 before it shut down the following January. The club was hidden behind two big black doors in between a bunch of bars with no obvious signs of it being a club. Inside it was really Intimate, only one room was open that night with the DJ booth in one corner with a few vertical strip lights either side and the bar was in the opposite corner. A two levelled box in the middle of the room meant you could really get stuck in with everyone around you. It was only a resident night and the atmosphere was mega, everyone was super friendly and didn’t seem to even mind my naive use of a disposable camera inside 🤦♂️ later that week they celebrated 10 years of the club with Steve Rachmad, David Vunk, Young Marco, Marcel Vogel, San Proper and Helena Hauff to mention a few which would have been a cracking weekend. - @digital_position on Instagram

A note from his son Matthew: Thank you to all members of Thames who were part of his times with the club - you brought him friendship, competition, laughter and many, many good evenings of conversation, and occasionally song. If he had an epitaph it might well be: To run with the Hare and Hounds was his pride and his joy, to sport the old saltire and to race like a boy, for when the sun shone on his saltire his joy knew no bounds, so lets all drink good health to the Thames Hare and Hounds. 1. Varsity Match dinner menu with John speaking as Oxford Captain. 1966 Quite simply, John Bryant was one of the great Thames men, giving over 50 years of unstinting service to the club. He joined Thames in 1967 straight from Queen’s College, Oxford. While at Oxford, he competed 3x in the Tortoises-Spartans cross-country race, and once in the 3,000SC varsity at White City. At Thames, he was vice-captain from 1972-73 and then club captain for four seasons from 1973 until 1977, and served as our seventh President from 2010-15. On the competitive front, he was one of our foremost runners during the 1970s and early-1980s when we started to emerge as a competitive force in local and regional competition. In 1976 he was one of the scoring six (who coincidentally had all been involved in the 1966 Varsity Match) when we pulled off an unheralded second place in the Southern Cross-Country Championships at Parliament Hill. Professionally, John was a journalist and worked for The Daily Mail, The Times, The Sunday Correspondent and The European, concluding his career as Editor of The Daily Telegraph. Found this photo of my dad today by chance. That’s him on the right in the Armand Basi t-shirt. It’s the early 90’s I guess. He would have been the creative director on whatever McDonald’s ad this is. His writing partner @jeffgelberg is on the far left. They made a lot of ground breaking, industry changing ads together and never got the credit they deserve. My dad died of AIDS in ‘94 just a few years after this photo was taken. Jeff wrote a touching blog post about my dad’s MacTonight campaign and the general disregard for creatives that is at the heart of the advertising industry. I mean duh. Pandemic nostalgia and positive thoughts. The dude who looks like a cop in this photo is a member of a Mexican govt service called Angeles Verdes. They patrol the Baja peninsula with auto repair, first aid, towing etc. they are a free service and on this ride we were hoping to encounter an Angel because it’s like running into a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence, but for roadside assistance, anyway, the guy shaking the Angel’s hand, @llenrapkcin two things about him: first off this guy has consistently been there for me, had my back, listened to my worries, and made me laugh so hard I fell out of my chair. For instance, right before we took this photo, the Angel Verde was asking us to approach him and he used the Mexican version of the hand gesture for ‘come closer’ which is upside down from the US version. We were all so starstruck by the experience, flustered, Nick saw the dude gesturing that downward one-hand-clapping motion and he misunderstood it but wanted to be respectful so he started kneeling down on one knee like the guy was telling him to genuflect in his highway royalty presence, quite funny. The other thing is that Nick is currently working doubles managing a Trader Joe’s in the heart of New Orleans which is currently a covid hotspot. So this is just my way of asking everybody to please stay home, wear a mask and gloves if you’ve got them. Everybody who is out there working in public right now is loved and needed so let’s watch their backs and take care of each other.
